[Q] Help with Voodoo and installing Infused ROM... - Samsung Infuse 4G

Hi.
I have a Rogers Infuse 4G and I rooted it as was explained by gtg using the Odin Root Kernel and all is fine. I followed the instructions to create the Voodoo folder / disable-lagfix folder before flashing the root kernel and again... the phone rooted perfectly but...
I am now wanting to install the Infused ROM and I followed the instructions starting with step 1. as I am NOT on a CUSTOM ROM and I deleted the Voodoo folder I created and rebooted the phone but when it started it went through the process of ENABLING Voodoo and the folder did NOT delete.
I tried deleting it again and it rebooted but both Astro AND Root Explorer still shows the folder as there and active and I have tried deleting it from both programs so...
How do I get rid of it to flash the Infused ROM or do I even need to? Since it seems to be active and I cant seem to get rid of it can I just skip to step 7 of the ROM install instructions and flash the ROM itself or do I NEED to get rid of this Voodoo folder and start by flashing the other Infused Kernel before I can flash the ROM?
Sorry for being so longwinded but I dont want to brick the phone. Please advise...
Thanks,

Friendly morning bump... Anyone?

All Voodoo kernels include CWM.
Once you've flashed a Voodoo kernel that includes CWM and it's done the Voodoo conversion, just flash Infused from CWM and do a "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" from CWM.

So you're saying that the kernel I used to root my phone is OK to just flash the Infused ROM from?
Even though I have tried to remove the voodoo folder twice (its still there) it is still enabled and I can do this even though I am still on my stock Rogers ROM and not on any custom ROM which is what the instructions say?
Please advise...

You usually only have to disable Voodoo Lagfix when moving to a kernel that is missing Lagfix support - which means "bone stock" on our devices as all other kernels support it.
Check gtg's "optional" stuff at the bottom of the root post - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197248

Thanks again for the help and info but I guess my real question now is... Since I have already tried removing the voodoo lagfix, have I messed anything up that would affect my ability to just go ahead and flash the ROM from CWM?
You said that the Rogers root kernel also has the proper CWM in it right?
If yo0u can advise on these for me then I will give it a go when I get home from work tonight.
Thanks again,

Probably not... Worst case you might need to go into Mounts and Storage and format /system prior to flashing.
And make sure to do Wipe Data/Factory Reset when you flash

But how will I know IF I may have to go into Mounts and Storage and format /system before I flash? Is there a way to tell if I have to do this?
Someone advised me by PM to go into Root Explorer and press r/w and then delete the folder and it should go away so I can start from step 1 of the instructions but I dont know if that will work either.

Hmm...
Use ADB or Android Terminal Emulator while your phone is running and type
Code:
mount
If it shows ext4 for /system and /data, lagfix is enabled and you should be good to flash.

OK... I will try the terminal emulator when I get home then as I am not familiar with adb... I did this on my SgsII and typed mount but it gave me a whole page of stuff so I hope its easier on my infuse...

the voodoo folder is created by the voodoo kernel on bootup.
it is the "disable-lagfix" folder or text file (it doesn't matter which as long as it exists) within the /Voodoo folder that disables the lagfix. as long as you have a voodoo kernel you will have a voodoo folder regardless of weather voodoo is enabled or disabled.
also since infused has voodoo it supports both rfs and ext4 and it doesn't matter if voodoo is currently enabled or disabled. the Rom will install just fine. it just takes a while the first time if voodoo installs from rfs. the only exception is if there are errors in the lag fix logs but none of the infuse kernels have ever given me that problem.
the idea of disabling lagfix with the root kernel on rogers is just incase you return to the stock kernel which can't boot the phone on ext4.

OK so I went ahead and tried to install the rom starting from step 7 and I am STUCK in a boot loop or am bricked. All I see is the Samsung logo and nothing else.
How do I get back now and please remember that this is a ROGERS phone so the standard ultimate unbrick wont work as its meant for at&t...
Please help...
EDIT - I CAN get into RED voodoo recovery and am assuming that I should be able to get into download mode as well if I have to..
EDIT 2 - OK so I think I know what I did wrong and it just dawned on me now. First of all I was stupid and did not make a backup of stock DUH!!!
Now what I see I did here is I rooted with the Rogers root kernel which is correct but then I tried to install the Infuse v2 rom over THAT kernel which now I see is listed as ODIN Rogers root Infuse v1 kernel (or something like that) so does that mean I flashed the wrong Tom over the wrong kernel??? If so... can I unbrick it?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

WOW!!! Holy SH!T!!! OK so I was able to unbrick it THANK GOD as I found the proper files to do an Odin flash back to stock Rogers firmware.
This flash gave me ROOT but I am now missing the RED CWM recovery so...
Can anyone now tell me where I need to go and what I need to so to PROPERLY install the Infuse v2 rom???
Please and thank you...
All I want is to run a custom rom!!! Why can't this phone be as simple as my old SGS I9000M or my current SGSII I9100. (International version)?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!!

I think just go through the steps you did before, but don't mess with the Voodoo folder at all.
1) Flash the CWM/Voodoo/Root kernel
2) Reboot, let it convert partitions (Voodoo Lagfix)
3) Once done, shut down, go into CWM, flash Infused and wipe data

Arrrgh!!! I just don't get it!!! I did everything by the book this time and it STILL BRICKED ON ME!!!
As I said... last night I cleaned it with Odin package and all I had was root... No VOODOO at all so I simply went to the Infused ROM 2.2.3 THREAD and followed all the proper instructions for CWM installation staring right from #1 and for crying out loud IT STILL BRICKED!!! What am I doing wrong???
Do I need to have an external sd card inserted or my sim card for this to work because I don't at the moment...
Well back to Odin I go to unbrick again... I just don't get it!!! :-(

did yoy wipe data/factory reset before you flashed? you should try that.
also the first boot takes a long time. you should hear robot voices (seriously) as It converts. but if that causes you trouble then let the root kernel do the voodoo conversion. don't delete anything and don't remove the root kernel. just use it to flash.
if you still have trouble then start over. create a sub folder in the Voodoo folder (the V is capitalized) called "disable-lagfix" all lowercase no quotations. and don't enable lagfix till after the new Rom is installed.

Hi.
I think I did all this... when I started the second time I was only rooted with no voodoo.
I followed the instructions and flashed the infuse v2 CWM kernel with sgs kernel flasher and rebooted the device like the instructions said to do and voodoo enabled itself. (What I did notice is that even after I flashed this kernel and voodoo enabled itself that when I went to about phone it still showed the same code for the stock kernel (it diddnt say it was different) if that matters).
I then downloaded the ROM zip Infuse 2.2.3 full and placed it on the root of my internal sd card and then powered off the phone, went to RED CWM recovery (voodoo recovery) and flashed the ROM. Then I immediately wiped the data and rebooted as per the instructions and all it does is show me the Rogers splash screen for 2 seconds and then sits on the word Samsung forever.
How long does it take to boot past the word Samsung? Could I just not be letting it boot fully and assuming that its bricked?

you shouldn't be having a problem unless the Rom was a bad download. try downloading again.
also, if it fails again put the disable-lagfix file/folder in the Voodoo folder as a last resort and don't enable the lag fix till after the first boot with infused is successful.

You know that I'm coming from stock gingerbread on a Rogers Infuse device... right? I'm not sure that matters at this point but I thought I'd mention it just in case.
Again... does it matter that I'm flashing the ROM without an external sd card inserted and with no sim card in it? Just want to have all my bases covered...

I897UCKB1 - rooting & lagfixing

I used to run custom ROM serendipity 5.11. Decided to give the official stock froyo a try. So, I flashed it to JF6 and installed I897UCKB1 on my captivate. Now, I miss the root privileges and also the stock ROM is still not smooth. There is a big improvement from 2.1 but not there if I compare with serendipity. So, is there any way I can root and install lagfix on my stock I897UCKB1 2.2 captivate? Please help

There are many many threads going on here that covers this. Either get a custom ROM from Cog4 or Torch 1.5. If not then use SuperOneClickv1.6.5-ShortFuse and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760 for lagfix

I tried rooting the phone the traditional way and it tells me the update.zip is not e_signatured (or some thing like that) verified. How do we root the NEW Froyo Stock ROM??
Greatly appreciate any assistance on this!!!

The assistance was in the post right above your own.
The reason the old update.zip method does not work is because Froyo uses 3e recovery, which requires the update.zip files to be signed. The SuperOneClick root bypasses that and directly gives you root. After this you can install CWM, and flash the supercurio voodoo kernel, which gets you the lagfix, and rids you of 3e recovery, all at the same time.

You can install the voodoo kernel via odin, but that can't be done straight from the phone. It is also packaged as a CWM flashable update.zip, so you could do it that way, but you still need a computer to root it first. Without root, you can't get into a non 3e recovery, and without that, you can't flash the package straight from the phone.

Prior to the current stock 2.2, i used serendipity custom rom on my phone. i used AIO toolbox for captivate to flash serendipity custom rom. can i use the same tool to root my 2.2 phone? i am very new to this whole stuff. i see that this particular voodoo kernel provided significant performance improvement on the stock I897UCKB1 captivate. If you can provide step by step guidance that would be great. thanks
I'm rooted and have the 3e problem....i go into recovery with CWM but update fails...tried the 3e patch that accepts unsigned but sbin recovery is read only won't let me delete/overwrite....tried an emu to chmod but says permission denied lol....i must be missing something.... I'm familiar with os but can't seem to figure this. Only thing stopping me from voodoo lagfix is damn recovery file not being deleted

Fix Vibrant 4G Clockword recovery Mod and use ROM Manager for Backup and ROM Flashing

I am modifying this post removing some steps:
Note that you can always go back to orignal Odin ROM using Vibrant Download Mode in the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978836
You should know what you are doing, otherwise I am not reponsible for any device brick.
1- Use SuperOneClick 1.7 to gain root (USB debugging enabled).
Open SuperOneClick and run Shell Root with your phone plugged in.
Use Rage option, then once done, reboot the phone and verify root using "Root Checker" from the Market.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
2. Download "3e_recovery_installer.zip" from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
run the 3e Recovery Installer. When finished, close.
3. Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery via ROM Manager from market by selecting "Vibrant" when asked for phone type. Then reboot into recovery. (You may need to reboot your phone if you get stuck on the ROM Manager "Reboot to Recovery" screen) (Just reboot, then attempt to reboot into recovery again)
At the blue recovery select "reinstall packages". The first time will fail, run it once more, and you should now have the green CWM Recovery menu.
4. Install Kernel Flasher from the Market and backup the kernel.
5. use Rom Manager to flash Data and Dalvik init.d-busybox with data to SD update.zip to fix Data and Dalvik init.d-busybox from below link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744655
6- When finshed you should be able to backup and restore the ROM using Rom Mananger.

I tried using Odin to flash to stock and I'm still unable to get data connection unless I connect to Wifi.
I sure hope you modified the SD Fix.....
That fix was created by Eugene and I to fix mounting for the Vibrant. If flashed to a 4G, it'll break.
I wouldn't recommend this method at all, this looks risky. Just wait for krylon or koush to come out with a proper release of cwm. I have offered to lend my phone to either of them and im sure as soon as either one has the time they will get it going.
I don't like doing things half ass, and while the work is appreciated i wouldn't recommend this guide to the average user as i lost my first 4g to a similar guide.

I tried all the steps till 5 and get the data not being able to connect and then after I Odin back to stock and I'm unable to do step 6.
Krylon can you load up the 2 ROM's you have available for us to try if we can get this damn thing to work?

Yes, Step 5 was created by us to allow both Internal and External SD to auto mount to the phone and PC on the VIBRANT.
We had to modify the stock 4G files to allow this due to the 4G only having a external SD.
For now, I'm reporting this thread due to it being just like the last "CWM for Vibrant works on the 4G" thread which caused bricks, which resulted in me having to create the ODIN image for everyone.
Please do not jump the gun. Be patient.

flashed bionix frost rom stuck on galaxy s screen

Ok so im new and I flashed my SGS4G using these directions to a T!
i would start with krylon final cwm. his directions are pretty straightforward. i used root explorer to move the file where it needed to be.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1099374
i am assuming you downloaded the rom already from the CWM rom section in the bible. its up to you. im biased towards bionix frost, but black ice is just as amazing.
i would also dl the ext converter and bali 3.1 kernel as well. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1123039) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1080871). place all of the zip files you download into the root of your sd card....which means that if you connect your phone to the computer and open it using windows explorer, it is that first window, which lists all of the folders. dont put these files in folders or anything.
once that is done, i restarted my phone in recovery shutting down fully and pressing the power+volume up+volume down. once there, i went to reinstall packages to get into cwm.
then when this loads, i wiped the system/factory reset and wiped the cache. then i went to mounts and storage and mounted my system. (the final mounting output should be: unmount, mount, mount, unmount). i then scrolled to "go back"
i choose install zip file from sd card. choose zip file, which should be the second option if my memory serves me right. scroll of ext converter and install that one. then when that is done, go back to install file from sd card, choose black ice or frost (i LOVE frost) and install that one. then when that is done, i flash my bali 3.1 uv kernel. when that is flashed, i click go back and choose reboot system. once that is done, you will see the galaxy s screen for like 5 min or so followed by the team whiskey logo. once you see this, it will take another minute or so to load up. once you see that the rom loads up...LET THE PHONE SIT FOR 10 minutes. i know it seems long, but just let it sit.
after 10 min or so, i would go into your about phone options and check and see that you have bali3.1 and that the rom is correct.
do these tweaks as well
fugu (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1127069)
init.d (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ghlight=init.d)
you can flash a modem too (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1117331) using the same process as flashing any other zip file.
remember, the first option in choosing a zip file is update.zip from krylons final cwm. do not flash this after the rom/ext/whatever. im not sure if this has been addressed (im still a noob), but everytime i did that, i bricked my phone. lol. so just to answer your question before you wonder...cause i always wondered whether i should flash that or not. lol.
But after all this I get stuck at the galaxy S screen for more than 5minutes although it will let me back into recovery mode. Its called the "CwM voodoo lagfix recovery v3.0.2.8x" and then gives me a list of options. WHAT SHOULD I DO???
I would ODIN back to KD1 and redo it, but really make sure you have the mounts correct (I know you checked this already, but check it again.) If it still does not work, then I would still go back to KD1 and then try it again by re-downloading all the zip files again. That's what I had to do.
Those were my directions! Was my fault. Ext4 needs a supported kernel. You have one now. Go back into cwm and retry everything starting from wiping the cache and system. sorry about that.
Check your mounts after the ext4 converter just to be safe.

Also, don't worry, we've all soft bricked at one point.

No, it didn't work cause you were coming off of stock. The ext4 converter needs a compatible kernel...which you didn't have. Now that you have that red cwm, you are running a compatible kernel. So everything should work now. Reflash everything like I started before after you wipe everything. It should work ok. Like I said it was my fault for not mentioning that, not something you did.

If you are no longer on the bali kernel, flash bionix, so you have bali 2.1, and then flash everything according to my directions. Ext4 will only work if you have the compatible kernel.

Ok so I went into recovery mode and it brought me to the red voodoo screen now should i go into mounts and storage and change that stuff again or what should i do first???

wipe the data and cache. check mounts. flash ext4. check mounts. flash bionix. flash 3.1. go back. reboot system from cwm. wait. let me know how it goes. i'll be online.
Ok i just followed your directions again. But should i flash Bali 3.1 again if i removed it?

Man you're fast. I just got the leak, didn't even have time to uncompress it.
Excellent. So if we flash the stock kernel and get video working again, what are we losing in the process? Sorry if this is a noobish question, I'm just now switching from galnet MIUI.
Shouldnt lose anything...and you will keep root also...

You gain video and hdmi back. You may have to make a slight change to one of the void files if you lose access to your CD card.
I see. Thank you for the help! I was told about this file before, but when I tried editing it last time I messed it up... don't you edit the last value to a different number or something? Do you know what number that is? Thank you guys for the help, I really do appreciate it, what with all these awesome leaks. :]

You will also lose your voodoo filesystem optimizations, init scripting support and the charginghacks/undervolt capabilities (if you like Entropy's kernel).
Well I enjoyed it for 5 minutes before going back to cm7 with thunder script but I still appericate the upload as something different always looking for my next rom fix.

You either change a 3 to a 2 or a 2 to a 1 forget which right now.
Go here for the correct fix for the SD Card: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19908483&postcount=24

If you have flashed the stock kernel and want external SD: In vold.fstab, in the line that starts with dev_mount sdcard1, change from mmc2 to mmc1
I feel pretty dumb right now. I flashed the leak and then uses sgs kernel flasher to flash the stock kernel and my phone is now stuck at the Samsung splash screen upon reboot. I let it sit there for about 10 minutes. Now, I can't even get back to recovery mode. Could someone provide some advice?
Did u pull the zimage out of the rar fike? or did you flash the rar file?? i posted in op to unpack the zimage from the rar file...i know it works becaise i flashed the stock kernel and am runni.g it now....running great actually

Don't you have to convert you file system back before flashing the stock rom?
Yes, I unpacked the zimage file from the .rar and sgs kernel flasher rebooted the phone automatically after applying it.

Did you disable voodoo lagfix in recovery before flashing the stock kernel? Not doing that can cause issues, if I'm understanding this correctly.
You dont have to disable voodoo....all i did was flash thru sgs and it booted up fine...if you are stuck however then disabling voodoo might fix your problem

No, I don't believe I had any lagfixes.
I was running stock froyo with only root and cwm installed
I downloaded the .zip for the leak
booted into recovery and wiped data/cache/dalvik
flashed the leak
phone booted up fine
installed sgs kernel flasher from the market
extracted zimage file from the .rar in the op
used sgs kernel flasher to flash the kernel
phone rebooted and now stuck at samsung screen
I've pulled the battery and then tried to reenter recovery mode, but no dice
I am going to try unbrick through download mode and heimdal
Ok..well i didnt know you were coming from froyo...i dont know how flashing this from froyo would work since i cant even remember when i ran froyo last. I came from my catyrom....might need to be on gingerbread with gingerbread bootloaders ...

[Q] NOOB: How to flash ZEUS to my Infuse?

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong:
a) ATT Infuse Phone is rooted using SuperOneClick;
b) downloaded ES File Explorer and ROM Manager;
c) ZEUS Build 3 zip file is in root folder of my sd card;
d) backed up everything with Titanium Backup;
e) placed the 3e recovery no sig check recovery file into my system/bin folder;
When I try to reboot into CWM recovery, it goes into the "blue" 3e Android recovery. When I install packages, I get an error message.
Then when trying to flash ROM through ROM Manager, I cause a Samsung bootloop, and have needed to flash back to Odin to unbrick my phone.
Is my problem related to the fact I'm flashing from stock froyo? Do I need to change the kernel (not sure what this means) prior to flashing the Rom? Why can't I get the CWM bootloader instead of the "stock" blue Android screen?
thanks in advance - sorry, am a newbie and this isn't my thing.

Is it normal when I flash GTG's community kernel, that my phone starts talking to me and saying something about 10 minutes?? It just scared the #$# out of me, and has been sitting in the Samsung boot screen for a few minutes.
Holy #@$$, that voice is scary. It looks like the kernel worked...
Freaked me out the first time too lol

You need to install the community kernel, then download sgs kernel from the market and install. I had this same problem and this was the answer! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220090
Follow these instructions and make sure you download this http://www.multiupload.com/1E3AWIQYAA if your coming FROM froyo.
Move the file to your internal sd card, then use sgs kernel to install. The sgs was a little tricky, but you'll see the file in there to flash.
Hey thanks for asking DroidNooby! I was searching the forums for "bootloaders" because the Zeus thread said "MUST BE ON GB BOOTLOADERS." All I found was a bunch of people sounding as confused as I was asking "how do i install?"
I was beginning to think it was an inside joke of the Infuse forums lol.
Odin one of the gb leaks (that'll give you boot loaders). Then odin a gb kernel with a recovery. Uncheck reboot before flashing kernel. Then boot up into recovery and flash.
