Bug in Gmail app? - HTC Sensation

I have an annoying bug with the gmail apk.
When I hit the "sync" button to look for new emails (I have autosync turned off) and I have a new mail, the app would show me "Inbox (1)" in the upper left corner, meaning there should be one new email. However, sometimes/often that one new email just won't appear in the emails list. I can see my old mails but the new one just isn't there, altough the (1) is displayed. When I go to my the "All mails" Category instead of the "inbox", I can see it, also when I look it up on the PC.
This happens sometimes more, sometimes less often (last time yesterday), and I have no Idea why so. Sometimes I would get for example 3 new mails, but only 2 are displayed
Anyone else with that problem?

me too facing this

You don't have to "sync" gmail as it uses push. So just check the "sync" option and emails should get pushed to your phone when they are received. Why did you turn that option off?
Sent from my brain

Do you refer to the "Auto-Sync" option under Accounts & sync? Because I cannot find a "Push" option anywhere...
If you mean that, I deactivated it because it sucks alot of energy as it refreshes all the time in order to fetch your mails. I'd rather just go into the app and check for new mails myself.
And the fact that sometimes I see the mails in my inbox and sometimes I don't (only the number in brackets appears in the upper left corner but no mail) tells me that this is indeed a bug.
How come only 2 people are having this?

That's not how PUSH works

That's not how PUSH works. Resources are NOT used, or used so little to be insignificant when you have GMail set up to Sync. Basically, as long as there are no messages, you will never get a notification, and your phone will not check mail. When a message is sent to you, ONLY THEN will your phone "do something" by displaying the fact that you have a message.
However, if you use HTC's mail function, that's another story. There you have to actually decide how often you want the app to check mail, or do it manually, as you are doing now. So, even if you get no mail, it will still check as often as you have it set up to do so. This uses far more resources.
Again, if you have GMail set up properly, just leave it alone. It will only "do something" when there is mail. Otherwise, nothing.
Peter

Thank you for the input, much appreciated. Guess I had the wrong Idea of how Push works. I know people kept saying that it eats battery life like crazy on the iphone back then.
So, is "Auto-Sync on" (Accounts & sync menu) = Push on?
Because I still can't find an entry that says push.
Finally, I still have that bug in gmail....

General 'gripes' with my Captivate

OK, so the GPS issue aside, I've encountered some random other problems with my Captivate. I'm JH2 with the SuperRooter tool installed. Some of these are actual problems, some are just gripes.
1 - Sometimes for no apparent reason the brightness will change. It will drop all the way down to the lowest setting and I have to go in and manually raise it up again.
2 - Google Voice has been problematic, to the point where I'm not using it any longer. Even though I've set my phone to send voicemail to my Google Voice number it only works about half the time. The other half it goes to my AT&T Voicemail. I MISS the voicemail on the iPhone!!!!
3 - Most of the time when I unplug the USB cable the icon still shows in the status bar, and when I click to turn off USB it still stays there, and only a reboot of the phone fixes it.
4 - I hate how the ring starts off soft then increases in volume, it's dumb that we can't change that.
5 - The email interface is less than desirable. Actually uit's not the interface itself, but rather a couple limitations. One, you can't move messages to another folder - so I have messages in my inbox that I want to move to another folder in my gmail account, and I don't see the option anywhere to do this, I ahve to log in to the computer to do this. Two, on my hotmail account, the other folders I've created don't even shows up, so I have no access to those messages at all.
6 - I have other random wierdness from time to time, like tonight internet connectivity over wifi just stopped working, then started working again an hour later for no reason.
7 - The only apps I miss are my GuitarToolkit, the DrumKit app, and the i.TV app which was an all in one tv guide and let me schedule my Tivo recordings...
8 - ...and of course we all know the GPS sucks!
I have about 3 days left to decide if I want to keep this device or just fork over what's left of my sould and buy the iPhone 4 (I've been a 3GS user for about a year and have been generally happy once I got it jailbroken). Most of this stuff individually isn't too bad, but put it all together and throw in the GPS debacle and, well I shouldn't have to justify to myself WHY I want to keep a phone...

You should look into K9 mail. It's an awesome app and let's you have multiple identities ala Thunderbird so that you can send from your other email addresses w/o having to set up separate accounts on your phone. Very slick program, can move between folders, has archive, junk, etc.
I don't know about the others. I took my Captivate and returned it, but passed on buying a 32GB iPhone 4 because I know one of two things:
1) If the GPS and lag are fixed and/or GPS is fixed and we get Froyo I'm back to a Captivate or,
2) There will be another upcoming phone that is more open than Uncle Stevie's vision of what he wants us to do with a phone.
Having been an iPhone 3G and then 3GS user (yep, went back to my 3GS but only for 6 weeks or so) I can say that having remembered what real multitasking is, real choice is and real options with software - I ain't goin' back. YMMV.
I'll be willing to bet that number 1 is due to your finger on the notification bar. If you slide your finger across it, the brightness will change.
2. Bug with Google Voice, not a hardware problem.
4. Ringtone starts quietly so you have a chance to catch it before it gets obnoxious. It only stays quiet for half a second, and if your phone is ringing, half a second isn't going to make or break the call.
I had a similar problem with Google Voice. I just deactivated the service for my phone number then reactivated a few minutes later, haven't had any problems since.
I'm not sure if that'll fix it for you, but you might want to give it a try--just go to your voicemail settings on the Google Voice website.

Maybe, but I would agree that the option to turn it off should be available.
I bet the brightness problem is because you can change the brightness by sliding your finger across the notification bar. It's actually a very nice feature when you get used to it.
If I were you,i would go through the google voice mail set up again. I haven't had any problems with it at all.
Also, my ringtone does not start out quiet and then gradually increase in volume. Is it possible that the ringed you have tried are just recorded that way?
Thanks for the tip ob the brightness setting.
As far as I know the ringtone thing applies to every captivate so either yours is going it and you just don't notice it or you've got a special firmware or something

I also missed my visual voicemail. I've found that YouMail is an effective if not perfect replacement (my only real gripe is it is a separate app not integrated into the phone app).
That's too bad. I literally have none of those problems.
By far my biggest problem has been GPS, like others. However, with JH2, left all at stock settings I actually have good accuracy - even after 3 days - google nav has been right on. I used cardiotrainer and went for a walk and it was again completely on - better than my old Nokia N79, better than 5m accuracy.
Initial lock times were slow a bit over a minute (default has skyhook off). I put skyhook on yesterday, so I am interested to see if my improved accuracy after initial lock continues. What I have found is that all the suggested chances in the GPS fix might help initial locks, but went to crap after a day or so - and never really had the accuracy while moving. JH2 at all stock has lower initial lock speed, but must have a gps fw algorithm change leading to much better navigation / moving accuracy.
Bottom line - I will be shocked if Samsung doesn't have a 100% GPS fix next month (or with Froyo).

I dont think you know what you're talking about in reference to Hotmail. I have a hotmail account and when you go to the browser and login to your hotmail account, all the options are there. Right in the middle of the screen is a "More" button, just click that and a list flies out and scroll down and "Move to" and the list of custom folders is right there. It has full functionality of the desktop site.
If you're trying to use the built-in email app to work with hotmail, dont. It wont work. You have to use hotmail through the web browser. Hotmail has a great mobile website.

Yes, to activate google voice for your phone you have to go to the google voice website and follow the instructions there. You have to enter your phone number and what mobile carrier you are using and then it gives you a string of numbers and characters that you must dial from your mobile phone to tell AT&T to forward your missed calls to a google voice server/phone number.
Do that and it should work fine. I did and have had zero problems from google voicemail.
If you have brightness on automatic it will change screen brightness based on light in room. If you go outside it will turn brightness up. If your in dark room it will turn brightness all the way down. You can test by covering sensor on fron with your finger and see if brightness drops. If you dont like it turn off in settings.

Make sure auto-brightness is turned off...also, like someone else mentioned, the notification bar lets you adjust the brightness by sliding across it horizontally while the gray bar is showing. Neat feature once you get used to it, but it also confused the hell out of me when I accidentally slid it. Best thing I've found is to just flick the notification bar up and down quickly (vs dragging it all the way up or down).

Assuming you've set it up correctly (which it sounds like you have, since it does go to GV voicemail sometimes), the problem does lie on GV's end. They make it wait 25 seconds before GV will actually pick it up, so your carrier voicemail will intercept it if it's set to pick up sooner than 25 seconds. Until GV lets us decide how long it takes for it to pick up, you can sort of fix this with the following workaround:
1. On your phone, dial *#61# and click Send.
2. Some information should be displayed: number that the calls are being forwarded to and the delay before the forwarding engages (should be your gv #)
3. Dial **61*+1xxxyyyzzzz*11*30# and hit Send. +1xxxyyyzzzz is your GV #, 30 is the delay in seconds. The delay can be set in 5 second increments, 30 is maximum
4. Dial *#61# to verify that the new settings are active.
Unfortunately this means that it will take >25 seconds for it to send to GVoicemail, but it does reliably work.
As for the GPS, I'm optimistic that the firmware fix that Samsung has leaked will solve that and our lag issues, but I can see how that would be frustrating to some who want it to work now (as well they should). Sorry to hear that you're having gripes with the phone, but hopefully these solutions will alleviate some of your issues.

This is a feature. They built in a brightness slider when you draw the notification tray down a tiny bit and slide your finger from left (dim) to right (brightest)
ah sorry, didn't see the answer already. my bad

No offense, but your assumption that I don't know what I'm talking about is way off...
Clearly, I'm aware that you can manage folders using the web interface in Hotmail, otherwise I wouldn't have known how to create the folder initially that isn't showing up in the standard mail application. I thought it was obvious I was walking about the capabilities of the phone, as in the built in email application...
If I have to use the web interface to manage my email then what's the point of even having an email application?
The email application gives me almost the exact same functionality with Hotmail as it does with Gmail, I think you're mistaken that Hotmail won't work in the default email app. The only thing I get with Gmail that I don't with Hotmail is access to view what's in my extra folders, which really doesn't help because I can't do anything with items in those folders like move them around.

I 100% agree with you about moving email. That is one of my biggest gripes too. Also HTC DOES have this integrated into their mail program, and also folder hierarchy. I think it is just poor that Google didn't integrate these right into the stock mail app, and also that Samsung didn't in theirs.
I think not being able to take MMS photos vertically is annoying. I was used to it on the iPhone; I think vertical or "tall" images look better for Facebook mobile uploads, and I can't find a way to take them so they don't end up sideways in the MMS or mobile upload. Any ideas?
Whats reassuring is that almost all of your complaints can be address through a software update.
Its rumored that the GPS fix + Froyo update will be launched simultaneously or very close together.

[Q] New to the Captivate, text message help

Hey guys,
As the title says, I'm brand new to the Captivate.
When I'm having conversations over text message, is there any way to make the incoming texts appear on my screen in the order in which I receive them? Right now all of my typed messages appear at the bottom of my screen, and if I receive a text I have to scroll all the way to the top to view it.
For example:
Friend: Test
Me: Response
Friend: Test
Me: Response
If messages were typed in this order, it currently appears like this on my phone:
Friend: Test
Friend: Test
Me: Response
Me: Response
Is there any way to change that? I love everything about this phone, but it's getting obnoxious having to scroll up 10 or 15 texts every time I receive a new one from somebody. Thanks in advance.
Honestly, the simplest fix is to use handcent or another third party messaging app.
Edit...I see you are brand new to the captivate.....you heard of the inspire? Might want to give it a thought.
Hmmm... It's certainly not supposed to be like that. My phone always showed the messages in the order I received them, so something is wrong and I couldn't find anything in the settings to change it. You might want to try Handcent from the market, there's a free version and it is EXTREMELY customizable. I mean, it's down right ridiculous how much you can customize every aspect of your SMS and MMS using it. Maybe that'll be a simple fix for your messages not appearing in order. If you decide to go with Handcent, make sure you turn notifications off in the stock messaging app or else you'll get two separate notifications each time you get a text, which gets annoying pretty quickly.
EDIT: I guess I type too slow, newter beat me to the punch
I get the a very similar (or even same) thing running Cog or stock. What I have noticed....this only occurs if your reply has the same time stamp as the received message i.e. if you receive a message at 9:46pm and reply to it within the same minute (in relation to your phone's time), also 9:46pm, your message will show out of order.
Hmm....now that I look over my messages...I have a MILD theory...
Messages are organized in chronological order, but the time stamps do not include seconds, only down to the minute. Afterwards, the system has to organize by something....so it goes to Name. My first guess would be if the message is sent from someone with name that comes before "Me" alphabetically, their message (send at the same minute) would appear first, and vice versa if their name is after "Me." Errr.....maybe it is by phone number, not name.......errrr....damn, that doesn't hold up 100% either now that I have looked even harder.....jeez.....only 1 message might jump up?
eh, I've just learned to live with it. Can't be too picky. Every phone has its little quirks. Just depends on which ones you want to deal with
I had the smell issue with either stock or handcent messaging apps. The problem to me was the time in my region being sent by the cell towers was off by about 70 seconds. When I would travel to another region of the country, I didn't have a problem.
I solved it with a program from the market called ClockSync (though I'm sure there are others) which sets the correct time on my phone.

How to enable manual email sync on Samsung Galaxy S3

Hello all,
Ok - this is really mind boggling and as such I decided to make an account and ask all you experts about it.
I used to have an HTC Thunderbold and with its very poor battery, I had set my 5 emails to synch manually. So, whenever I felt like it, I would just go to settings and click on sync all.
Yesterday I got my Galaxy S3. I rooted it right away, and then plugged in all my email accounts. 5 accounts - 3 gmail, 1 yahoo, and 1 private. I set them up all under the stock app, because I don't like the gmail app and I don't want to download any other apps. That's how I had them set up with my Thunderbolt too.
Now, with the Galaxy S3, the battery is better, so I have set it to check for new emails/sync every few minutes during peak hours and every hour during off-peak hours. But I am just wasting time here - let me just get to the problem:
If I go to Settings -> Email (under Accounts), then all my email accounts are there but the little "loading circles" are greyed out and they all say "Sync disabled". I have a screenshot that I wanted to post but as a new user I am not allowed. So, the button at the bottom of that screen that reads "Sync all" simply doesn't do anything. I click it and it stops loading in a split second.
If I click on each individual account out of that list, then the only option I have is to Sync or Delete the account. If I go to the settings of each email account, then I see that "Sync Email" is checked on all of them, and I have edited the sync schedule for each of them too.... So... how is it that they all say "Sync disabled"??
Moreover, and most importantly, how can I change it so that when I click on Sync all, ALL my email accounts are actually synced?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks

[Q] Option to disable undo email delete

Is there any way to turn off the option to undo when an email is deleted or shorten the duration that the undo message is on the screen. I can't open any other emails for 5 seconds or so while the undo message is up on the screen.
It gets very annoying opening an email to read it, hit delete, and then have to wait to open the next one only to repeat the process.

Are you referring to gmail or samsung mail? Probably the easiest thing to do is find another email client. The mail.com client is based on K-9, but has a very familiar interface and uses the more conventional "are you sure" type warning with the checkbox not to show again.

I'm talking about the Samsung email app. I was thinking I was going to have to check out another email app to get around it. I've used K-9 before. My email account is on an exchange server and it was hard to find a good app that worked well with exchange.
Im not entirely clear on what youre talking about but i have no issues deleting emails and just taping another one with the deleted message with the undo button still there.

Weird gmail notifications returning after being dismissed issue.

I'm getting this weird issue where when I dismiss notifications from gmail, they will immediately come back and then dismiss themselves again one by one.
Easier to show than to explain, so here's a video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/PnGCYlIdcX5ua4Ji2
It's really annoying, especially since the notifications are also sent to my gear S2 watch which then just buzzes like crazy as my phone is cycling through all the notifications.
I've used all the google-fu I know and came up with pretty much nothing, so I'm hoping someone here can help me figure this out.
Potentially related: I get notifications for new e-mails pretty much as soon as they come in, but if I go to gmail on my computer and read or delete that e-mail, the notification won't update. It definitely used to, and I'm not really sure when that changed.
Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!
I'm unable to play the video to see the notification . . . my internet is terrible right now. Perhaps you could just put up a single photo of the notification, or enter the text into your original post?
Check your setting for "Notification Reminders" under the Accessibility tab & find what you may have unknowingly switched on.
Happened to me once, I know how annoying it can be lol.
Hope this helps!
I get the same thing. Seems to be nothing to do to stop it however you may be able to reduce it to one notification in the gmail app settings just go to the app settings tap your email then about halfway down tap inbox, sound and vibrate and make sure notify for every msg is unchecked. Hope this helps.
I appreciate all the suggestions, unfortunately none of them seem to be the solution for me ...
JeffDC - A photo won't show anything, it will either show notifications there, or not, while the issue is when I dismiss a notification, it then comes back again after ~1 sec as another notification, then dismisses again after another couple of seconds, instead of properly dismissing the first time around.
og21 - Notification reminders were already off in accessibility settings.
wombat_combat - Notify for every message is already unchecked.
I get the same, haven't found a fix, but haven't looked hard either.
I suppose theirs still no solution? Been happening to me for months.
Same thing here. Haven't been able to find a solution. Galaxy S10 and only happens for my work email inside the secure folder.
Tagging this one again since it appeared on my google search.
On my previous Galaxy S8+ when I dismissed the notifications (notification shade) occasional a gmail notification (one just dismissed) would pop back up then immediately dismiss itself.
On my new S20 FE when I dismiss the notifications occasionally a gmail notification (one just dismissed) pops back up as if it was a new notification and stays there until dismissed again.
This happens when I clear it from the notifications and as soon as I swipe up the Gmail notification shows again. It's been happening for a while and I don't know how to tell them to fix it.
2021, this is still happening to me all the time. Gmail notifications come back to haunt me after clearing them. Sometimes they disappear after a few seconds, sometimes I have to dismiss them again.
Pixel 5.
I do have a suspicion it might be caused by Samsung Wear, maybe I'll remove notification access from it to see...
Update: ^ didn't work -.-
Same here. Stock Pixel 4a. Only one Google Account set up (which is a quite old Google Apps account).
Edit: The issue was also present on my former mobile, a Nokia 6.1, also running Stock firmware.
I'll bump this, too - same issue for months, Gmail notification pops (w/audio) immediately after I dismiss it. Have also tried all the "Google-fu" I know.
Pixel 4 XL - A11, stock and updated.
November 2021.
Still the same..
This is getting annoying AF.
Android should be better than IOS because it let the users control everything.
But what is with this crap.
I could not find any solution to let the notification notify ONLY when something new comes....
But I haven't tried hard either...
Anyone got any solution on this?
Go to your Gmail settings. General settings. Click on account. Scroll down to "nudges". Turn off. Repeat for each account.
