Going from miui to cm7 - Captivate General

I just flashed miui and am having all kinds of issues with it. I think I'm going to try cm7 and was wondering if i can flash straight from rom manager or should i go back to stock first?

I recommend flashing back to stock just to be safe. Only adds 20 minutes tops if using Odin.
Cm7 has been great. Even though its nightly, I have had no issues.

Is there just the nightly rom? I thought there was a stable one too...
And I was hoping I could just flash it since miui uses the cm7 kernel anyway.

So I flashed back to stock first, rooted, then tried to install cwm via rom manager but it wouldn't work. It would download, then ask for superuser rights, and then do nothing. Anyway, I just clicked reboot into recovery and it went to the stock recovery. Pressed reinstall packages, it did some stuff, then it went back into stock recovery. So I reinstalled packages again and it switched to cwm. Everything has been normal since. Installed cm7 no problem and lovin it.

[Q] Rooted thunderbolt, can't flash roms.

I rooted my thunderbolt according to this:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/thu...9-mac-procedure-how-root-htc-thunderbolt.html
(I have a mac).
Everything was swell and I installed Superuser and could use rooted apps.
I upgraded my radio from stock to MR2.5 so I could flash a gingerbread rom.
Everytime I try and flash a gingerbread rom via Bootloader, it'll give me a warning sign that looks a little like this...
I can go back to stock, but since I upgraded the radio, the phone has no signal.
Aren't you suppose to flash the rom then fastboot and let the radio flash.

Oh wow. I feel stupid, seems like I couldn't understand. -_-
Can I do anything with the phone? Or would I just have to hard reset it, then go back to stock?
Or like could I downgrade the radio? (downgrading seems a bit risky).
Have you tried flashing the ROM via clockwork recovery? Try doing that instead of using the bootloader to flash the rom. I've personally flashed a gingerbread radio from bootloader, then flashed an update.zip from recovery and had everything work just fine.

I just tried it. It worked, but it's taking forever to boot up. I think it may be stuck at the "Thunderbolt" sign (with the little thunderbolt).
Is that normal?
EDIT: I got it working. Thank you guys.

Can't get into recovery, can't flash different rom/kernel. Help!

alright i've been up all night and i have no idea what i did. i guess we'll start from the top.
one clicked rooted
downloaded rom manager
installed cwm
installed bionix frost rom
decided to mess with voodoo
and where it gets messy...
wanted to try out a gingerbread rom, so flashed after a full wipe
forgot to turn off voodoo
now when i try to get to the recovery screen, its all garbled. sometimes it doesnt even come up.
on top of that, i cant mount the sd card anyway. what should i do?
Do not use rom manager use the cmw from krylons post. To install gb you need gb bootloaders. So. Install kg4 leak by chadster than isnatll kg4 kernel than flash your gb rom thru cmw and walla..

I got used Odin to flash that hawk.zip from another post to get it back to stock. I've never really dealt with partitions before, so it'll take some getting used to making sure everything is mounted.
Wouldn't work on my computer and I was up all night trying to figure out how to wipe and flash from adb lol. Feels good to finally get some sleep.
I'll make sure to read guides more throughly before flashing on phones I don't own lol.

[Q] How to get Red CWM

I was running Infused 2.2.3 for the longest time and when I always went into recovery it was red.
Well, I was switching roms and got a hiccup in the install and had to revert back to stock using odin and gtg unbrick.
Once I was back to stock froyo, I rooted, replaced the recovery.bin file with the no sig file and then went into rom manager and got cwm, rebooted, reinstalled packages, etc...
Well I have cwm, but when I get into it, its green lettering...not red.
Only reason I ask is because just about everywhere I see, they say get into red.
Any ideas on how I can get red installed?
thanks

When in cwm, choose to install zip from SD card and go all the way to bottom and select "update.zip" and if it doesn't reboot, select reboot now and it should boot into Red CWM. That might do it i think

Flash Entropy's daily driver kernel. You'll get red CWM and voodoo lagfix. Great kernel by the way.

thanks, I will prob have a rom with a stock kernel...if thats the case, can I flash entropys kernel (which is my choice one on custom roms) through odin in the pda slot?
thanks for the help.
I will only want to flash a custom kernel to get root, then back to stock because the rom I will be running is based on one of the newer leaks, and I want video.

Well you need to have a kernel with voodoo enabled like Entropy's or you can't get red cwm. The stock leaks HAVE to have a stock kernel for video to work however. Oh, and yes you can. You can do that or through SGS Kernel Flasher on the market. What do you need red for anyway?
Don't forget, if I helped you, hit thanks please

[Q] recovery mode disappeared!

Hey guys,
I bought a Samsung galaxy s 4g the other day and immediately wannted to flash a ROM.
So I browsed around and found this ROM here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321611&page=4
I had the clockwork mod already(words were red) so I put it on my sd card and installed from zip.. Everything worked fine but while it starts up my screen gets full of colorful squigly lines before it starts.. But I figured its not a problem. The ROM is pretty kool...(im using it now) but when I try to go back into the clockword mod recovery...I get those same squiggly lines and then my phone restarts .... I tried quickboot but it wont work either...
My previous firmware was froyo 2.2. And this ROM is 2.3.6
Does that matter? Did I permanently damage my phone? Please...help wil be appreciated dearly.
Thanks
You have to install gb bootloaders... Search fbis251, he has made a guide to get it done
P.s
You have to select "reinstall package" from stock recovery to get into cwm recovery

I'm currently running 2.3.6 KJ6 with drhonk's KJ1 flashed over it, and custom debloater flashed over that. When I tried to go back to Froyo I had problems because recovery gave a signature verification error in and would not install any .zips. I flashed back to 2.3.6 via ODIN (which I assume included the gb bootloaders) and everything works perfectly, EXCEPT I cannot make a CWM backup of my current setup, only of specific apps and data I designate using Titanium Backup.
When I go into ROM Manager and select "backup current ROM" it says CWM is not installed! then it asks me to install, and gives choices for 4 phones none of which mactch exactly, just the galax si9000. So far I have been to scared to try this, I don't want to mess anything up and I KNOW clockwork recovery red is working... should I install this and will it make it so I can make a perfect backup of my entire phone?

ROM manager should not be used on this phone, assuming you have a sgs4g.
If you Odin'd ravers stock kj6 you should have cwm recovery, giving you the ability to make a back up if not consider flashing it

[Solved] [Q] Help! Can't succesfully flash roms...

Hi, I just need alot of help! I've been a rogers captivate owner for a year and i've rooted, sim unlocked, flashed many, MANY roms with success. I have also soft bricked my cappy a few times but odin restored it back to stock every time where i started over.
So basically, i soft bricked my cappy, used odin to restore to stock rogers gingerbread 2.3.3 , rooted, used odin to install corn kernel and now every time i wipe data and everything in recovery and flash a rom, it says successful but when i restart, it just gets stuck at the " samsung I896 " screen and doesn't go any further. I can't go into recovery or do anything, but i can succesfuly odin back to stock gb. I've used this same procedure many times before and it always worked but not this time. The only difference there was, was that when it got soft bricked this time, I was going from MIUI JB to Paranoid Android JB instead of ics or gb custom roms.
Can anyone please please help me out here? I really hate stock samsung roms and I LOVED JB when i had it, and i really want it back! I would really appreciate anyone's help! Thankyouuu !
[EDIT] Thankyou everyone who tried to help, i figured it out and resolved the problem, the problem was i was wiping data/factory reseting in cwm which i shouldn't have been doing.
What about using Odin to flash a kernel compatible with the Paranoid Rom, then flash the Rom through that kernel's recovery...

Yeah, but paranoid android comes with its own recovery, and oh i forgot to mention, i have tried many times, and sometimes after i flash the paranoid rom, and reboot, the phone will boot but directly to recovery when i normally boot it, so i can flash the rom through its own recovery but still it just boots into recovery directly nothing else, and then i go back to stock and i've been on stock for like a month now, but im really missing paranoid androidd.
Wait i think i found the solution guys please helpp ! on stock when im about to flash the new rom, do i clear user data/ wipe data whatever it is in cwm ? Im doing that with faliure, am i not supposed to?
