2.3.7, Stock Rom, Rooted - Which Seat (kernel) should I take? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
Figured I would draw on your collective knowledge and/or opinions.
My device is stock, just upgraded to 2.3.7, rooted, CWM 5.0.2.0.
I've peeked at the stickied thread with a list of kernels, but that hasn't necessarily helped me make a decision.
Mainly I am interested in over-clocking, however if there are some extras thrown in (such as the ability to actually use VPN with a PPTP VPN) that would be cool.
I'm not looking for a complete ROM, just the kernel.
Ideas?

Btw wrong section Haha.
Umm... I have a biased answer: Matr1x

Wanted to add some more info:
Current Kernel:
$ uname -a
Linux localhost 2.6.35.7-gf5f63ef #1 PREEMPT Tue Aug 2 13:57:05 PDT 2011 armv7l
GNU/Linux
I'd rather not backrev my kernel if possible, unless there wouldn't be an issue running 2.3.7 with an older kernel (presuming 2.3.7 changed it).
Is there an easy way to back up my current kernel to revert to in case the new kernel install goes awry?

Where can i find I727R stock kernel?
I'll have it posted in my kernel thread shortly, along with overclock/uv kernel. Stock at&t kernel is already there.

Stock rogers and AT&T kernel CWM zips are now posted in my kernel thread, you can use these to restore kernel/init script/lights driver that are replaced by my custom kernel.
If there's any interest in an un-modded but re-packed AT&T/Rogers kernel to enable init.d support, adb insecure, etc. I can put one of those together too - I'm sure some people would like to run a ROM with init.d support but not a modified kernel.

[Q] Is the latest MIUI.us ota update causing issues?

Hi all, I am new to MIUI and tried it out while waiting for cdtdroids new ICS rom. Anyway, yesterday there was a message in the updater app saying there was a new version available. I made a backup etc and installed it. Since then I have had random reboots into bootloops and freezes requiring battery pull to reset.
I have noticed that the phone is now running @ 1.7GHz where before the update it was 1.2GHz.
Is overclocking really needed? What is the best cpu controller to reduce the clock speed in MIUI?
Should I not install OTA updates?
Here is some info from "About Phone" incase it helps someone to help me.
Baseband 11.65.3504.00p_11.19.3504.29_2
Kernel [email protected] #666
SMP PREEMPT Sat Dec 31 02:43:54 CST 2011
Build MIUI-201200
I flashed it not ota. And it running perfect.

I might try that then. I still don't think it needs to be OC to 1.7GHz.

[Q] does gingerbread need kernel 2.6.35?

I have been using a linux 2.6.29 kernel with several changes for my hardware and I have been using it with Android 1.6 so far, now I would like to jump to Android 2.3.
As Google released Gingerbread with kernel 2.6.35, I am wondering if that version is required or it is just a matter of device driver availability.
Is it possible/feasible to use a older kernel version like 2.6.29?
does Gingerbread require a specific new version kernel feature? if yes, what?
!!Ventanas!!
It depends entirely on your device, because it is largely about the drivers.
If you were talking a major Kernel version bump it could be an issue with the general software as opposed to the hardware drivers, but with that small of a jump, you would just need to make sure you could compile the drivers for your phone against that kernel version.
It's just like Linux on a computer, really.
I can go up to ice cream sandwich with 2.6.29 so no gingerbread doesn't need 2.6.35.

[Q] Overclock with cm7.2 rom

for the longest time I have tried to OC my g2x without any luck. Probably the reason why it never OC was because I ran on the Cm7 generation roms. But because there was a recent update (cm7.2) I'm wondering if someone has figured out how to overclock with this rom.
Current phone stats:
Kernal: 2.6.32.55-cyanogenmod [email protected]
Rom: cyanogenmod 7.2.0 RC1 p999
Perhaps I can flash a new kernal that you guys can recommend and OC my phone.

Not trying to steal your thunder, OP, as any devs/ROMs are appreciated. However, wasn't linaro proven to not do much? I've seen the demo, but didn't CM and everyone ditch it after a week or so and some tests?
Just curious if you could list some benefits and/or improvements with linaro. Just curious. Thanks!

KToonsez uses linaro as well and Evan is a well respected kernel dev as well... I would assume they wouldn't waste time on a project that doesn't show improvement. I think it was quite buggy/unstable when it was originally introduced so it wasn't picked up by CM. I would love to hear some thoughts from a kernel dev though. It's not something you hear/read about a lot and kinda got glazed over when first introduced (IMHO)

I don't know if linaro was buggy before, but I've never had any version of cm run this smooth on my phone. I've always had bugs and archiving when closing apps.
So far its wicked fast and everything is working great!!
One thing I can't find is the option to enable app kills by holding the back button.

Not sure how NFC works for Twistitup (still doesn't work for me), but if it's broken in the CM10 nightly it's probably no different in this build.
I usually don't use CM, but I'm really digging this. Thanks man
