Of course you don't know that.
And what has kept me rofling with the xda community is their lack of hope. Before the Nexus S was announced, many people speculated it being real. A lot of folks kept saying "No, CEO of Google said no Nexus Two." Which is true, it's not a Nexus Two. It's a Nexus S. They just kept quoting Eric Schmidt and saying "see he said there will be no new device" etc. And it eventually happened.
So I wouldn't be in complete doubt about this. I'm not in high hopes either. But it wouldn't surprise me if Samsung was working on 2.3 this entire time.
And everyone says "it's at&T that is holding it back." Where was it ever even confirmed that at&T received the software from samsung and was "adding" in their bloat? I don't recall EVER seeing that.
It wouldn't make sense to me from a business point of view for Samsung to skip Froyo and push out Gingerbread while releasing a new product for a new client "Nexus", unless they are trying to boost image and make up for the GPS fiasco by doing the unexpected? Do you think Google would have anything to say for when Gingerbread gets released by Samsung?
But aren't there reports of the Epic getting Froyo?
seriously?
expecting samsung to develop gingerbread for the phones already released is kinda like playing russian roulette with a glock and expecting to win...

That depends on which theatre you're in. If you're in the eastern zones and you want a large, you can't get a Dr. Pepper. We will be selling a super-large Dr. Pepper shortly though. And unlike our previous offerings, it will have all the stuff you wanted in the "large" such as ice...and Dr. Pepper.

At least this one is marked as a [Rumor] rather than a "Wouldn't it be great...."
It wouldn't make any sense for the Galaxy S phones jumping from 2.1 to 2.3.
It's obvious that Samsung has already invested time and money on 2.2. For Samsung to now scratch the 2.2 release and go straight to 2.3 would mean they toss all of that work in the bucket. Only a company with a terrible business practices would do something like that... wait, we may be jumping straight to 2.3 after all.

While the odds are slim, i would not completely discount it. There's the possibility that since they have already been working on the new Nexus S they have come further along with 2.3 than 2.2. if i was Samsung, i'd have put more developers and money to toward 2.3 and the NS. If they are similar enough, they could port it and you now.. gain some customer satisfaction and possible repeat business.
Nexus S is pretty much a Galaxy S, so a port might be quite easy.
Also 2.3 seems to be tailored towards power saving for AMOLED screens, with more dark elements, so again it might be easy.
Apple releasing OS updates for iOS for about 2 years has not seemed to hurt their sales much. Yes they are a different situation somewhat, but if Samsung wants to create a brand following with this S brand, they better show some customer loyalty before I show them any loyalty. Thats how Apple earned their following; they deliver at a high level to their customers.
Ugh, how is it that people think just because Gingerbread came out, that all phone companies should be able to release it immediately? I mean, geez, it took months for anyone to put out Froyo. Maybe I'm wrong.....
To my understanding (correct me), Samsung makes phone while Eclair is in the wild. Samsung (obviously) codes phone to work with Eclair. Google releases Froyo. Samsung says "I want that" and has a 2nd team begin coding Froyo. Samsung can't just drop the months of work to produce Eclair and start all over, it would delay the phone. Samsung releases phone. Samsung releases update. Google releases Gingerbread. Samsung COULD start coding Gingerbread. But not until they get their hands on it.
I hate hearing people say "why can't we just skip to 2.3", or whatever. Things take time. I always thought that companies had to wait for Google to release the OS before they could start working on it (or do they get it earlier??). With that being said, how could Gingerbread be right around the corner? Froyo was released in May, Samsung released their update in what....September or Oct (I don't remember and don't wanna look it up).....it took at least 4 months of development. So, if Samsung were to release a Gingerbread update for Galaxy S, it won't happen until what.... April? Then of course it'll take another 2-3 months to reach the Captivate. So now it's July 2011.....and I'll be buying another phone by then. I remember hearing people during the Froyo launch complain that Samsung should just "wait for Gingerbread, it's right around the corner." Yeah, if you consider 6+ months "around the corner."
I mean, I hope I am missing something......I would love to see Samsung keep support fairly current for this phone. But there reaches a time when its no longer feasible.
Sorry if you actually read that.......just annoyed....
::end worthless rant::
This is what I think would happen, if anything...i see sammy doing the same thing that moto did with the cliq and backflip, integrating parts of 2.3 into 2.2... moto included jit in 2.1 for those users (used to be me) and it kind of quieted the noise
However, it would start some major fires in europe, so it probably won't happen.
And we probably won't get an official gingerbread either.

Will the Nexus S get developer support?
I currently have a Vibrant but plan on getting the S. I notice there are SO MANY different roms for the N1. IE: MIUI ports, etc. What is everyone's stance on this? Will any of the N1 devs move to N-S?
Please, no anti-Samsung haters. I'm asking a serious question.

I currently have a nexus one. And my next phone will be largely based on its development community. To me this is what makes the nexus truly what it is.
The Community.
That's why I would like to know. I love the dev's for the Vibrant too but the sheer number of amazing dev's in the N1 section is astounding. I'd love to think they will work on the N-S as well.
I most likely will NOT go for the Samsung Nexus 2, solely because it's NOT a Google Developer Phone.
I was pretty upset when the Nexus title went to a Samsung device. I've got nothing against Samsung, but I think that Google should have stuck with HTC as their Android Dev Phone manufacturer.
The Nexus "X" line of Android phones should stay with ONE manufacturer.
Motorola should have the entire Droid line of phones, just as HTC has the entire line of MyTouch phones.
Just my dos-centavos
Wasn't the plan for the NS to be the next developer phone? Just because it's not HTC doesn't mean it's not going to be good. Google most likely has their thumb on this phone to make sure everything goes as THEY want it to. I don't see Samsung messing this up with Google taking care of the updates. All the software is being updated through google.

Oh, trust me. I like HTC too! I also had the Shadow and the G1, my brother has the Hero. The Shadow, 2007 seems like such a long time ago when I look at my Vibrant. Haha.
If the NS is going to be given all the new software updates before the N1, I think there's a really good chance that N1 ROM devs will move to the NS.
Even if it doesn't, though, the NS will definitely get a wide range of XDA support solely because it's a Google phone.
Personally, I was going to hold off on getting the NS to find a better successor to my N1, but then I heard rumors that Samsung scrapped the original model to make it a dual-core...so maybe.
Ofcourse it will, because its the latest Google phone. And nexus1 will lost a lot of support, because most people will move to Google's latest phone - Nexus S.
Until it's announced and officially declared as ADP4, it can only be compared to G2 - which will give you a good estimate.
The Nexus S will be the next developer phone, and will most likely get all Android updates first. I'm ready to jump ship. The Nexus 1 was great, but it also has it's problems.
I watched not too long ago a youTube video.
The Google Developer did not say he had a Nexus S but it matched the pictures seen in rumors.
Questioned he said there would be no Nexus 2 but this is the Nexus S
I think the Nexus S is real, it will be seen and announced soon.
When it is released Google will be using the device for future Android development, the Nexus One will be pushed aside.

We know its the next "google" phone. People seem to be unsure whether it will be officially a "developer" phone.
Since the rumors have been pointing towards a retail launch (not just the google.com/phone) I think people are just assuming its going to be more of a "consumer" phone rather then a "developer" phone like the Nexus One was.

It's speculation. But if the rumors of dual-core Cortex A9 are true then it seems likely. Also, the greatness that is Google, we can hope that they insist this next phone is dual-core and have optimized Gingerbread for such. Why on Earth would you not switch phones!
This forum will be demanding quad-core by the end of 2011 or sooner. It's natural. So thank you Nexus 1 and G1 for the progress you have brought us. RIP

It is being developed together with LG?
Oh well ... I was thinking Xoom is the Google Tablet ... might be not.
http://www.gizmocrunch.com/android/6127-google-nexus-tablet-nexus-one-s
If you thought the Motorola Xoom was supposedly Google's own device like the HTC Nexus One and Samsung Nexus S, you may be gladly mistaken.
Google Nexus Tablet to join Nexus One & S
Reports are now coming in suggesting that Google is working with LG to release a Google Nexus tablet with a newer version of Android Honeycomb (Android 3.1?).
With questionable sales and a somewhat "rough around the edge" OS, the Motorola Xoom while being the first Honeycomb tablet, may not be the flagship Android tablet after all.
The details come courtesy of Eldar Murtazin, dubbed the "James Bond of Smartphones" by Engadget. Murtazin states that the so-called Google Nexus tablet scheduled for release sometime in mid-summer or early fall.
Just like the Google Nexus One and Nexus S, this tablet will no doubt be packing new features that will remain exclusive to the tablet for sometime before rolling out to other manufacturers.

Makes sense... just like the phone side had the HTC Dream / G1 before the nexus one, the tablet side has the xoom to take the hit for all of honeycomb's bugs before releasing their own-branded hardware. It's the price moto pays for being first.
Everyone said, that the problem of Xoom is Honeycomb (3.0). If google brings a tablet with 3.1... i think the update from 3.0 to 3.1 of the xoom will be the same. The hardware of Xoom are not bad.
That's true ... the Xoom hardware is more than enough.
The only problem is the Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Once Google gave proper updates to make it more stable, less force close, it will all set.

Wow this is such BS. Andy Rubin has already said in interviews that the Xoom is Google's reference device like the Nexus devices. Wouldn't make any sense having another one. Either way I'm not worried about getting software updates. They're giving the a Xoom to developers to make apps for Honeycomb too.

I'll go this weekend to Miami, and i've planed to buy motorola xoom... but now...
First, the motorola xoom are heavier than samsung galaxy tab 10.1 and ipad2. but samsung have a lot of issues... My samsung galaxy S have the GPS broken... the touch wiz interface.. "i hate it" and RFS file system..
what can i do? buy motorola xoom? and die without upgrades? like milestone? buy ipad2 and die with itunes and IOS? glbenchmark said that his gpu is 10 times faster than tecra2...
i'm really confused with this.

Never believe Murtazin, he has no idea what he's talking about, all rumors he started was comlete BS, he's also likes to lick Steve's balls very much. I'm dead serious, Eldar Murtazin is just very bad, unprofessional "journalist".
I think we need to view the XOOM as the original DROID.
"stock" android 2.0 on DROID, followed rather quickly by the Nexus One.
Looks quite similar to me. With Honeycomb not being open sourced for the time being, I know I will be waiting now...
Yeah this kind of annoys me, having just bought the Xoom yesterday. I am glad it's stock honeycomb, I can't see the Xoom not getting future updates, and the hardware is darn good. Even after the tablets expo'd at CTIA I decided on the Xoom. We shall see I guess.
Google did put their name on the Xoom... They don't just put that on anything.
At any rate, no matter what you buy or when you get it, there's something newer, better, shinier, and faster right around the corner.

I am curious if Google is trying to take a larger hand in the hardware side of things, possibly encouraging news if they start to push updates them selves for many devices instead of 2.
Then again, they did hand out EVOs at IO...and it is far from Googles primary device.

Google may restrict what type of devices run Honeycomb so that a good user experience is maintained. I am sure there is something they can do if they really want to.
Actually, the licensing part comes wit hthe "Google" apps such as the market, they can deny access to that if they feel hardware and manufacturers don't meet their requirements.
That is how the platform works.
There is a vast difference between "may" and "will." Bill Gates may be the next Google CEO...or Charlie Sheen. The Earth may explode tomorrow from, you know, bad stuff in its core, and we won't have to worry much about anything else.
On licensing GApps -- It's not part of Android. While some may think this is a requirement to have for an Android device, it isn't. Lower-tier vendors have gotten around the issue with "unofficial" hacks. The one draw of GApps is market access, and with Amazon's store emerging as a credible alternative, what little leverage Goog has before is now even less.
The tablet exist and has Chrome OS.
It sounds like some of the details are still in a rumor status but incremental update of OS is already on its way. (Not Kiwi Lime Pie). The rumor is this will be coming/to be announced within next 30 days.
According to Android Central,
Now, here is a bit of news to get the "Android" blood pumping! Hot on the heels of earlier rumors that the next Nexus phone will be based on the LG Optimus G, we have a new rumor that takes goes a step further.
According to sources over at Androidandme, the next Nexus phone is still going to be based on the LG Optimus G. Even more exciting is that we will supposedly see the device officially announced within the "next 30 days," and it will be coming with a point release update Android version 4.2. This new version of Jelly Bean will supposedly have quite a few new features, including "multi-user logins, enhanced Maps, enhanced dialer, enhanced camera features, and native support for wireless display standards like Miracast."

Below is from Andropolice,
The Customization Center
This one has me the most intrigued. Apparently, it will be an area where users can change ringtones, languages, backgrounds, launchers, wallpapers, and presumably anything else to make the device "their own." Most of this stuff can already be done from the Settings menu, so it sounds like the Customization Center is going to be a central place to take care of it all, which is a little more user friendly. I can get behind that.
The UI changes are said to go deeper than that, too. The CC will offer "templates" that can be applied to the entire system, including icons. Sounds kind of like the theme engine that's been in CyanogenMod for quite some time now. This will be a quick way of letting manufacturers include their custom UI without pushing it on users. In theory, it should also mean that the custom overlay is a separate entity of sorts, so OEMs could push OTA updates to just the skin. Think of the possibilities there - the newest version of stock Android can be pushed to the device, and users will only have to wait for the updated skin. As incredible as that sounds, though, take it for what it is: a rumor, and pure speculation. I'm going to say that one more time, for the sake of clarity: pure speculation.
Updated Google Play, Google Now, and Video Player
It's a new Nexus, and a new version of Android. Of course there are going to be new apps to go along with it. According to A&M's source, Google Now will continue to improve (why wouldn't it?), and will offer new features especially for first-time Android users, like the ability to ask questions such as "where can I turn on Wi-Fi?" or the like. No more searching for things! Just ask your phone how to do it.
Also getting some new tricks is Google Play, which will supposedly be seeing "personalized search, optional promotional campaigns with notification center integration, more billing options, and easier in-app micro-transactions." All incremental differences, but differences nonetheless.
Finally, the video player will be getting a much-needed overhaul, which will include APIs so that other services can utilize it.
Project Roadrunner
When I think of "roadrunner," I think of the crazy-fast bird that Wile E. Coyote is always trying to get his hands (and teeth) on. Tangentially, I think of speed. Apparently, that's not what Project Roadrunner does, though. It's all about stamina and longevity; in short, it's about something near and dear to all of our hearts: battery life.
Project Roadrunner is said to do for the battery what Project Butter did for overall system polish and smoothness. Past that, we've got nothing. Still, it sounds fan-freakin'-tastic. Bring it.
Conclusion
What we have here are a collection of things that were said from one person to another. Does that mean they're immediately untrue? No, and given A&M's confidence in their source, we're actually leaning towards the opposite. Of course, that doesn't mean they are true, either. Just like with all other rumors, take them with a grain of salt. Or in this case, several grains.

Agreed. I'm hoping to have a long and prosperous relationship with many Android builds to come.
Well hmmm...
A firmware injection to JBeans could start a war or maybe just 39 new threads...
K I'm ready now.

Wow, these rumors sound really good, but I am not sure how true they are. I am actually happy with my phone's battery life, I am still hoping for new development with project butter to get rid of all lags.We are still not at iPad-level smoothness yet.
Project Butter sped my Nexus up to incredible UI speeds, but I can't see them making a significant change to battery life. My Galaxy Nexus will always die at 4 hours screen on (on a good day). Let's just hope that the new Nexus is a bit more thought out.

Part of the problem is its a long process.
Google creates new version
Source given to devs for each manufacturer
Manufacturer overlays custom bits (like Touchwiz for Samsung)
Testing
Manufacturer contacts carrier for approval
Carrier's devs add customizations, bloatware, etc.
Testing
Carrier gets approval from manufacturer
Testing
once everyones OK with everything and it all checks out OK, release to public
Since half the process is not needed for our tablets and since there is very little that changes from stock google to the Infinity the process for us is very short.
For, say, the Samsung Galaxy 3 the process is a long and tedious one. This is also why for the same phone from different carriers the updates will come at different times.
Google also made an agreement with many manufacturers and carriers. Basically, Google agreed to slow down releases of updates (so everyone could keep up) and devices would see updates for at least 18 months. For more information on this check out the "Android Update Alliance".
Hopes for the AUA seem short lived however since many devices are still not seeing any updates to ICS let alone JB. In fact, somewhere in the neighborhood of half of all android devices are still on gingerbread. Yay! :/

Certainly sounded good on paper. And with Motorola, a division of Google, not abiding by its commitment there's little incentive for others to stick to the agreement.
Android users outraged over Motorola's broken promise
Company concedes some customers got "a raw deal" in decision not to upgrade 2011 flagship devices to Ice Cream Sandwich
Doran Else bought his Photon 4G last October, lured by the fast dual-core processor and by the close relationship between Motorola and its new owner, Google. Motorola had recently joined the Android Upgrade Alliance, promising to release operating system updates to all its phones for 18 months following their release.
But for Else and thousands of others, those operating system updates turned out to be a mirage. Last Friday, buried in a Motorola forum, the company quietly abandoned its update pledge, killing off plans to ever update the Photon 4G. The Electrify, a re-branded Photon available on the US Cellular network, and the Atrix 4G, a flagship phone that debuted on AT&T in the United States, got the axe as well.
"Just seems they were happy to join the alliance when it helped them sell handsets," Else said in an e-mail. "Now that it's time to do the work, they're all dropping devices. This latest announcement from Moto is just ridiculous."
The result is that Else and thousands of people in the middle of two-year carrier contracts will have to use Android 2.3, known as Gingerbread, for the foreseeable future. Motorola had promised owners of the Photon, Electrify, and Atrix an upgrade to to Android 4.0, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, which would bring a host of new features and security updates. Instead they are stuck on Gingerbread, an operating system that was already a year old when Else bought his phone.

I am not sure everyone is aware of this, but the latest article on Android and Me stated that all these information above are indeed fake
http://androidandme.com/2012/10/news/retraction-recent-android-4-2-rumors-were-fake/
You are correct. They are calling it one of the greatest thought out hoaxes of our time.
I have a Razr Maxx with Verizon. It has a fantastic battery that on 4G lte lets me get through an entire day on a single charge. I use it as a GPS device with my BT ear piece, a cameria for those spur of the moment emeories which are posted on facebook or to DropBox. Its my data collector for Word or Excel documents again through DropBox, Internet surfing during the day for news as well as interesting facts. I currently have it updated to ICS without being rooted. I am surprised that other cell phone manufacturers have not jumped on whos ever battery is inside of the unit. I start out the day at 100% and end up most days at between 35% to 15% remaining charge on the battery.
you guys hear about the nexus 10 ?it's supposed to have a 2500*1600 display !!!

Mmhm.. ans the S3 was meant to have a flexible 1080p display with mind-reading tech so I'd take that resolution with a whole rock of salt. Unless they're properly solid like with the Nexus 7 or iPhone 5, I generally don't trust rumours.

Well actually the flexible oled screens aren't too far away...though we're still probably a few years off, it's still cool

A Nexus 10 with a 2560x1600 screen just isn't possible at Nexus prices.
Nexus 13 with a 3840x2400 screen WHEN?
I'm not buying no scrappy in-between resolution that's not 1080p or QuadHD. No upscaling for me thank you very much.

If it comes out, I will buy it for sure but it won't be for a while. My guess is at the earliest March 2013 i.e. compete against 4th generation iPad.
The reason for this speculation is Samsung had just released their 10.1 inch tablet WITHOUT full HD screen. So releasing such nexus device would simply kill off the Note 10.1, which I don't think any company would do.
But it is exciting rumor/news, and I am looking forward to it. But until then, Infinity would be the one I need.
This was a good idea (however fruitless it may turn out to be) that I stole from the Galaxy 7.7 forum.

Dear HTC,
Update the MyTouch 4G Slide to Android 4.0+!!!

Honestly I don't think anyone would care whether it was ICS or Jelly Bean at this point, but the phone desperately needs an update to the stock ROM. Would be nice if we could get at least ICS with Sense 4!
Not gonna work

way too late at this point
There might (just might) be an update coming from HTC at some point. One of the gov't agencies (can't remember if it was FTC or FCC) ruled against HTC last month in a major case. The result is that HTC will have to update a LOT of older phones in order to comply with the ruling. There were rumors that HTC had been working on an ICS update for our phone but ceased work due to budget issues. So, to comply with the gov't ruling, they might resume work on what they've done and release the update. Or, they could just release some lame-ass patch just to comply. But, regardless, there will probably be some sort of update coming from HTC/T-Mobile for this phone in the coming months.
EDIT: It was the FTC, here is the ruling: http://ftc.gov/opa/2013/02/htc.shtm

Done; and answer.....from HTC USA
HTC USA Sorry, .... The MyTouch 4g Slide will not be upgraded to ICS.
maybe more post on their side will change something...((
P.S I'm very fu. angry because there is nothing good / new with slide keyb, and, despite the fact that this equipment has a good performance, they do not want to update it, but it does not give anything with slide. ahhhh!!!!!
HTC deserve all the spam for not updating this device. Its all their fault because they didn't market it as a high end device which it is. And also failed to release an international version. The DS is a great device and still deserves more from HTC
We ALL understand your frustrations. But I'm afraid this flagship has already sailed. This is really a Sensation with a slideout KB and look what they've done for it. But really the only thing that big companies like HTC pay any attention to is marketshare. You know....their own bottom line.
Do what you will but when the time comes, I'm taking my business elsewhere. When they finally figure out that people are sick of being taken in on a worthy $500 phone by sending it out with a big hole in the hull & they all know it's sinking they MAY rethink their business model. But until that happens I'd love to see them have to name the next "biggie" they put out the Titanic.
Maybe they will see then that THEY weren't sunk by an iceberg but by a little ole Ice Cream Sandwich. KWIM?

I'm definitely NOT buying HTC anymore. They suckered me in twice, on this phone and a Flyer tablet. Never again. And I think a lot of people feel the same way, HTC is sinking, their sales are in the toilet, nobody is buying their stuff.

I'm definitely in agreement here, and it seems that a lot of us share the same feelings ever since HTC and Tmo decided to pretend our phone never happened. I only found out about the phone because it was an insurance replacement for my g2, which apparently wasn't available at all for replacement (refurb or not). I hadn't heard anything about the MT4GS, and the phone had released about a week prior to my swap, which goes to show you how Tmo dropped the ball on marketing. I will say that it was a marked improvement over the g2 and that i've enjoyed my time with it for the most part. However, even bone stock I would get random soft reboots and other quirks that generally went away once I rooted and rom'd.
It wound up being my third HTC phone in a row, and probably my last for some time because of the way we got treated on this device. Not to mention their current lineup (minus DNA) is pretty meh. A friend has a One X that I've had some time on, which is a pretty cool phone mind you, but not that impressive. I guess I'm going to take business to Samsung for the next one, as they irk me the least out of the android OEMs these days. I'd jump on an N4, but the whole cloud thing doesn't go over too well when you don't have consistent 4g or wifi all the time. Unfortunately, New England's geography wreaks havoc on signal in a lot of places and reliance on cloud storage just isn't ideal. Locally stored files ftw.
At the time, the official excuse for our device not getting updated was something about user experience and not working out to expectations, but as we all know that is a load of bull, since the devs here have pulled out the stops in keeping the device up to date. Granted not everything works 100% on these roms, without any source we're doing pretty darn good in this corner and there are no complaints from me about their hard work. Members of this community (and beyond) have attempted to get HTC to budge to no avail... about a year ago. There's no hope at this point of any official anything. And that sucks.
As an aside, has anyone else noticed how visually similar our mysense and sense 4 are? I definitely remember seeing the sense 4 launcher when it first dropped on a few phones and thinking that it looked a lot like our stock one.
I tried not to wall of text but I can't help it. Sorry guys and gals.
I've been looking at the Sony phones. For many years, I never considered anything Sony (after their rootkit fiasco), but that was a long time ago and I do believe their corporate policies are not as draconian. For their Android phones, they're putting out some really nice hardware and they are UPDATING them regularly. Even some of their older stuff is getting updates to JB. And their build quality is markedly better than Samsung. The Nexus phones are probably my primary interest because I'm just tired of hoping for updates. But, I'll probably wait until the next Nexus as I'm just not blown over by the Nexus 4.

With only chatter about what the next Nexus "might" be I'll stick with my Nexus 4. There is not.... Let me say that again while I still can...there is not a faster device out there. Yeah of course some have huge screens and huge 6k mah batteries but they still can't keep up.
I don't keep much on my phone so I rock the 8GB with zero issues.

I'm looking at Sony phones too. Pretty sure I'm going to get my gf and I the Z/ZL (she's a klutz, so she needs the waterproofing :silly
If the leaks of the SG4 are real, it's just a huge honkin phone/mini Note 3. I don't WANT a giant screen held to my face, and when I want to watch a movie or do some power browsing I have a TABLET for that.
