[Q] slow youtube HD streaming help please!!! - T-Mobile LG G2x

I've own my T-mobile G2X for about three weeks; I really love the phone but I have an issue which I tried to solve through T-Mobile's tech department and they were totally incompetent about it.
The issue is that whenever I try to watch HD videos (480p, 720p or 1080p) on youtube it's very laggy and stutters like crazy. I can watch the videos over the youtube app but the HQ resolution is not even close to the HD over youtube. I have tried to stream these youtube videos over my WIFI network (50mb download speeds) and over T-mobiles 4G and it doesn't matter videos are still stuttering.
My wife bought a HTC sensation and on her device I can watch Youtube HD videos smoothly and with no lag AT ALL. I know the G2X has an NVIDIA Tegra 2 but I don't know why it is incapable of streaming HD videos at all. I was thinking that the issue might be that the flash 10.3 is not optimized to work with the Tegra 2 chipsets; I hope and update can solve this issue or maybe some of you know what it's happening.

And what rom are you using again?

I have stock G2x. It's not rooted. G2x with stock 2.3.3 gingerbread installed. I hope this can help you solve my problem. Thanks!!!

I am currently using stock rooted and I don't have issues with playing HD videos.

Do you think that if I root the phone this problem is likely to go away then? what do you think I should do? I'm afraid that if I root the phone I'll void my one year warranty but if that helps I'll do it.

Honestly, rooting may or may not solve the issue. It's always a hit or miss.
Sent from my Calculator with Android.

When you watch the youtube videos do you use the android youtube app or do you actually go to the desktop mode of the youtube and select 1080p? I can watch the youtube videos fine as long as I use the app but if I try to stream the videos through the desktop version and select either one of the HD resolutions then is laggy and stutters. The phone works fine it's just that issue. Thanks again!!

Never trued watching youtube using desktop UA in my phone. I always use youtube app.
Sent from my Calculator with Android.

ahhhhhhh......that helped. My guess is that flash 10.3 is not currently optimized for tegra 2 devices. I know for sure that there will be a Flash 11 coming out soon that supposedly is optimized for the Tegra 2 devices. Whenever you have time if you wish try streaming youtube desktop at 720p or 1080p, I just want to make sure I don't have a defective device. I don't know too many people that currently have this device. Again thank you very much for your time

lol
...it doesnt have the hardware....my atom netbook can barely play 720p streams. I just overclocked my g2x to 1.5ghz max and min, tried 720p on youtube desktop and still had some stuttering.

Thank you!!!!! still stutter with 1.5 huh. My wife has an HTC sensation and plays 1080p youtube sources on desktop UA without a hitch. I believe that that the newer flash version will hopefully solve this issue. Again thank you for your help, it was really nice of you to try that for me I really appreciated it. I'll wait until the Ne Flash version arrives in early October

Root backup, try a different rom doesn't work go back to ur backup and unroot and.send that thing back

Read some of the comments in the market too... after the last update, things have been screwed up with a few devices it seems. Mine was working fine before the update, and now... not so much!

[Q] Anyone try Slingplayer Mobile on the XOOM yet?

I was wondering if the current slingplayer works on the XOOM. I don't want to spend 30 bucks for an app only to find it forces close on launch or something.
Thanks!

I have - it works fine. It looks like Sling updated the Android app yesterday to include high quality streaming, finally! It runs in full screen on the Xoom - the picture looks good (not great, but good). Hopefully Sling will release a tablet-optimized version as well.

Hey dwboston, I tried to look for this app in the market for the Xoom and I can't find it. Where did you find it at? I tried the search button, but it didn't find it either.
Works great for me
after the update, it works ok. the mobile controls need to be tweaked, but it is usable.
Slingbox on Xoom
The app works great on Xoom but is exactly the same as the application for the Android phone. Therefore if you purchased the application for your Smartphone no need to purchase it again for the Xoom.
Also since its the same app the controls could use some tweaking but overall it does what its suppose to and with good bandwidth the video quality is great.
I am working on a video to show you how it looks/works. Ill post it soon.
Slingplayer Overview Video
As promised I have a video overviewing Slingplayer app for Slingbox. Hope this helps those deciding on making the investment. I paid $180 for Slingbox(you really only need the regular) and $30 for Slingbox App for Android.

Excellent video, thanks! I don't have a Slingbox, but it sure is tempting after seeing how flawless and easy it ran on the Xoom.
I bought a Monsoon Vulkano for 109.00 and the app is free. I have been very pleased with the quality on my DX and my laptop. I will try it on my Xoom as soon as I get one!

Your Welcome. Please 'Thanks' me , helps me out a little. I run daily videos of different applications on Xoom so you can check out my channel through that link to see other vids, as well as request Apps you want to see in action. http://www.youtube.com/sleeplessninjas
The app itself is as flawless as the video depicted. Setting up the hardware initially for use over the internet can be a little tricky and its hard to make a generic video on how to set it up because the tricky part depends on customizing some port forwarding on your router. But if anyone is having issues with this setup just send me a private message. You probably shouldn't ask for help with the hardware setup in this thread because it doesn't really pertain to the Xoom itself.

From reading up on the device it looks really impressive. Especially with the HDMI In and the ability to have its own DVR. Thank you for sharing I am going to check it out.
For those that are on Dishnetwork with a VIP 922 or 722 with Sling adapter there is a free application. It shows up on the cellphone market, but not the tablet.
I downloaded the latest phone version in apk format from another site and installed it on the Xoom. The latest version has the HD mode that was just released on the normal Sling player. The browse portion is verticle, but when you play a video it switches to horizontal. Working great for me so far.
I have a Sling Pro-HD coming tomorrow and I am going to see how that works on other devices. If the quality is good I am going to hook it up to a device such as one of my Blu Ray players that has Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon on it to see how that looks and works.

I didn't have to search for it. I have it loaded on my phone (Dell Streak) so it showed up automatically in my list of apps in the Market on the Xoom the first time I turned it on.
I have the slingplayer app on ea bunch of devices. I have it for the ipod touch, my Droid, I even have a Windows license of it from when I had a Winmo phone. I have one of the older Slingbox AV devices and I gotta say it's been great. Now that I can hook the Xoom up to HDMI I can literally watch tv anywhere I am. I am traveling this weekend, hotels typically have HDMI inputs and wifi so I always have my tivo with me. I used it on my last trip to watch local news at night back home. The controls aren't perfect as mentioned above but they're pretty good. I use the app almost daily either on my phone on the Xoom. Most people complain about the cost of the app but to me it's worth it.

One thing if you decide on the Vulkano, just get the "platinum" version it has the same abilities that the other units have but does not come with an SD card or hard drive but they can be added for the dvr feature. With the free apps for all devices, I think its the best deal going. Good luck!

sorry to bump this thing up, but what version of Sling player are yours? mine doesn't work, just loads a black screen, sometimes it hangs there and most of the time it closes.
NVM found an update sorry.
I have a Slingbox AV (old model) and it still chugs away. I watch a half hour show at lunch everyday on the Xoom. Works well.
Sling over Wifi seems to work okay. However, it doesn't seem to work over bluetooth tethering for me. Can anyone else confirm whether or not it's working for them via bluetooth tethering?

Bluetooth will most likely not support the bandwidth required for streaming. I would never suggest tethering (usb or bt) for anything other than just accessing the internet for google searches and other low bandwidth usage.
checkout a BT wiki for more info, BT is just not the best idea when it comes to any sort of high bandwidth file transfers or streaming or even tethering if you ask me... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth
I have my droid 2 tethered to my xoom and I have zero problems streaming my sling box HD.

[Q] FIXED: Amazon Instant Video Lag In Browsers

I could not find this discussed for the TF700T.
Video and audio sync perfectly with the YouTube and Netflix apps. However, I'm an Amazon Prime member and watch alot of Prime Instant videos. Since there is no android app for that I'm limited to watching through a browser. I've tried Boat, the Stock browser, and ICS+. All present a significant lag of video vs. audio. Oddly, I did not have this problem with the Prime I returned for the Infinity.
Anyone else experiencing this? If you were you able to correct it, how?
Thanks
Nobody Has This Issue?
Over two hundred views and no one replies? Really?
You could try browser2ram.
Rooting and installing it has helped me with just about all my browser problems.
Thanks, but I am rooted and browser2ram hasn't helped.
Maybe the issue is on the Amazon server side.
People here don't reply if they don't have anything useful to say.
Wait a few days and see how Jelly Bean handles it?
Other than that, do you have Performance Mode enabled when watching them? Killed all pointless tasks? (Not just in taskmanager.)
After I rooted the device I froze/disabled all the bloatware. I've tried all three performance modes with no change in the video lag.
Does anyone successfully stream Amazon Instant Videos through a browser on their Infinity?
I just checked and i don't have noticeable sync problems. I'm running on 12 meg dsl. My understanding is you need at least 4. Meg to stream good quality. Apps like netflix go through special servers, that help with stream, browser probably doesn't. You cannot really compare. it amazes how low a bandwidth netflix can uses and still look reasonably good.

I just swapped my prime for and infinity last night at Best Buy and Im having the same problem. Amazon prime streaming doesnt sync correctly and Im ticked. What is up with asus? My prime worked perfect even with crappy wifi reception. Can this be fixed. Can someone else check Amazon streaming you can try it for free. I need to know if this is just a few bad tf700 and I need to swap or try something else.

Were your tests based on Amazon Instant Videos?
I have had good results with Amazon Prime using Dolphin Browser; all others I tried did poorly with synch and/or stability.

Might try the dolphin beta version. Works well for me.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
Just tried it myself and also have the audio lag in the default stock browser using browser2ram. Tried using Dolphin beta, which is usually pretty awesome and pretty damned close to the stock browser using browser2ram in terms of speed and it got hung up going into full screen mode. Flash is so god damned terrible on these devices, flash in general runs like champ on my S III. Very frustrating
Replace It, or Live With It?
Thank you all for the feedback.
Apparently this is not a ubiquitous Infinity issue. Therefore I must conclude something is F**'d on mine. Not knowing whether it is H/W or S/W related I think I'll wait until JB is released and replace the tablet if JB does not fix it. I still have a couple of weeks left on my 30 day return policy.
Again, thank you for the help.
UPDATE: Fixed?
Update: I may have found a fix for this. I was browsing the forum and under the GMAIL Crashes post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877292&page=2 I found a reference to FMR Memory Cleaner and the nvidia kernel driver bug. I installed FMR Memory cleaner and brought up the ICS+ browser. Lo and behold the video and audio are in sync with my Amazon Instant Videos!
It would be helpful if some of you who are experiencing the lag issue will test using FMR Memory Cleaner and post your results.
Thank zenaxe for the tip (I've used up my 8 per day "Thanks").
I've tried FMR memory cleaner and it did nothing to alleviate the audio lag on Amazon videos, I haven't read the thread on the nvidia driver bug but when mine is crashing in a game like Dead Trigger, the ONLY thing that works for me is a complete reboot which is annoying. FMR hasn't really ever helped me with most things except if the tab is being laggy and even then it's not 100% guaranteed to work for me
I've had the sync problem intermittently with flash video from several sources, including Amazon. I think mobile flash is the true culprit, and wouldn't be surprised if the problem recurs for you. Every now and then I try and different browser and think it works better, but eventually, it gets out of sync again.
On the Amazon front, I think the only real solution is the Instant Video App. To my knowledge, no one has either the old gingerbread app or the new ICS app ripped from the fire roms working on other ICS+ devices. Hopefully Amazon gets around to supporting Android in general.

I also had this problem on the Xoom and over on the Motorola forum the culprit pointed to there was Adobe Flash on ICS and Jelly Bean (worked great on HC) on certain processors.
As to Amazon porting their app to Android, I wouldn't hold my breath as my guess is that they don't want to draw business away from the Fire line (I have a Fire and Prime looks great on it). Amazon's Kindle app for Android (even on the Fire) lacks functionality that the original Kindle devices support, e.g., collections. It appears that either their Android development capabilities are limited or they are making a conscious decision not to fully embrace it.
Dave
ps There is a similar thread over on the Themes & Apps Forum -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803002 On that thread I posted some info on the flash problem that I gleaned from the Motorola Xoom forum.
IMO, it's just a matter of time before the port hits. Fires are meant to sell content, content isn't meant to sell Fires, which aren't exactly high margin if the hardware is profitable at all.
If they were really trying to avoid drawing business away from the fire, they wouldn't have released an iPad app. Hit up their support page and complain, and I think we'll see progress eventually.
I had the amazon apk working on one of the roms on my nook tablet. Changed rom and lost program compatibility. I don't why Amazon does not have app for other androids but they are certainly making the decision not to. I'm hoping when large Fire HD comes out it will work on other devices. Its nice what Fire does for many. Pretty much everything's done in background, my wife doesn't have to do anything, streaming prime is easy.

Favi Smart Stick

I have tried using this stick for a couple days and I think it has some potential, but the interface is horrid. I'd like to start a discussion about how to modify, root, or at least find some apps that can help make this a better media option.
Anybody else got one yet or that can point me in the right direction?
It comes preloaded with 4.0.1, plex and the ability to sideload apps, so it should be pretty straight forward

What about a custum 4.2 update? would be great with the multiply account function for tv of the familie :good:
Since there is a usb port, does it come with drivers for a computer? And is it stock android with favi's hand picked apps/ui on it, or forked kinda like a kindle?
I just ordered one of these with the keyboard. I should be here on Monday. I am curious to see how this thing works out. I just want to use it for Netflix and HBOgo. Everything else will be a bonus. I will write a small review after I get my hands on it.
I saw this last night. It looks interesting but one of the few reviews on YouTube was horrendous. Nothing worked right. But then again the guy doing the review could be an idiot. I'm kind of thinking the latter is true.

I like the concept of multi-account. I am not sure the 4GB version I ordered could handle too much data (I believe there are duplicates of apps when using muti-account in 4.2, is that true?). Regardless, I think the 8GB version would be better setup to handle that.
In the last week, I haven't used the stick at all. that is partly due to being busy, but also having a bad taste in my mouth from my initial use of the stick (lack of usability) and being really frustrated with force closes, poor responsiveness and having to switch out HDMI cables to use it because I have too many devices connected and not enough HDMI inputs on my TV...but I digress.
I see that the XBMC Frodo Release Candidate 1 has been released http://xbmc.org/download/
my plan is to drop that on the smart stick this weekend (via the USB thumbdrive, I assume) and see how well it can handle it. My hope is I will get 1080 output, the new audio engine, PVR support and other nice goodies in the latest XBMC development and when it is stable and working well, to be able to grab my current XBMC user options folder and drop it into the stick.
Then I will have all my favorites, subscriptions, local network music/tv/movie folders, etc easily ported form my ATV2 iOS XBMC to the smart stick android XBMC....
I will report back and would like to hear if others have tried something similar.
I will follow this thread. Very interesting thoughts.
Do you know if you can control it with your phone/tablet?

The reviews I have seen haven't been the best. I love the idea of this, but maybe its a little under powered. There are other ones out there that have dual core processors. According to Amazon, mine will be here on Monday. If its not up to the task, I might try one of the other ones which have dual core processors.
Ok, so it came early, and I was able to get it hooked up. I have been playing with it for awhile, and my initial impressions are not good. I don't know if it is lack of oomph with the processor, or terrible software, but this thing is barely usable for my needs.
I did download the googletv remote app. It works pretty well. Occasionally, it loses connection, but overall it works fine.
Initial setup is pretty painless. After getting everything up and running, I downloaded netflix and hbogo. Neither work very well. Netflix takes a long time to load and there is terrible lag. After a few minutes, it seems to get better. Because the app is made for tablet/phone, it doesnt work nearly as well with a tv, because of the lack of a touch screen to scroll with. It becomes an exercise in patients to get what you want on this app. The search feature works just fine, but for general browsing, it really isnt very good.
HBOGo is much worse. With big series such as the sopranos, it overwhelms the unit and things almost completely freeze up. There was no way to select any episode because of all the lag. I did a movie to load, but the resolution was subpar and the video is choppy. I have full bars and the Favi is right next to my router. HBOGo works flawlessly on my phone or tablet, but on the TV, it is really bad.
I love the idea of this thing, but i don't see me holding onto this unit very long. It really is a slow pile of junk at this point.
Unfortunately your experience sounds exactly like mine. I am wondering, hoping that the XBMC implementation may do a better job as it may utilize few resources

Upon reading more about the one from laptopmag.com, it comes rooted out of the box. and apparently although it cant reach 1080p resolution natively, some have been able to do so with custom roms, and being only 5 bucks cheaper makes it alot better. Thanks for those links!

720p is good enough.
I am looking at the last link I posted. The MK802 III. It has a 1.6ghz processor where the first link is only 1ghz.
Edit: Just saw the mk802 II on amazon for $37
I should have looked at reviews before I bought this thing, what a pile of crap... It's really terrible, so damned slow. I don't remember even my OG Droid being that slow at 1ghz, and it only had 256mb ram... I'd love to see it rooted with overclocking and CM10.1...
Ok, I've been playing around with this thing. I disabled all apps and processes which aren't necessary.
Stock Browser is terrible. I downloaded Opera and Chrome and they work better, but not great.
Youtube app works really good. No lag, high quality video and sound.
HBOGo is terrible on this thing.
Netflix takes a little time before it works, but it seems to be pretty good. After the videos load (which take too long), it has worked pretty flawlessly.
I uninstalled googletv app once my wireless keyboard came in. The googletv app worked ok, but was buggy. the wireless keyboard works much better.
Its still a little disappointing and a little unstable, but with some tweaks, it might be OK in the future. They have released a rooted access build. The bootloader is locked, so this will limit development. Because this thing was so cheap, I might hold onto it. I have been debating keeping it and hoping it gets better, or sending it back and buying MK802III. I have until the end of January to send back, so I will continue to play with it for now.

But to answer your question here. I love TV launcher or use xbmc for your launcher I use pimp my ROM and ROM tool box to tweak several different aspects of the x5 and x7.
A really good app I love is videomixpro in the other forums I have a Dropbox link to the free version or you can find it on Google its kinda like Netflix on steroids but has a one time fee like 2 bucks.
If you like gaming the x7 can play almost every game ive thrown at it ashphalt 8 plays well plus a slew of emulators I use my x7 as game slash media center good luck

Thank You for all the help Brett.
I sign up for Minix Forums yesterday.
I have received my one a few days ago and waited to give it a proper try until i fixed my Logitech K400.
Soon i will add a few things i've run upon, let me say, minor annoyances, but in general the piece is running good, i am as speaking, currently updating to 005 release and will give it another try until the review.
I haven't installed the 005 update yet. I have been running Finless Bob's rom from freaktab, and it's been treating me pretty well. Strauzo's sdk2 one ran well, but i only have the minix crap remote, so not having the rkremote available made me switch back to the finless bob. We need to get some people who are smart devs to work on developing a great firmware
heh, found out about freaktab just an hour ago, that nexus thing caught my attention, might give it a try as i really need multi-user enviroment.
anyway, as i mentioned earlier, there are some stuff that bugged me a bit. one major problem right now is External HDDs, got two of them connected and none of them is mounted, i just get a notification that the usb storage can be safely removed. Stock firmware, ull notice 1080p is kinda 1080i, doesnt feel FullHD, but then i noticed everybody noticed this, and should be a matter of time until this is addressed.
Then the hardware keyboard needs more attention on this area. "Enter" key does not work in no app as a send command, whether it is a facebook send message or an enter to confirm a password. right click is back button, and moving around pages with two finger scroll is too sensitive (but i was so in Win and OS X with the Logitech K400).
Basically, Minix got not much to do except stimulate a more dev friendly device so it can be community rich, with little to adapt to i see 4.3/4.4 on the way faster then on phones definitely.
Havent done any gaming yet, nor stress tested it with some 1080p material, but using it for browsing and chitchat, flawless until now .
I have a small problem... Just rooted my X7. Everything works fine except there is no app to set root permission like supersu. Every app has full access without asking me. Should I just install supersu or what? I have no custom recovery...

I believe you can download the SuperSU app from the PlayStore but not 100%
check with the guys from minixforum.com
Btw which link you followed to root your unit?
root:

Imortant: You have to replace the adb.exe wich is old and does not work anymore. Take it from android sdk.
Should not be dangerous, because you can always flash a clean firmware. But use at your own risk.

Tested installing supersu. Works fine.

I'm thinking about getting one of these tv boxes; not sure which one. Anyway....
Did you try Paragon exfat/NTFS or similar app? I know Paragon is free and works great for at least a single external hard drive, uhm with power connected.

So MX Player, XBMC, similar video players output interlace mode? 1sometimes with interlace lines? how to fix any jerky / choppy playback in 1080? doesn't MXPlayer and XBMC support H/W accel decoding? is there a work-around trick to fix the interlace issue?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.
Head on over to freaktab.com They have all you need to run 4.4 and OC kernel which will fix choppy video, check out finless 1.8 and lewys hybrid. Also a just Xbmc ROM
Scribed henceforth from thy G pad.

First, sorry for the delay, wasnt much around here.
As the post above says, freaktab.com is by far the best community regarding the sticks/boxes. How i see it, the X7 is getting the most attention right now due to its support, but the community is more alive from shared knowledge, and leaked stuff .
Regarding the technical side, i did try Paragon for exfat, and gave up since they only support that if you contact them, for some reason exfat is not really included on the app. And to be even more honest, i rooted and did not have any problems whatsoever dealing with hardware.
1080p playback is in its final touches, there is a rom based on the kitkat sdk sources released, it is blazing fast yet it uses an old kernel, minix promised that they're next move is going to be with a new kernel, so we have to see what that is going to bring. The only thing is, just like any manufacturer, if they release a newer device then the old ones are going to suffer from official support.
Those devices in my opinion are pretty much under heavy testing era, they still under-perform for the values they've got inside. The more community it has though, the faster they evolve.

Hi Brett,
Have you any idea about how to install and play games that requires downloaded contents ? I had no success with real racing 3, something wrong with the extra download requiring WiFi but even with Wi-Fi on, it still doesn't want to download it's content. I've seen peoples having similar issue but couldn't find any solution even on freaktab.
Im using hybrid firmware.

V10 2K Video test FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay so I had been reading that a lot of people were having problems with QHD vids via YouTube so I decided to investigate. I to was having problems with lagging, stuttering, freezing what ever you want to call it. So I figured it HAD to be the YouTube app and a update will fix this. However my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to test the phone with a sample QHD vid because I just knew it would preform without a hitch. WRONG the V10 behaved the exact same way as it did when streaming the YouTube vids. I'm so disappointed heartbroken even because how can a phone that is purposefully built for extreme media making and consumption fail at playing a simple 3 min QHD sample video. COME ON MAN!!!!!

Oh wow, so you're saying this happened with a downloaded 2k video that was in your storage?? If so, that is very unfortunate. Hopefully this will be an easily resolved issue.
Yep

What's the class of the SD your using, and did you try internal storage?
I have no problems playing 2k videos on YouTube.. Which version of v10 do you have?

What he said
What the OP is discussing was talked about in the QA section by myself and others. Here is the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3255549
But he went a step further as to put videos on local storage to test. I haven't done that yet but now I'm sure that if I had id experience the same result. This is a little disheartening and needs to be looked and tested further. Please those of you who might not be experiencing the same and there's no incentive for you, you still may be able to provide insight for us that are experiencing it. It isn't just a couple of us. And as someone else stated....Stock and Locked.
I was about to post and say that I had no problems either, but then rewatched the Samsung 2k sample videos that are on my SD card and same issue - freezes, stutters. I could have sworn I watched these on the V10 previously and had no issues, but maybe I imagined it. Tried with both the stock player and MX Player, same issue. Disappointing. Running stock/rooted ROM.
For others to test, my T-Mobile V10 video freezes, but the timer continues, at exactly 1:00 on this video in 4k as well...

No SD card, YouTube over WiFi...
I do wish people would stop getting so butthurt 'WORST PHONE EVER!!! about this. There will most likely be and update to fix it as the phone has been out for what, a whole month now? Sheesh...
Edit: If I jump the video ahead by tapping to something like 0:43 it'll play the 1:00 section just fine, but it will just freeze later in the video.
Edit2: I am also out of the box stock.

Weird how it does it right at 1:00. Wonder what the reason is here. BTW i tried it and same results. Froze, but sound keeps playing and time keeps counting. Pretty weak first experience with a next gen phone but like u said, maybe a fix in the works that fix this.
Rooted and rom'd

I watched while my wife was driving on TMO network and on both our V10's Flawless, and watched a few other 4K videos.
