[Q] Anyone having trouble transferring files on Xoom - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was running Hammerhead and all was fine, could transfer any type of file from PC to Internal Storage or SDCARD through Explorer. Now I upgraded to Moray 2.2.1 and I cannot transfer .mkv files.
I transfer an avi it's ok.
Rename the avi to mkv and it fails.
Rename back to avi and it works
Rename a mkv to avi and it fails.
The error I keep getting is 'Windows explorer has stopped working' then 'Explorer is restarting'. Typical non descriptive crap.
I am running Windows 7 will all of microsoft updates. It was running fine before like this.
Any help would be great guys. I really don't want to reload my Xoom, but I am headed to Niagara Falls on Sunday and need to take it with me.
UPDATE:
Just loaded my backup of Hammerhead and the same thing happens. Damn, now I have to consider my computer is crapped out.
Thanks.

I always had that problem from day one with the Xoom out of the box. The only way I was able to transfer .mkv files was to put them in a .zip file first then transfer and unzip with Astro or HD File Explorer. That should work for you until someone smarter than me can give you a permanent remedy that doesn't include the whole .zip file deal.
I should add that I use Win 7 and the issue exist with all .mkv files regardless of size.

Did that work for you?

It does work for me. But I swear I was able to transfer files before just with drag and drop onto the SDCARD.
Oh well. I just I will skin the cat the other way.
Thanks for the help.

If anyone else has this issue you can also just try to change the file extension to something like .jpg transfer the file then change it back to .mkv.

I recently renamed all the files .mkv1 and left them that way. Now they all transfer no problem.
Using MX video player I am able to tell it the new extension is a video file. Never have to change it again.

I seem to have more luck transferring files using WiFi File Explorer. You could try that and see if it helps.

Windows Media 9 codecs on WM6/TCPMP

Hi there, is there any way I can watch this video (for example: mms://sdmc.contents.edgestreams.net/horsgv/regions/siege/infos/f2/20h/HD_20h_20070904.wmv?WMCache=0) on my SP5m with TCPMP 0.72RC1. So far, only the audio works, it says "video codec (Windows Media 9) not supported by the player". My smartphone is running WM6 (english perfect edition). I also tried using the built-in Windows Media player to play it but without success, it says "an unknown error occured". Same with the software "Streaming Media" which looks like it opens a rtsp:// link only, it won't work because it won't load a mms:// link.
I thought those Windows Media 9 codecs were installed by default, are they? I say this because I kind of remember playing a video on TCPMP that was using a WM9 video codec...
If I need to install that codec, how would I do that? Where would I find it?
Any help would be really appreciated! Thank you all for your time.

...same problem here - maybe this will help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-299662.html
Edit 1: worked fine on my Ameo with WM6 - jus copy the 2 dll files(from this Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298126 ) inthe windows directory of your ppc - then install tcpmp 0.81 und wmv are running in good quality 6 you also hear Audio
Works like a charm for me as well, I copied the 2 missing dlls (1 file copied, 1 file overwrited) into Windows directory and tadam, it worked even without rebooting, I was able of looking my news stream. Thanks all!
hello,
can someone please help me? I've upgraded to Windows Mobile 6. I've signed up for ORB and i wanted to use tcpmp as my default player for playing videos but i keep getting the same errors...
Can't Play WMA File
Can't Play WMV9 File
now i did try copying both .dll files to my "smartphone" and when i did go into my smartphone, i couldn't see the files, they were hidden - how do you go about doing this? i'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out here.
now, my question is - is it because these files were extracted from a ppc device and i need smartphone specific files? can someone please help, thanks.

Have you plugged the phone into your computer and copy pasted the file over?
I am not sure where to start, how new are you to smartphones?

I am pretty new. I have not pasted the file over. I guess mainly I am just wanting to know what directory I need to put the file in? Do I need to create a directory? I have Droid Explorer working, and Root Explorer installed on the phone.
Ringtones:
path /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
ringtones. note, they must be of a certain size, I cant remember what, but it will tell you at the time of assignment
Notifications:
path /sdcard/media/audio/notifications
ditto to the ringtones.
NOTE:
/sdcard is what android sees it as.
When you mount it in to your computer, it will just be /media/audio/ringtones.
I'd also like to suggest Free application RingDroid http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.ringdroid for on-phone editing of ringtones from sound files. Very useful, very friendly, works quite well.
The file directory is:
sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
You should be fine using the default My Files app and not Root Explorer. Make sure to convert the MP3 to a WAV file.

Samsung Captivate (rooted)

DO you have to use WAV? I use mp3s for my ringtones and they work just fine..
mp3s are fine. and no size restriction. i've used up to 5meg files. it only plays the first 30 seconds, but it doesn't seem to have a size restriction.
if you want a specific part of the song, i recommend Audacity. easy free audio editor
ok, I created a folder /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
I then dropped a 1MB MP3 into that folder, I then noticed in the notification bar that the media scanner had started. But when I go to the sound and display menu and look under voice call ringtones, the mp3 I put in there isnt in the list. How do I get android to add it to the list?
Edit: Nevermind. I found out what was going on. Android browser had downloaded the mp3 and for some reason gave it the file extension of .mpga Once I renamed it from *.mpga to *.mp3 it worked fine.
You do not need to create /sdcard, it is the main directory. I also recommend converting the MP3 to WAV.
why do you recommend it? there isn't any need to convert the file...is it just personal preference?

THE free trial version of audacity now overlays a "Voice Logo" on any file you use it to create - basically every 5 seconds you hear "AVS Media Demo"
i tried using it last night to edit the mp3 file from that samsung promotional video
ended up downloading adobe audtion 3, you get full use of the program, free for 30 days with no logo overlay

I had no problems copying the files to the xoom. The problem is once you get them there, your video will likely stutter and have no sound. The video playback on most vids I have tried are horrible.
I have the same problem.. explorer crashes the instant i try to copy a mkv file to the xoom
If you have WiFi, try pulling the files using the Xoom and an app like AndroXplorer. Don't know why Explorer is crashing for some as it works fine for me also using Windows 7 x64.

Pretty sure the Xoom uses an ext file system so support for larger files is there.

Uninstall the DIVX codec from both computers.
For some reason, DIVX tries to access the files, which results in an windows-explorer crash. Filesize isn't an issue (well, 7GB worked for me).
It doesn't have much purpose unless you are using non-HD MKV files though. If the MKV has x264/h264/avc video, they are very likely high-profile, and there is currently no player capable of playing 720p+ MKV's with that video format properly. Hardware doesn't play them at all, and the software-mode (the ffmpeg lib most of them use) isn't optimized for Tegra2 yet, resulting in stuttering playback.

I had the same problem, try this, on windows, tools, folder options, view and tick show icons never thumbnails then apply. This worked on getting quite a few mkvs over to the xoom, still had a problem with a couple of TV shows and they were under 1gb each.
I dont know why it crashes but I found a quick fix. I notice that windows crashes when I try to transfer any file large or small with the mkv extension but it doesn't mind transffering picture files like jpg.
Just change the mkv extension to something like jpg. It should transfer fine and then change the extension back to mkv after it finishes
ENJOY!
I had the same problem with Transformer Prime and Win 7 Ultimate. I got everything work just changing few options for shark007 codec pack. Run Shark007 codecs Settings Application as admin and then change on MKV tab options Disable the DivX Media Foundation splitter to selected and Thumbnails On/Off to disable thumbnails. After these changes explorer did not crash for me.

Not on the internal and external sdcards. If it did, you wouldn't be able to see them in windows explorer when you connected it to the puter.

Android AVI Reader

Waited like an hour for my phone to sync a movie and I downloaded a couple of apps to try and open the .avi file but not success, if anyone can advise me or point me in the direction to an app that will play .avi files.thx

I use mxplayer. If it still doesn't play, your avi is corrupt.

That is actually what I used. But I didn't know how to add the file
[Edit] I got it, just had to move the video out of the torrent file and moved it into my videos folder.

[Q] Transferring Videos from Xbox Video on Desktop to Surface

I'm having an annoying problem. I downloaded all the videos I've purchased through Xbox Video to my desktop computer, and want to transfer them to my Surface. I've done this via a Micro SD card, but for some reason, none of them are showing up in the Xbox Video app on my Surface. They're all in the Videos library, under the correct file structure with the correct file names, but for some reason they're not listed.
I renamed one of the videos to [vidoeo-file-name]-desktop.wmv, re-downloaded the same video on my Surface, and it showed up with the exact same file size and properties as my old video, but I can play that video in Xbox Video just fine.
I tried copying my entire Xbox Video folder from my desktop's AppData to my Surface's AppData, and the videos still aren't showing up, but the one I re-downloaded still shows up.
I'm thinking there must be some database somewhere on the machine that tells Xbox Video what videos have been downloaded. Does anyone have an idea on where I could look for that file? Even if it's not editable, I could just copy over the file from my desktop to my Surface, and it should fix it.
Thanks.

That's not the problem, I've already used the NTFS mounted folder method to get the SD card mapped to the Video library. Files from Xbox Video correctly download to the card, and files on the card correctly show up in the Videos library. But for some reason, my shows aren't available offline, even though I have the files with the correct paths in Videos library. That leads me to believe there must be a database of downloaded files somewhere on the device, and it just doesn't "see" the files that where transferred from another device.
