[Q] Will gingerbread phones get apps when ICS is out? - General Questions and Answers

I got the DINC 2 a couple of months ago, and I highly doubt ill buy a new phone for quite awhile. So when ICS is rolled out, will gingerbread phones like mine still get new apps??

Yes. From the leaks of ICS, it doesn't look like what it was expected to be. Seems google couldn't keep their "promise". It looks like it'll just be another "froyo to gingerbread update" (meaning the update doesn't really contain anything substantial)
And to make it clear for you, there are rarely any apps that are designed for only gingerbread, so that means the possibility of apps working only on ICS is low. ICS has to be a eclair/froyo sort of update for that to happen, which it doesn't look like.
Unless there is hw included in ICS... >.>

yes, your phone will still get apps
people who are still on froyo (2.2)/and lower still get apps even though gingerbread (2.3) is the current release

But are they compatible?

I mean froyo (2.2)and lower platforms are compatible with apps for gingerbread (2.3)?

Check android.com. They released it right after the event about an hour ago. Galaxy Nexus is on its way and Android 4.0 is out now.

It's been over a year, but I think a while back on the nexus one they were able to build a really crappy alpha from the SDK.
Not 100% sure, but I think that's what happened. But that was only with a GB build.

SDK is to develop app for ICS, not rom.
Apple also released their SDK for developer. Does not mean someone can port iOS on any device.

True true. But they said from the beginning Honeycomb would not be open source. They said 4.0 will be open source, so it's only a matter of time now.

They also announced a HSPA+ version of phone. So it should come to t-mobile soon.
If you really want to see ICS for yourself, run the emulator through the SDK:
Here is an older guide:
http://androidandme.com/2009/10/news/how-to-install-android-sdk-and-play-with-android-2-0-in-the-emulator/
So far the emulator actually runs pretty fast.
Interesting things:
Gesture builder - This is an app in the app drawer, allows for you to build gestures, but not associate anything with them.
Calendar - As the day progresses, the past becomes grayed out. Very easy to tell where you are in the calendar app in regards to timing.
MMS - You can attach files directly from the message creation screen. No need to go into any menus.
Other than that, there are no GAPPs so I can't poke around any further.

They said their would be LTE & HSPA+ versions dependant on release region, Verizon has exclusive don't they? That would mean an LTE release in the US.

cm7 on tmo sgsII

so does that mean your phone can use it? Both phone roms have been compatible with each other. Im not telling anyone to flash it im just giving a heads up so maybe a dev from this forum can get it running if anything needs to be changed first.

wont work since the kernel those roms require is different. think it would be a matter of getting a custom kernel to our devices.
Yeah I tried at like 3am... tried stock and Da_G's kernels with no luck. Hoping someone over there or here can make a change to allow it to work.
I'm running cm7 now. Flash it do not do the conversion package just flash cm7 and gapps. But there is a screen rotation issue. Otherwise very snappy fast and smooth

lol @ AnTuTu giving it a "0" score.
I can't wait till CM7 is ported to the Skyrocket. I'm liking a lot of the little things about the ROM customization.
This isn't a daily driver right now for the simple orientation issue. But it at least lets folks take a peek at CM7.
We need a  emoticon.
know, Galaxy S II which also known as Skyrocket is the Android smartphone with new technology namely LTE which supports 4G network. Now, if you are Japanesse people then you can now purchase Samsung Galaxy S II LTE in your Country. Yeah, Samsung has launched their Galaxy S II Skyrocket in Japan.
Recently, Samsung Galaxy S II LTE is available in US, Australia, and also Europe. But now, it is surpricingly because as the country with advance technology, Japan now can try this LTE smartphone. For the data plan, this LTE smartphone is launched by Japan’s NTT DoCoMo. NTT DoCoMo is the first provider in Japan who did have LTE network.
For the availability, you can purchase Samsung Galaxy S II LTE for ¥20,000 or $258 USD. This price is including a two-year contract with NTT DoCoM0. You can check the specs preview of Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket or check the hands-on video here

Well, that's good news for you guys then. The only thing you should really need for it to be fully functional on your phone is a CM7 kernel.

Tried to send an MMS mssg. It sent/received the picture successfully but on the screen it says "loading new albums and photos" and that wasn't going away.
Then it crashed and said "Activity Gallery (in application Gallery) is not responding".
Whatever that was, it also crashed my launch pad and the icons disappeared.
I'll go ahead and reboot & try a few other things.

SCREEN ORIENTATION WORKAROUND:
Guys, as a temporary workaround until CM7 is ported to Skyrocket, you could consider doing what I am doing, to gain proper orientation. This is a workaround, not a fix.
1) Downoad and install an auto-orientation widget. I used this one, there are dozens of others.
https://market.android.com/details?id=tw.com.sti.android.widget.orientlock&feature=related_apps
2) Go to settings/CM7 settings/Display and scroll to the bottom and make it so there are only checkmarks in 0 degrees and 90 degrees.
Now use the Auto Orientation desktop widget to flip back & forth between portrait or landscape.
Unlocked is for landscape with USB to the right side of phone, and Locked is for portrait.
Works great for me!

[Q] SGS2 App port for our phones!

The apps from the Samsung Galaxy S2 look pretty amazing, e.g mms, contacts e.g. I was wondering if any devs out there would want to look at porting or theming some apps from the S2. I can get copies of just about anything in the S2's system, so if anyone wants to have ago at this I can upload some apk's from the /system/app directory.
Thanks, happyland.adventures

I'm fine with what I've got. What does ICS have that's making everyone here wet themselves??
I have a feeling Samsung will release ICS for the SkyRocket by March. AT&T on the other hand..... but that's pretty cool because with all of the ROMS available (and hopefully upcomming ROMS and MODS) the current OS is still pretty cool and highly functional. I have one question Sean. IS there or will there be a way to enable NFC on the stock ROM. I don't want to keep beating this into the ground, but with ICS a ways off, NFC would be a nice addition to the stock ROM. Someday I will be ready to try different ROMS (more than likely one of yours), but until then I'm going to stick with stock. Thanks.

Skyrocket uses the same sound chip (yamaha), so it'd destroy it on the SR also.
Our ICS dev is even more destroyed by the fact that we have a different SoC, we'd honestly probably have to take the code from something like the Vivid or the Rezound for the drivers for the CPU, GPU, stuff like that, correct me if I'm wrong here dev's.

Well, for starters, it's the first Android OS that's actually built to utilize dual core processing (not the case for Gingerbread). For everything else, try doing some actual reading on ICS sometime.

It's the single biggest leap the OS has ever taken (particularly on phones, since it incorporates all the advancements of Honeycomb as well).
It's much faster, optimized for dual core, features a fully hardware accellerated UI so everything is much smoother and more responsive, much improved multi-tasking support, a major redesign to the actual look, and improvements to most of the native google apps.
If the firmware of your phone is at all a concern to you, ICS is a pretty big deal. It doesn't reinvent the Android experience, but it's as major of a refinement as we've ever gotten.

I believe he may have been talking about this. It's an ICS build from qualcomm for the MSM8660 processor... which just happens to be the processor we have on the skyrocket.

[Q] Rom recommendation

I have been using CM10 since I got my GS3, but I recently got myself stuck in Touch wiz land for a few days. I have discovered that I really like some of the features and that the battery life is phenomenal. The only problem is that I hate pretty much everything that Samsung did to the appearance of the phone. So, my question is, which of the tw based Roms for this phone keep the most of the stability/battery life improvements and features of the Samsung ROM while removing as much of the ugly theming as possible (I LOVE the stock android look, and am baffled that they felt the need to mess with such a beautiful thing.
Excellent question, I feel the same way, hoping for some enlightening answers.

Beans ROMs may be what you are looking for. It is a TW Rom but has the look of an AOSP Rom. I tried cm10 and other AOSP Roms as well. I love the look and speed of them. However, TW does have some nice features that I don't want to go without. CleanRom (tw) seems to be the most stable and quickest Rom for me. I just flash different themes and use apex launcher to get the look I prefer. Hope this helps.

Clean Rom 5.5.1 (JB) with Heinz 57 Theme is a must.
Fast, stable, as for battery life, its decent but not as good as Synergy r73 (ICS)

I think for a fair comparison, ppl who posted recommendation on this threads should ATLEAST tried most if not all roms before they can provide recommendation, if you only tried one, it's not possible to say it's best or good since you have nothing to reference against!! So before you post we would like to see at least have tried at least 3 or more before you recommend...(They are major players). Also mention what kernel you're running with the rom.
ROM:
1. Synergy
2. CleanRom
3. Executioner
4. H311s Rally Stock
5. CM10
Happy hunting and happy New Year to everyone!!!
Beans and cleanrom are great. Keep your eye on synergy thread though. Latest build should drop in a day or two.
Beans 7 is pretty darn good.....the newly ported rom "goodness" isn't bad either, they're being updated and fixed pretty regularly
I have tried all listed above and others like beans and superwhiz . I like the look of beans the best, however cleanrom 5.5.2 with lean kernel seems to be the most stable and quickest combo for me. Definitely going to try the new synergy when it drops.

I have found that the Eclipse ROM is the best. Its super smooth. Hotspot is enabled. I've flashed a lot of ROMs and run Vellamo benchmark and Eclipse always scores 300 points higher than all other ROMs. You really have to do your own research and flash them yourself. Happy Flashing!

Rom ?
I've flashed a ton of ROMs over the past couple of days and the thing is I'm missing something important to me (it's dumb I know) and it's Facebook contact sync, it just doesn't seem to work on ANY of the ROMs I've tried.
Is there a ROM out there that is basically a "pure" Android 4.2.1 + Samsung TW? That's what I think I'm looking for. I'm really sick of the neutering that VZW does to the OS other than that I like what Samsung does (mostly).
Thoughts?
clean rom le 4.5 has proven to be by FAR the best. number one on battery life. (i streamed an hour of pandora on 4g and lost 2% battery.
clean rom is also super quick. (bloons tower defense doesnt think about laggin until you get into the 90s haha if you know what im talking about)
clean rom also has the best layout in my opipion.
i have mine running with "kinda crap mods" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818800 which i highly recommend!!
next i would suggest Synergy rom. but the battery life is noticeably less.
all of this is of course an opipion. but being the flash-a-holic i am, it is just from my experiences.
unfortuneitaly i havent tried 4.2 roms because they put me in a Roaming state. where i have to flash back to stock. so i stay with TW.
Beans 8 just dropped. . Very nice!
Verizon S3, running which ever tw rom I've decided to flash today. .

I highly recommend Beans Build 8. It's very solid, offers great battery life, and plenty of customization as well.:good:
I would recommend one of two: cleanrom version 5.5.1 or superchargedwiz. Both are excellent Roms, and stable enough to use everyday.
