You'll need the USB driver + fastboot. This usually means download and install the sdk as I doubt many are manually grabbing the appropeiate fastboot binary for their system and manually pulling the USB driver.
Thus fastboot, adb and driver become synonymous given the general lack of knowledge regarding the process, but technically you are correct even though I'm guessing he wasn't specifically asking if *just * adb was necessary. I could be wrong though.

Fastboot oem unlock.
Flash custom recovery via fastboot
Flash su binary from custom recovery.
You now have root access and a stock rom, all OTAs will work without issue as well (assuming you don't change anything in /system, flash a new kernel. Etc.

[Q] Clockwork Recovery image, how to flash

I have an XT720 rooted with Universal Androot and have downloaded Rom Manager and attempted to flash CW recovery image multiple times, but it doesn't seem to stick. The app says it's installed but it clearly is not.
Any help on how to flash this or is it just not possible?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried HTC Hub? Not sure if you can download skins or not, i remove all that junk on first boot and never have a need for it. But i can basically do whatever it is i need to to my phone to get the look and feel i want. But the Hub might be a good place to start

Well, you can install lots of launchers on your stock rom and of course your device will be fine.
As you mentioned above, you want a launcher to be simply customized, maybe these are suitable for you:

If you are rooted you can use the kitchen to make your own themes.

You can see one of the themes I made in the kitchen in the post your homescreen thread.

Not hard to root it. Unlock the bootloader using the HTC unlock tool. Flash clockworkmod recovery. Flash a superuser.zip through recovery. Done.

Bad Bootloader in Nexus S 4G

Hi, I made a bad flash bootloader I put in my Nexus S 4G a Bootloader.img of korean version. Now I'm not root and my USB can't set connection. All things are working less USB and CDMA radio. I can start in fastboot mode and download mode but the usb connection is broken. I tried to follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566475 but when I opened my nexus s 4G the electronics things was in different side. I made a USB to UART converter and I could see a linux debugger and a state console and sent me a message such as: The bootloader are not ready to start a USB connection. As I have a Android 4.0.4 working now I'm waiting a Jelly Bean Updated to patch a new Bootloader image. What do you recommend me to fix it?
Flash this.

I guess If you flashed NS4G bootloader, WIFI maybe working.

Thanks you very much but I don't have CWM recovery and it can start in fastboot mode but my PC(Windows MAC and Linux) doesn't recognize it when I plug in it. I thing the protocol USB is broken for the bad bootloader for this reason I can't set connection with fastboot or download mode.

nope. use fastboot to flash recovery. nexus s hacks has links to everything you need. (USB & fastboot drivers, recovery img files, and su zip files)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
replace the recovery.img with the actual filename of your recovery IMG file, then place the su zip on the root of your SD card & flash through recovery. I use cwm, but there are others available.

Great app but this isn't an official one.
The XDA thread has been closed and there's no update on Google Play for 2 months.
I don't know if jmz still has other projects... Flashify is also a great app to directly flash the img files without a PC.
I heard that
Code:
fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img
works pretty well...

It doesn't hurt to know all the options and procedures. Actually OP would have already known this if he hadn't used a toolkit to root in the first place
-1 for toolkits
But yes, options are:
Fastboot flash img
recovery install zip
Flashify flash img
Thanks to all for the help suggestions , but yeah I used a tool kit which means I don't know how to do it manually that's why I asked for the easiest way to update .

It would be good to learn how to do it manually. It's really pretty easy. And you'll know your phone better and know how to do things yourself.
