Hey guys I was wondering if the camera on the phone is made out of gorilla glass as well? Cause im thinking of switching to a fourth case if the asnwer is that it is not. Has anyone experienced any scratches on the lens so far?
No... Why would it be?
to protect the lens inside, and also so it wont be scratched. DUUUH lol. But I have no clue if it really is.
its not. the only phone that i know of that does have it is a nokia because of its 12 megapixel shooter.
Nope, sadly it is not even glass, it is plastic!
I had mine in my pocket for ONE day and started seeing little scratches.
I was going to call SAMSUNG and ask what it was made of but if you take something (a coin?) and GENTLY tap on it you can tell that it is plastic.
I imagine one could purchase a tiny little pane of glass somewhere and mod this... if mine gets many more scratches I might give it a try!
Thanks for letting me know! Just gotta remember not to put my keys in the pocket with my phone haha. THis camera is pretty good to have scratches on it.
Yep its daaam goood!
Ive had my camera "protected" for a few weeks giving it a nice cleaning and then applying a little fragment of that plastic sheets that screen protectors are made from(basicly i just bought a random transparent screen protector and cut off a piece to match the camera).
Since i always have the phone and a bunch of keys and coins on the same pocket i decided to give it a try xD seems to work not a single scratch on the plastic.
Even tho... Maybe the camera plastic alone was doing a good job protecting the camera i like to think.it has double protection... Haha

Does it decrease picture quality? I might just try this!
Not likely - Gorilla Glass probably has optical qualities that make it inferior for a photographic lens.
Scratch-resistant lens coatings do exist (such as Pentax Super Protect coatings) but it would be unlikely to see these in a phone camera.

No it doesnt change the quality if the cleaning before putting the cover sheet was wel done...
yet it sometimes comes.off while getting the phone in and out of the pocket.. Im wondering if its actually useful xD yet i wanted to give it a try hahah

Yup.... Luckily for me there is a lot of glass over the lens and the scratch is just below it so it doesn't affect my taking of pictures...

The small 1/2" by 1/3" or so plate fell off my battery cover. It's the piece that has "8M" on it and covers the lens. Looks easy enough to repair but I've never tried it on a phone. Should I just glue it back on? What would I use for that? Thanks.
I just super-glued it back on. No problems since.

I'd super glue it... I leave mine off and actually cut all the plastic off within the cameras area to make it look better and now I have no glare or sun flares in my pictures... the plasticy glass lens just makes it dirty and images greyed out.

PM me I have extras. I'll give you one.
Mine actually fell off today, i plan on super-glueing it also..

Appreciate it man, but I had the part, just wasn't sure how to re-attach. The superglue seems like it's working, though I could have cleaned it up a little better lol. At least nothing got on the camera lens
Should I remove the protecting thing on the camera of the nexus 5 or will the camera get scrached?
The glass underneath the plastic is recessed so should be OK. That said, you can buy screen protectors with camera covers too.

The lens is also fairly durable and does not scratch nearly as easily as the screen.
Last, a lens needs to be very scratched up for it to have a significant impact on your pictures.

if you have no need to use the camera, you dont need to take it off. but if you do want to use the camera, take the darn thing off! it wont get scratched very easy, believe me. i probably take more photos here than anyone else, on a daily level, and not a scratch on mine. been using since new years. and those screen savers with camera covers, they reduce image quality. personally, im very anal about the quality of the images, and anytrhing that covers or "protects" the camera lens cover will reduce image quality, no matter if it says it doesnt or someone says they dont notice.

I imagine the lens scratches really easily but luckily its actually underneath a layer of glass.
As a keen photographer myself, I only partially agree with the link. Probably wouldn't matter on a device like this but as a general rule it would.

Good job. It would just fall off eventually.
Also please remove the IMEI sticker from the back. Some people think it has a purpose or isn't removable for some odd reason.

I don't see how taking photos would scratch the lens =P I think it's more of being in your pocket or leaving it on the table with no case on. Also, as OP found out, the plastic has a center opening for the actual camera and only covers everything around it.
@ OP After I RMA'd my phone I kept the plastic on there. However, after getting a dbrand skin that came with a lens covering, I used it to replace the plastic. A lot of skins now come with them, and as @rootSU said you can order transparent ones that probably will stay on the phone better.
Just changed to the z3 from my iphone 5s. After one week of use I see that I have alot of tiny scratches on the glass that covers the camera. On my Iphone 5s i have not a single scratch after a year of usage.
Anyone else having the same? I dont want to use a large case covering my phone, but the quality of my pictures matters a lot. Tips to preventing this to happen? Why is it happening?
Edit: Sorry, wrong part of forum. Please move.

It s simple Smartphone cannot take care of itself you should be careful where to put it
iPhone 5s also have these kindda problem cause I experience it myself (lots of scratch on camera, back and front
there is small circle protector to just put on camera to prevent scratches (it doesn't effect on pic quality cause it s completely visible) and usually these protectors ships with screen protectors
:good:

Not really true as it deeply depends of the glass quality...
I've got a Samsung S4, took it with me on my Asia trips. Water, sand, rough handling, carrying it with lots of other stuff in the backpack.
NO (!) scratches on the camera lens.
Z3: Scratches on the glass backplane after one day of cautious use, crack in the display glass after listening to loud music for some time, rendering the touchscreen defective. Crack starting at the upper speaker which causes strong vibrations of the phone.
So it seems Sony doesn't care much about using quality glass; might be the same with the camera lens.
same problem with z3 camera scrathes.

me and my brother have the same problem, after only 2 weeks of use, both phones have the same problem, the camera glass looks very bad! so for me it's clear a material problem. Too bad, becuase the z3 it's really nice!

I don't and I bet the majority of people also don't have these problems. I don't look after my phones either.
The things you describe do not "just happen" as a result of "one day of cautious use" and screens do not crack from listening to music on the pathetic quiet speakers.
Might just be the oleo-phobic layer, which got damaged. Some LG G2s also had that. Rare though.
Try taking a qtip and rub toothpaste on it, it will buffout the scratchesand look brand new, happened to my htc m8
Herei would like to share my experience, i noticed the same problem while agi, normally don'tuse fone camera alot, but noticed lately that it has gone rubbish, search on youtube and different forums everyone refer that toothpaste thing and some even told me about nail polish remover, before starting with the cure it came to my mimd why need clean my hands first before i start cleaning my camera lens, while i was usinghand wipes bought from local shop i attempt ti clean my phone too, accidently i rubbed it on lens too and i noticed they weregoing smoothly i rubbed it gently and yaayyy its gone without doing anything else,
So basically only need a hand wipe to remove those smooth stains from lens, only precaution be gentle to your device.

I have recently got a little scratch on my camera lens as well, i have look up on the internet and people say use toothpaste to remove the coating that is easily scratched. But I don't think i want to remove that layer of coating (if Z3 D6603 has that coating). Then I found the displex scratch remover, i wonder if this will work on the scratched Z3 camera lens. The scratch is very minor and does not affect the photo quality, but I just want it to be fixed.

It may also be the anti-reflective coating.

Indeed. It's still like new.
But if it comes to the Z3, any scratches of the camera lens might improve the picture quality as the Z3 has the worst camera I ever experienced over the last few years.
It's nothing but a shame.
Have a look at the attachment - that's NO JOKE; it's bitter reality.

Took phone out case today to just kinda clean off and noticed that the camera flash lens had a ton of scratches on it,anyone else notice or have this problem?any does anyone know if it's even made out of glass, wouldn't think glass would scratch that easily, my phone been in case and use holster since I got it.
Never got one scratch on my lense, must be a defective lense cover. I have mine in an otterbox and it's fine.

Thanks, just spoke with someone who repairs them, they said the HR sensor lens is made of plastic, just a heads up.
I probably did it from wiping it clean today..smh.
A scratch has 0 effect on either the flash or HR that's probably why they opted for cheaper plastic than Gorilla glass like everywhere else covering essential components like the screen and camera lens.

My note 5 had a clear plastic film over the lens and flash that did scratch easily.
Looking at your photos I think yours might to - look at it closely and I think you will see the edge of the film.
Try to carefully remove it using the corner of a credit card or similar plastic item.

Unfortunately I took that plastic film off the same day I got it.. thanks tho..
Did anyone notice that, unlike the GS6 and other Galaxies before it, the S7 and S7 Edge don't have the plastic film that covers both the camera and heart sensor lenses when you first got it? Some people take them off when they got the phone, but I left it on there on my GS6 to protect the camera lense from scratches.
Just wanted to know whether someone has noticed this on their phones as well?
U are anyways suppose to remove them.

That plastic makes photos you take worse because it reflects lights to the camera in a way that it is undesirable. You bought a phone with a fantastic camera. Why would you leave a thing like this attached to it?
Besides, the camera glass is Gorilla. Heart hate sensor is a cheap one. And if you use any kind of case, you can put your phone on the table and the camera glass will never touch table directly.
Enjoy your phone. I know it is not cheap, but it is just a phone.

Even if it did have that plastic on it and you left it on, it'd get scratched up pretty quickly. If you wanted some kind of protection though, you could try d-brand skins. They cover the glass on the camera lens, leaving only a small opening for the aperture (although I don't know how much "give" there is for the OIS function), but that could still get damaged. Personally, I just have a case, front screen protector and that's it.
