buying Tablets - General Topics

Can someone suggest a good tablet for gaming so far the transformer is something that caught my eye. seemed good I have to spend 800 on a tab tom for work so I need one that will have a strong proccessor cause its gonna get ran hard with games. Best buy was no help they didnt know the tablets were duel core or anything about tegra please help cause I don't want to regret my purchase cause of lack of knowledge about the tablets . I looked online but that don't really help, cause most of them got the same specs but im pretty sure theres a difference experience with them all.

Never bought one but I'd say if you want games wait for quad core tablets . Dual core ones are nice but tegra 3 will be beast

I am actually looking for a tablet too, kinda a birthday present for my mom - i would like it to be able to run honeycomb on it just coz i think the handling is more intuitive - and of course if it would cost like 2$ that would be great (just kidding) but actually a cheap one would do it - the one i have my eyes on now is the adam but does anyone have any advise on that?

@Zeze I would recommend getting a 7in tablet for a parent. My mom and dad both have 7in tablets and find them to be the perfect size. They currently have a galaxy tab (original) and a rooted cm7 nook.
I haven't looked into tabs much in the last few months, but based on a quick look through I would say the iconia 8gb 7in model would be a good choice, then just add the micro sd card of your choice.
Plus I think its the cheapest honeycomb tablet out there (usually around 300-330$)
I would strongly advise against the Adam. In my experience the build quality is kinda lacking. Choice is yours tho. If you didn't want the 7in iconia, they do have a 10in for 350$. I'm biased towards the xoom since I own one. But if you're looking for something cheap the iconia is definitely the way to go. I don't know what your parents use would be for a tablet, but if its moostly reading and browsing have you considered the new kindle fire?

@bonebeatz
I'd recommend waiting if you're gonna be playing games. If you do need it RIGHT NOW. Then you can't really go wrong with anything made by Samsung, Motorola, Asus, or Acer. Personally I would stay with Samsung or Motorola, but that's device ownership bias. In the end they all basically have the same specs, just different aesthetics. If you had a few in mind we could go over their independent differences if you would like?

you should have bhought the HP TOUCHPAD!

I know this was a troll post, but he did say he wanted to hardcore play games

Nook Color vs G-Tab?

Which is better the nook color or gtab? I'm contemplating between these two tablets to get. Please post here which android tablet I should get and why. Thanks.
Go with the G-Tablet. While the nook is awesome, it's honestly sub par as a tablet. I know first hand. My main gripes, lost wi-fi all the time, no bluetooth, no gps.
I think the price bump is worth all of that on the g-tab.
Thanks.
Well bump!

G-Tab
Better specs, it has the ability to run honeycomb (not sure if it comes with it but I'm sure there are ROMs) and overall worth it.
Nook Color is a good tablet if you can't afford anything else but if you can afford to get the G-Tab, get it.
http://www.viewsonic.com/gtablet/spec.htm
Assuming, this is the G-Tab
I would get a GTAB simply because of the Mods. There are so many owners with a GTAB now due to the price difference compared to the other similar alternative tablets that the XDA community forum for GTAB has a large amount of knoweledge based information that you can take advantage of. GTAB can be modified in so many different ways. I can't speak for Nook cause I don't own one but I own a GTAB and I was able to wipe out the stock Froyo ROM and flashed a Custom Cyanaogen ROM based on Gingerbread 2.3 which also roots the tab. It runs Adobe Flash. I did an Android Market Hack to be able to download from Marketplace. I did a Netflix Hack to be able to stream directly from my GTAB even though Netflix currently doesn't support this Tablet.
I've read also that you can use the blutooth for add-on keyboard, mouse, gamepad, and GPS. It also has an HDMI dock that you purchase separetly which will allow you to connect to a TV and has front facing camera but only 1.5 Mp with built in mic and wifi is very good that can connect 802.11 B/G/N.
I like my GTab a lot...my only complaint is that I don't really need a 10" tablet (which I didn't realize until I already purchased it...but oh well).
Consider getting the Galaxy Tab P1000. Good wifi, GPS, 3g, telephony, decent GPU (SGX540), cpu is very moddable (people have been doing undervolting by 200mV and while overclocking to 1.4). You can undervolt the display, huge battery life, etc. etc. etc.
I'm mentioning this because I'm thinking you'd be interested in a tablet of this size if you are interested in nook color.
Got the nook color because they gave me a great deal. Brand new nook color + case and I got to save a lot of money also. I rooted it and flashed phiremod since I have it on my vibrant and tried it on the hd2.

Why Would You Upgrade?

Alright guys this is becoming ridiculous, theres like 20 posts about wether or not you should buy the new transformer. Ok, you want the latest and greatest? Then stop bugging other people about it.
I love to browse this forum about my device, TF101, I do not want to hear about the Transformer Prime. Go post in the XDA general forum and clutter that section.
Honeycomb was a rushed project to compete with the iPad, therefore there are a lot of bugs and our dev community does its best. With the recent release of ICS this will be fixed. There is hardware acceleration and many other optimizations for phones and tablets alike. This device and other tablets will soon become beastly, because of a software upgrade.
Really, who needs a quad core? Go buy a laptop then, gaming was made for consoles, so dont buy a tablet for your gaming needs. If you do not enjoy the TF101 for at least until the middle of 2012 you are pretty ungrateful fo this amazing piece of technology.
The Tegra 2 is not outdated yet! Please take into mind this post when deciding to post about the prime, most of us do not care.

This makes me feel a shame that I have but one thanks to give in support!
Personally I would like to see a new section for the Transformer Prime. I'm certain it will be an instant hit and certainly there are some Devs that will be all over it as well.
You really think its going to be unlocked? Keep dreaming as Asus has locked down the last 3 months of the first version and the slider. There is almost zero chance they will suddenly unlock the TF2.

Quad-core isn't for just games -.- Android is built around multitasking, and it utilizes everything it can for that. A dual-core tablet or phone can multitask faster, better, and more efficient than a single core can. Therefore, a quad-core can, theoretically, multitask x2 better than a dual-core device.
Tablets are starting to be made to REPLACE laptops. Have you seen quad core laptops? They are heavy and big. Have you seen the thinnest of the Transformer Prime? Having the power of a quad core in a extremely small package is great. Just because you want a laptop that has a quad core doesn't mean you are ungrateful, it just means you're trying to get the newest and the best things, and there is nothing wrong with that.
From what you're saying, you mean to tell me that getting a new car with more horsepower, more cargo room, and has a higher MPG isn't worth getting just because you bought the old model a couple of months ago? If it's gonna save you time, money, and headaches, then it definitely is.
Oh and you have no right calling anyone ungrateful just because they want/like to upgrade to the newest thing. Just because you don't see a need in it or want to upgrade doesn't mean other people don't, and that the people that do are wrong..
I believe that when there is enough interest and support then there is a possibility. The Droid X was a perfect example.

I understand it will technically be able to do things "relatively" faster, but I did not this thread to argue against those who want to purchase it. I am mainly arguing if you want the device great, now don't ruin our Transformer forum with countless threads. These threads can all be in the main general section of XDA.
Realistically though if you bought a car a few months ago and already buying another, you have money to spend. I am not sure of your financial situation(I also do not want to know), but most people don't have that kind of money nowadays...

All of this is irrelevant, the OP's point was this is a section for the Eee Pad Transformer and not the transformer prime and I agree.
Here's the thing people, pragmatically speaking, TF3 will merely be a difference in degree of speed but not of kind.
What you currently do with your TF2 (ie: web surfing, emails, reading, etc) media consumption, you'll being doing on your TF3, but not more.
That's because Android apps simply hasn't the variety of functionality or robustness as those made by bigger companies with deeper pockets for Windows OS.
Example: Polaris Office is a joke, loses formatting everywhere, crashes all the time. You STILL can't print directly from within each program. Programs generally lack the quality and seriousness of Windows programs.
TF3 will remain as a media consumption device, and so far, most reasonable people will see little reason to need a faster web browser or email reader.
I bet TF3 won't have the RAM memory requirements to run Windows 8, and even if it did, it won't run all the programs as those for x86 PCs.
So what's the point in upgrade?
I will be saving my money for a real Windows 8 slate when and if it runs > 8 hours.
Agreed. Can't thank you enough.

Oh stop! Take what he said in the spirit it was intended, to APPRECIATE the Transformer TF-101 - and the last I checked the forum was created for the original. Not that the Prime is not going to be absolutely awesome, and... it will have it's own Section on XDA for all the lucky folks who a) can afford it. It is NOT going to be the bargain that the current Transformer is, that much is clear. and b)The folks who always need the latest, greatest hardware.
Meanwhile, I enjoyed the first 2 or three discussons about the TF 2, but enough already. That was his point too. You don't go into the Droid 1 forum to read and drool about the Droid 4 or whatever goofy new toy is about to be released. You go there becauseyou have a Droid 1 and you love it and want to learn more about it, and maybe make it better.
As I said, the guy didn't post to argue that the original is better, just that he loves it and wants to see this forum stay focused on that. sheesh! Some people want to argue that the new Mustang is superior to any 60's Pony car. Maybe. and maybe it doesn't freaking matter so much. It's all good!
Amen to SmartAs$Phone's post..
TOTALLY AGREE. its like every person who "thinks" they found a new link w/ a little info on it has to open a whole new thread. Dont you think most people glance @ other sites? ridiculous. or my favorite ones " should I wait or should I buy? is the TF a laptop replacement or should I just get a laptop? I just got it, can someone give me a list of the best roms, how to root? french toast or waffles?" OMFG its like they dont have a mind of their own. AND to put the icing on the cake they want to get smart when you tell them to search. AMEN to this thread.....now only if it would put a stop to the BS ones
At the very least post in a transformer prime subsection, not the TF101's

10" mini netbook android 2.2 laptop
i use this one
iPad 2 off course, the price does not depreciate that quick compare to android devices, example the transformer for almost $600 to $350 in less than 6 months, look at iPad 2 still the same price since lauched,
iPad is in my opinion the best tablet at the moment. Honeycomb is just not good ( waiting for ics)
In my household we have a touchpad and a nook color, I've had a samsung galaxy tab, but I returned it.
Here is my take on the current android tablets. if you want the best of the best go with the galaxy tab, but at this moment I would go with the HP touchpad, Installing android on it is very easy, and it will get a ics port as soon as the source code comes out.
I have to agree.
I'm a hardcore Android fan, but until ICS comes out, Honeycomb is a poor excuse and it's like having an oversized phone rather than an actual tool. I hate Apple products, but in the tablet market, as of now, the iPad is very, very good.
But if you need Android, and like a 10in screen, my personal opinion is the Asus Transformer. It's so slim and sexy. They all have the same stats, really, so I mean...yeah. A 7incher would be the Iconia or the Flyer, though Iconia is stronger, Flyer is just...well, slim and sexy. XD
So YEAH. Drop the monies on iPad and sell later when ICS comes you -- you won't lose more than 100 bucks. Heh heh
Well right now android tablets cannot compare to iOS app wise. And that is usually what rakes in the interest. So, I suggest an iPad 2 despite your android desire. If however you can wait for devs to develop more apps for ICS tabs, then by all means go ahead.
So maybe better to wait for ICS?

What Tabs you all are using?
Do you guys not see him saying 'android tablet' at start?
Honeycomb is a good tablet OS. Ics is not much of an upgrade tablet wise if you look at it. Same widgets same multitasking so waiting for ICS wudnt be much use.
Apple products he become OS dependant, means they are nothing much without the OS, but on android you can change many aspects through custom roms. Heck even the touchpad running webOS got the Android experience.
I would recommend Advent Vega tab 10''
tegra 2 processor under £200
If your looking some smaller then definitely Galaxy tab.
the vega tab has froyo 2.2 as stock rom but there are plenty honeycomb roms out for it, plus its got a usb port so if you anticipate ics on this u cuc get away with full controller support for gaming or other peripherals.

This is a loaded question for those who haven't had all the devices...... but tablets I would say galaxy tab 2. The remote control feature alone was a huge plus to have everything connected. I never tried ASUS tabs yet so unknown. Motos tabs are a disappointment!
VERIZON ONLY - As far as phones go... I have tested all phones out for verizon at least a month each. The best right now is moto razr maxx by a long shot. Several reasons why galaxy nexus didn't get the top slot.... the radios were terrible (4g lte for example) and battery life was terrible! Mmm the best tablet? That's easy: The lightest one available (which offers good perfomance)
We all know this, but take a moment to analyze it coldly: ¿how is a tablet different from a notebook / netbook? The major differences are:
- The screen is a touch screen, unlike most notebooks
- The weight: should be about half of an average netbook.
- The way you can hold it, just like a book.
- What you can usually do with it...
I have seen many people use tablets in the same way they use a notebook. They put it on a surface, like a table, and then use it there. Even worse, attach it a keyboard, and you have a very expensive netbook, with far less capabilities! We all know that, no matter how much we love android, a tablet, unlike a computer, is more oriented to content-consumption, instead of content-creation (no matter what Steve Jobs said at the launch of iPad 2). It doesn't meen you cann't create anything with a tablet, but the posibilities are, by far, more limited than a with a PC. You cannnot install Eclipse, PhotoShop, Visual Basic, or Fireworks in a tablet (experiments aside).
Let's be honest. Tablets are, primarily, gadgets designed for FUN. They are awesome. Internet browsing, video viewing is amazing. You hold it like a book, you lie down on the bed with the tablet above you, you use it and hold it in a much more intimate way. When you put it over a table because it is too heavy, all that magic is lost.
That said, choose always the lightest one, which still offers good perfomance (1 GHZ Dual Core should be enough). Seriously, the weight!!!! Even 650 g (1,4 pounds) is too heavy after a long while if you lie down on your back, with a tablet above you, BELIEVE me!
Ah, the 10" is the must-have size. The ideal replacement for a book / paper notebook. In my opinion, 7" is just too small for a semi-useless gadget targeted for entertainment (unless you plan to give it to a child). In fact, I plan to buy a 7" tablet just for my little daughter (2 years old), so my Galaxy Note can be mine again
Transformer tf700 and galaxy s3 probably most powerful phone and tablet right now

The question was best phone and tablet. Not fastest or thinnest. Like I said before if you pick one over many what are you basing it on? I have used all verizon cellphones out and tested very thouroughly...... how can someone pick Nexus 7 when he or she never laid hands on it. These devices are hw/sw..... so all interact differently. I base my findings on facts...... not just assumptions.

Because I respect the Glacier community so much I pose this topic here.
I'm looking to find a cheap, maybe older, tablet to root and pimp like we have for our phone.
It will mainly be used for presentation purposes...video, slide shows, etc.

I have a tf101. Asus makes some beastly tabs but they have bugs and stuff. Like the stock ics firmware causes SoDs but there's an awesome italian kernel dev named guevor that pretty much fixed it and its basically his job working on the kernel.
I've heard the Acer tabs are alright, I saw an A200 for 200 somewhere. There's also a new Acer tab with a 1080p screen coming out soon for 450 and there's also the Asus tf700 coming out that's an ipad 3 killer in the benchmarks.
But if you want to be cheap like me, get a tegra 2 tab. The application of the tegra 3 processing power isn't a huge thing at the moment.

Thanks all. I guess I should have really been specific in that I'm only considering Android due to rootability.....and I dislike the iMachine.

It really depends on your price range. I am gonna make a last pitch for the ipad, it is iOS but you can jailbreak it an stuff. It has WAY better apps and more that are optimized for the screen. I was at the best buy mobile and i could barely figure out how to use the android tablet. You have an issue if the kernel dev can't navigate through the OS to find the settings button. Anyway, if you are dead set on android, google is expected to release a $200 dollar nexus tablet built by asus w/ tegra 3. That will probably be your best bet.

Thanks y'all.
Yeah, been reading up on tabs all day and found some info on the nexus. I wish some details would be released on what kind of functionality it will have, but the price is definitely right along with processing power. I can live without a camera, but GPS might be nice to have in a 7" tablet. Hopefully the info goes viral after I/O next weekend....and ordering one doesn't require a lottery.
Anyone have any experience with the Dell Streak? I've found very mixed reviews out there. Super poor reviews on the Lenovo and Vizio. Seems Samsung, Acer, and Asus have best reviews and fair pricing on 7" tabs...I'm trying to stay under $250, goal being under $200.
I really just can't support anything i, even though I know the products are nice and jailbreakable. I bleed Android for better or worse. Started with a G1, had original chrome beta, and except for Wave and Drive failing, I have never been disappointed by anything g. I've talked and fought so much against iSheep and the iMachine I might get crucified if I showed up with an iPad ;-)

Don't get the ipad. My dad has an ipad 2, doesn't do **** with it... I jail broke it, still doesn't do **** with it.
I mess with it myself and I get so bored with it. Yea its all nice and smooth and user friendly but it doesn't have the functionality of android.

i got a Dell Streak 7, if you want my honest opinion, it's bad. the battery life sucks on this thing, and it took me a whole day just to upgrade to honeycomb. and they literally have NO development support AT ALL and worst of all, the thing comes with a Tegra 2 processor but only 512 MB of RAM. WTF
IMO, Dell tablets aren't worth it.
my dad has an Acer A500 (10 inch) and a friend of mine has the Acer A100 (7 inch). Acer is okay i guess, much better than Dell, but occasional lag on both devices. not sure if it's because of the way my dad and friend uses them, but battery life on the A100 is bad as well. A500 is okay, about 2 days moderate usage.
i think you should either wait for the Nexus or go for ASUS. i hear great things about those tablets, and they seem very great as well. and they've got HUGE development going on over there.

If their devs are anywhere as good as we have here for the Glacier, then I'm all in thanks for the Dell review.

For the best value for your money, I'd suggest the Skypad A2. For just over $100, you get 7" ICS ready tablet, pre-rooted, with HDMI out. How many sub- $200 tablets can boast that? There are a couple of great reviews on Amazon and a handful of custom ROMs.
If you're looking for value, I'd recommend it. I've had no issues and loved it so far. If you're willing to spend the extra couple hundred, you can do much better.

The cheaper tabs only have 512mb RAM, am I correct? My mom's nook tab has 1gb of RAM and a dual core processor, so I refuse to have anything less powerful than my mom's nook tablet.

Yes, the screen resolution and ram seem to be the biggest limiting factor for price. the Asus nexus looks to change this however with serious processing/ram power and a decent screen for ~$200....so the hype talk says. We'll see what happens after I/O this weekend. Bit I agree, for me 1Gb ram will likely be mandatory for good presentations.

Yes, low RAM, but if you're looking for value, how important is that? The 1.2 GHz processor does great with it, and I've regularly used PSX4Droid with no issues. I can't think of anything more processor intensive than that.
It's all about what you need/want. Personally, I'd much rather have the HDMI out and ICS over a nook.

Is that 1.2 single core? What about screen res?
I believe everything should still run smooth on devices with specs similar to those as this phone can too.
I bought fpse, and it actually runs smoother on this tablet if i enable it to use only one core. Lol

Yes, it's a single core. The res is average at best, since it's a 7" WVGA (800x480). It's pretty necessary to use the HDMI out, which gives full 1080p res.
There is no way it can compare to more expensive tablets, but it's something I could throw away tomorrow and not feel bad about losing.

That's pretty sweet. That's something you could give to a child for a toy or whatever, though some parents these days (some I know personally) buy their children iDevices...even the ipad -_-

Exactly. it's something I could literally throw to my 4 year old nephew and not think twice about. A tablet was something I couldn't justify since I have a work laptop and personal one, but the price was too difficult to pass up.
Sadly, I always get the question, oohh, is that an iPad?
Not to rain on the parade but skypad? Never heard of the brand, stick with the big guns bro
