[Q] Hulu and 1080p - Samsung Infuse 4G

I'm considering dropping my iPhone and moving over to the Infuse. That large screen is calling to me.
I have a Nook Color that I have rooted and installed Gingerbread on (thanks to this site) and I really like it. My first question is about Flash and Hulu.com. On my Nook I was able to install a cracked version of Flash that allows me to go directly to Hulu.com and play the videos there in browser. Is that possible on the Infuse?
And my other question was is this phone capable of 1080p playback. My old 3Gs just can't handle it and the Nook will chug along but playback is very slow. I have several videos that are 1080p that I would like to play without having to convert them all first. I saw another thread that the device could play them but not after it had been rooted. Which I guess I'll have to do if I want to play Hulu files.
Thank you.

Yes it has some ability to play 1080p. Actually more than some Tegra2 dual core devices.
So despite the year old processor it is still able to compete. And Samsung has been putting in multiple codec support and support for mkv sinse the original galaxy s 2 years ago. Multimedia is their area of specialty on phones. Not every 1080 p file will play but you may be able to transcode them to a lower class or bitrate or change the audio encoding which I find is most often the problem on files that don't play.
Also the browser while not the smoothest has a user agent setting accessable in the address bar by typing " about:useragent" just replace the lib for the flashplayer with one that is hex edited to look like the windows flash player and set useragent to desktop ( you can even make your own if you have issues) and clear your cookies and enjoy.

Oh. I thought Hulu had plugged that loop hole/browser trick. At least it didn't work on my Nook.

I thought so too but there are still people with hulu threads. I think when new versions of flash come out they need to work to identify the illegal users again. Also you need to make surecookies are cleared. And it may have something to do with the device as well. They may have a block list but some new devices may sneak through provided the flash player look right but I'm not sure what their servers can actually see.

Guess that puts me in a wait and see category. I was kinda hoping I could just install something like the CM7 mod and then a cracked version of flash like I did on my Nook. That works perfectly.
Thank you for the advice.

You should know that 1080p video playback only works on official AT&T or Froyo-based Infuse ROM's. The current Gingerbread ROM's don't have 1080p support (although the leaked KI3/4 supposedly do, they're not custom ROM's and may have other issues). Also, non-Samsung ROM's like CM7 won't have any of Samsung's hardware-accelerated media codecs (ie. MKV). Even so, playback is going to be affected by bitrate: if the bitrate of a file is too high, you'll either have problems seeking or it won't play at all. If the audio track is an unsupported format (ie. FLAC in an MKV container), you can use MX Video Player and set it to use S/W audio decoding.
As for Hulu, you should be able to get by with hex editing the version in your Flash libraries to the latest Windows/Chrome Flash version, and then setting your useragent in your phone's browser. I haven't tried this recently, but it was still working on my Captivate a month ago.

Well that's cool. If I can get Hulu to work without rooting then I'll be happy. I'll probably leave it stock then so I get the most out of video playback. Thank you very much for te help.

You'll need to root if you want to modify the Flash libraries within the system Flash apk. Otherwise, you'll have to reapply the modified Flash library every time you reboot the phone.

Try "yxflash" from the market. It claims to be able to play WMV, DivX & Xvid... Haven't tried it myself though.
It's a $19.99 app that has to be purchased outside the market though... I don't like the way they're trying to conduct business.
Try meridian from the market. Haven't tested xvid yet but seems to play things otherwise built in on my mytouch couldn't haven't gotten that far.

Yea. They're kinda shady since they call it free then charge you to use it.
I'm guessing, if it does actually work, he doesn't want some rooted dirtbag downloading and refunding to add to the plethora of pirated apps. I haven't seen the app yet, but I figure if allows google checkout, it should be as safe as any other purchase via google checkout.
isn't there a samsung android phone with divx support builtin? I'm pretty sure I read that some where. Wonder if someone is working on some sort of port...
there are two android phones which play divx/xvid out of the box. one from samsung and the other from lg. getting the drivers/media player ported from either of these phones would be a big plus from me. i know i could convert media before hand, however i use my memory card as a "memory stick" which i bring in to work to watch on the PC during lunch. being able to play the same files on the phone when i'm on the bus/train would be so much easier.
try doubletwist if you're on Windows/Mac... no linux version yet
it will convert them to play on android by just dragging them over to the device...
I can confirm that yxflash works on my G1. I just download a divx movie (about 700 mb) and play it. Unfortunately the frame rate is about 15 f/s. Hope on Nexus One it will be much better.

btw, they still have xmas, you can get 50% off while using coupon code "xmas".
Still too expensive for my opinion, but hey, they come from the apple universum where all have too much money.
Now this post isnt going to be of much use because i couldnt find all the links i was after..... however
There were people requesting the samsung xvid/divx player be ported out back on the G1. Seems that one of XDA's members lbcoder has some decent incite on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566591&highlight=divx
He posted
divx is just an implementation of iso mpeg4.
So...
to make it play you need to;
1) ensure that bitrate and resolution are low enough to be properly handled,
2) package it in a compatible container (mp4 works)
3) ensure that the AUDIO is encoded in a compatible manner (vorbis is great, but others also work, mp3, aac, etc.)
4) ensure that there is no crap in the file showing that it is divx because it simply doesn't know what divx *IS* -- make it read as mpeg4 -- this does NOT require reencoding the file, just using a SANE header.

I thought $10 wasn't bad. It plays awesome on the N1. It takes me 10 minuted to download a Divx movie, but 30 mins to convert. Over the course of several months, I would save a ton of time converting movies. I can download directly to the SD card via browser and play with yxflash.
Yes, having to purchase outside the market is shady, but I have contacted them several times with issues and they resolved them within one day.
Found the app via market at first glance i thought nah **** it because of the bad rating.. at second glance i actually took the time to read the comments, turns out most of the comments where bad/laggy playback, witch was partly due to Magic / Heros hardware, and the resizing requirements..
ive installed the trial, and it plays beautifully.. although sometimes i do get some lines across the screen, but they are hard to notice...
Price is still a bit high thou! :/ im gonna give it a month or two to see if a cheaper alternative shows up, and hopefully by that time Google will have opened up the market in Denmark.
used yxflash to play an hd copy of ice age 3 in xvid, ran nearly perfect, every so often there is some frame skip

Video Not Optimized For Mobile Device

Hi all.
I purchased this device mostly to be used as a companion for when I stream to Justin.TV. This website uses both flash video and java at the same time. I want to monitor my video stream and the chat while I play. I know I could of got a netbook for this, but I would like the tablet for doing other things.
Some streams with lower quality work good for me, but my stream does not play. The stream will freeze, but I am able to hear the audio. My stream is in flash and is 720p, 3000kbps, H.264.
I tried some other 720p flash video and received the message "Video Not Optimized For Mobile Device". (Uh, yeah, that's why I bought a tablet and not a phone). Obviously this is because of the Android OS and not the hardware?
So I am half-happy because I can see the chat, but not the video. Is there anything I can do to help this? I am running TnT 2.2.0 with the flash player linked to in the thread.
If this can't be fixed for now, does anyone think it will be resolved in the future? Perhaps a better Flash apk that supports the Tegra better? Or would I be better with the new Viewsonic Viewpad?
Thanks
A lot of this is bleeding edge. We are using a phone OS that has been modded for tablets and not supported by Google (yet). And, the Tegra itself is relatively new and has had issues because of it.
In six months, I expect that a lot of these issues with be old news. But for now, it's a problem.
Which browser are using? Have you tried Dolphin HD and changed the User Agent to desktop?
For my stream I get the same results with the default browser and Dolphin HD, but for some reason with Dolphin HD I am forced to the mobile site every time. Even with user agent set to Desktop. So I can't try the HD flash video with Dolphin.
There is no mobile version of my stream.
Based on roebeet's post, I guess i'll stick it out and hope it gets better. I am already somewhat happy because I can run Ventrilo and see the chat at the same time. That's already more than my iPad can do.
Now if I can just get the USB keyboard working.
Thanks for the replies.

[Q] Question before buying Gtab

Hi,
I am new to Android and I would like to get some help for a few questions before buying a Gtablet.
1) Flash support - I saw it's posted on the official website it has a temp version of flash player. Can I know if it works well? I need to watch high-def flash movies on different websites. I hope it can play smoothly. Also am I able to play facebook flash games?
2) RMVB/AVI/MKV support - I have tons of these kind of videos on my NAS server but the official site does not say they are supported. I heard there is a Rockplayer that can do it, but I went to their App Store and found no such software. Can i know a way to play these formats? If the hardware does not support them, and there is a software does, how is the quality and speed?
3) Local LAN share - I think I already googled there is one called EStrong, can I open my NAS file share folders, and play Video directly?
4) Customization - Can I install apps from anywhere instead of their app store? for example can i install Android Market? or install an app from a file?
That's pretty much what i concerns so far, other than that this is a great tablet!
I much appreciate your advices.
I can help with the first and fourth ones. This afternoon I watched an episode of outsourced on nbc.com. it wasnt perfect, but definatly viewable, and youtube videos all look fine for me. As for the last one, I have the android market installed, and I have also installed .apks that I have the file form so yea they do work.
re. 2, my son user rockplayer to watch some mkvs last weekend. I'm not that familiar w/anime, but he said it wasn't handling embedded softsubs. We did find another player on market that did but I don't remember the name.
re. 3, ES Explorer will copy files over lan (windows shares or ftp), but it's not for streaming.
Mkv support depends more on how it was encoded. I ripped some DVDs to mkv with 5.1 sound using handbrake and those will play in rockplayer using software decode fine.

I should clarify my earlier post. We were able to watch the MKVs (animes) he had downloaded fine with rockplayer. But they had softsubs, and it wasn't showing those.

Re. 1, my wife uses the Gtab to watch Kdramas, on sites that stream flash, and it works pretty well. Served from sites like tudou, qdisk, etc., and works ok, but a lot of those sites sometimes have heavy traffic, and even with a PC, they get jerky, so it's not the Gtab, but the stream server and traffic usually.

Works on news sites, tv.com, hulu, but thats with vegan 5.1. The stock rom ran flash "ok" but would crash some times.

According to the specs It will play:
32-bit LP-DDR2, DDR2
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode
1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode
Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
Not all of those are working currently (some are and some aren't). Get yourself a good video encoder/dvd ripper for your computer and once they are encoded, you just drag and drop onto the gtab. If they are encoded properly with the proper settings, you get descent video quality.

Yes but you will need to do a couple updates using the developer instructions from here and then do a market fix. The easiest one is the simple performance pack update to the 3389 build with a market fix, however over 5,000 people have gone to vegan 5.1
http://vegantab.gojimi.com/
It is the best from what i can tell, wicked fast. It has two issues curently 1) Micro SD card management/file mgt 2) Keyboard auto correct. Updates seem to come out every 10 days to 2 weeks right now.
Thank you all!
Thanks a lot for your answers it helped me a lot!

I think if it was possible to repackage it someone would have already done it. I have no exerience with hex editing and I was able to do it. Just use this hex editor http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm
Use root explorer to pull out the file libflashplayer.so and open it up with the hex editor and use the find to search for text string AND and change it to WIN. Then copy it back over to the original file location. If you need more help send me a pm.

This works just fine on my G-Tablet, running VEGAn-Tab Build, BETA 5.1.1. Thanks for posting.
In addition to ksc6000s post... find the "and" which comes before the flash version number. Then replace and with win and the android version number with the windows version number, this way you don't get an update to the latest flash dialogue. Some people put nines for numbers and have reported success. Or download the pre edited version floating around this post. Then make sure your browser settings are allowing plug ins and set to desktop. hope that gives some more detail also if you see loading for a while be patient it takes a bit to load in my experiences.
Works fine in portrait mode. A little jerky with lag in full screen landscape mode with 480 resolution. Dolpin set to Desktop mode. REMEMER TO UNINSTALL Flash 10.1 before installing 10.2 with Hulu fix.
Stock 3318 pack with 3.14 enhancement pack.
Installed. Seems slower than 10.1. But on the bright side, hulu hack works. It never did on 10.1

I agree about the slowness, but Hulu with 10.1 didn't work on Vegan 7. This one does. Now if we could only get general video support on Vegan 7...
Ill have to try this I've tried a few times to get hulu and no fix ever seemed to work.
Hulu works for me. Even tethered to my phone. May pause when tethered but only initially. No problems on home wifi. Fullscreen isn't quite fullscreen but if you choose the pop-out it fills the screen almost prefect. The on screen controls for the player are a bit difficult to use, but I can use them. The Hulu app works really well in portrait mode as a way to watch shows quickly. The about:debug part of the hack is critical.
i get no sound out of my flash videos, im on vegan 7. ive tried hulu and youtube, videos play fine but no sound
This worked on samsung galaxy tab Verizon with Klean v3. The trick is to enable flash plugin all the time in dolphin. I had mine set to on demand and when i changed it hulu worked. I also recommend choosing the pop out player when watching a movie. After you give it some time to load it runs really smooth

Does anyone else have problems with choppy video in Dolphin using Hulu? Is there a trick to get it to play smoother? Other videos play fine outside of the browser. I am running TnT Lite 4.4.0
No Sound...
I am also experiencing no sound irrespective of the source through the speakers. I can get sound through the headphones via music player though.
Update: I now have sound through the speakers but nothing from hulu....

Infuse Video Playback Performance

After messing around with my Infuse on stock, custom Froyo and Gingerbread ROM's, I've noticed a pretty major difference between it and I9000-based phones like the Captivate: video performance.
On my Captivate, hardware-accelerated video playback up to 720p was rock solid. If it played at all, it always played smoothly, and this was regardless of running programs or RAM usage. With the Infuse, Froyo ROM's support hardware-accelerated video playback up to 1080p, but there seem to be some disadvantages.
The most major thing I noticed is that RAM usage affects video playback. If I use my phone for a while and allow the RAM to populate with background apps, I immediately run into issues trying to play video: high-bitrate 1080p video will no longer play. Instead, I just get a black screen and no sound. Additionally, several 720p videos I tested will lag heavily. Occasionally (using an app that supports both hardware and software playback like MX Video Player), playing a video will error out and force the app to switch to software decoding.
Clearing the RAM using the built-in task manager and restarting the video player immediately resolves these issues for the most part. There still are some effects that always persist though: certain 720p videos (which play perfectly on my Captivate) will still show some hints of lag using either hardware or software decoding. Additionally, I can't seek or resume playback of high-bitrate 1080p MKV's: the screen goes black and the sound stops playing. I can only play these files from the beginning for them to have video and sound.
Except for the issues specifically relating to 1080p (which don't apply to Gingerbread ROM's), all of these issues are observed and reproducible on any ROM, including stock Froyo, custom Froyo (Infused 1.6), Hellraiser + any I9000 JVQ ROM and Infused v2.2.3. This is severely disappointing, because I upgraded to the Infuse expecting a media experience equal to or improved over the Captivate with the SAMOLED+ screen. I also didn't want a Galaxy S2 because the Yamaha audio chip it uses is a dealbreaker for me.
While that was mostly a list of observations and a not-so-subtle rant, would anyone be able to offer an explanation for this? Or perhaps my case is somehow isolated? Can anyone else confirm this?
Edit: Here's a YouTube video showing the RAM usage playback issues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPiCPSWUTCY
Never had any trouble with video playback. I have a couple of movies on mine. Running Infused 2.2.3

I'm not sure what to think of that, considering Infused 2.2.3 doesn't even support 1080p playback. But even leaving that out, would you be willing to test sample videos? I mean I can't really explain this better without posting a video of a side-by-side comparison of my Captivate and Infuse playing the same set of videos to show that the Infuse lags on certain videos while the Captivate is smooth.
*bump*
I did some additional testing. Running Infused 1.6 Froyo, I loaded up every app on my phone and then minimized them with the home key. The phone was still running smoothly and there was no signs of lag, but the RAM was as full as I could make it. I then opened the stock video app and attempted to play my library of videos.
The result? Only 2 videos played. One was a 720p H.264 MKV encoded from a Bluray, and the other was the 1080p trailer that came preloaded on the phone. Both videos lagged heavily. The rest of the videos (lower quality 720p or higher bitrate 1080p H.264 MKV's) did not play at all: just a black screen and a seek bar that didn't move. I then performed a level 2 clear using the task manager. Result: all the videos played fine without lag.
Conclusion: video playback on the Infuse is definitely tied to RAM usage, which is NOT the case on the I9000/Captivate.

Edit: PM sent.
sorry to inform you but I had no issues with that video. I wonder if you may have something stuck in data somewhere (some apps keep data on the sd card) or If you may have bad blocks on your sdcard. I haven't rebooted my phone today and loaded up ram by playing flash videos in the phone browser getting ram all the way up to 340 mb used. 140 was the browser alone and I started that video just fine. ill keep testing but if I were you id back up the sd cards and wipe the phone through settings (does an internal sd format as well unlike the recovery wipe) after a flash with the unbrick and start over. if it persists id get a new phone and for the sake of being thorough I will test it more but so ar I couldn't reproduce the issues.

smooth as butter. sometimes weird hard to explain stuff happens. I can't explain it.
I can see how a kernel issue in gb could cause it with rogers lame firmware but I don't see the issue with infused 1.6 so it doesn't seem to be an infuse specific issue at all.
Ok, I just finished completely resetting, reflashing and reformatting my phone. On first boot, I threw that exact file I sent you back onto the memory and tried to play it. Still got a black screen with no sound or video. Opened the task manager, performed a level 2 clear and tried again. Video plays but still lags and hitches every few seconds. sorry looks that way. but you should have only moved the videos back for testing. i know it shouldnt matter but computers are weird. maybe it's a deficientcy in your cpu? could only apply to the gpu inside it. you just never know. if you can reproduce the error with the trailers that come on the phone and compare it to a store model maybe they'll swap it out for you. if not call customer service and raise hell or send it to samsung.

What do you mean only move the videos back for testing? I didn't put anything on the phone except for that video file. The CPU doesn't seem to be the issue, because I tested against my Captivate using CPU Spy: both phones run at 400MHz during video playback, which is good enough for lag-free video on the Captivate (and should be the same case for the Infuse).
I can't get much to happen with the trailers that came with the phone, because only one is HD and it's a small file with black bars and a lower bitrate than most encodes. If I leave the phone running for over a day with the memory full, I can get the 1080p trailer to lag, but that's not very helpful for getting an exchange (especially since I got my phone at Costco and there are no active models in the store).
But that's not the issue anyway. The problem is that I've been enjoying 720p video on my Captivate for over a year. Now I've upgraded to the Infuse, which is supposed to have even better video performance and its having issues with all of my 720p and 1080p videos.
I'm almost positive this isn't a hardware issue though. Are you sure the entire opening sequence of that video is smooth on your phone? It doesn't seem like you've ever seen the video before watching it on your phone. If you haven't, please watch the video side-by-side on your computer and phone and look for any differences.

i meant not to restore all the files from the sd card backup when you test. just the files you want to test.
it is extremely smooth i cant seem to do anything to make it not smooth. i even bogged my phone down sequencially opening every app on the thing and returning home with the home button till it started lagging badly but when i open the video player it is butter smooth. really i cant explain your issues, im just speculating possibilities.
but ill try it on my computer as well.

I only restored one file. The video. Nothing else.
Edit: Can you tell me the build number of your Infuse (the 4-digit number under the battery, between S/N and SKU)? Mine is 1104.
oh wait there it is. the video player just stopped working.
not sure what changed but i put it on the dock and tried starting it again and no dice. i dont think this is ram related.
the issue for me is intermittent at best though. after a reboot it didnt play at first but 2 minutes later it was fine.
mine is also an 1104. april 2011 that's weird i wonder if you got a refurb. i think i picked mine up launch week.

Hmm, I wonder if that's unrelated to the issue considering how easily it happens on my phone and how much trouble you had to go through. If the video still doesn't lag on your phone at all (when you compare it to a computer), then I'll assume you're not getting the same issue. Also, are you using the kernel that came with Infused 1.6, or did you flash another one?
infused as is right now. nothing oddball here. atleast not right now. i have used some init.d scripts on it for loopy smoothness and memory managment mods but this time it is only the rom as gtg released it with the included kernel.
ok found the issue sorta. i cant tell what causes it but if you launch the video from my files or other file manager it works fine. if you open it from video player it doesn't. the video didnt show in my video player at first so i opened it from my files. after that it was in the video list in the video player and didnt work. there is something odd going on here because video player doesnt show in recent apps if you open it from the file manager. also after opening the video player it doesnt work from my files till you kill the video player. it is just weirdness. there is some messed up programming going on here. but try killing the player and opening the file with file manager. and yes i made sure it is using the samsung video player when it asked!
sorry i asked you to wipe your phone for that but if you dont do that and use the unbrick you can see all sorts of issues and no one is sure why.
Maybe that's why mine play fine. I've never loaded a vid into the player. Just opened them bygoing to the gallery.

That's an unexpected development. I've always been opening my videos from the video player, never from a file manager. How about other video players? Did you try MX Video Player? I need to use that player for my videos to see the subtitles (the video I sent you has subtitles that will display in MX Video Player and mVideoPlayer, but the former is better at displaying them).
Edit: Actually, I just tried playing the video from both the stock file manager and the Gallery app, and I still have the exact same issues as the video app :/
