[Q] Xoom is not seeing my microsd card AS a microsdcard - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All right, so i recently purchased a wi-fi only xoom from a friend of mine and i'm having a bit of trouble getting it to read my microsd card properly. He had rooted the device previously and immediately lost microsd support.
I recently flashed Team Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.2.1 - Moray and figured that would fix the problem. Of course, it didn't. So I downloaded Androzip and through a bit of digging have come to the conclusion that my microsd card (according to androzip) is not my sd card at all. It is, in fact a folder named "sdcard" within the Xoom's internal memory. According to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254933 my sd card should be in mnt/external1
Only problem is it isn't showing up.
When i go into settings/storage it shows my 8 gig card, i just can't seem to do anything with it. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Where to begin...?
Yes, tablets generally use non-removable flash memory for internal storage (hence your internal "sdcard") and additionally, the Xoom has a slot for up to a 32GB external micro sdcard, which should be found (if installed) at mnt/external1, on the same directory level as sdcard.
If you are rooted you should have the ability, through a root app like Root Explorer, to navigate right to mnt/external1. You can mount R/W access and write to the micro sdcard. If you have installed a custom rom/kernel that supports usb host mode, you can also use a usbOTG cable with an app like Drive Mount or USB OTG Watcher and access a thumb drive or a large HDD.

I really appreciate the response.
Root Explorer is the only one of those suggestions that I'm familiar with...could you possibly link me to a guide or maybe give, me an idea of how to get that accomplished?

I assume you are still trying to gain access to your micro sdcard (we can get to usb host mode later).
If you have downloaded Root Explorer, open it and it should say that superuser granted root permission, then you want to navigate to the root directory, find mnt, find external1 and you should find your files there. In the top left corner of the screen you should see "Mounted as r/o and Mount R/W" and you can choose the latter and then you should be able to copy and paste to and from your micro sdcard.

That's fantastic.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help.

Anytime, I'm happy to help.

I figured this was kind of up the same alley that my co worker is experiencing. He recently got his xoom back from motorola and I got some information from him that might be helpful to my situation.
cdma_n_03.1a.5p ltedc_u_05.19.00
android 3.2.2
build: hlk75d
The xoom is not showing any external sd card, he is using astro file manager. He is not rooting the unit, he is going to keep it pretty much factory fresh, as he wants to use it's tools for display and selling. so I'm attempting to give him as much help as I can.
I'd like to give my buddy some good info to help him out, I think he's gonna have to, and probably should just call verizon and explain his problem, but I hope I might be able to help him out. Thanks and if any other information is needed, please ask, I can get it for assistance.

Since I don't have a stock, unrooted 4G upgraded Xoom to play with it's a bit hard to give guidance on this. I can only say that with the HC3.2 update, external sdcard support came to the stock OS, so it should be there at mnt/external1 (I think) and this should be on the same directory level as the internal sdcard (internal storage with all the app, etc). If he's not rooted, he won't be able to use apps that have root permissions, which will limit how deep into the file system he can go. But the micro sdcard should be there.
Maybe his best bet is to try to talk to support at Verizon...see what they say.I'm curious to know....

Thanks for the reply. i believe he is here in the office now and Ill have him check and reply shortly.

Try installing "Disk Usage" from the market. It will list the current storage devices on your tablet. That's how I found where my sdcard was mounted.

The disk usage app worked. Picked it right up. Thanks button pressed. Have a happy Monday.

Had xoom for a month. NOT ROOTED! Actually don't know how to do it or what the benefits are! I need to be able to access my flash drives & external hard drives. Drive mount states that I must be rooted! Is there anything out there I can use that doesn't require my to be rooted? Using Honeycomb 3.2.

[Q] *THE* stupidest question ever posted to XDA

Okay...maybe it's not the stupidest question, but it's gonna be right up there.
I bought an Aria today. Let it be know that I've had HTC phones for 5 years and was very active in Windows Mobile ROM development. I'm not daft. But I feel like I've been dropped into the middle of Bangkok with Android, so please forgive me.
I've rooted and have Clockwork installed. I'm attempting to install ATTN1's Liberated Aria (Eclair) ROM.
And here's the stupid question:
How the FORK do I copy the downloaded ZIP file to my SD card?
I know, I know...it's stupid. But I can't seem to find it anywhere. My phone has USB debugging turned on. It's running in Disk Drive mode. But when I navigate to it, there's no folder for the SD card, no hint of the SD card anywhere. What am I supposed to do? Go buy one of those adapters so I can stick this microSD card into my card reader and THEN copy it?
If anyone feels like convincing me of exactly how idiotic I am, I'm ALL EARS!

So I'm just guessing that this is what you're confused about. I apologize if I'm telling you what you already know.
When you put the phone in disk drive mode, the folder that comes up for the disk drive IS the SD card. Disk drive mode is the same as taking the SD card out and putting it in your computer, just without the hassle. You can't access the internal memory through this method.
I'm no expert either, but doesn't it download to downloads folder in the sdcard. You could use something like astro to check the folders. Or are you trying to copy it from pc? Try downloading on the phone.

Hmmmm... I suppose it would make sense that the drive I see on my laptop as the phone is actually the SD card. And when I went into Recovery to install the ROM, I did see an option to install SDcard/update.zip. However, I don't think that was the ROM because I still got the AT&T animations. So I guess I'm back to square one. I'll attempt to download the file directly on the phone....
Perhaps...just perhaps...I have succeeded! I had to download from the browser on the phone. Copying from my laptop to the SD card did not work. (Or, at least it did not provide me with the option to install the zip file from the SD card until I had downloaded the file directly onto the phone using its browser.)
If you use the option to install update.zip, keep in mind that your rom must actually be named 'update.zip.' Once you put the rom on your SD card, you should have selected the option that allows you to choose the zip file you want to flash. Just for future reference.

Ha Ha! Now you know what it like to be a noob. Sometimes things are so obvious and routine to us that we forget that it can be confusing to others just starting out. You have to be patient and sensitive to peoples questions.

How do I mount SD card as R/W in 3.2?

I just received a replacement Xoom from Moto and its on 3.2. I put a 8GB Sandisk and want to delete files on the SD but I can't. It's mounted as Read Only. What can I do?
root! Can't do it, yet, with stock 3.2.
Stick the card in your laptop and delete the files.
if you're prepared to root there is a solution here in the Xoom Android Devel thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068999
Root it, use this program to remount as read/write and then use whatever file manager you prefer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1173195
I figured I'd have to root it but I was wondering if there was a solution on stock. I'm going to root it hopefully today if I have time.
That sucks. I'm going to just stick in my Evo for now and delete files. It's kind of a pain and dumb that they didn't include it in stock.
Mine is root 3.2 3g. I coonect my xoom to windows 7 pro and able to detect my sd card but unable to put any file there. Any help much appreaciated.

This was told to developers at Google IO in 2011. There's a different API for R/W now to the external file system and developers just aren't using it yet.
The proper fix is for developers to change their apps to support the new API.

[Q] Problems about Tiamat Room 2.2.1

Although most friends here said Tiamat 2.2.1 is perfet, I really have some problems with it. Pls help me out !!!!!

2. When connected with PC through USB, PC also could not write to MicroSD, even use MicroSD mount.
3. OTG device could not be mounted automatically. I have to mount them with Drice Mount everytime by hand. And it is not mount at the folder USBOTG as mentioned by Tiamat.
4.Gmail always FC whenever adding attachments.
Pls help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I'll start with number 1: Tablets are not created like phones and Honeycomb is not Froyo or Gingerbread. By that I mean that in HC, apps are not meant to be running from the external micro sdcard...why do you think we have 32GB of internal storage?
Titanium Backup can be pointed to the external sdcard so you can protect your backups in case you need to wipe everything, and of course solarnz CWM recovery saves the nandroids on the external micro sd (unless you choose a different location), and I think some games that use and save a lot of data can also be pointed to the micro sdcard, but you can't run apps from it. I don't know if that answered your question or not.
For the other items I'd like to suggest you visit the Officially unofficial Moray Rom Thread, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287720
Good luck.
Thx very much friend!
But to me, access to write to microsd seems important.
For example, when i use an app to open a book in microsd, without access to write, the app could not even create a book mark in the directory.
Is there any ways to solve that?

If you have loaded a book on micro sdcard, what app are you using to read/annotate it? That app needs to be in the Xoom internal storage, but if the app can access books on the micro sdcard, you're fine. If you are just somehow accessing the book (as a pdf or other format) without using a specific app, I'm not sure how you'd mark it up. If I'm not understanding you, please explain more.

[Q] Need help with sd card not mounting

Hi. I want to thank all of the developers for making my xoom still relevant and much better.
I do however need some serious help, as my xoom is pretty much useless at the moment. Yesterday, I flashed the alpha version of 4.2 from the xoom android development section on my everest xoom 3g. Since then, I have not been able to mount sd card. It appears on my laptop and in storage on the device.
I have flashed 3 different recvoeries in the hopes that one would mount my sd car, but all have failed. I just need to be to mount the sd card in order to flash a new rom.
I am not sure what the problem is.
I really hope someone can help me.

[Q] Micro and SD Card File Locations

Hi everyone,
I just got a TF300T for myself for Christmas, and I love it so far. This is my first time posting about it, and first post on XDA.
I'm trying to figure out where the micro SD card (that you can put in the tablet itself) and the SD card (that you can put in the dock) are located in the file structure. When I use File Manager or Root Explorer Lite, it shows "sdcard" as the internal memory, but I can't figure out where the cards are located. I tried looking at the different options under "storage," but didn't know if that was it or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Nate

they are in /Removable folder.
as this its not the standard android location for sd a lot of apps cant find them - dunno why Asus did this.
Looks like instead of calling it /removable they do call it /storage. Through trial and error I figured this out:
/storage/sdcard0 is the internal storage.
/storage/sdcard1 is the microSD storage in the tablet.
/storage/sdcard2 is the SD storage in the keyboard dock.
Thanks for the reply, you got me thinking and pointed in the right direction!
