Hello,
i want to buy a new smartphone. Currently i am down to these 4 devices:
HTC Desire
HTC Desire S
Samsung Galaxy S
Samsung Galaxy S Plus
I like to be able to tinker and learn how to develop roms for the phones.
I liked the Desire S, but i hear many complains about the wifi deathgrip. Is there any fix to this problem?
A friend has the Desire and I tried it and i find it a very good phone, also I couldn't find any complains about wifi signal etc...
About the Samsungs, the lack of custom roms concerns me, especially for the SGS Plus. Also are there any reports of poor GPS performance?
What's your opinion about these phones?
either of the SGS/+ have better screen that the other 2
other than that, functionality and feature they are just about the same
there are tons of support for both phones
Thank you for your reply.
Any more opinions?
I am leaning towards SGS, but I have second thoughts about GPS performance... Is there any fix?
sgs plus all the way it's fast & smooth as with gps fix i think you need to find a rom for that as the gps was corrected on the nexus s release.
I have a Desire and love it but the lack of internal memory sucks, just under 150mb, so you will fill it up quickly. I rooted mine and installed LeeDrOiD 3.0.8.2 GB with an extra Gb partition.
If I were you I'd go with the SGSII or one of the newer HTC such as Sensation or Desire HD.

Right now its probably the HTC Desire HD. The Galaxy S awesome but it's riddled with bugs and Samsung still haven't given ud an official froyo, but the hardware is simply amazing

Amen. Desire HD FTW.
i think galaxy is better than htc hd. but samsung should really work hard on their upgrade and other bugs.
HTC Leo
Is it´s capable of boot Android and WM
If only Android I would choose Desire Z
It's your own opinion realy ...
But yeah Desire HD ftw
I would also say the Desire HD.

Have to agree,
(very) Large screen, capable of running
WM6.5,
Android 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 & 2.4 (sort of),
WP7,
MeeGo and
Ubuntu.
Now who can beet this....
only downside is the lack of RAM on EU model..
I believe that you should ask yourself two questions.
1- how much money I'm welling to spend.
2 - wich characteristics must the phone have.
And then pick a phone from the available ones

For me Personally, I absolutely HAVE to have wifi calling on my phone due to the crappy signal I get in my house, 2 doors up or down I get 5 bars and full 4g, but in the house I barely get edge and get 1 bar that comes and goes. With that being said T-mobile is the only one that makes wifi calling on some of their newer android phones. I presently own the Mytouch 4g witch I love, but If I have a bunch of cash I'd run out and buy the G2X, that looks really sweet.
Enjoying the HTC Incredible S, but I'm drooling over the Atrix and the new Charge from HTC
using lg optimus 2x with cm7
it's really fast
another vote for desire from me!
I would say anything BUT the LEO(HD2) if you do not want to change the OS. I've had the hd2 for a while and I truly despise the bugs in WinMo 6.5 ...the features are well intended but it just does not operate well after using it for a while. Android on the LEO/HD2 is fantastic though and the screen size is unbeatable.
The G2x, Nexus S are the best phone because they aren't skinned and offer and a pure Google experience. If you want a used phone then nexus 1 or the Motorola Droid for its keyboard.
Even though the HTC Desire is getting on a bit now, it's still looking good as news even though I use it heavily everyday. Running the Oxygen Mod so it's using one of the latest Android versions, Gingerbread (2.3).
There are a cool new Android phones around this year such as the LG Optimus 2X since it's dual core. The Sony Xpheria Play looks interesting too since it's designed for gaming.
I can see why but I think the Galaxy S is SOO undervalued it's not true.
With 4 inch Voodoo Color, you get best screen for now with tweaks. Obviously, without voodoo color, the SGS II 4.3 with Super Amoled Plus would win the game.
As far as SQ is concerned, again, Galaxy S with Voodoo sound, Galaxy tuner/DSP manager and powerAMP, it's up there with Sony and Cowon DACs which in my opinion as an audiophile, it absolutely great since I don't like carrying two devices.
Adding onto this, the ROM devs with CM7, MIUI AND sense as well as optimized Samsung ROMs which have NO lag at all, the only flaw in my SGS is the build quality. Actually, quality isn't so bad, it just feels cheap because it's too light which in this case is a bad thing.
Oh btw, codec support is amazing and I may be wrong but is one of the best in terms of codec support as well.
Come on people, SGS all the way if you want all round phone (Or Nexus S cuz it's basically the same now.)
Galaxy s II
HTC Inspire 4G FTW!!!!
The G2X or Nexus S are good to go...or a used phone like the Nexus One (Android Development phone).
Please help I'm jet another one due an upgrade can't decide what to get my mind is set on either the Samsung galaxy s2 or the HTC Sensation. I know the the Samsung is a better phone spec wise but I love the HTC set up and build quality and currently have the the new sense 3 rom on my desire and do love it along with HTC widgets. The thing I do hate is the small amount of storage the sensation offers compared to the sgs2 please help me decide.

I'd stick HTC. You'd probably get better performance out of a Sensation compared to the Samsung anyways. Rooted or not
HTC of course and then enjoy it on the wonderful XDA forum!
I really want the HTC but not sure 1GB is enough space don't want to have to keep uninstalling apps cuz the memory is full this is my only worry.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Check this active thread for a lot of scoop comparing them here
Rooted phones can move most apps to the SD card. 1GB should be more than enough internal space.
Besides, you can always try one for a few days and if you don't like it you can get the other one.
like Sumsung.
HTC, my first smart phone, give up for battery issues
Having been lucky to be able to use the HTC Sensation and the Samsung Galaxy S II
Mind you this is my own personal choice on the matter not related to any reviews being currently done.
HTC Sensation has a nicer and flowing concept feels more natural to hold and use. The mechanics of, and I agree is not on the same specs level as the GS2, but definitely well worth it.
Like most have said if you do root your phone you can easily move most of your apps to your SD. With an SD of 32gb you won't have to worry about carrying to many apps.
I on the other end tend to carry only the required apps and off time RPG's I play from Gameloft.
Either phone right now are a great buy but I'd stick with the HTC Sensation.
Cheers mate.
Galaxy S2 for me it is a no brainer. I just wish I was up for a new phone in July when it is coming
Definitely the HTC, it's just better quality and there is so much you can do to enhance the phone from rooting to flashing new roms, that storage will be the least of your worries.
With the newer HTC phones you do not need to be rooted to move your apps to the SD Card. HTC vs Samsung should not even be a comparison. HTC all day!
This is not based on a comparison but I am really liking the speed, screen and camera (1080p recording!) of my SGS II.
For me it's the king of smartphones.
SGSII is the fastest/best smartphone in the world right now, hands down.
Its not even a competition.
Thanks for all your thoughts most have given me the answer I wanted the HTC but after some serious thought I'm am still being pulled towards the SGS2. I once was a big believer that when you buy a phone you you should just be able to use it and not have to mod it for it to be useable. After having 2 HTC's the hero and the desire and their customer support not great (how long should you really have to wait for an update) I can see the same thing is going to happen with the sensation. I had to root both of them just to get the latest updates and now I am rather into the whole tinkering thing and as it stands the HTC is not rootable ( I know its coming BUT WHEN HTC) and the Samsung is ( VERY EASILY). So with much regret I'm going to say good bye to HTC and the much loved sense3.0 at lest for my 2 week trial. And if I learn to love it then hate it, it will only be for 18 months until my next renewal.

Of course HTC.
Now days such hardware like S2 isn't support by software yet.
S2 is faster, and so.....? S2 is not that UI friendly as HTC.
So I prefer HTC!
You all preffer phone you would like. But it really depends on what you want to use your phone. Productivity ? Gaming ? And now you know what you want...
Productivity > HTC
Gaming > SGS2
We dont even need to talk about it, I think gaming on HTC Sensation really Suck i had it in my hands and like me O2X still more. But i would preffer SGS2 bcuz i play Dungeon Deffenders, And every new level its more laggy So i need something really strong. But both are.. You must Choose Productivity<Gaming or Productivity>Gaming
Thanks that sums it up even more I want the ability to play more games.

Hi,
At the moment I am using a HTC Desire and I find it to be to slow and the internal storage is to small.
Can someone recommend a fast dual core phone?
I have been looking at Samsung Galaxy s2 or perhaps som 3D phone...

This. You've answered your own question.
Maybe LG optimus 2X
My wife has gotten an Atrix 4g (AT&T), which recently got a gingerbread update. It's a beast of a phone, and quite fast.
The whole idea of the "webtop" dock for it, is just ridiculous to me though, especially since it costs more than a netbook.
*edit*
also worth note, it has 16gb built in user storage and 1gb of RAM.

I loved my Desire and never thought I would leave HTC until I got my SGSII.
Man, I looooooove my phone now
Hi guys, I know I'm a little off-topic, but not that much.
I would like your opinion on weather I should get an HTC Desire for about $330 or a Milestone 2 for about $530, or even de Defy for the same $530.
I ask because the hardware specs are very similar for the three, but i Know the desire is older.
Thank you.
Thx, I Will check the spec on them...

Total thread hijack if you ask me
Samsung s2 or sensation
HTC Sensation !!! a good one.
Samsung Galaxy S2 is at the Moment the King under the Smartphones!
Or maybe you can wait a little longer for the HTC 3D EVO.
That's a really nice piece that you can feel the 3D vision without any glasses.
Cool~~~~

Sorry about that, I'll make my own thread.
As a sensation owner I would say have play with both of them ( and look through the general sections on xda), the sensations gets stupidly hot for no reason and because the antennas are in the back cover the gsm/wcdma and wifi both have death grip issues.. as far as performance I know the sgs II is the fastest and has a better more well saturated screen but if I am no mistaken also gets really hot.... thats bench marks fast but I dont see any slow down on the sensation games play perfectly and the UI with customs roms is blisteringly fast...
hard decisions for you
Oh, I see a few more people have jumped in... Still not sure what to get... I shall look around... I not to sure about the 3d... The one I looked at hurt my eyes...
Probably will keep using my desire awhile longer... Need more memory... Need to decide soon!

The Samsung Galaxy S II has the better screen, and from what I've seen it makes better pictures. Also the battery for the SGSII is better: Li-Ion 1650 mAh vs. the Li-Ion 1520 mAh from the HTC Sensation. But the differences are not that great, and the HTC Sense from the Sensation is a great UI, and if you use a custom ROM from LeeDrOiD you can get a greater experience from the Sensation.
For day-to-day usage I would get the HTC Sensation, the Phone UI is the best out there. You may find similar apps on the market that mimic the Phone UI, but it's not the same.
And until you get your new device, try a ROM that has data2EXT. This will increase your internal storage to up to 2GB. Most HTC Desire Custom ROMs have this data2EXT option. Go here -> Desire Index - Everything Desire is here!
Hey guys,
I'm currently choosing either the sensation or the inc. s as my next phone.
opinions?
- i heard sensation is a little laggy/buggy and that is has wifi issues. (i use wifi ALOT)
- also heard the sensation's screen is a bit more "washed out"
- sensation is more future proof, and has a better design overall. (imo)
- i prefer the 4" screen of the incredible, but not the back design. (maybe i'll get used to it though!)
- audio quality is important (through headphones)
thanks for the help
sensation and incredible s is both being offered at the same $0 on a 3 year so price difference is not an issue.
i'm also not interested in rooting/modding the phone.
See my reply in your duplicate thread

sensation great on wifi
my wife has the sensation. she's on wifi all the time and it has excellent wifi - range and connectivity. It is a bit so-so on actual cell reception compared to my samsung exhibit. The exhibit is great on t-mo.
thanks for the replies, leaning towards incredbile s for its 4" screen and bug/lag free os.

Go with Sensation for best support, better hardware, and more worth for your money....Root the phone and go with a custom ROM, it will most likely fix the OEM's software bugs...That is what XDA devs do with stock roms and such...
I came from a symbian nokia background. I've owned many great smarthphones like N900, N95 and many others but then Elop "#$%&@£§ killed symbian and meego. I've developed some apps and hacks for it but since the total disrespect and lack of support I want to move to android.
I don't known much about it but I want to learn so I want a smarthphone that allows as much mods as possible rooting etc etc.
I've some characteristics that are a must for me. The rest is irrelevant.
Also I'm from Portugal and I don't known the difference between many different versions, like the galaxy s II which has many different of versions, I need one that works in europe.
I need:
-video out
-memory card slot
-audio out
-camera with autofocus
-camera with flash
-5mp or more
-usb2.0 or better host/client
-bluetooth 3.0 or better
-802.11n
-GPS
I've narrowd down to this list but I'm really confused about different versions of the same model:
samsung galaxy s II i9100
Huawei U9000
LG P930 Optimus LTE / Nitro HD
LG SU640 Optimus LTE
LG LU6800 Optimus Big
HTC Sensation (HTC Pyramid)
HTC Amaze 4G (HTC Ruby)
HTC Sensation XE
HTC Doubleshot T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide
HTC Holiday
What you think it's the best for me?
The european version of the S2 is the i9100. I think this would be the best choice. Or the Sensation XE (the XE version!) if you like Htc
good suggestion but all it comes down to what is the best for a developer. the sensation non xe versions already suits my needs. no need to spend more if it's cheaper.
I'm going to check every forum for each model to see what's available.
If we consider that the SGS2 is the most sold device from the list it's clear it's the most developed

that's it. Clearly what I want. nice specs most developed meet the requirements. I checked the foruns and LG is definately a no go. Huawei is a joke. HTC has some good support but not as great as the galaxy S II and the price is higher then the better speced SGII. Still kind of expensive but I found some good deals by some narrowminded people that want sell it to buy an iphone -.-"
thanks for the help. close topic.
Meh...I have an LG Optimus LTE. Still breaking in the battery. It burns out quickly. I have only discharged and charged it once...5 more times to go. Then I will be able to say something about the battery.

Howdy yaaaa'll im from____? I too was a Symbian user, but was getting used to the clunkiness of it, and the OS was no longer. I had used Windows also. just didn't do enough. Now the Android steps right out and gets aftr it. True the/my Nitro P930 will wear down a battery with moderate use in about 11 hrs. But figure the Optimus G E970 will take care of that. After I get my Optimus, in the mail, supposedly. I'd like to root the the Nitro P930. Any suggestions/links would be greatly appreciated. I'm not a NOOB, am more familiar with using one that tweaking/rooting, flashing etc. In fact never done any of that. So try to be gentle with me.I'm here to learn.
