I know that my question has been answered in countless threads.... but what I'm hoping to do is get this information compiled into one thread (and if it exists already, please point me there).
What I'm wondering is who's stock, who's rooted, what ROM you're running and if you had any issues.
I'm really not looking for any fixes to problems in this thread, just a simple compilation to get percentages, because I like to play the numbers.
I'll even start:
Stock Inspire with official sideloading and custom APN for hotspot
Only a random occurance where screen rotation stops
Owned since April 22
I've run LeeDroid and Android Revolution so far. With both ROM's I've noticed nice improvements in overall responsiveness of the phone. However, both suffer slight lag from the application Slacker Radio (just in case you enjoy streaming music ) that builds up over time to the point where I have to reset my phone just to continue to use it.
With LeeDroid, I've noticed that my Pandora app doesn't give it lag, or such a small amount that I don't really notice/care about it.
I've run a lot of Radio's (With their RIL) so I won't go into that, but the only Kernel I've ever played with was the oen for LeeDroid. Dunno if it actually did anything.
LeeDroid also, of the two (three if you count stock) ROM's I've run has the best battery life by far. Can't really go into official numbers since I've been tweaking my phone non-stop for a week now working out a few signal/speed bugs, however I've noticed that I don't have to plug it into my external battery except once a day, even after tweaking and adjusting non-stop for 4-6 hours.
So yeah, that's my take on it. If you're willing to sit down and play with things to get it to work, I'd say go for it. If you want something quick and easy, then I'd suggest maybe holding off a bit and enjoying stock.
Well, I ran my phone bone stock for the first 3 weeks of owning it, then rooted without any issue using bubby's simple root method.
Waited another ~1.5 months before flashing the rom I'm using now, Inspired Ace.
The rom has been a flawless, near stock (sense) gingerbread experience. I often forget I even flashed anything, except for the little gingerbread differences, of course.
Seriously, my guess is that an offical gb release from HTC for this phone would look nearly identical to this rom.
Haven't done anything radio-wise aside from flashing the matching ril for the stock radio. I haven't even updated to the new OTA radio yet.

Nah. I've actually been getting the "itch."
There's so many roms to check out, and I'm running out of excuses not to try some.
I'm just still a little hazy on some of the pre-flashing procedures, mainly cwr related. Like differences between "wiping" and format /system, /data, etc.
I'm finding that trying too hard to avoid misery before it happens results in perpetual inaction, though.

I just got the Inspire last week (my first Android phone), and I can't help but tinker, so I've rooted and put a custom ROM on already. (LeeDroid and now CyanogenMod 7) I found these two video guides to be very helpful, as I wasn't familiar with a lot of the terminology people throw around.
Rooting:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCcd1XQrTzE
Custom ROM:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUUo9EMlT5Y
Be warned, this took me a lot longer than I anticipated (a couple of hours total, but I was multi tasking. [multi tasking = watching Game of Thrones]).
I really like CM7, it feels faster than stock and my battery life seems better as well.
Good luck!
I ran Stock for about 2 days. No known Issues.
I then Rooted and Ran Bubby's one click and ran the rooted stock RUU for about 3 days. No Known issues.
I then flashed Ace Inspired. It was fantastic. I ran it for about 2 days. Only issue I had was screen would stick in rotation. It just wouldn't move. A Reboot fixed it. I made a back so I could easily return to it. I haven't.
I then flashed Leedriod. I have been running this rom since. Its amazing. I have seen no issues. I Also made a Backup of this rom so I could easily return to it. I have.
I then flashed Gingerbeast yesterday. Its fast and clean. But...Sirius Radio would randomly disconnect. Wireless would random disconnect. Bluetooth stuttered.
I returned to Leedriod this morning. Again, no issues.
When my inspire was stock everything seemed to work like it should. Except I had one huge problem, and its a problem that I have had with any phone from at&t, I had absolutely zero service here in southwest Wisconsin where I'm going to school.
I then decided to root in hopes that with a new radio I could get signal. I went with Leedroids Rom and kernel and couldn't be happier. Now I get full service edge! I didn't even have to mess with the radio.
I still can't believe that with those two changes I get great service. I'm comparing to 3 phones all on the same network, razr, blackjack 2, and Samsung flight 2. The inspire was the second to worst service here, now blows all of the other phones out of the water.
Thanks Leedroid!!

I keep seeing people getting ripped for rooting business phones. I'm a self employed IT tech, and I use my phone for everything from remote access (RDP& TeamViewer) to mobile doc (Docs2Go) to social networking to business calls to gaming to kill time.
Would I be stupid to root this phone?

Thanks Tx, I appreciate that. I have yet to flash a rom the "regular" way, that is, other than rom manager, with the exception of rooting, but that was rather automated, so having these step-by-steps is extremely helpful.

Not necessarily. There was a recent thread where someone was having problems with sound quality on his phone, which he depended on heavily for work, but i suspected other factors involved with that.
I'll tell you right now, this here phone in my hands is work-ready. Rooted and flashed a stable non-stock rom.
If anything, maybe if you had a backup phone just as a CYA type of thing for the process and a "burn-in" period, in case you run into some speedbumps along the way.
I mean, if you plan on going off hard on the flashing thing, then just due to the shear number of rom changes, something is bound to get a little goofy on the software end, but not anything that isn't fixable, for the most part.
When you start getting careless with things like partitioning or radio flashing, then you could run into some serious problems.

A few points:
-it's very, very hard to brick your phone by rooting and flashing roms, so if you're stressing about that at all, don't. It only gets dicey is you are flashing radios via fastboot or messing with ENG-OFF. You don't need to do either of those things, and you won’t either accidentally.
-tinkering and trying many roms is very easy. If you do a nandroid backup (aka a backup with Clockworkmod recovery), you’re golden. It takes about 5 minutes to do a backup. If you want to come back to the previous rom, simply restore in Clockworkmod recovery. EVERYTHING will restore as it was before. After you do a backup, boot up and rename the backup file to something meaningful, like “Dilligaf5-20110534”. Make sure there are no spaces in the name, or Clockworkmod recovery will upchuck. The backup files are on your SD card in the \clockworkmod\backup directory. I have a collection of 10 backup roms. I can restore any one of them in 5 minutes with all my settings intact.
-if you are going from froyo to froyo or gb to gb, you can used Titanium backup to backup and restore sms/mms. Just backup “dialer storage”. When you get your new rom up, restore dialer storage. You will have to reboot after you restore in order to see your sms/mms messages.
-buy Setcpu and root explorer.
-checkout the rom kitchen. You can do lots of neat stuff like changing the battery meter, status bar, icons, fonts, animation, and boot animation. http://uot.dakra.lt/
-AOSP roms like CM7 and others are very fast and have good battery life, but some the apps are not as feature-rich. For example e-mail is missing a lot of options.
-GB roms (like LeeDroid and AR) are nice, but to me, GB doesn’t really have that much to offer over Froyo. LeeDroid has a great kernel and battery life. It also has a really nice call recorder. From a UI perspective
-My favorite rom is Dilligaf 2.0. You should give it a try.
Since I can't delete, just ignore this post. Lol

I knew it was really a matter of "when" not "if" (My iPhone was JB when I bought it.... A guy wanted it unlocked, so I JB it for him and then saw that it was 3.1.3 before they had released the exploit for that baseband, so I bought it _CHEAP_)
Anyway, Looks like I have a project for this weekend
Since this is my thread, I'll feel free to derail it a bit.....
Any reviewsa on MIUI? I like Sense, but mostly just b/c I think that HTC's clock widget is >*, and I see that MIUI's widget is very similar.
You could just buy beautiful widgets and use it on whatever rom you prefer.

I rooted and tried several ROMs. RCMixHD and TB Fusion were both nice, but the keyboard seemed to lag and freexe a good bit on those. Inspired Ace is the ROM I am currently on. I used the battery calibration technique used here to maximize my battery usage. For the battery history section of that thread be sure to grab this app, as the method listed there is not coded into GB ROMs. I have flashed ROMs once or twice and they have not booted, but a simple battery pull and boot to clockworkmod recovery (turn on with power and volume down buttons pressed at the same time then scroll to recovery) to wipe and reflash worked fine.
Well, I now officially have no warranty
Waiting for my SD contents to copy back over, and I think I'll start with Inspired Ace.
I welcome recommendations, but for now I think I'll stick with Sense ROMs.
I'm trying to get CWM going on my SK4G, but with little luck. I've replaced recovery in /system/bin, and put the update.zip on the root of the SD. But after doing so, it will still stick on the boot screen, and not go anywhere. It is not softbricked, however, as I can adb reboot, and it goes right back into the normal OS.
I then tried ODIN-ing back to stock and trying once more, but no dice. What do I do from here?
Search the forum. I reposted sduvick's fake flash utility already. Find it and use it.
Hop on the short bus, newbies.
Here's the CWM fake flash (again).
http://www.mediafire.com/?cedw9551tl1riu5
Root your phone with shortfuse's one click utility first. Then, use this utility. After you get this going, make a backup. Next, ODIN your phone back to stock. Then, root the phone, use this utility again, and use CWM to restore your backup. Now, you know how to handle disasters and you won't need to ask dumb questions.
After that, install one of AYOTEDDY's roms. Skip the new ones because there's nothing new. You just want a stable rom and a kernel with Voodoo lagfix/sound/CWM.
Enjoy.
I see you jump directly to insults. Short bus, mhm.
I'm hardly a newbie, this phone is just being a pain in the arse for something that looks so simple. My main is a GS3 which I flash ROMs frequently, and have used ODIN before. Before that it was an HTC Aria. I picked this one up cheap because I like a physical keyboard.
CWM (Though I prefer TWRP any day of the week) is indeed helpful if you screw up, and ODIN as a last resort. This one is just being a pain in the arse though, and keeps getting stuck on the sidekick logo when going into recovery. (I copy it to the SD then move it into place via Root Explorer)
So, the fake flash isn't working for you?

Hahaha....nice. Why don't you try and make something new, then?
Meh. Theming, scripts, and swapping out apps is easy enough.
I have made KJ2 my own with some dirty hacks, but the biggest benefit over stock is Platypus Egg--and the credit for that goes to ayoteddy.
As for roms, I hacked away at windxixi's and sduvick's source for quite a while. At some point, it's just not worth it anymore... Samsung could have made this easier on everyone... Samsung's "open source releases" are a joke.
bhundeven appears to have also hit a wall, but it sounds like he has more experience and more help at his disposal. More power to him there. Because, a true stock Froyo is really what this device needs to push things forward.
I'll be getting a Relay soon enough, so it won't amount to a hill of beans to me...
And, speaking of new, I've had the most luck avoiding it entirely on the market. Updates these days are getting too bloated to run on this device--and more and more apps have decided it's ok to run as a service. At some point Android needs to crack down on developers that ignore the life cycle that was diagramed when the SDK debuted... Then again, that would make Google hypocrites because Maps ignores the guidelines... To make a long story short, run apps that were actually designed to run on Froyo. It will save you heartache. And, if things are running all the time as a service, it will eat memory and this phone will crash eventually.. every time, guaranteed.

Hello,
i´ve researched on this topic for a while now, but the result is confusing.
Everyone tell a different way to root the LG. Half of the threads are too old with expired download link or not working methods.
And there seems to be a problem with the new baseband when the phone is updated to the "new" 2.3.3. stock rom.
I would like to try the "CyanogenMod" first.
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=p500&type=stable
As I am unsure which ROM to choose from the endless variety of custom ROMs and the CyanogenMod seems to be the most reliable solution.
Important is a smooth and fast OS with the possibility to install (every) App to the SD Card.
thx for any help in advance
Any Ideas?

Hello georg2010 welcome to Xda! now first off we can start with trying to root your phone, older phones on xda start to loose their links as the days go by but hopefully there are a few still up. for now, i want you to use this method to root it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
From there you are going to go to the play market and download an app called "ClockworkMod ROM Manager", open it as soon as its done and choose to install Clockworkmod recovery, should be the first option, you need to be sure that you select your model only, in this case you told us a LG optimus one p500. once its done it might restart but to make sure it worked try this button combo when your device is turned off: Volume Down + Power + Home
post back when your ready to move on ahead.

Yes, the software is clean, most of the time stuff like this people get virus pickups, thousands of people view these forums a day, you would think if it was a real virus it would be Taken down Asap. as for your problem with that program, did you install LG drivers? if not and we still have problems with it, try this instead http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765 download the APK towards the bottom, should be GingerBreak-v1.20.apk put it on your phone, use a file browser like androzip (personally my favorite its on the google play store) find it and install it. open it and follow the directions, make sure to enable usb debugging in settings first, im sure this one will root your device, it normally roots android 2.1-2.3 easily rooted my LG optimus V (same exact phone as yours different carrier)

5) Press the “Flash Clockworkmod Recovery” option
6) Popup appears, asking for your device; select “LGE Optimus One”
7) Another popup will appear giving two options for the basebands:
- LG Optimus One (This is for new baseband)
- LG Optimus One (Old BB) (This is for old baseband)
I would advise you to select Old BB recovery as its more stable; new baseband may result in semi-brick (Personal Experience)

Correct. If your able to get into cwm with no troubles then we can move on. Your going to download cyanogenmod first, for your phone only p500. Then your going to see which version of cyanogenmod you downloaded and download the correct gapps from here http://goo.im/gapps gapps are needed for every rom yoi flash, pretty much it includes all nessesary google items such as gmail and the play store. Put both of these files onto a micro sd card for your phone and your going to first select wipe data, after that choose wipe cache. Once thats finished you are going to select install zip and navigate to where you put the cyanogenmod zip and gapps zip. Flash (fancy way of daying install) the cm7 first, once finished flash the gapps after then reboot if all comes out well.

Well it seems to work.
In some points not what I ´ve expected (I mean here and there still little lags) and so on. But I guess the fun has just begun, so it need a lot of fine tuning. Maybe I will update from CM7 to a higher one because its obviously still "gingerbread" (if this is recommended regarding the available resources on my P500)
But my goal is at first, to be able to move or install every app directly to the SD card. I would like to know how to do that, I´ve read some tutorials about partitioning the SD card and so on. Do you have to create a separate partition for the "apps"?
Although the 200MB space on my phone was nearly completely unused, (which is great becuase on the stock ROM its nearly full even after factory reset) I still would like to use the space on my 16 GB Sd Card, for this purpose.
The second "nice-to-have" feature would be the ability to install officially not compatible apps on my phone.
For example if I want to install "Threema" it says not compatible device in the market.

Well first off, for your lagging problem, its because the device is a little outdated with its Processor which is clocked at 600 MHz. Cyanogenmod allows you to overclock your device to what they think is a safe Clock speed. honestly when i had Cyanogenmod 7 on my Optimus v (same as p500 different carrier) i don't think i got to overclock it past 700 MHz. now you might be wondering if overclocking is as dangerous as computer overclocking, these phones (CPU's) where meant to get packed into small areas on its motherboard if that makes sense. it is completely safe to overclock (there was a Motorola phone i think was the moto atrix, when it first came out, it was clocked at 1 GHz. the ics update had boosted it up to 1.2 GHz.) the most harm it can do is Reboot when it either what i'm guessing cant handle that clock speed or is just a huge jump from different speeds. so pretty much just boost it 5% at a time until it reboots, to overclock i don't remember where you would be able to find it in cyanogenmod 7, i think it might be in something called cyanogenmod settings, the layout between CM7 vs CM9 and up changed quite a bit. but pretty much just look around for it.
as for your SD card problems, i don't know much about partitioning SD cards i don't do much of that. i think Gingerbread (2.3.X or CM7.X) and down had some weird SD card problems and limited taking apps to the SD card, android 4.0.X and up changed and you had more options but Apps were allowed to dump files everywhere onto your SD card making a mess (this is normally through all android versions Except Kitkat 4.4.x lots of people don't mind it but there are others who like it neat) kitkat fixed this and if i remember right kinda broke our way of making apps go to the SD card, you would have to look that up. i would recommend getting a 4.2.X or 4.3.X rom, personally my favorite versions of android. kitkat was not very impressive, if you don't see any of those just Test 4.0.X roms and up until you get something that is enjoyable. i'm looking around for a smaller gapps so we can give you a little more internal space, these small gapps pretty much give you the things you Really only need to use your phone such as the play market and Google play services, it removes like Gmail and hangouts, you will still be able to download them from the play store if you need them or see something missing.
as for your last question, its not that your phone is not officially compatible its because of your android version, i did some research and threema requires ICS 4.0.X and up so if you want to use this app you need to flash a ics or higher rom. remember every time you want to flash a rom, backup, wipe data, wipe cache, flash rom then gapps. i'm surprised you still own this phone, it is outdated at this point but is still a GREAT phone and im glad some people still use it, it was my first android phone and is still a great phone to this day (even if its sitting on my desk for the rest of its days like the rest of my phones lol). if you get stuck please reply back.

The overclocking indeed helps a bit. I think it depends on the Launcher too.
I´ve installed Go Launcher Ex with a simple theme: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex.theme.cblue
And it works much better.
There is a unofficial CM9 for P500
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Unoff....2C_Thrive_.28P506.29.2C_Optimus_T_.28P509.29
but the thread seems to be closed.
Also I don´t know if I just can pick any ROM available, or if I need a specific port for my device.

Thanks this sounds good. I guess this apps cannot be stored on the SD Card. And such like launchers neither. Tried this with Go Launcher Ex, the widgets crashed. - At least if You use the standard way of copying Apps on the SD card through the App manager.
So such performance-relevant stuff should be kept in phone´s storage.

Its a combination of circumstances.
The phone is not so outdated that I had a strong desire to give out money for a new one.
And I like the design becuase its "handy". It´s not so small and not too big.
And if there is a free way to get rid of the slow stock rom, and make it a little bit faster... why not?
The today´s phones, like the Samsung S3-5 are way too big, and most importantly too expensive,
the whole system there is sad, you have to pay like 700€ for a new phone and as soon as they bring out a new model, the price drops instantly.
So you ask yourself do you pay for the hardware or for the "image" or whatever? So if I buy a new phone then I will of course always look for the "outdated" models (which are not in my opinion). Like the S2 or S3, where you still have a good performance, for a good price.
The One Plus One is interesting too, another favorite would be Google Nexus or (to stay loyal) some of the LG smartphones like the L70-L90, its maybe not one of the high end smartphones but still sure a nice performance boost.
The only bad thing about the older phones is the low screen resolution.

the original Stock launcher for Cyanogenmod 7 and below was a launcher called ADW launcher, the company or person who made it tends to try to make it as stock android as possible and honestly the version cyanogenmod 7 came with was not very good. i dont think launchers cant be moved to the sd card but widgets sure cant.
your right, you cant pick any rom you want, it has to be specifically built for your own. cyanogenmod is not the only rom type. most of the time unofficial roms will be built upon cyanogenmod or other roms. there are a few others on some newer phones but cyanogenmod is the stablest and if its official updates on bugs come faster. if you want to find more roms, here on xda you always want to go here for your device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/optimus-one/one-development for roms kernels and other modifications.
honestly if you were to find a used Galaxy s2 the specs would be perfectly fine. all variants have a great development community going and should for the new few android versions. what carrier do you have? i would try to get a T989 T-mobile s2 like myself, its pretty great though its a 4.5" ich screen vs your 3.2" screen its not too big, probably the only problem i have with it is the resolution is not the best. a motorola G would be a great replacement aswell, better specs than the s2 (its very close to a s3 benchmark) same screen size and i think it has a better resolution.
as for today's standards you Are paying for image, paying for the brand name (like alienware and dell computers), back then it used to be Hardware, the Nexus one used to have the Best phone specs when it was released. if you look at benchmarks, the Galaxy s4 vs the s5 there is not much of a difference. i myself am interested in the oneplus one device but the only problem is that invite system. im also thinking of grabing a LG L90, great price for its specs which are the same as the moto g so pretty much as close to a s3.
Its hard to choose but I will give this one a try:

Yes saw this already.
btw. deleted this already,

.. not so smooth and screen was not so good, in the menues on the small display.
Flashed this now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1811325
which is coming closer to that what I´ve expected..
Although I´ve trouble with the non-functional home button, someone suggested here, to re-flash the ROM, but Cyanogen and Gapp separately.
Will try this now.
Also I am considering to try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096721
But not sure if there are any major bugs or something.
This is the 4.2.X you suggested. Can´t find 4.3.X though.
What is the difference between them?
Maybe you can suggest one specific rom.

i cant sugesst you a rom because i dont own the phone, i could look through the forums and show you one to test out but thats about it, 4.2.X and 4.3.X have just minor ui updates that can come in handy, just test a bunch of 4.1.X and 4.2.X and you can see the difference, i think 4.2.X added camera to the lockscreen and dropdown status bar different ui. you can check here to see some of the differences http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history
Can anybody link me to any? I see people in several posts referencing battery life and also temperature issues to be dependent on kernels and which one you chose, but I don't see any to choose lol. A popular one seems to be arde and a Google search doesn't bring anything relevant up. Is there a list of kernels somewhere? I think I'm starting to prefer stock actually. Is there some for stock and cm based?

Well I clearly stated that I Googled it. I wouldn't be posting this if I didn't. The only real relevant link appears to be the first one and it's in Spanish. Using Chrome to translate I still can't seem to make sense of an organize the links, nor do all of them work. Excuse me for thinking someone might have reorganized them somewhere in English.

Group 1 and Group 2 are for STOCK
CM and CM OC are for CM
Aren't most of them included in the ROMs? I've finally got it where I got CM12 not running that hot, at least to the touch anyway. The kernel auditor app still is showing numbers sorta high
I was under the thought that the ARDE kernels dont work with the newer type builds.
One other thing.....they are in .img formats. Isn't that for bootloaders and reocveries? Can you flash a kernel as an img file in twrp?

I used to use it way back in the day with Samsung phones lol. So you can flash a kernel IMG with it? Would that delete TWRP? Or do these kernels have TWRP ingrained or something? Last time last phone I was flashing kernels they were just Zips. That's what I'm used to, I'm just a little confused why they are boot IMG's on this phone.

LOT'S of differences in these Chinese phones vs the flagships. All in all, pretty solid phones, but better left with minimal modifying, as the hardware, software, and development just aren't on par. After trying 2 ROM's, with bad result, I am just going to stick with stock rooted, TWRP, and Xposed. You can already freeze/uninstall the little bloat there is, and because of no hardware method of booting into TWRP, risk vs gain just isn't worth it for me. Anyway, I don't think you will lose TWRP by flashing kernel. I'm not knocking any of the dev's......far from it! I just don't feel the need to spend so much time modifying what is such a small footprint (178 elements for me, vs 380 in touchwiz flagships!) for little, if any gain in battery or performance. Just one nerd's opinion.

I flashed the kernel, and when it rebooted, it stayed stuck at Alcatel screen. Wouldn't respond to adb/fastboot commands, finally decided to try to reflash/update using update software, but when I turned it off, as soon as I plugged it into PC, it would boot to Alcatel screen. So then I tried to put it in download mode, and after many tries, got it there, but update tool would fail at5%, saying device not recognized. Finally, some how trying to get into download mode, it booted into TWRP. Yay!.....or so I thought. I wiped and then restored, and when it booted, back to Alcatel screen. Managed to get it back to TWRP after several tries, and it turned out that something unmounted system. Wiped, restored, mounted, wiped cache and dalvic, put it in freezer, as the only time it gets hot is when I wipe caches.....takes about 5 minutes to update/reboot. Now all is good, but I'm going to stick with stock rooted, as even out of the box I never experienced any lag. I have even underclocked with ROM toolbox pro, 1344 for top cores, 960 for bottom, powersave governor. Still no lag! :good: I have Cricket 60450,btw. This really is a different animal than the EVO and Galaxy phones I have been using since 2010. I dont understand how you can have such wildly different variables with similar hardware....I have a ZTE Warp Elite with 2gb RAM, and when i clear junk/caches it gets down to 10-16% memory usage, and tops out at about 65%. The Idol will clear to mid 40% and quickly gets to low 80%. Is the difference that bad between 5.0.2, and 5.1.1? Anyway, if you get stuck like I did, just keep powering off, and rebooting with power, vol up, down, both, and you can get into TWRP. Wish I could say there was a specific order/procedure to get there, but it just seemed to be a case of repetition. Hope this can be of help if anyone gets stuck at splash for whatever reason, and can't get phone to respond with PC. Also, have any cricket users used the upgrade tool, and if so, did that SIM unlock? Don't know if that's a separate firmware/chip that controls SIM lock. So much for my rambling adventures, but hopefully if someone gets stuck they can use my experience to get into recovery.
I really just want recommendations for what should I be upgrading or switching to in terms of which recovery I should have installed and what is the latest version for my phone or whatever.
Can someone PLEASE tell me if what they think of any of the FEW custom roms available? I will take the first recommendation...lol. Maybe the best recommendation is to just use stock like I am because it's fine but I still want to do a refresh and get the latest and greatest updates since I am probably not receiving OTA updates
For a long time I had been REALLY hoping to install a custom ROM on this puppy but sadly, even though I love my Pixel 2 and having it rooted, noone seemed to care be making custom roms for her at the time. Development is/was slow it seems unless I am viewing it wrong. strange.
I find that really strange because I recall claims that google is ok with you rooting this phone and does not in fact break the warranty.
Anyways, yeah please any simple advice would be helpful to me as I am just a little out of the loop since I last updated my phone
I don't really understand the point or see the need for me to install a different kernel but can't someone please tell me what might be cool about doing so?
I just want my phone to have a try with a different ROM installed that might be sleeker or more efficient and customizable somehow, just to try it and see.
if you dont know why you need a different kernel then dont do it.
if you want a custom rom on your Pixel 2 for the COOL factor. dont do it.

I agree with the sentiment as far as the kernel is concerned, but disagree for custom roms. There are a lot of features on custom roms for other phones that are pretty cool, so his question makes sense. Personally, I used to flash custom roms on older devices, and I'd pick them based on what features I thought were "cool."
As for the OP, I've been running rooted stock on my Pixel 2 since day one, and I have no desire to try custom roms. There's nothing appealing to me, offered by custom roms, that I can't get on stock with Magisk Modules and other root apps, such as Substratum. As far as which recovery to use, just check out the TWRP thread, it'll have the most recent. If you want to update your stock rom, just download a factory image from Google and flash it. Just be sure to remove the -w from the .bat if you don't want it to wipe your device.
This is the first phone that I have not rooted since I got it. The process is very cumbersome and the phone seems to run really well stock. I used to like wise also be caught up with custom roms but now it's just nice having everything work although unfortunately root is much harder to get as well

It's just more cumbersome. I rooted my Pixel 1 and not having a dedicated recovery partition like the nexus did just made things a bigger pain in the ass than they needed to be. If I made changes, etc I had to always fastboot into TWRP then reflash. I think I just miss the way the nexus was. Right now I cannot use CDMA on the OnePlus, but if the merger happens with Sprint and T-Mobile and I can I'm going to consider it.

Same. I know lots of people say "just flash twrp after each monthly update" etc but the reality is why make something more complicated than it needs to/used to be. For the Pixel 2 it seems every TWRP update is a "I'm going to make a backup image of my phone and cross my fingers it works when I need it" feeling. I don't personally enjoy that so like you I'm sticking with stock on the P2 for now.

I have not tried to make a back up since the Pixel 1. I'm sure things have improved however before when I first had the Pixel 1 and tried to make a backup I had issues and never tried again. Also the updating process, I would just flash the new boot.img and system, when I tried it with the pixel 1 it kept erasing despite removing the w- flag.
The Pixel 2 works well enough plus it's my daily driver and the process has just become cumbersome esp with work and others things I am doing. Probably at some point I may look at it again, and I have CDMA, but if I want to really run with that stuff I'd probably just get a OnePlus which is oriented more towards modding.
Plus more and more apps are not working with root and while you can get around that with magisk it's a cat and mouse game constantly. I don't even know how to do it anymore but I remember last year you had to flash this, then that, etc, etc in a certain sequence, then if it didn't work you start all over etc etc.....It's just a hassle.
