[Q] Can an official registered phone get relocked by microsoft.. - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When you pay the $99 for a unlocked developer windows phone instead of the chevron-method, is it possible it gets relocked again?
I've read that sometimes phones get locked again when they connect to zune.
Is this because Zune checks if the ID is registered in their database? Or is there also the possibility that it can check if you have pirated/unpayed games on your phone?
I was wondering how free a registered phone really is?
Thanks in advance

[Q] Unlocking sim card Hell

Hi there!
I just bought a SE Xperia x8. It was Locked to 3 uk.
I used a unlock online service to unlock it. Did everything right as it was in the unlocking manual. But in the end of the process the software Multi unlocking client frozed. The know the mobile doessn't recognize any sim card.
In the hiden menu the X on the network lock is not there anymore as it was unlocked.
And when I try to connect to a network the message I get is "Your sim card does not allow a connection to this network"
I rooted it changed roms and the problem persists
Can anyone help me?
The Online unlocking service wants me to by more credits and try again....
Have the same problem... any fix for this?
I just opened my own thread for exactly the same thing last night - did either of you have any luck getting this fixed?
Oh God, I remember MultiUnlocker from my Palm Pre days. What a horrid piece of software it is.
I'd recommend contacting their support division and outlining your problem. I was able to gain the necessary three credits to unlock my phone (stupid bloody thing took that many goes).
It may prove problematic that your phone is kinda 'in limbo' ie. showing unlocked but not. You should be able to input a code from the emergency dialler giving you access to the engineering menu, which will allow you to re-lock your phone, then the code should work.
I'll subscribe to the thread in case you need further advice!

[Q] Are we going to be relocked? - See Article on Chevron Token revoking!!!!

So when these tokens are invalidated are we getting relocked when we plug into to Zune? This could be bad.....
http://www.wpcentral.com/homebrew-unlocking-service-chevronwp7-labs-comes-permanent-end
This is a presumption, but I think its possible that the phone validates the certificate each time you try to access a feature that requires an unlocked phone. Therefore, if the certificate is not valid it will deny access to the feature.
In summary, I doubt there is a reliance on the Zune software to "lock" the device when the certificate expires.
I see no reason Zune cannot go access the AppHub when you plug in to see if your device is properly registered (token or not). There are reports of people on this forum that used the original Chevron pre-NoDo method to unlock that have had their phones relocked when they plugged into Zune.
My understanding is MS knows all the devices out there that are Chevron Token unlocked and they can revoke it themselves so Chevron did not have to have a expiration date coded with the token. Of course this is all speculation.
If you changed the "prevent relock" registry values (which were URLs that the phone used to check its unlock status on Microsoft's servers), then your phone will probably not automatically relock (although there is some other relock mechanism at play somewhere). In any case, even after your ChevronWP7 Labs token expires (4 months away) you'll be able to get a free AppHub account from Microsoft and unlock again (read the announcement on http://chevronwp7.com).
Im in the situation where I was originally Chevron unlocked and then later decided to get a developers account but since installing the latest windows phone tools, my phone appears to have been locked.
As you mention, a lot of us removed the URL's in the phones registry to prevent the phone from checking to see if its unlock was legit. I forgot all about this when I bought a devs account. Now the devs unlock tool will you an error 0x64 if you try to unlock the phone because the phones registry urls are missing.
I know I can solve this by doing a hard reset but I have loads of sms texts I would like to keep and can't use any homebrew apps to do this as of course as cant be deployed as the phone is locked.
My only hope now is to wait until MS provide a legitmate way of backing sms data up.

[Q] Help regarding backing up SMS data

Hi guys,
Long story short: My phone lost its developers lock and I can no longer unlock it again without having to hard reset my phone (this will restore the portal urls in the registry).
My issue is I have sms's dating back to when i got the phone (htc hd7) at launch and I really dont want to loose these. It's not an option for me to loose them.
What I need to know is if there is any way of backing this sms data up without it being developer unlocked? The reason why I cant unlock it is because I removed the Portal url info in the phones registry prior to me going legit with a developers account and I forgot to change it back. This is now preventing the phone from checking that I have a legitimate developers account.
Any help appreciated.
Do you have a backup of the phone (Zune restore point) from when you were unlocked? You can restore that, and you'll be unlocked again and still have all the SMS you've received prior to taking that backup. Not perfect, but it should work...
Odd that an official dev-unlock (via AppHub) doesn't work. My phone has the PortalURL values wiped (to prevent it from continuously resetting my interop-unlock) but the Windows Phone Developer Registration tool can still access my phone and sees it as currently being unlocked. Maybe it's becuase I first unlocked with the official unlock, then applied "keep unlocked" (the Portal reg values) and interop-unlock?
That said, to use any of the SMS backup tools you'll need at least an interop-unlock as well, and if your firmware version is too recent that's not currently possible. Even if you previously had WP7 Root Tools installed, you wouldn't be able to run it.

Dont Know Phone Pin? Help to reset phone?

Hi, a family member passed away a few months ago and I was given her phone by her sister to use if I wanted. She had the phone and charger, and thats it. I stay in the UK and the phone I use is on O2. The phone she had was the Experian L but she had her phone through a contract with virgin media.
When I initally put my sim card in and turned the phone on it said 'virgin media, this phone has been reported lost/stolen'. In order to unclock it from this security lock I needed her insurance company(through virgin) to provide me with a 4 digit pin to unlock the phone. This was very hard to get as the insurance people are different from virgin media, but after a while they agreed to give me the code if I sent a copy of her death certificate in. I did this and got the code thankfully. I was told that I wouldnt be able to use my o2 simc ard in the phone because the handset was locked on Virgin. I was told if I paid £15 I would receive the unlocking code through the post in a week or so.
I did this and got a letter through the door with the instruction on for to unlock the handset. Basically its a 16digit number that I enter and the phone become unlocked. However, after all this Ive just realised I think there is a phone lock on the phone i.e. a pin she must have set herself? I think this because when I power the phone up without a sim, all I can see is the date/time, with her name underneath, and also underneath that is a keypad. When you press any button on the keypad and hit enter it says wrong pin? That happens without a sim card so I presume it is a phone pin lock she had on her phone is that correct? If so, is there any way around this? Ideally I would like to keep whatever pictures etc are on the phone however I realise that might not be possible. Ive tried to download the sony suite however it wont allow me to use the suite because it tells me on the computer I must enter the pin on the phone to continue! bit of a nightmare to be honest.
Any help/suggestions with what I can do? Many thanks
I cant unlock through Pc Companion because Pc Companion needs the screen to be unlocked before it connects the device, and I cant do that.
factory reset
Hello, do a factory reset to the Phone, but you will loose all the information on it

Does "Unlock the Bootloader"... Unlock the Phone?

Hello, XDA.
I bought a Moto e 2020 Unlocked (Renewed) thru Amazon, and it's apparently Not unlocked.
When powering up, it shows "Xfinity Mobile".
A search in this forum found threads that tell us how to unlock the Bootloader.
Is That what I want? What is the Bootloader?
Will That procedure then make the phone Unlocked, so that I can activate it on RedPocket?
Thanks.

Hi, unlocking your device leads, unfortunately, to the lost of your guarantee once you have a problem with it. So, my advice would be: not unlock it. Kind regards, kuzibri
Thanks for the reply, Kuzibri, but I Think I'm not worried about the Warranty.
This is a Used (refurbished) device.
Will unlocking the "bootloader" allow me to use it with another service provider?
AFAIK, your device is connected to a specific provider and unlocking it does not allow you to choose another provider, but only allows you to downlaod, f.i., apps that are not allowed to be downloaded from the app store or gives you the opportunity to install a different ROM on your device. Kind regards kuzibri
Really?
Unlocking it will Not allow moving service to another provider?
Gee... I thought that's usually the Purpose of unlocking these devices.
As I already said, unlocking a device does not allow you to switch to another provider. The main purpose of unlocking is to download apps that the Store refuses or to install another custom ROM on your device. If you want another provider, you have to switch from your current provider and choose another one, which, in general, also means another SIM card and if you're lucky, the new provider lets you keep your current phone number, otherwise you will get a new one (rather disturbing IMHO). Regards kuzibri
Hello~ if you're looking for a new service provider, then the 'unlock' you're referring to is probably the network lock, which locks your device to certain network provider/s. So i suggest you search in that direction. regards.
Well, Thanks, Fjildeth, for that clarification.
Apparently there IS a Difference between unlocking the Network, and unlocking the Bootloader.
THAT was my original question.
Yes, I want to make this new phone usable on a network other than Xfinity.
So, unlocking the Bootloader will Not do what I want... correct?

Yes. unlocking the bootloader is a different matter, and isn't what you're looking for. I suggest you go search for 'SIM lock' topics. there's a lot of guides regarding this. Hope you'll find a way.
If you want to make your new phone usable for a network other than Xfinity, then the solution lies in the SIM card corner. Each SIM card is coupled to a certain provider. If you put your current SIM card in another device, it will still be the Xfinity network and not another provider. Alas, you will need another provider with the accompanying SIM card to switch from network. And indeed: "So, unlocking the Bootloader will Not do what I want... correct?", this is correct.
Yes. Unlocking the bootloader will trigger a factory reset that erases all device settings, user data, third-party applications and associated data from the device's hardware storage.
If your bootloader is unlocked, you will be able to root or flash custom ROMs. But keep in mind that there is a reason why every Android comes with a locked bootloader. While locked, it will only boot the operating system that is on it. This is extremely important for security reasons.
Unlocking your bootloader is not recommended if you don't want to install a custom ROM on your device. Bootloader protects you from various data theft attacks and provides security features.
