Just to start off the problem I am having is prevalent in all 2.1 stock sense hero roms. There is so much keyboard lag in the sense messaging app that it is pretty much useless. You really can't type the way you want too. Considering I use my phone pretty much for text messaging and music, this has destroyed my opinion of the phone. Sprint was so excited about this phone and gave up on it within 7 months. Considering all contracts last for 2 years (if you want the good upgrade prices), don't you think it would be the ethical thing to do to keep a phone updated for at least that duration. This is a $500 dollar phone that can't text message correctly.
Alright after my ranting now down to the problem. I feel like the #/160 character counter right above the send button is the issue causing the terrible keyboard lag. I rarely do texts over 160 characters so I really don't need this. I remember back in the day of my touch diamond, there was an .xml mod you could do to eliminate the character counter which sped up the texting perfectly. I have no idea how to go through all the .xml's and .pngs of the apks but I figured someone in here could help. Basically I want the character counter to be removed to see if this is the problem. I do have only prediction on, no vibrate or sound, and it still lags out of control. It happens on every sense rom I've tried (and trust me I've tried them all). This does not happen in any of the AOSP based roms such as Cyanogen and Aospmod with the stock android Mms.apk, where there is no character counter. I tried pushing that to my phone an I like it but it just doesn't match up with the rest of the sense, plus it doesn't have the message counter option on the icon which i really like. I pretty much came to this conclusion when i used both of Zen's ports, Aria and MT3G, and I had absolutely no lag when texting. Both roms have different framework i understand which doesn't allow me to push either of the MMs.apk's from either of these roms to my hero stock 2.1. I am using IcedHoneyBun with Zens' any rom Kernel right now but it happened in NfinitiFX's rom too. ONCE AGAIN I NEVER USE VIBRATE OR SOUND so please don't mention that as a fix.
I am posting the Mms.apk below. If somebody can help me I would be glad to donate.
you might want to post this on android central, Beezy420 build icedhoneybun, and he might be able to fix it for you. Although i blieve hes mostly developing for EVO now, he is still around. Post in his honeybun thread.

I know beezy built it but it has nothing to do with the rom. It has everything to do with the stock sense Mms.apk. More hero users use xda than any other site thats why i posted it here.
I *highly* doubt that a simple character counter is causing the delay. First of all, that only makes sense if the keyboard is *completely* lag-free in all other "known-good" apps.
Handcent's text messaging app also has a character count... have you tried that app?
Can you type without any lag in a basic notepad application? Make sure you have all of the same auto-correction and spelling options enabled.
HTC MMS is laggy as hell!!! This isn't "the fix" but it should help somewhat. Turn off ur notifications and auto-retrieve in stock MMS then go into your stock app manager under settings~~>manage apps and force stop Messaging. Now download either Handcent or Chomp from the market cuz they r pretty much the same. Then remove the stock messaging shortcut from your desktop if u have one just so it's outta your way. A good portion of the lag should be gone. Clocking ur cpu higher if u use a clockable kernel will help reduce keyboard lag too.

I mean my keyboard is lag free in any other application except ones that require per letter searching such as google search. I just feel like getting rid of the character counter would help a great deal just because you are absorbing a but of memory after ever letter you type. I really don't know what is the cause. I don't like chomp or handcent i've tried them both. Not as much lag but there is still some lag. I just wanted to see if this was the problem and then go from there.
I would love for someone to pull the counter out of the HTC mms app. I will also gladly donate.
...still willing to donate...
Not possible. I'm using a GSM port of the Legend 2.1 build, and there is no 160 count at all, and it runs no better/worse than the older one. (The only reason it loads faster is because I'm using Zen's Any Kernel)

Except, this doesn't make much sense. MMaybe I haven't used a CDMA ROM in a while, but I distinctly remember the HTC Messaging app always being a bit sluggish.
You should try swype its great and quick as hell! =]
Has nothing to do with what you are saying. My brother has a Droid Eris with the same messaging app and its flawless. Maybe ours will get fixed in the update rolling out

Roughly three weeks ago I decided to take the user interface library I was working on for Android to the next level in the form of The Seven+ Project. Myself, along with a number of other talented developers, are working on a suite of applications for Android using this user interface. Ultimately we are working to have this suite efficient, fluid, and interconnected. Do continue to check in on these applications as more features get added and bugs get fixed. We are always looking for feedback and bug reports. So check out our applications and our website and let us know what you think!
Unlike past initiatives we are a cooperative organization composed of independent developers, who, when using our using interface retain complete control over their applications. We are also about more than just copying; the PLUS in Seven+ is all about adding more features, customizations, and more.
Also a note to developers: we are looking for skilled developers that have made applications previously and want to adapt them using our user interface. Pretty much any standard application is fair game, so whether you have an email, calendar, set of widgets, or something else, if you want to make an application using our please contact us.
Links to a few of our applications:
- Launcher 7 by Timo Kujala
- Seven+ Calculator by Thomas Barrasso
- WP7Lock by Sami Musallam
- ZPlayer by Temitayo Odesanmi
- StatusBar+ by Thomas Barrasso
- Messaging7 by Omkar Deshmukh
Also follow us on Twitter, Google+, and check out sevenplusandroid.org.
Looks GREAT so far. I'm a fan of WP7-styled apps and I think this is a great project.
Thank you!
Haha ok so I don't know if you have any idea if what's going on but I downloaded the lockscreen to check it out (pretty cool btw) but went back to widgetlocker and everytime I press the home button it comes up with all my home apps and then I select one and I set it as default then when I launch a diff app and press home the ssame thing pops up. Its like the defaults keep getting cleared for some reason. Any idea what's going on?

In which way are you affiliated with the guys of WP7Android.com ?
@HearthC0re The closest thing to an affiliation is that some of the developers (notably those of ZPlayer and WP7Lock) are now part of our project. We are a collaborative organization of independent developers using a common user interface library that will hopefully make its way into a number of applications.
@dodgersrgood I suggest you send Sami Musallam an email as he is the developer of WP7Lock. His email is [email protected]
@xriderx66 Thanks, glad to hear it!
looks like an interesting project. keep it up
i think that you ought to offer a free version of your UI demo so that you can build some momentum support for your project. I think the windows phone UI is great and I would like to see it thuroughly baked into a rom, not just sitting on top of cm7 or something. Keep up the great work and I would encourage you to keep the community up to date with developments.
Also, there are some grammatical problems with your website.
Good luck!
@SimianJones I am not too sure about a ROM as we have neither a developer who knows where to begin, nor the honest desire. The problem with a ROM is that it would reach so many less people and require that one be built for each and every device. The UI I am building uses the Android SDK and is designed to work well with any application. While a ROM would be nice, it would have to be in the distant future when the UI is more mature, bug free, and when we find an interest in building a ROM.
Phew, that is enough of that. As far as updates, will do. We have/ are working on a better blog, our Twitter, mailing list, and more to keep those interested up-to-date.
I like the launcher but how do you add more homescreen?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I tried out the launcher and I like it. It does pose some problems with larger widgets. The launcher gives size options of one or two tiles. This squeezes 4 by x widgets making them harder, sometimes impossible, to use. For example, I can use BeWeather by using a larger font size in that widget's settings. I cannot use PocketBreeze because it cuts off the top of the widget and makes everything too small to see or tap, even with the large font.
I also noticed Launcher 7 pretty high on my list of app using the battery. I don't recall seeing my launcher high on the list, if at all. This is with a custom AOSP ROM, Gingerbread Deck.
This looks promising.
This looks like a great project. Keep up the good work
@Vertig Thank you!
@scottjb The developer of Launcher 7, Timo Kujala is aware of most of your concerns and working to fix them. With each update he hopes to use less memory and battery. He has also told me that he is working on a way of fixing widget sizing and such, but I am not sure how. Just pay attention to the updates and if possible purchase the donate version which gets updates earlier.

I just discovered that you all merged in this sevenplusnadroid project. Really nice to read. I eventually bought Launcher7 Donate 2 days ago so I could have latest update after using Free for a while.
Besides, I have battery drains and reading Launcher7 posts, some say it is, so I guess I found the culprit... but I won't stop using it (I made my own full WP7-style themed ROM including MMS, Notes, WhatsApp, Camera, Phone, Contacts and Calendar, although just themed them of course, so also installed Launcher7 and won't let it go).
Anyway, really waiting for the rest of your WP7 apps!! And you have my help here, although I think you all know much more!

Most probably, we don't have the same phone, since this isn't a specific phone's thread. Mine is a LG Optimus Black with NOVA ROM → WP7 Style
Just get any ROM you want and spend days and days theming it
I even made a WP7 keyboard (which looks MUCH more real and gorgeous than those "android wp7 keyboards and keyboard themes" that are published. But it's based in a paid app so...

Thanks for the response. I did purchase the donate version and am using Launcher 7 now. I look forward to the development of these apps.
how bout a good wp7 contacts app
Certainly looking for a developer who would want to work on a contacts application, but none is in the works currently.
This looks awesome. Very excited about this project. Played with launcher7 a bit
Thanks to everyone working on this.
Hey, great project.
But I'd like to request something.
Something, that every theme and project to resemble the Windows Phone 7 style.
A decent SMS app.
The only thing I found that resembled the style pretty good is this theme for MIUI:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1174126
which also themes the SMS app.
But, well, you need MIUI for it.
So, please, consider doing a nice SMS app in the style of WP7. We really need it.
Hi guys,
Since the AOSP ICS builds I noticed that when the Phone app is not in memory it opens very slow. The next time you open it is almost instant. I thought that it would be fixed in the OTA, and even if it is a little faster it is still quite frustrating sometimes. Tried many roms/kernels and even if in some configurations it open faster, it is still slow.
Since I dont use the Phone that much, almost every time that I use it it is not in the memory and it is slow. Anyone has an idea to fix it, like a hack to make it persistent in the memory?
Thanks.
Bump. Is there a way to keep it in memory ? Maybe giving it a special permission like the launcher will help. I will take a look...
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
This is my only problem with ICS - I've tried a few memory management programs to see if I could keep the dialer, or contacts, persistent in memory, but nothing works. When I launch the dialer, the application 'Contacts' ('com.android.contacts', which seems to be the new ICS 'People' app) is shown as an 'active application' in my 'SystemPanel' app off the Market, and as long as that stays as an active app then the dialer usually re-launches straight away when pressed the next time, sometimes with only a small bit of lag if the screen has been of for a minute or two. When the 'contacts' app is shut down by the system, I guess when you open other apps up that need memory, the dialer lags again.
All the time, the process 'Phone' ('com.android.phone') seem to be sitting there as an 'Internal System Process' and seems to be persistent, but that alone doesn't make the dialer launch quickly, the 'contacts' app needs to be active as well.
My observations, but I am not a techie.
actually i recently read a thread here on XDA that addressed this issue. it involved a command on the terminal that allowed you to prioritize certain apps. too bad i can't seem to find that thread anymore!
found it! it involves using the Renice command. you can run it as an init.d script
or demo it out using the prioritzer apk (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224125) kind thanks to this developer for creating the app. it works great!
all i did, was set the phone and contact app to -20 priority. it loads MUCH faster... try it and report back.
here are more links related to renice

Great, thanks for coming back on this, this sounds interesting - I'm not rooted at the moment, I will look into doing this as I think it would be worth it just to sort out this problem, as well as the other benefits. I will report back with my results!
I decided not to root in order to fix this, I've gone a different way with the dialer - exDialer has a polished looking ICS theme and I installed that to see how it would work, and it works great. It opens up consistently quicker, maybe due to the 'Keep in Memory' option that it has. I haven't had one laggy episode with it yet. Most other third party dialers don't look so good but this has a great ICS look, has smart dial, and a great call history function, and it's free (or you can donate as I did). Worth a look for anyone having similar problems.
I would still go back to the stock dialer if it worked properly, maybe a future update will solve this without having to root.
Hi guys,
an old thread, but i would like to now if there is something new about the "bug" that the Phone app opens slow if it is not in memory.
I'm new to the nexus s and running the newest skank Version.
On my Desire S the phone app opens much faster .
Cheers

One thing to keep in mind is that the Desire S has more RAM.
Mine opens up instantly however. Have you rebooted after installing the rom?
I remember on GB it was instant! On ICS it is indeed very slow. Hopefully JB fixes it...

Same here if not in memory, i can easily notice certain lag on ics roms on my phone, when opening certain apps.
Yeah i did.
Hm Sounds like i have to live with it, or does someone have an alternative way to Set the priority for apps. The one mentioned earlier does Not work for me.

Thanks for the suggestion to try exDialer. The phone lag was really irritating me and this did the trick. With ics dark theme, it's a perfect complement to bugles beast. Hopefully this will be fixed in 4.1, but till then ...

Hi,
This is my first post and I just recently updated my phone to the new Sky Ice Cream Sandwich rom. First off I thought this was a great rom and it is... problem is I experienced a few bugs I was wondering anyone could help me out with. First off I keep switching to the text input to swype in the settings but after a while it switches off to the Android keyboard or the Ice Cream Sandwich keyboard free that came with the rom. Second thing that keeps bugging me is that I like to have my music playing with full functionality of the phone but when I clear my ram it shuts down, It has never done that before. If anyone could help me with these issues than it would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Keyboard & language and change your keyboard to swype. Set you taskiller or whatever to ignore the music app your using. More than likely in the app settings also neither are really bugs more of gripes your title is misleading

I was talking about the main task manager. Not a app like advanced task killer. You can't call out certain app to not clear
A. i have a serious pet peeve about the names of these threads.....the rom you are on is NOT ice cream sandwich....
B. why do you think you need to clear ram? free ram is waste ram....
I was wondering if there was a way to get all widgets to be availible on an non-stock launcher. I am using the Nova Prime launcher, and widgets for Samsung's S-Planner are not showing up in the list of available widgets. Anybody know a way to get full access to all my widgets, on this launcher (I don't have any plans to switch to another launcher)?
(The device is unrooted, if that's relevant.)
If you figure anything out please feel free to share, I've been trying to get my ****ing swidgets to work with now for a long time

I believe they only work on the touchwiz launcher, even if you have touchwiz installed.

I guess our best bet, is for all of us to keep messaging Samsung, until they recognize that enough people want this capability, that they should work at getting it to happen. Another, that comes to mind, is to seek out a ROM, that could allow that compatibility.
For immediate purposes, I imagine that some app developer(s) have discovered this royal pain of incompatibility, and was smart enough to realize that:
A) Very few people actually keep the launcher on their devices as stock
B) Samsung is undisputed as the current most popular Android-device manufacturer, with the highest number of users & sales,
So they released what would pretty much be a clone of these Samsung apps, but with more universal compatibility to other apps. I will browse the market when I have the time. I will, and ask that other users do as well, post the best/most similar/user-friendly/useful/blah of these finding.
otherwise, we may have to set the stupid touchwiz as our default (if we prefer and wish to regularly utilize Samsung's S-planner & other launcher-picky S-widgets) and have the touchwiz default homepages remain relatively uncluttered, except for these widgets, obviously. Then put in an app icon to switch to the launcher you actually prefer most.
OR
I just did a search in the google app market for "launcher switcher". There seems to be a semi-decent number of apps to help make it easy to toggle between the use of 2+ different launchers. Again, no time for me to test them out at the moment. Will also try to report back with anything promising... this is getting to be an annoying obstacle. lol.
If, like me, you mostly just want to be able to be able to keep on top of your S-planner to-do's, & don't have a great need for that apps menu that pops out of the side when you take out your S-pen, then change the s-pen settings, so that S-planner appears whenever the pen is detached.
I just remembered I could change it. for me this is GREAT because I never used that pen-apps popup. Also, I have really bad A.D.D., alongside O.C.D. . The result is that I constantly do ocd things, like put a lot of time into making detailed lists of things to do for the day, and set a stopwatch counter to track how long a task takes me to finish, but then I Always get distracted to the point, that All the time i put into countless overboard ocd attempts to keep on top of things, become completely worthless, because I have great difficulty keeping up any platform consistently. I feel like Sisyphus, rolling the giant bolder up the hill, and having it always roll back down. Anyways, on my Note tablet, I use the S-Pen more often than I use my finger, so for me, This works well.
