Alright, so I've always been a bit confused about this whole phone modding thing and I usually just follow the instructions on the given ROM I want. I forgot what ROM and process I did a few months ago but since then, it has been slowing down and freezing alot lately so I'm looking to update it once again. Is there something I should do to my phone before I go from my current custom rom to another custom rom? I was also wondering what is an overall good rom/kernal that you would recommend, I've heard good thing about Valhalla v1.3.2 but it seems that KJ1 just came out and is much better.
Phone specs:
Samsung Galaxy S 4g (Bought it the day it came out)
Model Number: SGH-T959V
Firmware Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: T959VUVKF2
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKF2-CL277147
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.VUVKF2
Not sure if it matters but all my phone info is above.

Alright for the past 4 hours I've been having major trouble with this, I've been very close to bricking it many times and I've decided to stop where Im at because this is the first time I've got anything to boot up in a while.
That is what Im using right now.

Follow these steps and you will be using Valhalla in no time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765
After you get Valhalla up and running you can get the KJ1 kenrel here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032
and the KJ1 modem here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293218
Both of which flash via CWM
To the OP, get rid of kf2 as soon as you can!!! that's the worst GB ROM ever. Battery drains really fast.
Any ROM would be good for you, you should however get valhalla 1.3.2 (wiping all your /data) and set it up to get ready for next valhalla update, which should be out soon, and flashing it won't mess up with your installed apps.
I think you should install kg4 first via Odin, just to be sure you get proper GB bootloaders and avoid bootloops later.
Good luck

GET RID OF KF2. KF2 has a potential to brick your phone. It has a different way of getting into Download mode and has no recovery. Press volume up and power only to get into download mode. Flash KG4 to get right bootloaders.
Flash KJ1.

So everyone is excited about KH1 I see, well.
I now have a fully functional deodexed KH1 breed. And now, why not make it look AOSP. As maker of GBTHEME, I am trying to integrate as much GB as possible into this rom. Also it will be there tonight or tomorrow.
Problems right now, Settings has an issue.

Hey have any of you guys noticed that on the keyboard after "A" and "S", it is "D""F""G""H", just like KD1, KF1, KF2, KG4, KG6, KH1!!!!

there's an explanation why they have these codes. i know for a fact that K = 2011 and the letters after that signifies the month. so H = August. I guess the number is the build number.

Yeah, that's correct. I remembered reading about that on the Vibrant forum. Mind-blowing stuff, lol. The number is the revision though.
KG6, for example, means out was built in July 2011, sixth revision.

I you are referring to me, why? I just wan't to know.
Is it possible for you to make an Odin version of this rom? It would really save a lot of steps in installing. Right now I can't get the gb bootloaders off the phone and trying to load ICBINB on top of a stock odin results in the phone hanging at bootup. The only way to get CWM on gb is by way of dr. honk's KG4 kernel odined on top of a gb install.
You must have the dr. honk kernel. Then you flash using recovery, then you can reflash the khi kernel.
I'm sorry, I looked inside an odin tar and it must be a bit more difficult to compile those four or five big installation files. A CWM file is easier to mix and match as I found out just now by following the suggestion and sticking the zimage from dr. honk's kernel in whitehawk's deodexed KH1. I thought for sure the phone would freeze but it didnt! That explains the preference for CWM. Maybe I can get a stable gb with CWM on there after all.

You can mix and match using Heimdall. I'm thinking of switching to that instead of using Odin... It's been more reliable in some testing I've done recently, plus it works on other OSes besides Windows.
If you want to flash back to Froyo bootloaders, try this release:

Raver added the bootloaders to it so you can install other Froyo ROMs afterward.

Well welcome to sgs4g, the wifi is a issue on all GB releases at the current.
A for cm7... Not available at the moment though there are developers working on it.
Word to the wise, and not so wise, do NOT flash anything not specifically make for this phone.
Most of the newer roms are based on gb... So once you settle on the custom rom of your liken and calibrate your battery you'll notice improved battery life, just keep in kind it will take a couple of days for the battery to settle in after you install the rom.
Hope this helps.

Browse around the Android Development thread. I would strongly suggest to start reading the guides like "converting ext4 on gingerbread" by dsexton or the "ext4 starter pack" because those will help you get started and they are VERY important. Follow those directions carefully and read up on the troubleshooting and you'll flash the ROMs with no hassle.
As for the ROMs, there are quite a few on 2.3.4. The latest ones are ICBINB variants (KG4, KH1, KH2, etc) by Team Acid, Audiophile by Raver, and the most recent one, Valhalla by Whitehawkx.
Ah im not big on the roms still a noob at that just trying too get the normal GB 2.3.4 and later work on doing custom roms.
ok i found GB 2.3.4 but now i cant go in too download mode
I had trouble with this at first. They changed the sequence. Unplug the cable. Hold down volume up and volume down, and while holding them down plug in the cable. That will trigger dowload mode.

Hey Brandon, this thread gives a great description on how to root your charge. => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14692818
If you still have questions feel free to ask, and I'll try to answer them as best as i can.
Ok, so i got it rooted and just installed a de-bloated stock Rom. Its ok, but now question is, if i decide to install a gingerbread Rom or any other Rom such as gummycharged, can i just install like i did on my bolt or x in cwm or do i have to use this odin program? if i have to use odin, how do i go about installing that way? thanks in advance...

For most roms, like gummycharged fe 2.0 and gbe 2.0 you just need CWM. I'm sure the process is the same as your bolt but just to be clear: Place the rom's zip you want on the sd card, boot into CWM, wipe date, dalvik cache, and cache partition, and then install the rom from the sd card. =) There are also some roms that come as full-odins, where you flash the package through odin and it does the work for you. That being said, you shouldn't run into that many unless you are un-rooting your phone. Hope that made sense. let me know if it doesn't.
Sweet. Thanks alot dude. That's awesome to know. I don't really wanna get into messing with odin. I like being able to do everything from my phone and not having to hook up to the laptop.

LOL, I was just coming in here to ask that exact same question as the OP. The wording was almost verbatim what I was going to say. The majority of experience I have had with Android is with HTC phones. I have rooted a few tablets as well. The instructions for the charge root are super confusing compared to previous devices.
My big issue is with the terminology. Like what is EE4, EPF1? Are there certain kernels that only work with certain roms? How easy is it to completely pooch the phone if I click on the wrong button in Odin? Can I make a nandroid backup and swap roms on the fly using Rom Manager depending on my moods or is it more complex then other android phones?
I haven't checked out the posts yet in this thread but seeing as how at least one other person has been just as confused as me I'm wondering if someone out there that has experience with both Samsung and lets say HTC phones can make a simple guide that makes comparisons to other rooting processes. For people that arn't used to Samsung phones, these instructions can be very overwhelming and there doesn't seem to be a newbie thread out there that gives information on all the abbreviations used and what they mean.

EE4, EP1W, ect are OS build numbers. EE4 is the current official release Froyo build. EP1W is the latest leaked Gingerbread build we have. Those are pretty much the only two version you want to worry about right now. There are Froyo kernels and Gingerbread kernels. Any Froyo kernel will work with any Froyo ROM, and any GB kernel will work with any GB ROM.
Only mess with the PDA button in Odin and you'll be fine. Forget the Phone button even exists, because that's the button that can get you into trouble. You can use the PIT button as well if you have the charge.pit file, but it's not normally necessary, so only do that if you have a reason.
ROM Manager is useless with this phone. There are reports that there is a version of CWM from it that will work with the Charge, but it doesn't work nearly as well as the latest imnuts CWM. The orange CWM dated 8/17 will let you do nandroid backups...you just need to boot directly into it and do them from CWM itself and forget about ROM Manager.

kernels for all roms on the Charge are installed in CWM, as for GB kernels you can't go wrong with any of Imoseyons voodoo ones... radios don't necessarily need to be updated but I've noticed a big improvement with the latest EP1W modems, however the results vary on different phones I've seen

I've installed every single stock leak there is (I hate ugly modded roms). KK3 is NOT the way to go. KK4 was just released and currently it's not rooted and runs beautifully. Wifi, bluetooth, GPS, data and phone are all working great. 9 times out of 10 the rooted versions suck anyways because they use a buggy kernal that wasn't meant for it. There's usually some kind of trade off with rooted roms so if you don't care about rooting, grab KK4 and flash with ODIN.

I've been playing with it all day and I have yet to find any issues. All apps work, no shutdowns, no lagging, no dropped wifi, no data switching, no bluetooth problems...nothing. Definately one step closer to "official".
the custom kernel is usually packaged so people have cwm and dont get in a panic not being able to flash out of the rom the same way they flashed it. if i knew how to repack the initramfs id give a shot at making a more stock kernel with cwm. but unfortunately like the rom chefs here i dont have that knowledge. you can absolutely have kk4 rooted without a rogers based kernel, it just means flashing twice. maybe ill fill that gap since flashing the stock kernel back to the phone is too much for many people to figure out. the phone retains root if you flash the stock kernel. what is going on is there is a script in the custom kernel that copies the su file and simlinks it while the phone boots in an insecure state. once root is there it stays unless you flash the rom. after the phone is rooted the kernel has zero effect on root privledges.
New to the infuse forums (so hoping I don't get beat up too much) basically Im trying to Downgrade my brothers infuse from the att ota gb update uclb3 back to froyo or upgrade to a custom gb rom, he is super pissed at me because his phone is super laggy and im the one that updated his phone. Tried to read through stuff but got a lil confused as the title states (I think I got spoiled from the i777 forums) any how if someone can point me to a good guide to follow from rooting to installing a rom or just reverting to stock froyo and a nice stable rom suggestion that would be nice. odin method preferred as i have no experience with heimdall. again appreciate the help and sorry if this is a redundant post (puts on flame retardant suit :angel

If you can use heimdall, the simplest way is to put the phone into download mode and flash my uclb3 stock package or adam outler's stock package.
The second post in each op contains the insecure kernel. These kernels are also flashed in download mode. Once these custom kernels are flashed, you can boot into CWM and then flash the custom firmware you want.
If you are familiar with Odin, check out some of jscott30's thread. He has several Odin premade rooted firmware package that are also very nice.
