I recently flashed ICS 4.0.3 on my Nexus S, and now when I enter Recovery it shows me the Android guy lying on his back with his chest open and having an exclamation mark on top and then the screens turns off.
I tried using a flashlight to read the screen and I tried re-flashing the 4.0.3 but to no success. I wanted to use ClocworkMod's ROM manager to boot but it says my phone is not rooted.
The phone was rooted when I had 2.3.6, but since I've updated I didn't root again.
I looked around the forum and I saw something about fastboot, but I'm a n00b when it comes to these things and I don't know how to use it..
Any idea on how to make it go into Recovery mode again? Thanks
While your phone is off; hold the power button and hold the volume up button, then you should be in recovery.

I've done that, I used a flashlight and tried to flash ICS all-over again, but nothing flashes...anything else?
Same problem
A friend of mine has the same problem unrooted stock 4.0.3 when he boots in to recovery black screen. Tried using a torch (flashlight) to see the screen but couldn't see anything on it.
A bit of research has found this section and just trying to find bright lamp to see if works as per a few of the posts on the link below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396615
and yes you can just see the text, we have used a bright lamp at different angles but not managed to do the 4.0.4 update yet...
Cheers
I've already used a flashlight and I could see part of the menu. I tried re-flashing the ICS update to 4.0.4 and the original 4.0.3 ROM, but still nothing. I couldn't tell what error it had or it said. I want to know how can I root again and try to install the ROM from ROM manager?

I remebered I saw this dead droid and seems like need to go into fastboot and download custom recovery again.
I think you should try to load in custome recovery. That is what happen to me and able to have a live droid.
When you see the android guy lying down with his chest open, just hold the power button and push the volume up button, then let it go and you should be in the bootloader menu. Then just use the volume buttons to move it down to recovery, then click install zip from sd card.

I can recommend AOSP+. It's very stable and fast (ROM benchmark 2nd place). It is very stockish, I LOVE IT. The developer is also involved in CodeName Android, a highly customizable ROM, they should update to 4.0.4 soon. If you like STOCK you should go with AOSP+, if you want more options for customization you can install CodeName in version 1.6 or wait for the Update on 4.0.4.
Also very good is Pete's Bugless Beast and Brainmaster's Stock 4.0.4
last night I got OTA for 4.0.4...dk how since I have root. I installed it and it runs sweet. thx for the help guys
how???

Hello everybody. Bought slider101 us... 8.6.5.18 Successfully rooted with Razorclaw. Superuser installed.
Didnt have a chance to flash CWR.
Tried to update through asus notification that i got on my tablet. At the end of update it said something like "failure to update",but it changed to 8.6.5.21 on my tablet. After that tried to install recovery through" recovery installer", couldnt do it. I guess I lost my root on my tablet because of that update and Razorclaw doesnt work with .21 I did try to fix it through ADB commands which led my tablet to non stop rebooting. Cant load a screen after ASUS logo. It keeps rebooting.
The last try was this Nvflash "Unbricking and forever root" but when I hit download batch file it disconnects me from computer and looks like APX is disapearing on Device Manager place.
Cant load to recovery cause didnt install it. Tried to find sollution ,no luck so far. im not sure if its bricked. Thanks for any help in advance.
Update: problem fixed-- somehow could get into the screen where i could wipe data, I think it was system kind of recovery. And then installed nachoroot, cwm recovery, android revolution super wipe and ROM. Works perfect!
I belive you're not supposed to update when rooted.

There are a few NVflash methods to unbrick devices here. You should read them all in general thread and development thread and see which one suit your slider101. And when you find one, please try different PC to do it. Some PC just act strange but some would give you profit..

Just for future reference, what steps did you take to fix it? It was my understanding that nvflash does not work for the Slider at all.

I think it wasnt really bricked, it just couldnt load main desktop screen. Its stucked on ASUS logo.I managed to get into system recovery screen where u can see "wipe data" and i think an image of droid man. So by pushing volume down and turning it on u can see that screen, and u need to point onto "wipe data" little green square by pushing volume up right after Ive read something like "cold boot" written with small white letters. And then it started to wipe all data. After that it could boot to the main desktop screen. From there I rooted with nachoroot since I have 8.65.21. Razorclaw can root up to I think .19.
I just got a new Verizon S3 about a week ago and a few days ago I followed the instructions in the Original development section to install the CM10 nighties. Everything was working great but just a little bit ago I tried to upgrade to the newest build through the clockworkmod rom manager that was installed with cm10 but now when I restart the phone just constantly boot loops. It shows the samsung screen followed by samsung screen (but with booting recovery at the top) and finally the android dude for a few secs then just repeats! How do I fix my phone! Or did I F**K myself good?

Can you get into recovery (volume up + home + power) to try flashing a previous rom download or restore a backup? If that doesn't work, you'll probably need to Odin your way back to stock or stock.root66 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709)

I tried installing from downloaded rom and that did not work ether. I down loaded the odin and the Samsung drivers but the drivers don't seem to be installing right. The phone shows up under devices and printers but has an ! on it. I tried telling it to update the driver by had but I got this error:
Code:
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it
SAMSUNG Mobile MTP DEVICE
This device cannot start (Code 10)
I have the device booted in to recovery ClockworkMod Recovery because thats the only place I can get it with out it continually restarting. (I thought that the Recovery I had was called K-exec or somthing? It looks the same I think though so I am not sure. Is that what broke my system did I break somthing my flashing ClockWorkMod recovery over K-exec? Can I fix that from clockWorkMod Recovery. HELP

I don't think I can get into download mode(If thats the thing with the yellow triangle) you do that with (vol up+power+home) right. Then I press that combo I go to ClockworkMod Recovery v5.8.4.8. I think I have tried most all the options from there.

Upgrade your recovery from cwm touch to cwm 6.whatever.it.is. Cwm touch is buggy. I don't know how exactly you do that if it's not booting to the rom but maybe this can help point you down the right path.

Downside of all the one click this and one click that. You should be required to root at least once using odin and adb before having access to the one click tools as you may end up needing those down the road.

If you really don't wanna take the risk you can just delete it all with Titanium Backup. But hey, if you really want to, go right ahead. Just do a little more research before you jump in. We've all been there, though, so don't feel stupid.

Hi All,
Just got hold of a pretty good condition Nexus S for my Work/ Second phone, and its a dam nice phone. My daily is an N4.
I have read many threads, tried many tips and even ended up rooting and running CM10.1.
I much prefer stock android, so its now on 4.1.2.
Unless I am being an utter nob, and missing the obvious, I cannot get into my Stock Recovery. It seems like its missing.
I have tried Vol+ & power. Vol- to recovery. I get the Android Red Triangle.
I have tried then pressing Vol+ or Vol- or a combination.
I must be doing something wrong.
Any advice would be great.

Just use Nexus root tool kit and put in a custom recovery.. You can use to flash completely to stock, which should restore the stock recovery, but the custom is better and more reliable for flashing..
Thanks for the very quick reply Setting.Out.
I have used the root kit. I used it to root and install a custom recovery.
I used it to return to stock rom too, but still cannot show the stock recovery.
I have seen youtube vids where the red triangle shows and you need to use Vol+ to access your stock recovery, but no luck for me.
Is it possible its missing.
I bought it and prior to buying it was running a custom rom. I asked the owner to return it to stock for me.
I have rooted and got my hands dirty with phones for years and this is just bugging me :silly:

Thanks smit sanghavi, I did finally figured out how to get into the menu of recovery(stock), once you see the green android lying down with red exclamation mark, hold power then click up volume. However unfortunately i might have run out of luck, i couldn't re-flash the stock recovery, because the error says bootloader is locked. As per details in other posts, when i unlock the bootloader, it will wipe all files. Even when im at the recovery menu, windows won't detect the Nexus S when i plug into USB... so unless there is another way to get adb running, then all my files are lost...

Try a different system to see if you can get adb working in recovery...
Hi thanks for reading, I will tell you as quick as I can
Basically I got this Allwinner A31 Tablet Q102 and wanted to root it and flash it when I got it, so I got it only a week ago, week ago from tommorow.
I managed to root it with VRoot and then attempted to install CWM because ROM Manager would say that it isnt supported. So after tons of research I took the method of rooting an Onda tablet which was to use the ADB. I got the Recovery.tar extracted the files inside it and then did the
adb push /data/recovery.img
And stuff like that
After I did all that it told me to hold the VOL+/POWER to enter CWM, I held it for like 1 minute until CWM showed and it was working. CWM version was 6.0.2.7 I think. So I was like oh ok its working now. So then I rebooted the system using the first option CWM gave me. After it turned off it didnt turn back on. So I turned it on manually and all I see is a blank BLACK screen. Thats it. It hangs and does nothing. Cant enter Recovery, safe mode, the USB is not recognized. Infact it doesnt even connect anymore.
If I hold the power button, it turns off then once I let go it turns back on doing the same thing.
Please help me as I only just got the Tablet and can't afford to lose it. Theres too many files I need to keep, only some were moved to the SD card.

Took ages to find out, but its called an Allwinner Q102 something with YBC, Ive heard of a similar one called Allwinner A31s Yonestoptech and was also a Q102
Hey,
What's up with your tablet? I own the same model and was thinking about installing cyanogenmod, but I have no idea yet. Have you managed to figure something out, or found any way to repair it?
Cheers!
flash ??
Try to flash the stock ROM.......
Nah man, I can't do anything with it. Turn it on just a black screen. Holding the volume down button then pressing Tue power button a couple of times makes my computer detect the tablet. But nothing else.
I cannot enter CWM, after I flashed CWM it said Can't mount boot.IMG can't Mount this and that and then I restarted it and it happened.
SO DONT FLASH ANY CWM OR ROMS ON IT.
I really want the tablet fixed man. What the hell do I do?

..no idea what to do...
Hey, I know I'm 1 year late to reply but I only just logged in to XDA since ages! I know right? Anyway, the way I fixed it was to download the firmware for the tablet which I found out by keeping a note about tablet model number (Settings> About device> Model) and spent a couple minutes searching for the firmware for it. Then I used Phoenix suite or just Phoenix can't remember what it was called to flash the tablet. There are plenty of YouTube videos and instructions on the web of how to use it, I can't remember how I did it as this was over a year and a half ago! It's as simple as that and words cannot describe how relieved I felt after reviving it. If an admin sees this, please close the thread. I'm still finding out how to use this site.
