It's laid out for you there actually. Granted it's a tad cryptic but:
-bootanimation.zip--->system/customize/resource or data/local depending on rom.
Basically, download the boot animation you want (has to be a zip file) and rename it to bootanimation.zip if it isn't already renamed. Plug in your phone and move the bootanimation.zip file you want over to your SD card. After you confirmed that your bootanimation.zip file is on your SD card, then unmount/remove the phone from your computer.
Then the easiest way is to use an app called root explorer where you can copy and paste files onto your phone. In your case depends on your rom but generally located on /system/customize/resource. Just use root explorer to see if the bootanimation.zip is located there and if it is,you can simply rename the file (ie bootanimation1bkup.zip) to have it as a back up if you want to revert back. Go to root explorer, copy the bootanimation.zip file and head over to where you found your 'old' bootanimation file and before hitting paste, make sure you click the r/o button so that it reads r/w. Then paste the file. Go back and tick the r/w button again and you can exit the phone. That should do it.
Did I forget anything?

Hello
I have a nexus one rooted with cm.6.00. Is there a way to change the boot animation? If so how can it he done and what is needed to do it?
Thanks in advance

I'm on the Droid, so not sure if it's the same... but I think it should be pretty similar.
The way I changed my bootup animation thingy, is downloaded the bootup from... some site. Can never remember the name of it. Mounted my Droid to the PC and moved the zip file to the root of the SD Card. Make sure it's named bootanimation.zip (not .zip.zip). Then use a root explorer application, and place it in the system/media folder. Overwrite the old one. I also replace the one in data/local. Not sure if it matters or not... but I do.
So that's what I did for mine. I have the aweseome Mario animation one. I love it.
Hope this helps.
Any chance you can give me a website link?

Having trouble getting this to work on Dell Streak. bootanimation.zip is read only and I can't seem to change permissions on the file. ???
Update++ Disregard. I installed a proper file editor with the ability to overwrite files (Super Manager) and presto. . . new animations!
bdh
Want to change your boot animation, but dont wanna mess with ADB?
Download the desired bootanimation.zip
Put on root of SD.
Rename chosen boot animation to bootanimation.zip
Open up Root Explorer, navigate to root of SD long press the bootanimation.zip file, and select move
Navigate to /system/customize/resource
Click Mount R/W
Click paste, and overwrite the existing file.
Reboot.
**NOTE: you may want to back up the existing boot animation first, in case you dont dig the new one**
I can only verify that this will work with the HTC EVO. Im not responsible if you accidentally mess up your phone.
The directories may not be the same for every rom...
How do I get this to work on the CMod7 RC2, I go to file manager system/media and I see the bootanimation.zip file but it wont let me delete or move it...Any ideas?
The built in file manager for cm7 does not mount the system partitions as R/W which is required. I actually have not found a single file manager that *CAN* mount cm7 system partitions as R/W.
I tried Root File Explorer, ES File Explorer and Root System Explorer. All 3 crash the phone when attempting to mount the system as R/W
I used Root Explorer running CM7 Rc2 on my EVO to change my boot animation and it we worked fine.

Simple as that.
Goes for HTC EVO 3D too, as well as any 540×960 android phone.
Animation ported from "Google齿轮" MIUI theme.
Make it:
/system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip, or
/system/customize/resource/TMOUS_bootanimation.zip, if you have a T-Mobile Sensation, or
/system/customize/resource/VF_bootanimation.zip, if you have a Vodafone Sensation.
nice one.... thanks
Thanks a lot for this.
Just renamed the current bootanimation.zip file, copied this one into its place, rebooted and it's working fine.
Cheers!
Seems i can't copy the zip file to the system folder.
Got an error about "read only"!
What am i doing wrong?
(sorry about bad english, i'm dutch!)

Tried to Google it but couldn't find it.
Ps. Using ASTRO to copy the files.

Use es file explorer from market (better than astro imho). Put on root option and mount system as writable. Then you can rename original bootanimation.zip and place new as bootanimation.zip. if you don't like new one, delete bootanimation.zip and rename original to bootanimation.zip

Thanks for the info m_speksnijder, with ES Explorer it works!
New bootscreen looks great!
I think I am going mad I have flashed 4.1.7 and cant seem to find where to put the boot amimation? I thought I would have to replace one that is already there? sorry if a stupid question but if you can help it would be great

Using ES file explorer. Put on root? Do you mean root your device? If that case, I am rooted, and all that.
But I can't find System folder :S
Open ES, hit menu button, scroll down to "root options" section, turn on both options (root explorer and mount file system), exit menu, klik on the blue star on the left in de topbar and click on the "phone" icon. Then navigate to "system/customize/resource" or "data/local" (depends on the rom your using). than follow my earlier post. If you're done, turn of the option "mount file system" just to be sure you do not delete anything when scrolling around in your system partitions.

And what happens if I accedentaly delete something when scrolling down?
Thanks works like a charm. I change permissions just in case.

Where is my boot animation located on my SD card?
Help appreciated!
It is under /system/media/bootanimation.zip
You won't find it on your SDcard. You'll need an app like Root Explorer to access the file system.
You could also use ADB to push the files there if you're familiar with ADB.
dont have that.. i replace the ones in Bamf_Extras.. but it didnt work
Are you familiar with ADB?
honestly, no. I one click rooted. what can I do?
can i push using clockwork recovery?

I believe there is a free alternative to Root Explorer in Super Manager. It contains File Explorer (Root). It may allow you to copy the bootanimation.zip and mp3 file into the directory. I also am unsure if it will let you set the correct permissions on the files once they are copied. It may be something you can try.
---------- Post added at 06:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:32 PM ----------
I went ahead and installed Super Manager. It will allow you to do what you need. You'll find the permissions button on the bottom menu bar if you scroll to the right.
You dont need any apps to do it for you, the bootanimation is in system/customize/resource folder you name it the name as the one in the folder and copy over it. Most if not all the developers name it bootanimation.zip the default Verizon is named VZW_bootanimation.zip I have helped people add sound to their boot animations as well this can be edited in the system/customize/CID folder in the file default. Must be edited with notepad++ or wordpad++ its one of those look near the bottom of the file for boot animation. I have become quite good at doing this by breaking it and fixing it. Things like this need to be learned the hard way.

The correct file path is for BAMF Forever 1.0.6 is system/media/bootanimation.zip
There is also an audio file that you can replace in the same location.
I edited my CID file so it where I want it to be. I am used to default setting. Also you can copy over audio but you still need to change desc file and CID so it starts with correct animation. Should I roll my eyes back? Plus I never even said anything about BAMF forever....

I assumed you were attempting to address the original posters questions about changing his boot animation on BAMF Forever 1.0.6. I didn't understand that you were merely randomly posting about how you like to edit this and that. You can roll your eyes back now!
I saw a cool transformers one. I want a cool one like Spiderman or something instead of my HTC boot animations. Do I just flash it from recovery?

I was a noob once
Someone has already beaten me to to the punch. Lol. And since that is already done, there's no point in wasting more precious XDA space. It completely depends on the ROM you're using. I'm using OrDroid. And the bootanimation is placed in the /system/customize/resource/ folder with the name "hTC_bootup_sensation.zip" All I do is find another boot animation made for the Sensation or it's resolution, and replace it using ES File Explorer with the root access and "mount System as rw" options checked. This location is different for ARHD. I think it's in /system/media. Browse around and locate this file first. Then the rest is easy. Hope I helped!

I'm also on ordroid and I found the location of my current boot animation and I downloaded a cool skrillex boot animation but it keeps saying animation can not be moved when I try to move it.

you have to change the permissions on the folder the original bootanimation file is on to read/write. By default the directory is set to have only read permissions

You can also make your own boot animations ax it is fairly simple to put the animations together. The only real hard part is making your pictures and scaling them to the right scale. Here is a tool to make them with if you do not want to write the text file your self. But like I said it is not hard. P m me if you want some further details.
