Hi, I just got my phone a couple weeks ago, found this site and have been reading through the threads as much as possible. After reading through the step by step guide created by FB (thread link below) I feel confident that this shouldn’t be too difficult. When you get to step 11 it says to flash the GB you put on your SD cards. Do you need to do anything before that? The reason I’m asking is most of the ROM’s included their own install procedure like Audiophile FTW says, factory reset, wipe cache, check mounts etc. I wasn’t sure if that still needs to be done?
Also, since I’m starting with a stock phone would it be a good idea to flash Bali for Froyo first to get CWM and do a back-up before I try this?
Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Sorry I meant odin bali not flash.

you should always wipe data and clear cache before flashing a rom. you will not need to odin bali prior to fb's procedure. after you flash gb files, you will automatically have cwm.
Thanks, so I don't need to worry about backing up stock phone before I got to gb?

To be honest, I made backups ever single time I flashed a ROM. And I only fully restored once or twice. Back up once you are in GB. That way you can restore data. Once you are on GB, you won't go back to Froyo...

Two More Questions
Sorry, I have two more questions if anyone can help.
1 - I want to flash icbinb KI3 1.3. It states if you have problems with converting to EXT4 the flash FB's busybox installer before icbinb ROM, however if I follow the guide I should do the below. If I follow the below instructions instead of flashing busybox installer before will i have any problems?
Go into the voodoo menu > enable lagfix and /system lagfix on
11) Flash the GB rom you put on your sd card
12) Flash the busybox_installer.zip
13) Reboot
2- Also, the above guide has you enable lagfix & /system lagix before you flash, but when you flash icbinb KI3 1.3 it says to flash ROM and then enable voodoo. Is it still OK to enable lagfix then flash?
I'm probably making this more complicated than it really is. Again, any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
Voodoo doesn't get enabled until you hit reboot. The order in which you enable voodoo (before or after flashing a rom) doesn't matter, as long as you do the flashing AND the voodoo enabling before you reboot.
Thanks...That makes perfect sense. As I said I think I was making it more complicated than it was. Also, Thanks for making the guide!
Finally had the time to do this. It was really easy and had no problems at all. I'm just in the process of calibrating my battery and working on restoring my apps. Having a couple problems with some apps not wanting to restore via TB, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.
Anyone that wants to jump to GB just follow FB's guide and you should have no problems.

So I flashed the unofficial cm7 build from the dev forum meaning I now have blue Cwm instead of red that I used with s7. What steps are required to reflash s7? Do ihave to use sgs kernel app to reflash kernel then flash s7?
Also I'm having issues restoring apps with titanium. The "stock" app installation screen doesn't allow me to choose install, only cancel. Does this issue stem from not having done a factory data wipe? The thread I read only mentioned to format the system disk but I don't think it was written from the perspective of having come from s7.
Mad props for any help

Yes you will eventually have to use SGS to flash a kernel. Maybe this is the long way around but when I flashed back from cm7 yesterday I used sgs kernel flasher and followed the instructions for infused gb. When I flashed the kernel it got stuck converting partitions to ext4 (probably because they were already in ext4). But I did a battery pull in the middle and was back in red cwm. After that I flashed infused again without hassle with infusion core b. That being said, as long as you have red cwm, you should theoretically be able to flash whatever rom you want.
So in short : just follow the FULL instructions to flash infused v2. Then flash s7. Hope this helps

Thaanks! Will try this if my reflash of cm7 doesn't fix issues....do you think my app install problems are stemming from a previous install?
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
Hmmm...well out of habit I always personally makes sure I format everything, wipe the dalvik cache, fix permissions and wipe the cache partition as well. A lot of the devs stress that this is necessary so I wouldn't doubt that your app install problems are from a previous install. Something tells me, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, that when you are going from a voodoo enabled ROM like infused or s7 to a ROM like cm7 that doesn't use voodoo lagfix, you will have issues with trying to get your apps back because they were using a different (but still similar since they are both EXT4) file system. This is just my guess. If anyone could elaborate more on this please do.
I would highly suggest flashing back to stock if you still experience issues or even ultimate unbrick so that way you can get a clean slate. Maybe try using apps2sd. I own it and can verify that it works well. Many others have also praised it. Good luck!

i went and did another install of cm7 before i ultimate unbrick back to stock. i figure out the app install problem; unknown sources wasn't checked...very noob. but the promt at the beginning of titanium caught me off guard and i cancelled before i could read it.
i, too, noticed that my app icons were intact on my desktop after the s7 to cm7 flash but most (if not all) those that did not require root would force close upon opening. reinstalling the app worked, but i had to get them from the market at the time as my unknown sources box was unchecked. also, i've noticed that widgets do not reload after reboot.
one more thing, after the second flash of cm7, i noticed that flashing gapps only provided me with the market. others such as email and talk were available for dl thru the market but weren't loaded from the gapps flash. i tried multiple times to no avail.
i'm about to ultimate unbrick and reflash cm7 from stock. one more last thing, i'm fairly comfortable with red cwm but have only encountered blue with cm7...how do i wipe the dalvik cache?
thanks for the help!

When using TiBu, make sure and restore apps using the "restore all apps with data" option, just did it coming from S7 to MIUI and worked fine.
As far as Gapps go, I downloaded them from the Cm7 wiki and installed them manually from blue CWM just to make sure everything was added and it worked for me.
Dalvik is in advanced just like red CWM, just a different color.

the "system data" is the no no, and "restore missing apps" is the preferred option, but I've always avoided system data and have been fine everytime I restore.
Hey XDA team!
Here is what I have done so far:
1 click root and removed the fota files,
installed the Recivery: CWM Final
followed a youtube video to upgrade to 2.3.5 with odin
followed a youtube video to upgrade to 2.3.5 with voodoo lag fix with odin,
my goal is to get this on the phone:
{rom}Cwm-GB-2.3.6-Octane-V3.0 XPLOD NO CIQ EDITION 12-10-11
I have worked with other android phones so I figured I just load this through the recovery, so what I did was try to change the mounts to UMMU, however I was unable to unmount system, kept getting the error.
Regardless I still went to install zip from sd and installed the rom.
I did factory reset, clear cache and davlik cache, after first boot I went back, disabled lagfix, installed busybox, and enabled lagfix again (or vice versa)
My phone says it is now 2.3.6 but looks nothing like the screenshots in the rom, and although I am scoring high quadrant scores (up to 2000) it is still not as high as the rom states.
Please help me figure this out
Thank you!
I think the screenshots on the OP for that ROM are themed. Version 3.0 says "version lite no theme just modified lib's etc". Maybe try one of the earlier versions?

It sounds like you're OK. Though I'm not sure what you flashed when watching the YouTube videos.
If you're trying to get to 2.3.6 then have Octane running on it:
Go back into CWM & disable voodoo lagfix on everything
Download RaverX3X's ODIN 2.3.6 ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353176
- Put it in the PDA section of ODIN and flash it
Factory data reset/wipe the caches
Download drhonk's ODIN flashable KJ1 kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032
- Put it in the PDA section of ODIN and flash it
- Let it boot up; if voodoo lagfix enabled itself go back into CWM and disable it to be safe.
Download bhundven's "Subtly Modified Stock with CWM5 + Voodoo Lagfix" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380331 to your SD card
- Flash it via CWM
Download Octane from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305145 onto your SD card
- Reboot into recovery and flash it per Raver's instructions on the link
As for the system mounting issue it's a known bug/issue with Gingerbread and the version of CWM prior to the version in bhundven's "Subtly Modified Stock with CWM5 + Voodoo Lagfix"
Wow thank you! That was very detailed! Judging by your inductions I missed a few steps. Also it looks like there is not much of a selection when it comes to roms, have I made a good choice with the rom I want out should I go for something else

There are a few different methods to get things done; I just laid out the way I would do it There are a few ROMs and everyone has their own opinion of them. I'm currently on RaverX3X's stock 2.3.6 with Bhundven's Subtly Modified Stock kernel. Some folks rave about Ocatne (no pun intended), some love Valhalla Final, others love Airfluip's AOSP style ROM. My advice is to try them out & find which you prefer.
Best of luck; let me know how it turns out.
Once I install my rom by following your directions, to try out different roms would I just install the rom through recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, or are there extra steps that I will have to do for every different rom?

Each ROM is different. Some flash via ODIN/Heimdall, some via CWM. You'd have to follow the instructions for each ROM. If, after flashing a ROM, you have weird issues do a cache wipe & factory reset. That usually will clear out any demons
You are a hell of a nice guy stephen taking time to answer these redundant questions. It amazes me how many people need their hand held and ask others for their time when all the answers they need for most issues (especially flashing roms) are posted multiple times in the forum.

I currently own the hd2 the mytouch 3g the moto xoom the g2 and the galaxy s 4g, all of the phones are rooted with little difficulty by reading the articles here on xda but when it came to the samsung everything was different. The file types and the steps involved were completely different from anything I have done with my other devices and the articles were either hard to follow or referred to other articles.
Once again I want to thank you for explaining this in an easy to understand manner and giving me all the information needed to accomplish my goal.
And I do apologize for asking redundant questions that were previously answered in the forums.

First post! Hopefully it's in the correct place!
Anyways,
I have rooted my phone using the ACE Hack Kit. Once that was completed I wanted to use the cyanogen ROM(recommend from a friend). I fully wiped from phone and then ran the cyanogen zip. Everything is fine until I use my phone for an extended period of time(for instance when I'm trying to set up my phone). For some odd reason my phone will freeze and I will be forced to take my battery out. From what I've read/understand I have done everything properly. Is there anything that I possibly missed or have not done that will cause these random freezes?
Thank you,

You or anyone wouldn't happen to know off hand if the kernel is UVed or OCed? This sounds like a UV or OC problem. Its an easy thing to fix if it is and I find that's is always best to rule out the easy stuff first! Some phones don't like to be UVed or OCed at all and freezes like this sometimes are caused by exactly that, UV or OC.
edit: and oh yeah, WELCOME! If you really like CM ROMs, give absolution a try (at the very least, if you or someone doesn't know if the kernel is UVed or OCed, you're be using a ROM I'm familiar with and if the problem persists on this ROM, diagnosing the a UV or OC problem should be fairly simple and I'll know how to get that fixed quickly for you since I haven't used the straight CM ROM in quite some time!) Actually come to think of it, did you check the md5 number? you could have downloaded a bad link causing a bad flash. It's rare most of the time but I have seen it happen..
If you havent downloaded any apps and dont mind reflashing the ROM just down load the full wipe place in ROOT (No Folder) of SD Card go into recovery.
Full Wipe (DO NOT RENAME AFTER DOWNLOAD)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CJPE5CB7
1. Choose zip from SD Card (Full Wipe 1.5) and Install
2. Choose zip from SD Card (Cyanogen ROM) and install
3. Reboot system and enjoy.
I dont like to do the wipe cache, wipe dalvik whatever method, the zip 1.5 does a full wipe all on its own. Its an EXT4 Wipe so I use it for all EXT4 ROMS that I like to try out.
!!!WARNING: When you flash the full wipe do not exit recovery without installing your ROM. So make sure that when you enter into recovery thru Rom Manager to reflash make sure that you have both (Full Wipe Zip) and (Your ROM Zip) on your SD Card before installing.
I tried cyanogen and completed hated it. Absolution is the Bomb!!! But to each their own flavor.
ENJOY

Not a problem man! Be aware though with the 1.5 wipe that it DOES format your system and data to EXT4, and if I'm not mistaken if you make a back-up on EXT 4 and then format back to EXT 3, it will not work and the same applies for vice versa. If you do end up trying Absolution just drop on by the Q & A if the freezing problem persists, I or one of the devs will try to give you hand the best we can..feel free to PM if you go with Absolution
So does the 1.5 wipe SDCard also? will EXT4 end up being a problem? Also, will do! I really appreciate the help!
I'll def give absolution a shot!

No, if you use the full wipe it pretty much just does the wipe data, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache in one flashable zip. I typically use the 1.5 then wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. It is completely overkill and really not necessary but I do it just the same. No, EXT4 should no cause a problem. I'm pretty sure that almost all the ROMs are now EXT4 supported. I believe it would say it if it wasn't at this point. I know the major ROMS (ARHD, CD, Bindroid, MIUI) are all compatible with EXT4. The only issues you will find with EXT4 is the issue I mentioned in my first post and if you want to use gene's tool to unroot.
Welcome to xda and yes I had the same problem I was setting up setcpu and I sneezed and I accidentally pushed it all the way over to 1.9 and my phone didn't like it it just froze...I was worried :/ so I turned my phone back on and went into setting and forced setcpu to close (mind you it took a few restarts lol) but yes I had let it reset itself and now it's working again I just need to remind myself to do a nandroid once a day xD hehe

I just wanted to thank everyone for the help with my previous question. Now that I got that fixed, I have another question regarding Titanium Backup Pro and Clock Work Mod for the galaxy S 4G. I downloaded the key for the Titan. Backup to make it Pro. I installed Titan. backup fine no problem. Them when I try to install the key that would make it Pro, a popup came up that said: "Titan. My question is how would I install Clock Work Mod on my device and How would I go about clearing the davlik cache using Clock Work Mod?
Are there going to be problem after clearing the davlik cache? And if further on along the line, I want to flash ROM's, should I clear my davlik cache every time just to be safe?

If you have bought titanium backup pro you should have gotten a file emailed to you that you put on your sdcard. Once its there just run regular TiB as its the same but the license will unlock other features.
As for keeping data across the different os's I personally dont recommend saving anything but non system apps. If you want to save texts use sms backup and restore from the play store. Otherwise start fresh that way you dont introduce new bugs into the phone.

Gremlin Remover or Heimdall KJ6 One-Click. The reason is they will both flash bootloaders for you. I referred the OP to the Heimdall One-Click guide because of the more detailed directions and pictures.
So I should just flash a ROM like GB or the AOKP Team Acid ROM anyway right and forget about Froyo? Then install Clock Work Mod on my device or does Clock Work Mod come with the ROM's themselves? If I flash a new ROM, will my dalvik cache be cleared so that I would have enough space to install things? How would I be able to save my contacts, just save them to my SIM card and they should be fine right? Would flashing a new ROM take up my phones internal memory?

You need to flash a gb rom with bootloaders if you are on froyo. Otherwise you will be back upset your phone is broke.
A custom recovery is included in all roms. Once you flash part of the instructions are to factory reset/ data wipe in recovery.
Back you contacts up to the sdcard if you dont use google contacts otherwise you wont be able to access them from the ICS variants.
Yes like I stated when installing a new rom part of it is doing a factory reset/data wipe.
If you really do want to stay on Froyo and you want CWM... then this should work for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
But yeah, you should definitely consider upgrading to Gingerbread asap, *especially* if you're wanting to flash custom ROMs later on down the line. Use the Heimdall One-Click sticked in the development forum.
Eollie i bought tb pro and all that's done is it applies as an app nothing different than when you get tb originally from the market
Lol if you do gremlin remover one click you don't have to make an extra step of flashing a cwr kernel.
As I'm aware heimdall doesn't do it
So, I currently have Tweaked V2.2 and was going to upgrade to V3.0. I understand it's best to go back to stock, get the OTA updates, then Odin to tweaked 3.0.
Obviously, this will get rid of any apps I currently have installed as well as all the additional data I have on my phone. My question is what do you guys recommend doing to prepare for restoring apps and such? Do you:
1) Copy everything on the phone and/or memory card to a folder on your computer?
2) Write down the names of all apps so you can download them again?
3) Use an app for backup and then just restore everything after that fact?
I'm not opposed to using an app for backup but if it's going to undo the purpose of having wiped everything and reinstalling everything, am I better off just reinstalling all apps from scratch?
I looked in previous threads and saw the mybackup tool was recommended but it's an old thread and I wanted to know what people are currently using (and hopefully get to understand what we are trying to wipe to prepare for the app update). Thanks!
Use titanium backup. Once you have it started go to menu then batch then backup all user apps + system data. When you flash your phone download it again and go to batch then restore missing apps with data. Then you can look in the list for system apps you still want (apps backed up but not installed will have a line through the name) and also restore stuff like wifi networks, sms/mms etc.
Out of curiosity, when you restore your phone to stock settings, do you recommend removing your SD card, clearing out your SD card, or does it affect the SD card at all?
Probably a really basic question (I imagine it only affects the phone itself) but I just wanted to make sure that I clear everything that needs to be cleared. Thanks for the quick response!

Doesn't matter for user apps

Thanks!

FWIW, might want to make note of the kernel you are on now. I would recommend to get on stock FP1 first (I know that Odin will/should fix that, but you never know with these things).
here's what I did (coming from tweaked 2.2, 0504 PBJ, EXT4):
1.) flashed 0524 PBJ
2.) converted back to RFS
3.) flashed stock FP1
4.) ODIN tweaked 2.2
5.) flashed the FP5 updaterizer and then the stock FP5
6.) flashed via CWM tweaked 3

Thanks for the recommendation. Out of curiosity, why go to Tweaked V2.2 before going to Tweaked 3.0? Technically, I'm already on 2.2 so I don't really understand why I would want to go back to stock, then go back to Tweaked 2.2 and then going to Tweaked 3.0.
Is there a reason for this?

can't recall why I did this, except maybe to perform a clean install. i suppose you don't need to, but from what I understand, flashing something via ODIN is like performing a data wipe and then installing a ROM all in one swing.
but as I mentioned, these were the steps I took - so no guarantee that it will work for you. but if saves you 30 minutes, why not?

I think it's because we don't have a full system dump and the Odin only covers so much...

PB&J doesn't convert between RFS and Ext4. You have to use this:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/3426-kernel-gb-imoseyon-kernel-stock-repacked-v400-11611/
Then Voodoo Sound will do the converting. PB&J supports EXT4 but it doesn't convert.

I'd go here and read what Dwitherell says about it.

That's cool. Maybe I read it wrong.
