[Q] windows 98/xp on optimus 2x (p990) - General Questions and Answers

Hello.
Is there any way i can get win 98 or win xp to run as a "emulator/simulator" on my phone?
Witch installs or runs from my internal or external flash drive?
and uses the phone's wifi as internet connection?

If you have Android SDK installed on your PC or flash drive, you can use PDANet to tether your internet for free! its amazing to use and easy to set up!

Pretty sure that was completely unhelpful to the OP.....just sayin.
Now, back on topic. I'm no expert, but I don't think there is a DOS/Windows emulator for android. Might be worth searching the net for however.

Any linux (ubuntu) users with success?

Hi again guys!
Ever since the ATT update usb connecting to the phone in ubuntu is sporadic and unreliable. I can usually get my photos off of it. Sometime I can even get into a non-root basic filesystem as well
However this isn't my main problem. I want to root the phone and install custom ROM's etc... Tried the VMware and a version of windows and installed the samsung drivers to XP but have trouble (again) with the usb and VMware.
Any help would be appreciated.
Additionally I'm pretty pissed off about the update thing. I don't care about tethering per se but that underhanded **** is why I dumped microsoft in the first place. I'll dump ATT too and spend my money elsewhere.

Linux user here. I haven't had the problems you describe. I have lately been using ES File Explorer to copy to and from a shared folder on my desktop. avoiding the USB for file transfers all together. when I do connect via USB I usually use ' adb push' and 'adb pull' to move files around.
To Root your phone there is an 'update.zip' method that I used (no computer needed)
There is also a tool called ClockworkMod Recovery that you can use to install custom rom's and create nandroid backups. (no computer needed)
And finally if you manage to screw up and can not boot, you can use Heimdall on linux like you would use Odin on Windows.
enjoy your phone...
-p
Thank-you so much!!!
I was thinking about exactly what you wrote. Why not do it the linux way? Admittedly my skills are weak.
Had a little trouble with the update.zip but went to the wiki (again) and the info on how to do it from the phone was there. BTW the wiki has improved since last week.
Rooted phone and installed Titanium Backup and Clockwork Recovery. In my excitement I deleted all the ATT bloatware before backing them up and the ROM. Oh well... Too bad.
Now I just feel great about my phone. Needs some customization but no hurry. Only thing was that TB prompted me to go to settings/applications/ and tick "unknown sources". Doesn't exist.
Thanks again! If you have anymore nuggets of info...?
linux newb here but i try
edit:
the phone can mount to a vm in dowload mode for use with odin or in kies mtp mode as long as debugging is off, otherwise it likes to mount to the host pc as a drive, i dont know a work around but you can make the phone a shared folder with the vm client so you can see the files in the vm, it'll be seen as a network location in that case.
it can mount as a drive in linux but you need to select to mount from the phone. i was having problems with it in eclair in windows and didnt try it in linux but froyo is working great. in eclair it may help to try with debugging on then you can mount from the notification bar.

To enable side loading(unknown sources). I used method 5 from this post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376
and here is a link to my comments on the method later in the thread regarding some punctuation corrections.
This method uses adb from the SDK to pull the settings.db file off and edit it using sqlite3 before pushing it back on.
I believe you can edit the file directly on your phone once you have root and install a terminal app from the marketplace.
The above forum post is also in the wiki you referenced previously. basically you want to look for methods to "enable side loading"
-p
I'm using Ubuntu and have had no problems. Rooted and removed market restrictions without a hitch.
In progress upgrading to 10.10 64bit. Will see, but right now my machine sees my phone but it won't mount. Though I haven't tried to force it.

On the phone I leave my usb settings set to ask on connection. And then chose 'mass storage' when it asks. It then mounts /sdcard as an external drive. (make sure you haven't left usb debuging on)

Oh I've tried it all-wichaways! That hasn't worked either. The card(s) are seen but no longer mount like they used to. When I choose media player I get this message on the phone: PC connection only available in idle screen. Close all running applications. I think something may be corrupted on the phone.
Before I start flashing anything I'm going to give 10.10 a go. Ubuntu specifies that 10.10 plays nice with Android. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble with my startup disks and have wasted three of them on three different downloads. Won't fully boot. Unfortunately, I've had this experience before with other releases, and it almost always was something being wrong with the .iso that was downloaded. Even tried a usb startup and same experience.
Woes. PITA!

Make sure you burn your disks at a slow speed. Like 4x. Also try downloading over a stable wired connection. Use the md5 tool to check your download and your burn. If you can figure out when it is getting corrupt you have a fighting chance.
Reporting back. Finally got 10.10 to boot from a usb flashdrive by disabling the BootParameters. I guess 10.10 is so cutting edge my 2.5 yo toshiba can't boot it easily.
Reinstalled 10.04 without a hitch and since I didn't format my /home still kept everything. But I tried connecting by usb before any updates. No worky. And not after the 256M of updates either.
It's the phone I'm sure. Not really keen on flashing the ROM yet just to fix this. Recollection is that Samsung didn't put a good effort into this part of the phone. But I think again..
Why not eschew the usb for file transfers? I've got Bluetooth and wifi right here. Who needs clunky old usb? Adhoc network?
Ideas? Wifi would be easiest since my laptop doesn't have Bluetooth.

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I use an app called ES File Explorer (free in the market) to navagate to a shared folder on my desktop.
My (samba) shared folder has no restrictions and works well. Only issue is I have to fix ownership and permissions on things copied over to the computer from the phone. If you choose to password protect yours let me know how that works out for you.

OK thanks. I'm going to investigate this. I take it ESFE works over the 3g connection as long as the host (my laptop) is connected to the internet?

It supports FTP for sure. I'm no security expert but I doubt its a good idea to share a samba share over the internet.
If you want remote access to you desktop there are secure methods for that. The method I would choose would depend on my desire/need for a remote connection.
If I just want to access my shared folder I would probably set up a VPN connection and then use ES FileExplorer.
To fully control the computer, use VNC or other "remote desktop" application.
Been reading up on Samba. It is the linux way lol. Also, I went and got a Bluetooth micro-adapter. Installed drivers from the repository.
Transferred some pics and music back and forth. All GUI based. Worked first time. I'm still this side of the learning curve but my base needs are met.
The Bluetooth works great but I'd like to learn a bit more about the wifi. Seems to me one should be able to move files with a VPN via the wireless adapters and no router. I just lack the knowledge and skill to do it.
But thanks for reminding me about the ES FileExplorer! As far as the permissions in Ubuntu for the shared folder I just checked the box under right-click- sharing options allow others to create and delete files from this folder. I think that works.

Android Development Laptop...ideas, opinions and suggestions wanted.

Got a free laptop, need some insight on software. It's a Dell Inspiron 1526 running Vista (ugh). It needs to go on a diet. Here's a list of programs I use on my PC, that I want to use on the laptop.
Google Chrome
BitLord
7-Zip
Paint.net
AndroidSDK
Eclipse 3.7
Apk Manager
Notepad++
Adobe Reader
Windows Media Player (I know there's better, I use it because it's there...and only for music)
Nissan FAST 2001
(probably others as well)
Nissan FAST is a automotive program for part numbers and diagrams. My issue is it's 16bit. It runs on Windows 7 64 bit and XP 32 bit, but it won't run on Vista.
I need FAST to work and I don't like all Vista's bloat so a new OS is in order. 7 or XP was my original thought but I'm starting to use my PC more for messing with Android stuff, so maybe I can use my laptop for that instead of having to sit in front of my PC to get anything done.
It seems Ubuntu and Mint are the preferred Linux distros of Android devs.
So, what would you do?
Upgrade to 7?
Downgrade to XP?
Ubuntu/XP dual boot?
Ubuntu/7 dual boot?
Mint/XP dual boot?
Mint/7 dual boot?
There has to be a way around running dual boot just for FAST. Some Google time has shown that most of the others has Linux equivalents...Chromium, U7-Zip, The Gimp, Amarok, etc...
Thanks in advance and if this is the wrong forum, please feel free to place it elsewhere, Thanks!
I'm in the same boat minus the OS issue and the free part. I am buying a sony vaio. For watching movies with the girlfriend and theming/coding for android.
Still haven't decided whether or not I'll go with blackbuntu as my secondary OS.
Edit: I can suggest a Win7/ubuntu install as that is basically what I am going to be doing. Blackbuntu is just a hacker based distro and I use that to pen-test my network from time to time. lol
FAST is the deal-breaker...and a lean mean OS....I'm on the laptop now....Vista is definitely the fat angry sister of the Windows family...it makes me miss ME lol
Have you considered a VM player?
Run your preferred OS as your primary OS. Get VMWare Player (Free) and install it with your required OS for that NISSAN FAST application.
ubuntu/win 7 is the best, because we need a windows platform, but linux too. you install only teh essential programs, because the work will be fast and clear

pretty much sums it up. windows 7 is gonna be the easiest os to just have work aand have all your programs and things in (plus it doesn't suck like vista), but it is also a good practice to keep Ubuntu installed for if you want to develop, fix windows, whatever you might need it for.
For the record I much prefer IntelliJ to eclipse, it feels a lot better and pretty much writes my code with all its shortcuts. works great on win7.

IntelliJ...I'll check it out.
So, if I'm gonna run Windows 7....is dev really that much better in Ubuntu?
Dumb question....will my Disk from my PC install Windows 7 on the Laptop?
Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate gives you access to Windows Virtual PC and XP mode, so you effectively get an XP VM with it anyway, plus you can make your own. I use it for Gazillionaire Deluxe

[Q] Emulating my android mobile screen on Windows 7

'day everyone!
i have a dell xcd35 (aka zte blade gen 2) with android 2.2, stock rom.
the phone is rooted, and now has clockwordmod rom manager installed on it.
i previously used to own a windows mobile, and had an emulator software running on my windows 7 laptop. this s/w could emulate the screen from the windows mobile in real time on my laptop (with a manageable amount of lag).
i have the android sdk installed (cannot live without the adb shell, since i am a bit of a linux junkie), but i have been trying hard to negotiate a similar real time emulation of my dell xcd 35 phone onto my laptop.
has anyone managed to do it?
cheers!
roxio
Edit 1:
i have tried the webkey app. this app is not for me. the app routes your data through a webservice over a public (most probably secure) link, and is terribly slow. its a great app if you want to share your phone with someone remotely, but not good enough for continuous use through USB. also, it eats into your 3G network usage.
another try:
playing around with the emulator.exe in the android sdk.
i tried setting up a virtual device (avd). but not sure if this option can be used for emulating a phone screen, real time, on the laptop.

HTC One S/IMac

Looking for some advice on using this IMac
http://www.everymac.com/systems/app...20-inch-aluminum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
with the One S/S4
I know nothing about Apple stuff, but my laptop is about shot and my son may give me his old IMac above. May be temporary or permanent, not sure. I have hboot below .13, so don't need to do much other than copy my sdcard files back and forth. Haven't used adb/fastboot for awhile. Know I need to get drivers reinstalled and believe I can use adb/fastboot with it. I assume same SDK I have (R15 I believe), which I could copy from an Acronis BackUp to IMac--maybe? Just need to use different linux commands. He is Apple thru and thru--and a Software Engineer, so learning to use adb/fastboot with IMac may not be a big deal.
I have seen Apple users here and on my old N1 forums post for help on command lines, so assume this may be only issue--??
Just curious on any tips/pros/cons on doing this, as he is in opposite end of state and no need to bring it all that way when they come down for Christmas, if the IMacs are more difficult to work with on this phone.
Thanks for any advice--
Ken
it doesnt really matter whether you're using mac or windows, if you're trying to run adb.
i used mac and adb, and its great. =)
What about dual-booting Windows on it?
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
You can write/build android apps on the mac, but building kernels and especially android itself, I would use ubuntu in a virtual box.
If it is not maxed out on RAM (8G probably?) I would do that. It's not expensive and will help a lot when running a VM.
(I live in a macbook pro.)

The only reason to run windows would be to run a RUU.
You can download adb and fastboot for mac, and you will never have 'wrong drivers'.
Appreciate all responses--been reading and found the imac adb/fastboot files and sdk if i want it.
Did see commands for basic stuff not really different.
Thought about dual booting, not sure if i have a windows copy of my current OS--Vista. Could restore my whole acronis backup to it on that partition i make. Got the latest Acronis that says it can restore to any hard drive--maybe will test that--
I am interested to try the imac as my phone is not connecting well thru usb and would like to see if it is the laptop--

Don't think that would be a good idea best off doing a fresh install.

Good luck. Windows 7 not being too bad with change I think it have a better chance of working if the PC its from was Intel too. I have gone from Core Duo setup to a i5 setup without a format.
Like everyone been saying, you be fine. I have a macbook pro.. and use vmware fusion to do all my windows base apps.. but I've used virtualbox as well.. both do the job.. it is a little different but I think you will be fine.. Just make sure you have lots of ram on the iMac if your going to do a lot of windows apps.. since I use vmware fusion I use unity mode.. makes it look like i'm running windows apps on native osx.. its just windows os is "minimized" .. Have fun..
OK guys thanks--I will have my son bring it down for Christmas and give it a go. IMac for free=no brainer anyway--
[Cruzer] it has 2gb ram, what I have now--
I am not totally computer illiterate and son is pretty good--so i think this will work out fine for now. My space is limited so really need a laptop, but will see how this goes for now. Just had a 3800.00 transmission rebuild bill. So funds limited for a new laptop. Especially for one that I really want.
Appreciate all the inputs--will post how it goes--

i strongly suggest not to make it a dualboot.
mac runs on darwin which kinda a unix like based operating system.
if your goal is only using adb, you can just download the android-sdk.
they include an adb.
then use terminal to run adb.
terminal application is in your utilities applications.
its going to be a purely in command-line.
for example:
i downloaded android-sdk to my workspace in Documents folder.
adb is in platform-tools folder in the android-sdk.
run the adb command, it will shows the helps you need.
### copy paste from my terminal ###
ditto:~ ahartowo$ Documents/workspace/android-sdk/platform-tools/adb
Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.29
-d - directs command to the only connected USB device

-e - directs command to the only running emulator.

-s <serial number> - directs command to the USB device or emulator with

appreciate the input, probably won't dual boot--would like to try just the Imac OS, and go from there--

ok so i got sdk setup and put virtuous rom back on phone for htc options
downloaded htc sync, which i thought would have drivers

did some googling for just the drivers, no luck
did i miss something simple
windows just comes up and starts to look for drivers when phone plugged in--
i don't care to actually sync anything just access sdcard

Can't think of the name of it but the SD is done a different way in that rom so it not mass storage any more so maybe that way don't work on mac.

yeah it has some networking choices, not the original htc sync choice

Is possible, to install and use free apps (.xap,...) in airplane mode, on lumia 1020?

I mean when I am completely offline (like android phones). Or at least using reverse tethering. Is reverse tethering possible to lumia 1020?
P.s. My question is specific. I know about wifi or bluetooth, which I don't trust. Using my pc I feel more safe.
Thanks
:cyclops:
You can deploy XAP files using a PC using USB cable. On Win 10 Mobile, you can install APPX using file explorer just like APK on Android or you can also use Device Portal (similar to reverse tethering).
Thank you

I did loads of research and I never stumbled upon Device Portal. Obviously you are ... (somebody) and thank you...
Unfortunately my phone runs Windows 8.1 and my laptop Windows XP. Is there something out there for me, to marry my two devices offline? I also want to downgrade to Windows 8 but probably there is not a user friedly and safe way (fa fu bee ga ).

You're very welcome.
You can deploy apps from XAP files on WP8.1 but unfortunately not for XP. I understand that the deployment tools is from Visual Studio 2015 which requires Win 7 or higher. I've seen some sites extracts the deployment tool as a standalone app so you don't have to install visual studio. You can attempt to deploy XAP file this way. But I have no idea if it will work.
