This is strange. I have an unbranded bought sim free HTC sensation here in the UK which Im using on the 3 network and I dont have the option under network to set it to gsm only. I thought this option should be here on an unbranded handset, and its there on my old Desire which was also bought unbranded sim free when Im using that on the 3 network.
Is this normal on the Sensation? I know the work arounds, but Im more interested in why the option is missing on my handset.
Cheers
I may be misunderstanding the problem. Have you just tried switching Mobile network off. Menu > settings > wireless & networks > and untick the Mobile network box. Or I have the HTC mobile widget on one of my home screens to do the same.
yes, I think you misunderstand.
There's no problem with mobile network and I can turn that on/off anytime from either settings or with the widget.
I'm talking about manually switching between WCDMA and GSM, the setting comes under settings>mobile network>network mode.
On an unbranded handset you should have 3 options:
WCDMA
GSM
WCDMA and GSM auto
I dont have the GSM only option which is strange.
I know the workaround where I can enter a code and set it from there, but I'd still like to know why its missing from the settings menu. It was there on the Desire, does the sensation not have the option under settings?
Cheers
PS It comes in handy to have this option in case your out in the sticks and it keeps auto switching between 3G and GSM draining battery, in these circumstances your better off just switching to GSM only until your back in a built up area.
Well.... it's there for me.
Bell phone on the Telus network.

Aaaah now I understand
I have a UK unlocked Sensation (with O2 SIM) and I have the three options listed. And I am 1.45.401.2 with build number CL125597 release-keys.
If you have Battery Monitor Widget Pro, you can get into the detailed phone information by hitting the tests button. So that will save you a lot of dialling. Mine is set at WCDMA preferred. There is no option for GSM preferred, just GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). Not sure what the PRL stands for.
I have the same problem, I cant see the "only GSM" option
I had this option available in my old htc legend using the same sim card I am using now, so I think it is not a simcard problem...
I have tried several roms and the "only GSM" option is not available for me in any of them...
My guess would be vodafone is doing something, at least for htc sensation in spain, a couple of friends have the same probem

You have exactly the same build number release keys as me, so it must somehow be interacting with the sim card. Which is strange because it doesnt do this on my Desire. I do have an apk for a free copy of the latest version of battery monitor widget pro, I might take a look. For now the option is only there if I dial that code with the 4636 numbers included in it.

Yeah that does work ,cheers. Is there any way I can force the option to show under network mode though? Its easier if its there, and im puzzled as to why its not on a non carrier unbranded handset.

All the battery widget app does is save you dialling the number - you get exactly the same view.
Same issue
Hi there
I have the same issue as the OP. HTC Sensation, uk stock firmware. Used a vodafone SIM in it for 4 months, all (WCDMA/GSM Auto | WCDMA only | GSM Only) options were available. When I put a 3-UK SIM in the phone, the "GSM only" option is not present. So it's obviously something specific in this model, that listens to an instruction from the SIM to hide the GSM only option.
3 do this because they have to pay Orange for 2G calls/texts/browsing and they want you on their own WCDMA network as often as possible. Unfortunately the phone will sit with a very poor 3G signal, making it useless for calls rather than switching to the much stronger GSM signal by itself.
Thanks for the solution with the *# code, it has saved me from rooting my phone
Lol. You guys are funny. How do you expect to have gsm only option if 3uk is 3g ONLY? Obviously sensation doesn't offer gsm, as it's not available. Orange roaming is disabled at many areas, so no available 2g is detected whatsoever.

tinky1 hit the nail on the head... three dont have a gsm network and only supply UMTS enabled sim's the phone reads this and removes the option.. just leave it on auto and when out of range the will move on to the available partner cell sites agreed with orange for gsm and tmobile for umts
yep that seems to be whats happening. The point is though, this doesnt usually happen with unbranded handsets and is a known feature of Three branded handsets only. My unbranded desire doesnt remove the gsm only option, neither did any of my previous handsets bough unbranded and sim only. If this is a new feature by htc its unwelcome hehe.

Hi guys!
I bought my Sensation from Vodafone, Italy. It was unlocked, but branded. The problem is, Im using the phone in Romania and neither before, nor after debranding it, I am not able to receive 3G signal. Please help!
Have you checked you have the APN's for your mobile network?
Thanls 4 answering dude!
I don't have a data plan, but I know that 3G signal should be displayed regardless of this. I have debranded it and installed this stock ROM: RUU_Pyramid_HTC_Europe_1.45.401.2_Radio_10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01_M_release_208857_signed
Does that U I have bolded has anything to do with the signal?
No, I don't think so. You should get 3G regardless of what radio version you have.
Check you have the correct APN set up via this: http://www.htc.com/help/uk/howto_iframe.aspx?id=52432&type=1&p_id=399
It should be something like Vodafone PAYG WAP or T-Mobile Contract WAP.
I don't have a data plan. It should still display 3G, event without a data plan, right? What could it be?
I assume you have a SIM card inserted? If so, what network is the SIM card?
What network? Like, what provider? Cosmote Romania.
And my HTC is a Z710e model.

Yep, that. You need an APN to connect to the 3G network.
Please try follow these instructions and then reboot:
- Press Main
- Select Settings
- Select Wireless and Networks
- Select Mobile Networks
- Select Access point Names
- Delete all APN's in this section.
- Press Menu
- Press New APN
- Enter the follow settings one for General Data . The other for MMS

I'm not sure if it would have helped, cause in order to connect to 3G I don't only need to set my phone, but to be allowed to use the network, too, which is done by the provider.
My other phone didn';t need an APN in order to receive and display the 3G sign.
Incorrect settings...
Maybe I did something wrong, assuming that I don't need to have activated a data plan.
Ididn't really understand the last line "Enter the follow settings one for General Data . The other for MMS". Where do I make this modifications. I have created an access point as in your example, but how about the MMS one?
Thanks for helping dude, I really appreciate this!
Bottom line: without a valid APN, the phone isn't able to connect on 3G (like voice and video call?)

I see!
The instructions were taken off this website: http://www.unlockit.co.nz/mobilesettings/settings.php?id=153
I didn't think you'd need the MMS settings so didn't quote them.
Without 3G you should still be able to get voice calls and texts but no Mobile Internet.
If the APN didn't work I'm not sure what the problem is to be honest. Usually when people report 3G not working it is just an APN that needs tweaking.
I see.
Well, my question was: Must I have a data plan for 3G signal on HTC Sensation?
I can call and text, but I was wonderring if I could initiate a Vido call too.

No, you shouldn't need a data plan for 3G signal.
You should be able to Video call over Wi-Fi but not over 3G.
Then, that means I have a problem, or I only need to create a valid APN?
Sry 4 bothering dude, but this is my first Android phone...

If your 3g network is turned off, because you don't have internet plan, 3 g icon is not showing up. Only signal bars.

Hey there . On a site i found different APN to create:
Cosmote
Hope it helps.
Guys, thanks for everything, but I managed somehow to find the answer by myself.
It seems that my phone was connected on 3G, but the 3G icon only appears when data transfer is made. If there is no data transfer involved, the phone still connects to 3G, when this network is available, but the 3G icon is not displayed.
If you want to see what kind of network is in your area, just go in dual mode network ( Settings> Wireless & Networks> Mobile network and from the Network menu, choose GSM.WCDMA auto, which is the default setting anyway) and then check it in Settings> About Phone> Network> Mobile Network Type. Here, you should be able to see HSDPA or EDGE, or whatever.
That's all. Cheers!
So we all know there are many settings to play around with under the 3845#*850* menu. Under LTE there is a setting to select what LTE band you want to be on. I learned the hard way, DON'T touch those. Your phone will be on whatever band you select and will not switch bands automatically. I can't seem to get it back to the way is was before even with a factory reset so I;m just warning you guys.
Did you get this resolved?
I have done this on my VZW G3. Did you get this resolved? I selected b4 and b13 and now I that I see you'd thread I'm wondering if doing this will lock me out of the new Qualcomm band unlocking using QPST.

Yes I have found a way. This is with the d850 model so it may be a little different
1. Download the application Shortcut master found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.shortcutmaster.lite
2. In the application, press the menu button and select "secret code explorer"
3. Look for the option that has "com.lge.hiddenmenu.updt.UnitedDebugToolReceiver" and press it then press explore
4. Next look for RAT_Selection with the description under it as "com.lge.hiddenmenu.lte_only.RAT_Selection. This one is about 60% of the way down the menu. Don't get it confused with the one that says wcdma in the description.
5. Once that's launched, Select Wcdma or CDMA only. Wait for it to connect, then select LTE only, wait for it to connect then select the multimode option of whatever network you're on (AT&T: GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto VZW should be CDMA/LTE auto)
6. To confirm no specific LTE band is selected, back out of that menu, then scroll down to "BandSelection" Do not go to "LteBandSelection" it will give you the wrong options. Once in the menu, it should say none selected and you should still be connected to LTE.

On my ATT device it would stay on the band you selected only and wouldn't automatically switch between them.
edit: try going to "com.lge.hiddenmenu.kddi_only.NetworkMode" change your network mode to Gsm/WCDMA then to LTE only then back to LTE/GSM/WDCMA and it should reset whatever you may have selected in the other menu.

I have followed all of the instructions that you posted to fix the problem, but when i tap on lte only, a message box comes up that says failed, sane with automatic. When i tap gsm or wcdma, it says success. Any ideas what might be going on. Any help will be appreciated!!!
Here is the screenshot, sorry it took so long. Any one that I hit that contains LTE in it comes up with this fail message. The only ones that will show success are wcdma and gsm. Thanks for your time!!!

Scared the **** out of me... (Fixed)
I accidentally selected one of the bands, and it wouldn't automatically switch anymore. I have to say I have an unrooted D855. I came online to search and scared the **** out of me, and nothing I tried from this thread worked. I happened to stumble upon a thread teaching how to enable LTE on some G3 devices using this menu, and they said settings only last UNTIL REBOOT. So came my hope:
FIX: Just reboot.
Verification: I selected some band that has no 4G network at my location, 4G disappeared. rebooted. 4G appeared. Problem solved. Not sure why it didn't work for TS (maybe TS is rooted), but worked for me (unrooted).

Hi, first sorry for my bad english and this is my first tutorial
soo! lets start!
recently purshase a samsung s5 from verizon and i see the specs the lte bands are compatible with my network here in mexico(telcel)
soo i put the sim in the phone and he only takes 3G and H+, i go to options to change network mode and.... the problem is there no option for GSM/WCDMA/LTE, only Global, LTE/CDMA and GSM/WCDMA and for that reason dont use the band 4(1700/2100) to use 4g
i loocking for tutorials and no luck, i try the Phone Info menu(*#*#4636*#*#) and menu not pop up like other phone i have, thats why i make this tutorial to have 4g data for gsm networks and the most important you can make phone calls without change to GSM/UMTS or something like that
FIRST OF ALL I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BROKE YOUR PHONE FOR NO FOLLOW THE GUIDE
i have rooted with rick's rom v20 nk2 firmware i dont know if this work on other rom, soo let us know if this work in other rom or fimware BUT YOU NEED ROOT
if you have enable already the hidden menu then you can skip to step 2 if not follow step 1 to enable
1.you need to enable hidden menu: this can be done be modifyng in text editor with a program like root explorer, the file from this directory -----> /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu file
like i said with a text editor open that file and change OFF to ON and save, reboot the phone
2.when the phone fully reboot, open the phone app and dial this --->*#27663368378#
with that you enter in the servicemode
3.in service mode Select: [2]UE SETTINGS & INFO, then [1]SETTING, then select [2]SYSTEM, then [9]NEXT PAGE and then select [7]LTE BAND ON/OFF, then [2]LTE B4 ON/OFF, and finally [1]B4 Enable, need be selected like the image below:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
then restart your phone
4.now its fully reboot open the phone app and dial again ---->*#27663368378#
enter in servicemode again and select [2]UE SETTINGS & INFO, then [1]SETTING, then [1]PROTOCOL, then [2]NAS, then [1]NETWORK CONTROL, then [5]PREF MODE SET, and finally [7]GSM_WCDMA_LTE_ONLY and wait for the magic
when yor restart your phone says no service and pop up the menu dont service and tells you to change to global mode please cancel and wait for reception! if you change to global or other mode you need to do again the step 4 to put again in GSM/WCDMA/LTE ONLY
THATS ALL!:good:
NOTE: I WAS PLAYING IN THE LAST STEP BEFORE [5]PREF MODE SET IN THE [1]NETWORK CONTROL MENU, I CHOOSE [4]BAND SELECTION INSTEAD OF [5]PREF MODE SET, SOO IF THE STEPS DONT WORK LET ME KNOW TO ADD SOME EXTRA STEPS IF NEEDED

its not only 1700/2100 LTE, when you make a call the phone automatically change to 3g umts
thats why call GSM/WCDMA/LTE
with this you can use verizon samsung s5 like others gsm phone 4g
*#27663368378# doesn't take me to the Menu? Is there another way?
How do you set it back the way it was? Or how do I turn off the GSM stuff. All I care about is better Verizon signal.
Once I did this, my signal has been bouncing back and forth from full bars down to 3. Any idea why?
Any help in order to add the lte band 4 to my S5 duos sm-g900fd , I need because I use T-Mobile while I am in US.

When I make these changes it still drops me to 3G on calls. Not sure what the deal is really. Was hoping for 4g/calls at the same time.

Try switching from sim use to nv use. It's in the service menu under rtre config.
The phone supports LTE Bands 2,3,4,5,7,13,17 and 20. I'll post back
Tried and so far, nothing stops my phone from dropping to 3g when making a call. Also, some of these changes cause speedtest.net app to think I'm about 5 states away from where I actually am. Switching back, it puts closest server back to Indiana.....
I am using T-Mobile on this phone so not having to have my phone drop data to make phone calls would be great. I wasn't able to get this to work, but would be interested in knowing if others on T-Mobile can get this to work.
Thanks

Is doing this the same thing as what 5.0 does in the mobile network settings? I upgraded to 5.0 previously and it switched one of the settings to GSM/UMTS/LTE which it was previously GSM/UMTS.
Does anyone know if running a custom ROM will resolve this issue?
Does anyone know if it's possible to enable Verizon voice cdma band on a gsm/LTE (t-mobile) model s5 ? Or is the hardware in the sprint/Verizon models truly custom?
I tried this on my g900v S5 running Ricks Rom. Step one change off to on resulted in soft bricking with reboot having a toast pop up saying systemui has stopped. Touch ok and it goes to the home screen then same pop up loops back to lock screen over and over.
How to fix?
In recovery-advanced-file manager, when selecting the efs file, nothing is in it to edit and it only shows "up one file" or something like that.
What should be checked under "mount"? There are checkboxes for Micro SDCard, Internal Storage, Data, Cache and system.
Thanks

no such settings exist in safestrap and there is no getting in any other way
I'll gladly stand corrected if I am wrong about safestrap settings
I Just flashed my F350L to D838 rom to get a clean experience from all the Korean apps and everything is perfect but no 4g LTE option . The dialer codes do work but its annoying doing that every reboot.
If your device is rooted then install Build Prop Editor from Google Play Store https://play.google.com/store/apps/...editor&pcampaignid=APPU_1_6N8ZVrkTx5FolN-TiAM.
Open it and in the search field type telephony so it will find a line called ro.telephony.default_network. Open that setting and instead of default value (I suppose it's number 8) you can put 10 or 12. Save that change and than reboot your device. You will now have LTE in your network settings. I hope it will work for you...

Its not staying its switching from auto to gsm I need it to stay on auto
Go to mobile network settings and set GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto and then activate mobile data option. Exit and don't enter the settings again because if you enter it will change this option to GSM/WCDMA preferred for some unknown reason. 4G is working and you can easily disable and enable mobile data now from notification drawer. But don't enter the settings! I know that this is not permanent solution for this problem. It's anoying to me too. But it's little bit better than typing those dialer codes every time...

Hello AndroidBrick, stumbled onto your site while looking for solution. I am Nigerian and I use an LG G Pro (D838, 32GB). Some days back i noticed that i had no network on my phone so I tried inserting another sim into the device and still got the same result but other devices around had network coverage. I changed the network mode to GSM only and got 2G but WCDMA only gives me nothing. I have tried other sims on GSM only mode and got 2G but when i change the mode to WCDMA only, i get nothing at all. Have also put it to GSM/WCDMA auto but keeps giving me just 2G network only. I have even had to downgrade the OS from android 5.0.1 to 4.4.2 as suggested by a friend and still got the same issue(NB: this happened after I received a notification form LG to download an upgrade of about 54MB). Decided to manage it that way as I went on looking for solutions to that problem but with no luck and then the bluetooth and wifi stopped connecting. Please, what should i do? Any other information you would need from me, please I will do all I can to provide to you. Thank you in advance.

You can send me information to [email protected]. Thank you
My F350L and D838 have strong LTE signal but when I tried opening a web site, it does not open and get the message "You are not connected to the internet."
What seems to be the problem and how can I resolve that issue?
TIA
Just got this phone and I cannot figure out how to do this. I can only set one as the primary sim.

Yeah just realized that, fixed
I think one of your operators blocked that function. I'd try changing sim slots. Verizon to sim2 slot and t-mobile to sim 1 slot.
This is the menu I have:
I have an unlocked s22 ultra and neither sprint (with tmo sim) or Verizon are giving option for esim at all so I'm stuck with just physical sim slot

Rip well I've tried setting t-mobile as first and then Verizon as first, both do the same thing. This wouldn't make sense. I know that if I run Verizon first, they block the *#0011# so I run the t-mobile sim first

It's actually a regional thing. For some reason, the U/U1 firmwares use this crappy "Primary SIM" menu instead of the usual SIM options.

Did Verizon say why? I currently have an esim with Verizon on my P6P. The average support rep didn't know how. I had to DM Verizon Support on Twitter to get someone who knew how.
North American models do this for some bizarre reason and I hate it. I had a thread where I mentioned this and never found a fix.
(Mine is a Canadian model)
I just spoke with Samsung support. After first trying to tell me I had to call the carrier, he says it doesn't support two sims at the same time. You have to switch between them. Bringing back to Bestbuy. What an utter disappoontment.

As a workaround, if you install the Google dialer app, you can pick which one to dial with by default. Basically I set the sim card that I want to use for data only as the primary, use google dialer to use the other sim card for voice calls.
The only real pain point now is texting. It wants to use my primary for texting by default. Have to remember to switch it if I am texting a new number or an existing one where I have not received a text yet on the new phone.
Really still sucks. I've seen screenshots of it letting you use one for data, another for voice and text. It sucks that they would give us less flexibility. As it is, I am likely going to return this. Between that and the camera (P6P is better), it just isn't worth the price tag.
You can buy the dual SIM international version for HK. It's the same hardware (it's not exynos). And it has the individual control per voice / data / messaging. But you won't get true 5G (you might get fake 5G on TMOB where it says 5G but it's only part of the bands required). I had the s21 ultra version.
I have US version of the phone and have the same problem: it's only primary and non-primary. Primary is responsible for all: calls, messages and data. I chatted with Samsung's support. He said he's going to inform dev team.
Does anybody, somebody, have a new info about this situation?
Is there any workaround?
The biggest problem with messages: to download messages I have to switch to my physical sim of my carrier.
This is one of those dumbass Samsung insane decisions that will make me get rid of this phone.
Coming from Pixel 6, dual sim management is a pain with S22. How I kind of work around this scenario below....not optimal but will do for now.
Data SIM: T-Mobile esim (Primary)
Call/Text: ATT physical sim
Text messages: I used native Samsung Messages app (Google Messages app requires you to switch on MMS, annoying)
Call: I went into Contacts, edit a short list of my favorite numbers to default to ATT. This set all calls to ATT for those contacts.

Question for you. Can you receive calls and texts destined for your ATT physical SIM while having your primary sim set to the eSIM? This is my biggest stress. I dont want to be out of touch just because I'm using an alternate data SIM

YES !
you can receive calls and texts from both numbers !
when you make a call, it will give you a prompt to select sim1 or sim2 (esim).
and when you wanna sent a text, it has a sim1 icon on the texting area, if you want to send with the phone number on sim2 (esim), you just switch to sim2 icon.
