I'm on a provider which only specifically supports WAP / "mobile browsing" access and not full data. They do this by dropping anything other than ports 80 and 443 and using a proxy server.
In Android, using an app like AutoProxy, it's pretty easy to get almost everything up and running. I think the app just forces all connections to recognize the APN / proxy settings you've entered. And because most apps use ports 80 or 443, they just end up working.
My thinking was that the Mango update for WP7 would pretty much have the same effect, as the Proxy settings you enter really should be system-wide and not *only* affect the browser. But either this isn't the case at all, or most common apps are using other ports for some strange reason.
The browser works, and the Mail app works with Gmail and Hotmail. So the Mail app is recognizing the proxy settings at least.
However, People does not work, and Bing does not work, and Marketplace does not work. Strange because I would assume those too would use port 80.
Is there a way to force them to recognize and use the proxy set in the APN?
If, perhaps, they already are, and for some reason are on different ports, is there any way to use WP7 with a port tunneling proxy server?
I would assume the only way to do this is to have some software running on the WP7 similar to tsocks which would force a SOCKS connection. Am I right? If so that makes everything a lot harder...

Ok, so, it seems as though they are not really using any other ports, it's just that for some reason only IE and Mail recognize the Proxy settings in the OS. That is so dumb... Why would they do that?
Honestly, I would pay someone a reasonable amount of money to write an app that fixes this and forces all connections through the proxy, ala AutoProxy for Android.
What a bummer, that's the one reason I refuse to buy WP7 because there is no solution like AutoProxy for Android

Apologies if this has already been asked/answered, but have spent the last two days looking for a solution..
When connected via USB I cannot establish an internet connection, unless I delete the T-Mobile proxy setting.
I've applied the regedit edit that's been mentioned as a solution, but this didn't work.
Is there anyway to use the pass through connection without having to delete the proxy everytime?
The main annoyance is that the phone won't sync with my exchange server whilst connected to the PC. I have mail set up to sync with exchange server and all other items syncing with my PC. My Hermes sync'ed with anything and everything.

T-Mobile's proxy is a pain in the arse and causes all sorts of problems.
I deleted the proxy from my connection on t-mobile nearly three years ago and on every single device i have had since. never had a problem since.
If the proxy is there, it affects ALL internet connections, so when you plug it in to your PC, it is trying to go through a Proxy that you can only access over GPRS.
that's why proxies are a PITA and should be deleted permanently.
and no, it should not affect anyhting if you delete it. or not that i have noticed anyway.

That's a completely random coincidence. The proxy has nothing to do with SMS whatsoever.
you can of course make sure that you are using GSM for SMS. start>settings>connections>advanced network>SMS
set it to GSM. if this is already set, then it has nothing to do with the proxy.
Says "Your text message cannot be sent" after I removed the proxy. SMS is set to GSM. Could it have altered any other relevant settings? Have put the proxy back now but it still refuses to send the message.

no, wouldn't have changed anything else. The proxy has no bearing on SMS whatsoever.
Like i said, i reckon it is just a coincidence, otherwise turning the proxy back on would have fixed it.
If it is set to GSM already try the other three settings as well.

Have found a cable and tested - still no joy after deleting proxy.
Connecting to PC, and items syncing with host PC are fine. Mail syncing with Exchange server fails and can't access internet via pass through.
Browsing and syncing with the exchange server is fine when not connected to the PC.
Btw kempas - SMS works fine after deleting the proxy setting, as it should do.

on the handset:
start>settings>connections>wifi (NOT Wireless LAN)> network adapters
set the drop down box to Internet.
On the PC:
Open Activesync>File>Connection Settings
Set "This computer connects to" to the internet.
Dunno what it is in vista, i have avoided it like the plague....
I did a soft reset and tried again (a couple of time) with no luck, unable to send text message.
Went to settings, connections and run through the network provider setup wizard, let it reset the phone and tried again. Settings 'seemed' all the same but SMS now sent without issue.
Will try removing the proxy again later and testing with another SMS.
EDIT: removed the proxy and sent an SMS without issue this time... So was a "completely random coincidence" as rhedgehog said.
Still can't access You Tube via it's mobile client though, at least, it still says no videos...
All now appears to do what I expect after removing proxy and following rhedgehog's advice. Pass through now works Many thanks!

Just Web N Walk I believe, not plus, so I guess messenger is a no no. Will bypassing their proxy end up with me being charged for data??

No, but it is against the t&cs to use IM software when on basic web n walk. Tmobile block the ports for IM software anyways, it seems for new customers since several old customers managed to get through.....i never could though, so the proxy would make no difference if it is on or off.
I personally am on wnw+ which is TOTALLY worth it for using the HSPA when out with my laptop on location.
Cheers for that. Won't really need messenger to be honest - but the proxy setting interfering with the pass through was annoying.

Log into My T-Mobile or call customer services and get the adult content filter turned off.
I think they blocked it to prevent kids blowing mummy and daddy's credit on watching videos.
Of course, Streaming is also against the T&C's of wnw standard, so it could be that this is why. I'm on wnw+ and had to turn off the filter to get it working.

is there a way to enter a proxy name and port number in the browser or in the system. It can be done for APN but not WiFi!!!

I have the AT&T Fuze with the stock ROM. I purchased it the first day it came out. I think this was 11/11/2008. I have the PDA Personal plan for unlimited data. I have things set up so that my contacts and email synch with our Exchange server. I can remote desktop from my Fuze using the data network to any machine that I can remote to from my computer, so from that, I am thinking VPN must be configured correctly. On one of these machines that I connect to, I have IIS running and put a very simple web page on it (no script, nothing IE specific). From my work computer, it loads fine. I can remote desktop from my Fuze to any machine on the network and launch IE and load it. But, I can't load it directly from my Fuze in either Opera or IE. It does initiate the VPN connection. But, then I get the error HTTP gateway timed out. I'm really not interested in viewing the page that I created. We use Perforce, which is source control system. It has a jobs portion, which we use to track bugs. There is a web interface to the jobs, which is on the intranet, not internet. I don't have rights to remote to the Perforce server, and that is why I initially tried putting a simple page on a machine that i am an admin on. I want to be able to click on a link in my email and have it load the bug in Opera. If I am home and turn on WiFi, and disable the data network, this works fine. This bypasses AT&T's machines, which makes me think there is something that AT&T is blocking. And if they are, then maybe it is the AT&T bloat this is telling them what it is. Our IT guy has verified that I am successfully VPNing in. He is seing the mycingular.net in the firewall.
My boss has the same phone, but purchased more recently, and his is working fine for this. He has flashed the new AT&T test ROM, and done the thing that keeps the AT&T bloat from getting installed.
The fact that remote desktop works, but browsing a webpage on the same machine does not, makes me think there is more to this than just network settings.
If anyone has the anwer to this, please share. If I find the answer, I will post it is well. I have extensively searched the forum for the answer to this, and have not found anything that worked. If I have missed something, I appologize.
Sort of works now, still have an issue
After going to the proxy tab, and checking that This network connects to the Internet and checking the check box that this network uses a porcy server to connect to the internet. Then specify the server. Then go to Advanced and change the HTTP port to 8080 instead of just 80. I also put the user id, password and Domain in on the proxy for HTTP.
But I get prompted for a user id and password from the proxy erveer. I have entered it and clicked the checkbox to save it. It does not display the same info that I entered the next time and it does not display what was entered on the HTTP proxy page. It is a drop down, and I can select the correct one. It's just annoying to need to. I'd like to clear this cache.
Also, to initially get it working I had to disable HSDPA and HSUPA, restart. Then reenable it. I have the registry on my Fuze which give me the menu option on the Advanced network tab to do this.
Figured out how to clear the cache issue - still prompts
The cache was a setting in Opera for passwords.
It still asks for the password. At least it is prefilled with the correct info, since I now only have the one entry, so it is just 1 click, but I should not need to do this step.
Any one know what I need to do to fix this.
If I try to load it in IE, it just tries but never succeeds and never asks for a password, just says Opening.

Navigating to some intranet sites does not prompt me for the isa server.
such as http://machine/virtdir/Default.aspx
seems to work without being prompted
but
http://perforcemachine:8080/@md=d&cd=//&[email protected]//?ac=107&mx=25
prompts me for the password.
Also, in order to get either of these links to work, I need to have in my exceptions:
*.companyname.com/*
Where companyname is the actual companyname.
This is annoying because it makes it connect to the VPN when synching with the exchange server. Before I want on the quest to get these links to intranet sites to work, I synched with the exchange server without connecting to the VPN.
I've tried putting in isa.companyname.com in the exceptions, but that doesn't work.
Is there a way to do *.companyname.com/* except mail.companyname.com?
I suspect all of this is in the registry somewhere.
I have tired a few of the sms apps that send it to your desktop. From Texdro to sms gateway none have worked. At first I thought it was my gingerbread rom on my hd2 but I also tried froyo and that didn't work either. Since it connects through wifi the only thing left I think is the router. I am using the cheap $25 wireless router from walmart. Can anyone maybe tell me how to check or setup the router to get these apps working?

When you set up the texdro desktop client, make sure you enter your phone's correct IP address. Also, the texdro password has to be the same for both desktop client and android app. Got this up and running last night without changing any of my router settings. Quite convenient.
What's the deal with the WAP proxy (for cell / APN access, not wifi)?
My provider requires the usage of a proxy for all traffic.
This works OK for the browser, and for People.
It is completely broken (no connection detected) for other apps: Mail, Maps, Marketplace, etc.
In Android there is a solution for apps which doesn't by default read the OS proxy settings - you can use a rooted app like Proxymater to inspect and re-route traffic first.
In Mango, with the addition of the OS Proxy setting, I would expect that at the very least, all the built-in apps would work, considering this is a Microsoft-added feature. But even that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems to be broken. Is there any solution?
