[Q] Anyone try Slingplayer Mobile on the XOOM yet? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if the current slingplayer works on the XOOM. I don't want to spend 30 bucks for an app only to find it forces close on launch or something.
Thanks!

I have - it works fine. It looks like Sling updated the Android app yesterday to include high quality streaming, finally! It runs in full screen on the Xoom - the picture looks good (not great, but good). Hopefully Sling will release a tablet-optimized version as well.

Hey dwboston, I tried to look for this app in the market for the Xoom and I can't find it. Where did you find it at? I tried the search button, but it didn't find it either.

Works great for me

after the update, it works ok. the mobile controls need to be tweaked, but it is usable.

Slingbox on Xoom
The app works great on Xoom but is exactly the same as the application for the Android phone. Therefore if you purchased the application for your Smartphone no need to purchase it again for the Xoom.
Also since its the same app the controls could use some tweaking but overall it does what its suppose to and with good bandwidth the video quality is great.
I am working on a video to show you how it looks/works. Ill post it soon.

Slingplayer Overview Video
As promised I have a video overviewing Slingplayer app for Slingbox. Hope this helps those deciding on making the investment. I paid $180 for Slingbox(you really only need the regular) and $30 for Slingbox App for Android.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V-i-TA5J3M

Excellent video, thanks! I don't have a Slingbox, but it sure is tempting after seeing how flawless and easy it ran on the Xoom.

I bought a Monsoon Vulkano for 109.00 and the app is free. I have been very pleased with the quality on my DX and my laptop. I will try it on my Xoom as soon as I get one!

Update: does not work withmy g tablet even with the latest update. Just hangs at the buffering screen.

Your Welcome. Please 'Thanks' me , helps me out a little. I run daily videos of different applications on Xoom so you can check out my channel through that link to see other vids, as well as request Apps you want to see in action. http://www.youtube.com/sleeplessninjas
The app itself is as flawless as the video depicted. Setting up the hardware initially for use over the internet can be a little tricky and its hard to make a generic video on how to set it up because the tricky part depends on customizing some port forwarding on your router. But if anyone is having issues with this setup just send me a private message. You probably shouldn't ask for help with the hardware setup in this thread because it doesn't really pertain to the Xoom itself.

From reading up on the device it looks really impressive. Especially with the HDMI In and the ability to have its own DVR. Thank you for sharing I am going to check it out.

For those that are on Dishnetwork with a VIP 922 or 722 with Sling adapter there is a free application. It shows up on the cellphone market, but not the tablet.
I downloaded the latest phone version in apk format from another site and installed it on the Xoom. The latest version has the HD mode that was just released on the normal Sling player. The browse portion is verticle, but when you play a video it switches to horizontal. Working great for me so far.
I have a Sling Pro-HD coming tomorrow and I am going to see how that works on other devices. If the quality is good I am going to hook it up to a device such as one of my Blu Ray players that has Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon on it to see how that looks and works.

I didn't have to search for it. I have it loaded on my phone (Dell Streak) so it showed up automatically in my list of apps in the Market on the Xoom the first time I turned it on.

I have the slingplayer app on ea bunch of devices. I have it for the ipod touch, my Droid, I even have a Windows license of it from when I had a Winmo phone. I have one of the older Slingbox AV devices and I gotta say it's been great. Now that I can hook the Xoom up to HDMI I can literally watch tv anywhere I am. I am traveling this weekend, hotels typically have HDMI inputs and wifi so I always have my tivo with me. I used it on my last trip to watch local news at night back home. The controls aren't perfect as mentioned above but they're pretty good. I use the app almost daily either on my phone on the Xoom. Most people complain about the cost of the app but to me it's worth it.

One thing if you decide on the Vulkano, just get the "platinum" version it has the same abilities that the other units have but does not come with an SD card or hard drive but they can be added for the dvr feature. With the free apps for all devices, I think its the best deal going. Good luck!

sorry to bump this thing up, but what version of Sling player are yours? mine doesn't work, just loads a black screen, sometimes it hangs there and most of the time it closes.
NVM found an update sorry.

I have a Slingbox AV (old model) and it still chugs away. I watch a half hour show at lunch everyday on the Xoom. Works well.

Sling over Wifi seems to work okay. However, it doesn't seem to work over bluetooth tethering for me. Can anyone else confirm whether or not it's working for them via bluetooth tethering?

Bluetooth will most likely not support the bandwidth required for streaming. I would never suggest tethering (usb or bt) for anything other than just accessing the internet for google searches and other low bandwidth usage.
checkout a BT wiki for more info, BT is just not the best idea when it comes to any sort of high bandwidth file transfers or streaming or even tethering if you ask me... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth

I have my droid 2 tethered to my xoom and I have zero problems streaming my sling box HD.

[APP] Free Live Cable Channels for Nexus One

Live Tv
Get TV Live TV from the market. Live channels include, MSNBC,ESPN, FOX NEWS, GOLF CHANNEL, CNN, CARTOON NETWORK, DISCOVERY CHANNEL, NBC, ETC. I don't know how he's doing it, but I have MOBITV on my Fuze and AT&T charged me 9.99 a month for some of these same channels. All you need is Froyo 2.2 + Adobe 10.1. Another note, his streams are better ahead of TV MSNBC, or a few seconds behind. However, the quality is much better than paid app MOTV, and video sound is in perfect sync with picture. I wish i could rate it 10 stars for MSNBC alone.
Interesting mind posting a link? Through http://www.cyrket.com/ maybe?
What's the name of the app. I couldn't find it on the market.
eh if he's talking about http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.d3fc0n.android.livetv/

Don't know what problem you are having with this app, but it works perfectly for me. You already posted that it sucks. That's your experience not mine. I can tell you the streams are way better quality then mobitv app, and most importantly it's free. Instead of being 2 minutes behind regular TV it's only a few seconds. Show's exactly what is being shown on TV. No video bull****. Live stream and puts it all in one place, so you don't have to go searching for these channels. I have the app on my desktop. One click to open and then go to channel I want to view, few seconds later it loads the stream. Watched some of Golf tournament on ESPN and looking at show on MSNBC now. What you want a TV guide with time of shows? It's free and it does what it needs to.

Oh so that is the app? It does suck. It seem like it just loads from a browser. The video isn't displaying very well as it scrolls. It very well may be better then mobitv as I never used it if so that is a shame. It doesn't show live streaming for me I checked my tv and compared. The same show wasn't even showing. (maybe it's because of the location I am at? Chicago by the way.) But I guess for a free app it's alright..

Ya, I tried it, not a big fan. Just opens streams in the browser.
i wouldnt say the app sucks cause it does work! However its a lil rough around the edges.
Yeah thanks for the suggestion. It is a little rough but definitely FREE and worthy of the post. It also looks like this app got released THIS WEEK! Some people were just born to hate. Yep. Credit goes to the Dev. I'm just putting everyone on. I've been watching it on WIFI and it is cool for me. Don't know why anyone wouldn't give it 5 stars, cause it's free. Live channels all in one place, easy to access as shortcut on home screen. and "FREE". Once again it's FREE. LOL. Check out 1TVPC too if the economy isn't breaking you. It's affordable, unlike Jetflicks TV, it has live streams, movies on demand, sports, boxing etc.
I gota agree with the op an this one. I dont know how this app is working for everyone else but its workin pretty good for me. It does seems like its loadin from the browser tho an is alil choppy at times but other than that it works great

AGREE!-Its a little rough on the UI side but overall the function is there and thats what counts. If many of you bothered to read the devs description, its his FIRST EVER APP--cut him some slack...i get all local OTA channels 100%fine and some even 2-3secs earlier than my HAVA box (exact same as SLING but better IMO). My only complaint is low volume, and i would be more than willing to pay $5-SO LONG as he keeps adding channels and removing expired links/dead channels. ALSO my friend, you are the dev if im not mistaken but you are for some odd reason telling people to search for TV LIVE!??Why? If its called Live TV!?? I still cannot find a single app called exactly "TV LIVE"--maybe im talking about a completely different app, but this one is made by a Miguntu labs-i cant imagine someone not knowing the name of their own app tho--nwo im wondering....

watch espn?

Does anyone have the app running? Can someone dl it and see if it will let you register? Mine is having problems.
i had the trial running for a day or 2. then it asked me to activate it. since im a comcast user, it wouldnt let me. i think if youre using verizon fios, or regular internet, you can activate it. i think i will borrow my buddy's log-in info for his fios to activate my watch-espn.
just a side note, there are way better sites for watching sports, now that we have flash player on the Tbolt.
Everything works fine for me, I have Verizon FiOS. Streams live, good sound, good quality.

stopstream.tv - this one plays more of the popular games
espn3.com - the espn official online site. works good, but not a great selection.
rojadirecta.es - this one is kinda tricky, cant scroll on the phone, but can tether and then watch it on the laptop.
there is a few more. i just cant remember right now. got to dig through my bookmarks
veetle.com is another one. they have a mobile version of the site as well.

MLB At Bat Tablet

One series left to play, and MLB finally releases a Honeycomb Tablet App. Looks good, and its free, at least for the World Series. I guess MLB is planning on making you buy the app twice if you want it on your phone and tablet.
Definitely looks nice. They're pretty clear that it's a "beta" too. I can't complain; we get a free nice-looking app for the WS and hopefully they'll get enough feedback to have a solid tablet app on day 1 of next season.
Not a fan of having to buy both; I use the phone app extensively. Not really feasible to use the tablet at all times.
Widget would be nice. Still keeping phone app on the tablet to get widget

Yes, and the streams look GREAT, unlike trying to stream the video from the mlb web page onto the transformer. Unfortunately, for the playoffs you can only get the individual cameras (dugout, behind home plate, etc...) and not the actual game broadcast video. But it does look really really good.

Does anyone use the Peel IR App?

I find it pretty much useless.
It doesn't support my system (I use Windows Media Center and its remote). It doesn't offer a TV Grid. It tries too hard to guess what I want to watch when my viewing patterns are kind of unpredictable.
I tried it on my father's system and it didn't know his TV either. (He also has Media Center - but uses a real TV, so double fail - I watch TV on my computer montor, so I don't have a TV).
Peel doesn't seem to have any way to learn a new remote - and repeated emails to the company that makes it has resulted in no replies at all.
The IR remote capability was one thing that excited me about the Note - now I'm feeling a bit disappointed by the weak software they included.

I have samsung TV's and Direct TV and it works very well. Do not use it all the time but every time I have gone to use it I have had no problems. I have two rooms set up on it for two different systems.
I happen to have a Samsung LED TV that it works on..
So along with the Samsung Remote, and Unified Remote apps the Note 10.1 its my new remote for my home theater!
Works for me too for our living room system and mancave system. Although, it isn't necessarily a replacement for the Logitech Universal remotes I have.
I didn't think I'd use it (I have Google TV boxes) but I've started using it for the programming guide. I have a couple different TV brands and it works with all of them. It also works with my Yamaha, Denon, and Onkyo receivers and multiple different Motorola cable boxes. It's not very intuitive but it's pretty cool once you figure it out. And you can set what categories it displays to minimize selection clutter.
I was really disappointed with this app as it first will with a sky satellite box in the UK. I emailed the developer who replied after a couple of weeks to say that it is for American and Canadian users only at present and they are working hard on an international version....thanks Samsung for marketing this somewhat useless app for most of the world.

works just fine with my home theater setup... Mitsubishi HDTV, Onkyo receiver, Panasonic BD player, Comcast box.
The original version of Peel was kind of basic, but they upgraded it recently to include channel controls and whatnot, so it's a bit more useful than it was.
Do I use it? No, not really. I know when and what I want to watch, so it's more of a "look at what my tablet does!" feature more than anything. It's neat and all, but yeah, just no real need for it.
I tried using it but it will not work with my Dish Network sat box VIP 722. sent email to developer but got no useful help.

Well, I'd be pretty surprised if it didn't support Samsung TVs and components since it's included on - you know - a Samsung tablet.
That being said, I guess what's bothering me is the lack of any way to 'train' the remote. There are very few other remote TV apps out there.
It's one of those cases where if you have a TV or system they support, live in the right country and find their approach to TV good, it's a good app. If any of those are false, it's pretty much useless. I'm also kind of disappointed by the terrible customer support Peel seems to offer.
Ah well, time to dig into the kernel code and see if I can write something a bit more generic and easier to use - with remote training capability.

Sounds interesting. I originally thought I could clone other remotes or whatever. But peel just scans through its own data base of codes. Which seems to be limited.
Have you tried mentioning the limitation on the playstore review? I see alot of developers quick to respond up there.

yes it is the box for dual rooms and I set the primary receiver to use IR but it didn't work. I have read about the problem on other websites also. Not sure why the developer hasn't updated the software to fix the problem yet.

Definitely worth a try...
I see a lot of people are using this, but I got nowhere with it. The first thing it tried to do was turn on my TV. It's a Toshiba flatscreen (only a couple of years old) and didn't work. It prompted me to send a message to the developers. Okay, great. But then it didn't prompt me to do anything else, and I can't figure out how to get it to do anything else. I'd like to try to get it to turn on my receiver or Time Warner cable box. Or use the guides everyone's talking about. But I can't get past the "turning on the TV part."
What am I missing?
i have an Olevia 537H that it was giving me some problems with. the first code it sent worked, or so i thought, but then i couldn't change the source, up/down onthe channels, so i reset it. this time i skipped the first one that turned the tv on, and the next code that worked i went with it. works flawless now, source, etc. i don't necessarily like the scrolling through the shows on because it seems to "grip" the screen past the show i want, or go back one, but it works pretty decently. my remote for the tv sucks so this gives me what i need.

What about a custum 4.2 update? would be great with the multiply account function for tv of the familie :good:
Since there is a usb port, does it come with drivers for a computer? And is it stock android with favi's hand picked apps/ui on it, or forked kinda like a kindle?
I just ordered one of these with the keyboard. I should be here on Monday. I am curious to see how this thing works out. I just want to use it for Netflix and HBOgo. Everything else will be a bonus. I will write a small review after I get my hands on it.
I saw this last night. It looks interesting but one of the few reviews on YouTube was horrendous. Nothing worked right. But then again the guy doing the review could be an idiot. I'm kind of thinking the latter is true.

I like the concept of multi-account. I am not sure the 4GB version I ordered could handle too much data (I believe there are duplicates of apps when using muti-account in 4.2, is that true?). Regardless, I think the 8GB version would be better setup to handle that.
In the last week, I haven't used the stick at all. that is partly due to being busy, but also having a bad taste in my mouth from my initial use of the stick (lack of usability) and being really frustrated with force closes, poor responsiveness and having to switch out HDMI cables to use it because I have too many devices connected and not enough HDMI inputs on my TV...but I digress.
I see that the XBMC Frodo Release Candidate 1 has been released http://xbmc.org/download/
my plan is to drop that on the smart stick this weekend (via the USB thumbdrive, I assume) and see how well it can handle it. My hope is I will get 1080 output, the new audio engine, PVR support and other nice goodies in the latest XBMC development and when it is stable and working well, to be able to grab my current XBMC user options folder and drop it into the stick.
Then I will have all my favorites, subscriptions, local network music/tv/movie folders, etc easily ported form my ATV2 iOS XBMC to the smart stick android XBMC....
I will report back and would like to hear if others have tried something similar.
I will follow this thread. Very interesting thoughts.
Do you know if you can control it with your phone/tablet?
Would be awesome to make my Nexus 7 into remote!

EDIT: Or maybe this one is viable? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.entertailion.android.remote
Able Remote..

The reviews I have seen haven't been the best. I love the idea of this, but maybe its a little under powered. There are other ones out there that have dual core processors. According to Amazon, mine will be here on Monday. If its not up to the task, I might try one of the other ones which have dual core processors.
Ok, so it came early, and I was able to get it hooked up. I have been playing with it for awhile, and my initial impressions are not good. I don't know if it is lack of oomph with the processor, or terrible software, but this thing is barely usable for my needs.
I did download the googletv remote app. It works pretty well. Occasionally, it loses connection, but overall it works fine.
Initial setup is pretty painless. After getting everything up and running, I downloaded netflix and hbogo. Neither work very well. Netflix takes a long time to load and there is terrible lag. After a few minutes, it seems to get better. Because the app is made for tablet/phone, it doesnt work nearly as well with a tv, because of the lack of a touch screen to scroll with. It becomes an exercise in patients to get what you want on this app. The search feature works just fine, but for general browsing, it really isnt very good.
HBOGo is much worse. With big series such as the sopranos, it overwhelms the unit and things almost completely freeze up. There was no way to select any episode because of all the lag. I did a movie to load, but the resolution was subpar and the video is choppy. I have full bars and the Favi is right next to my router. HBOGo works flawlessly on my phone or tablet, but on the TV, it is really bad.
I love the idea of this thing, but i don't see me holding onto this unit very long. It really is a slow pile of junk at this point.
Unfortunately your experience sounds exactly like mine. I am wondering, hoping that the XBMC implementation may do a better job as it may utilize few resources

I'm wondering if something like this might work better.

Upon reading more about the one from laptopmag.com, it comes rooted out of the box. and apparently although it cant reach 1080p resolution natively, some have been able to do so with custom roms, and being only 5 bucks cheaper makes it alot better. Thanks for those links!

720p is good enough.
I am looking at the last link I posted. The MK802 III. It has a 1.6ghz processor where the first link is only 1ghz.
Edit: Just saw the mk802 II on amazon for $37
I should have looked at reviews before I bought this thing, what a pile of crap... It's really terrible, so damned slow. I don't remember even my OG Droid being that slow at 1ghz, and it only had 256mb ram... I'd love to see it rooted with overclocking and CM10.1...
Ok, I've been playing around with this thing. I disabled all apps and processes which aren't necessary.
Stock Browser is terrible. I downloaded Opera and Chrome and they work better, but not great.
Youtube app works really good. No lag, high quality video and sound.
HBOGo is terrible on this thing.
Netflix takes a little time before it works, but it seems to be pretty good. After the videos load (which take too long), it has worked pretty flawlessly.
I uninstalled googletv app once my wireless keyboard came in. The googletv app worked ok, but was buggy. the wireless keyboard works much better.
Its still a little disappointing and a little unstable, but with some tweaks, it might be OK in the future. They have released a rooted access build. The bootloader is locked, so this will limit development. Because this thing was so cheap, I might hold onto it. I have been debating keeping it and hoping it gets better, or sending it back and buying MK802III. I have until the end of January to send back, so I will continue to play with it for now.

Well I just picked up the mk802 iii from Amazon for $69. The 1.6ghz proc. and 8 gig of storage. I should have it tomorrow. I will let you guys know. I could have gotten it cheaper but I didn't want to wait for it to ship from China.
