[Q] help with spontaneously unrecognized SIM card - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I'm going to give you guys the whole background story just to cover all the bases.
I've had a Nexus S for about 6 months, never had a hitch. Rooted it, etc etc all fine and dandy.
About two weeks ago, I updated it to CM 7.1 RC1. So far so good.
I've always had the same Vodafone SIM card, which has accompanied me through a couple of phones. Last week, I went to London and bought a UK pay as you go card, to use data without roaming. Perfect. No problems whatsoever.
So, to make it clear, I never had problems with my original (portuguese) SIM card, nor with the british one I had just bought.
However, it was upon my return that I realized I had forgotten my SIM card at my friend's house. I quickly stopped by the Vodafone store at the airport, where they promptly gave me a new SIM, ready to use within a couple of hours.
Since then, my phone after a short period of being on, spontaneously fails to detect the SIM card/no longer recognizes it. I've tried scanning for networks in the settings, but it won't let me register again. It takes a reboot to get it working. Thing is after a couple of minutes or hours, it happens again.
I have since exchanged the new SIM card with a newer one , also from Vodafone, albeit a different store. Yet, the problem persists.
I didn't alter any settings between Portugal-UK-Portugal, so everything should be exactly the same. Does anyone know how to solve this or why this happens?
Faulty phone?
Faulty radio?
Faulty SIM cards?
ROM bug?
Any help is appreciated.

[Q] HTC G1 unlocked no reception

I got a used G1 almost a year ago, unlocked it so I could use it with AT&T and it had been working without any trouble until this past Sunday. I was running 1.6 for the longest time and never got around rooting it or installing mods. Suddenly, after I was on the phone for 2 hours, the G1 stopped receiving service. It was normal for the phone to drop service for a moment because of where I live, but after a couple seconds I usually get service again. I didn't.
I swapped out my SIM to an older phone and I was able to get service. So I figure it probably isn't a SIM card problem.
So I put the SIM back into the G1, browsed through the phone to see what was wrong and suddenly found that I had an "update all" button for the market. That's a feature only in 2.2, not in 1.6. I checked online to see if there were any updates to 1.6, but didn't find anything. I had no service, but a feature not in 1.6 on my phone.
After several hours of having no service, I decided to root my phone and install Cyanogen Mod 6. I thought maybe updating the phone might fix the problem. Hours later, I got CM6 up and running and used my brother's SIM to activate my Google account. It just so happened that when I was activating the phone, I had a small window of reception. After that, no service.
Monday I went to the AT&T store to see if they could help and my phone suddenly worked inside the store. I left it there for 15-30 minutes and service didn't drop, so I thought it was fixed. I left and just as I got home, my phone stopped working. So I drove back to the AT&T store to get a new SIM. Sad part is, my phone has service in the store. Again. I just don't get service anywhere else.
I got the new SIM, but I still didn't get service. My brother suggested that the antenna cable might be loose. So yesterday I went to pick up a screwdriver set that had the right size torx bits so I could open up the phone. The cables looked fine, but I pulled them out and plugged them back in. That didn't fix the problem. I still didn't have service.
Late last night, at the CS club at school, a guy with a G1 on T-Mobile put his SIM into my phone to see if it would work. After 5 minutes, my phone was able to connect. So I swapped my SIM back in, but no service. My G1 can see the networks. Right now, I can see AT&T under "Available Networks", but every time I try to connect, it says, "Unable to connect to this network at this time. Please try again later."
I'm using a spare phone right now, but I'd really love to have my G1 working again. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Same Problem
If it makes you feel any better.. 7 months later and I have the same issue. Been scouring the internet and XDA for hours without any resolution. Maybe AT&T is dumping IMEI #'s for devices not in their lineup? Older AT&T Sims seem to work though which is strange. Maybe this bump will get us some kind of response.

No SIM Card?

Sorry for the spam.
After I was finally able to get this phone working, it worked great for a few hours before losing all signal and telling me that it couldn't find a SIM card. Naturally, I was confused. (It dropped all service after 20 minutes earlier in the day, too. Airplane mode fixed that.)
(Phone is unlocked and rooted with Ace Tool Kit; I use T-Mobile.)
Now, when I put a clean AT&T SIM in there and reboot, it reads fine and has no problems fetching APN information. The T-Mobile SIM, on the other hand, does not fare as well anymore. I also tried another active T-Mobile SIM to no avail (works on BB; does not work on this phone).
I'm thinking that something is going on with the radio and it's tripping up the OS. Has anyone seen this before? Should I flash a new radio?
Thanks!
Try a layer or 2 of tape on the back of the sim card so it makes better contact.
It actually turns out that powering the phone off for about 15 minutes or so fixes this problem. I'm guessing there's a bug in the baseband that causes this.

sometimes have -- "No sim card" error

Hi, I have a skyrocket and for a while now I get "no sim card" error, even though there is a sim card.
Sometimes it will go a week without doing it, other times 4 times a day or more.
I am trying to figure out if it is hardware or software, the sim card works fine in my old phone.
So far I have did a factory reset, I have tried to go back to the original rogers software but it was giving me some sort of error, but installed slim bean, worked great for a couple of days... then the error popped up.
So now i am thinking it could be the sim card try, and maybe replace that, the parts will take a while to get (the cheap ones from hong kong) i did order it as it was $10... but it will take 5 weeks.
I am wondering if anyone has had this happen to them ?
If you searched you'd see that I posted a thread with the exact same scenario. Mine is a hardware problem that was not resolved with a new SIM Tray. Hopefully you have better luck than I did.

Suddenly no data access

I have had my oneplus for about 60 days. three days ago, when I was driving, I noticed my signal meter had an "exclamation point" next to it and I had no mobile data access. I messed around with it a bit and thought it was SIM card. I got a replacement today and no luck. New card, same issue. It occurs all over so it's not location dependent. I am getting ready to do a reinsall of OS in hopes it's that but I didn't know if anyone had any other suggestions?

Yup, I had the same thing. I'm TMO running global with no root. I rebooted my phone and corrected instantly. It's hadn't happened for a few days but I'm watching it. If it happens again I'll flash OS again.
I have rebooted, tried a new sim, factory reset, all the same. It also happens in another phone so it's clearly something on the provider side, not a hardware issue. I put another sim from a friend's phone in and it worked like normal. Now, it's the hassle of trying to get the provider to admit it's not my error.

Question Root related cell reception issues?

I purchased a used US version Rog Phone 5 recently through an online seller. When receiving the phone, I gave it a good once over and powered it on and tested wifi and such and everything seemed to be in good working order. I then rooted the phone and set most of stuff up. After inserting my sim card, I noticed the cell reception was not that great. I suffered through for a couple of days but was missing calls and texts like crazy. I was constantly dropping reception entirely in areas where I have very good signal with other phones. The phone is essentially useless now. I tried several factory resets, flashed back to the non-rooted boot image, and then flashed to an older firmware with no improvements to signal. I can't imagine the reception issue is in any way related to the rooting process, but I'm throwing this out there just in case anyone has seen anything similar in the past.
A few things to note:
I am on AT&T
The APN is definitively configured correctly
I could have returned the phone to the online seller for a refund prior to unlocking the bootloader, but did not insert a sim before rooting, so I have no idea whether the issue was present from purchase or not. Lesson learned, I suppose... do a more thoroughly inspection before doing anything that will void a warranty or refund agreement.
I have tried the same sim in two other phones with no issues.
Everything else about the phone seems to work perfectly, only poor reception.
I had the phone up to approximately 30 miles from my house with no change, so it isn't limited to a specific tower.
Does anyone have any ideas? If I don't come up with anything I will be posting it on ebay as "not working - for parts only" so I will try about anything at this point.
Sim recognition issue
Owned the phone for about a month now. Phone was working perfectly fine for the majority of this time. I use 2 different sims and they were both working smoothly until recently. A few days ago, I woke up and the phone wouldn't recognize the Sim...

sim card problem
just all of sudden it became invalid sim try multiple time reset or clear data cache sim toolkit original sim to other phone is working other sim to original phone is working other sim to other phone is working anyone face the same problem...

Sounds like they pawned the issue off on you, but it should still be under warranty to have it repaired. When you contact Asus, don't mention unlocking the bootloader. Stick to the hardware concerns.
I have looked over both of those threads, but it seems to be a different issue. My sim is recognized fine, its just the signal strength that appears to be extremely low. Even when the phone has no service at all, it still recognizes the AT&T sim is present.

Yes, it is not the same issue, but it appears to be a similar issue. The important detail being that both required a motherboard replacement.
