i like to modify the zip files by removing certain apk's from system>apps folder that i don't use before flashing the rom. my question is related to the DCSImpl.apk and DCSUtility.apk...
i always remove apk's related to the Stocks app cuz i never use it. i was wondering if those 2 apk's are related to Stocks and if they're safe to remove?
I was wondering the same thing about these files. I found someone that removed them with no problem. I just did the same.
It would be nice to know what these apk's did, but I want to get rid of as much bloat as possible.
thanks
Scott

why is it that they are installed onto data/app as a zip file?
this confuses me sooo much how does it work if they are zip and not apk!
humor me with enlightenment pleasee ^_^
apks are zips with a different name. For serious. When I pack up my version of a theme into a file that needs to be called framework-res.apk I simply zip it with no compression and then rename the file.
yes ive actaully done a little theming myself and i understand that, but what i wish to do is uninstall some of my applications and edit them to change the default icons, i have success with the apks of regular apps but i cant do it for the paid ones
it seems that in the data/app file they arent apks at all! they are zip files
and after i have edited them on the computer and re zipped, named, and signed them, i still cant get them to re install,
the purpose of this is to change the default icon and no i do not want to use bettercut because i am using ahome and its not compatible

Hmm that's a good question. I have yet to change default icons, so I'm of no help. Sorry :-/
yeah, well its actually not that hard to do as long as you repack and sign it, that is, only for the apps that are not paid, but the paid apps on the other hand are another story completely
anyone?
I have noticed this as well, it seems that the .zip files in the app directory are protected. You will find the .apk in the app-private directory.
Hope that helps.

do you know how to do a restore for the LG Ally with this system dump?
if so, how? i've been looking and googling for days and this file has been the most helpful in my search for my missing files, i just need to know how to restore the phone cuz i reaaaallllyyyy messed mine up with deleting important things.
Ally apps from dump
I'm on a nonrooted Captivate using Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine, and have also tried Droid Explorer, neither can install any of the apps from the dump, does anything need to be done to the apk files before they can be installed?

I'm sure the Ally dump isn't de-odex'ed? To get these to work on another Android phone you need the odex files as well (apk and odex) and than they can work. As of right now the dump can only work on that particular phone, in this case the Ally.
EDIT: I was looking forward to this too. I want the clock/weather apk
I know it's a bummer huh, can't find too many good alternatives to these official widgets and programs, a lot of 3rd party ones work OK but they just don't feel as clean.
OP, can you get the odex files plz? That's the only way we can get these to run on a non Ally phone.

there is an odex file for every apk file in the app folder of the dump, if that's what you're looking for. like the weather widget you and I were both hoping for there's the apk for it "clockweatherwidget.apk" then an odex "clockweatherwidget.odex" right next to it. Forgive me if I'm not being of much use I'm just now venturing away from windows mobile.

The .odex's are included. Could you elaborate?
I have only been able to get two Ally app's functional on other phones. I had to resign them, they are Socialite and Divx Registration. Both have been posted in other threads.
I think the clock/weather widget will only work with the LG launcher.
i am new to android, but i read that you can open .rfs files with magic iso...and its true...
i have a question for experienced mooders... if i delete some files from .rfs, will the firmware still work?
i want to delete (as a plan...) from system.rfs
1. from apps:
TouchWiz30Launcher.apk & odex (i dont like touchwiz)
Dualclock.apk & odex (i dont need it)
SamsungWidget_FeedAndUpdate.apk & odex (i dont need it)
2. from media:
bootani.qmg & samsungani.qmg (i think ...no ani at boot => faster boot)
shutdown.qmg (a few seconds can save a little battery)
please help me to understand better...thanks
I cant answer your question directly, but perhaps offer an altarnative partial solution. check out titanium backup, requires root but will allow you to remove system apps. I would be wary of removing touchwiz though, just use another launcher, I like zeam, but there are others like adw, and launcherpro and helauncher, lots more in the market most are free.
im more intereested in using the stock one, i want to bring my samsung as close as possible to the stock android, and remove the useless junk that samsung put there,
I'm debluring my US Froyo rom and there are some system apps that I want to remove completely. My question is if I remove the apks, should I also remove the odex files that they are associated with. I'm learning how to develop on Androids (Mainly my Defy but have friends that want me to clean up their phones) and a detailed explanation would be awesome.
Another question would be if I'm just renaming the apk, what should I do with the odex: leave alone, rename, or remove. And why?
PS: the original /system/app folder is completely backed up is I decide I want that app later
There are several people wanting to get the HTC keyboard working with the Eye Candy AOKP ROM.
The dev has removed the lib files needed for HTC.IME.apk to work. Does anyone know exactly which lib files are needed?
I don't need a download, just the file names. I can pull them from another ROM.
Thanks in advance.
