Issue with wakelocks? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a nexus s 4g. Just got it about 5 days ago. Needless to say I've been flashing roms like crazy . I've finally settled on oxygen 2.2 for the time being, But I have noticed the past couple of days that my battery has been draining like crazy while its nothing use. About 3-4 % per hour. I downloaded better battery stats and noticed that I have partial wakelocks in wifi in the android system of about 26%. I'm on the stock kernel for oxygen, and haven't changed anything else. All my apps are the same as when I was on other roms. Has anyone else experienced this and if so is there a solution? Maybe flash another kernel? My wifi sleep policy is set to never...which has never caused me any problems before. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here's a pic of what the battery looks like.

Do you use any apps like widget locker? I use oxygen but with matrix kernel and i don't have this issue.

No I don't use widget locker. I use a handful of Widgets, but they are the same ones I've been using for a long time and never had any issues with them. I turned wifi off for a while and rechecked my battery stats and low and behold none of the quite frequent wakes that I had before. Ill try another kernel tonight and see if that helps. Which version of matrix are u using?
From cellblock D

So one or many of your apps is set to sync every 10 minutes. I bet it even has a setting to check for a wifi connection.

So here's where I'm at now. I reflashed a different rom, and kerenl (deck 1.3), and only put gapps on there. After a few hours, I'm still getting wakelocks from wifi. Is my wifi radio busted? Or is this some flaw in one of the stock apps. I guess ill go through each one if the stock apps and see if there's a setting I'm missing.

[HACK] UPDATED **WIPE ALL** flashable zip
Well I have tried to reflash the radio, and checked all my core apps and can't find any reason for it. Does anyone have the zip that's in this thread above. I'm looking for the one that does the complete wipe that wipes boot and everything. I figured I'd try that to see if it helps. I guess my last chance after that would be to flash the newest update and try that radio to see if there is a difference. Thanks.

Nevermind. I found the zip....

Yeah. I always have it set to never. Though I did change the settings, and still no dice! I used the complete wipe to see if that makes a difference. Ill try it when I get home in the morning.

So nobody has ever heard about this problem. Am I the only one that's having this issue?
Well I'm going to try the one click back to stock to see if that will help anything. Wish me luck!
From cellblock D

I just started having this problem too few days ago. I tried flashing different roms and kernels, nothing helped. But today I disabled sync with gmail and seems to be alright now.

Ill give that a try and see if it works. I successfully one clicked back to stock (2.3.4) and made my way back to my current rom. Ill try the no Gmail sync when I get home on the morning. Thanks for the advice.

I give up. I can't find out what causing this issue. I've turned all my syncing off, removed every app possible, removed all Google apps and I'm still getting these wakelocks from wifi. I'm going to my sprint store to see if I can swap my phone out, get a refurb or something. Glad nobody else is having this problem, cause it driving me freaking nuts!

Is the wifi wakelock happening when at home on hour network? Could be your router.

Nope, sorry... I've never seen this issue

Well I got a replacement from sprint. They were pretty cool about it. Good news :getting great battery life, mediocre news :wifi still doing its funky thing. It must be an app or some setting in the core apps, though while I'm still getting the wakes, my battery isn't draining hardly at all while on standby. I'm doing like 1 % per two hrs! One thing I did notice though is that I did not have this issue when I 1 clicked unroot back to 2.3.4? Weird but there it is.
Also my phone was doing it at the sprint store on their wifi, so I know it wasn't my router.

[Q] Stock myTouch 4g, 100% CPU

Hi All,
I have a mt4g which is rooted with S=Off. I switch between the Sense launcher and Launcher Pro Plus. Usual apps on the phone, not too many.
For last week or so, I have been seeing that sometimes the phone gets really really laggy and Norton Util tells me that the CPU is 100%.
Also, I think most of the times, when this happens, I see a Sync icon up top. I do not sync a lot, just 2 GMail Inboxes and weather (every 6 hours). But I do see that Sync icon most of the times when this lagging happens.
I have tried removing apps, but this still seems to be a problem. I have see somewhere that turning the USB debugging to ON has helped many, but did not work for me.
I tried CM7 RC1 when it was out, but didnt like it (stock camera etc...) and I restored back to my stock ROM. Could this have done something?
Thanks
Ravneet
On your home screen hit menu key. Go to settings. Select accounts and sync. See what all is listed there. Chances are something with sense is constantly syncing.
Disable everything from syncing. See if the problem goes away. If so turn on one thing at a time until you find the culprit.
Hope that puts you in the right direction.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Have tried that. When I go there nothing is synching. Strange.
I have tried to remove all accounts from synch but still see the problem.
Went into recovery and wiped the cache about a hour ago. So far so good. Hope it stays this way.

I've noticed that there are apps that as soon as i download them, and open them that my cpu will go to 100% until I reboot my phone. System panel is a good app that isn't too obtrusive that will tell you exactly what app is doing what.
Have you installed anything new lately?
I uninstalled everything new.
Moreover I think every time this happens the battery is less than 30%. Maybe in low battery profile there are some apps which are over utilizing the CPU.

There's a couple threads like this. The stock Rom seems to have issues running rooted. Best bet would be to flash a different rom

@NicGraner: Why would the stock ROM have problems with being rooted?
I am still having this problem. Uninstalled everything that is not important.
The phone just becomes unusable and I have to reboot. Un-installed Watchdog Lite too, as I thought since it is monitoring, it is taking up some CPU in background too.
No widgets on the home screens.
I guess I am gonna do a full refresh using the PDxxx.zip and go back to stock stock and then see what happens. not sure if I will lose my root once I do that.
Try the royal glacier rom it's solid stable and the sh!t
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/stop-t-mobile-from-being-bought-by-att/.......
I returned 5 phones for this exact problem, then I finally got one where the usb debugging trick actually worked. Before that I was just using OSmonitor from the market to see when I was hitting 100% then I would have to yank the battery as that was the only thing that would make it stop.
When I got this new phone I installed os monitor and waited for it to happen again, which it did, then I turned on usb debugging and watched my cpu usage graph drop to 0%. SUCCESS! Unfortunately since this was my 6th phone this solution seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
I did a lot of poking around on google trying to fix this and found a lot of people with different results. Try disabling t mobile sync and go to the myaccount app in the market and uninstall the updates. If that doesn't work try getting a new sim card and sd card, or just keep returning phones until t mobile offers to send you a g2x...
Also if you search around you'll see that this isn't just a problem with the mt4g. I found multiple threads where this happens on the nexus one, and several galaxy s phones. I really hope google is aware of this.

@johnsmith970: Thanks for the info. I will try calling TMO tonight and see what they say.
I am really bugged by this now. The phone gets totally unusable once this happens.
They will say to do a factory reset. Every tech support person I talked to told me to do that. This didn't solve the problem for me at all. It still exhibited the same symptoms on a fresh reset and not even signed in to google.
I would advise calling htc support just to let them know you are having this problem. Sending back a half a dozen phones per customer can't be good for anyones wallet or their peace of mind.

I have no idea why the stock rom doesn't like being rooted it's just what's been said and the solution which is most widely given (and mostly worked unless theres an underlying problem) is to flash a custom rom.
OK! I have more information for anyone interested.
I am tracking processes now in OS Monitor app from Market.
Most of the times it is the bluetooth daemon (bluetoothd) that goes bonkers. I was connected to my GPS in my car while driving, and when I came out of the car...the bluetoothd is going bonkers...looks like it may be trying to 'find' the device it was connected to. At the same time logcat2 process is also utilizing 30+% of the CPU.
I turned off Bluetooth and both the processes went away
So let me see if this sticks for couple of days.
Thanks

There's definitely a major bug somewhere in OS

My phone no longer reboots itself or freezes. It hasn't now for over a week but what tends to happen is after about 2 days of use it starts to lag and slow down like crazy. After I reboot it, its again super fast and smooth.
Its almost like there's a memory leak somewhere that is causing this and maybe certain apps cause it more than others? All I know is this has happened twice now and a reboot makes a huge difference.
Also and not sure if this is related but my GPS stops working until I reboot too. I think it's some app I have on the phone that's hitting a bug in the OS and causing this.
Maybe if it gets bad enough it causes reboots like people have been having?

I had the same thing happen last night...GPS would not start no matter what I tried until I rebooted the phone then it worked fine. I agree, there certainly gremlins in this software.
Here's hoping something is coming soon (see my post about the new software update message!).
I wonder if the bug is affecting phones differently. My only problem is my dam wifi. Will not connect under any setting. When it does connect little to no data can be sent. Some else posted this also.

Agreed.. I've been following that thread.. The first clue was "some apps came up missing". Then a confirmation, and then another... and then I bookmarked the thread and decided to have some patience.
Yes good idea me too!. You'll also notice a bunch of people saying it made no difference. So not even worth the risk IMHO!
This just happened again to me. Did you have anything installed that checks location frequently? Shopkick maybe? Have you uninstalled any T-Mobile apps? I'm wondering what causes this since I don't remember having this problem before.

The only thing I'm aware of is Weatherbug, but it's been installed almost since I got the phone (I have it set to track my location).
Um...that patch doesn't patch any kernel files therefore it won't do anything about crashing.
Yeah I noticed this yesterday, navigation refused to start, and things were being klunky, a nice reboot fixed it up!
I notice after a few hours/days things like the add widget menu start lagging pretty bad.
All the more reason to hope hope hope for CM7 with the quickness.
Do you still have Telenav installed? I removed it so not sure if maybe somehow it's related.
I have Shopkick installed, Weatherbug Elite, Beautiful Widgets which I all believe use network location services although none use GPS except Shopkick.
My guess is that the network location API has a bug and crashes so that's why GPS stops working because when it stops working, the GPS can still be turned off and on and apps report it's on but they don't get any response.
I don't use GPS often enough to know how long I've been having this problem. Apart from this, the slowness over time is the main thing I've noticed.
I think weatherbug might be causing weird issues. Ever since I updated a few days ago, when I reboot my g2x and my nexus, I'll get a little box stating it cannot update my location. Altough it does update my location, lol! My GPS will still turn on though!

I have not rooted as I didn't want the restoration hassle if I decided not to stick with this phone so yes, I do still have Telenav installed. My Weatherbug (free version) does turn GPS on to follow me.
After last nights GPS failure to start, the phone gave me fits late morning/early afternoon. I had no bars with an "x" and yet had a data connection (without 2G or 4G shown) at very slow speeds. Rebooted several times and had other similar odd behaviors.
At this point, I am giving serious consideration to ditching the phone before my 20 day trial is up and holding out for the SGS2. My TW Bionix running Vibrant works flawlessly with the single exception of flaky GPS. The big problem with SGS2 is the 4.3" screen...I really don't want a phone bigger than this so perhaps the MT4G might be a better choice.
Decisions...decisions...
OK, now the re-boots are starting. My GPS once again failed to start tonight so I tried to toggle it and it wouldn't turn off/on. I also normally leave bluetooth on all the time and I tried turning it off as well and it wouldn't turn off. It finally did turn off and when trying to turn GPS and bluetooth back on the phone slowed WAY down then re-booted.

If your phone has reboot issues please help out

For those of you who are experiencing the random reboot issue on the stock rom, would anyone be willing to do a factory reset without installing any apps and testing for a while to see if they still have the reboot?
I want to find out if this issue is a problem related to specific g2x's, or is triggered by some kind of software installed.
The reason why I want to test this out is because I have gone through 6 phones(waiting for 7th), and I can not recreate this problem on any of them running the same restored nandroid backup.
Also, for those of you who have gone through multiple g2x's, have you had phones with reboots and also ones without the issue
Since it seems LG is not recognizing this as a known issue, it most likely won't be fixed in the update they announced. Therefore its up tous to try find the cause of this issue whether it is device specific or due to certain apps installed.

If it a software related issue, it couldn't be the ROM since some people have this issue on other roms. It could be the kernel but all g2x's come with the same kernel out of the box IIRC and only some people are having the issue.

It seems that people who are getting reboots, are getting reboots across multiple g2x's, while people who aren't getting reboots, don't have the issue across multiple g2x's. So there must be some kind of installed software related thing that is not playing nice and causing the phone to reboot itself. There isn't enough info in order to make a definite diagnosis to the source of the problem yet which is why I made this topic.

what is confusing me is if it is software, why is it only affecting some people? the leak is running a different kernel so that could possibly be why you aren't getting reboots, but something must be triggering it that the people who have the issue have down/installed etc.

Orrrrr...perhaps it related to the network somehow? Strength of signal or need for the phone to switch between 4G/2G? Or perhaps trying to go to the ever elusive 3g (since I still haven't seen a report of someone actually seeing 3g in the notification bar). Maybe folks with reboots are in fringe areas and the phone oscillates between 4g and 2g and doesn't like it? Maybe those folks use their phones differently...leave BT on all the time and run apps that access GPS regularly. Or any other number of possibilities.
It's too easy to blame an app.
I know that one of the barcode scanning apps caused my phone to lock up, and sometimes reboot.

Thats why I'm asking people to participate in this experiment. By eliminating variables one by one we can try to single out the cause.
EDIT: also, the 4g signal shows for both 4g and 3g. The only way u can tell which one you are on is by going to "about phone". UTMS is 3g then there hspa(+).

Mine actually rebooted randomly very often. It didn't matter what rom I had (Stock, Eagle, CM7). I tried everything.... factory resets, removed apps, etc. It's just very random when it decides to reboot. Sometimes when I'm using google maps, sometimes when I'm trying to text, or when I'm playing with an app. It got so annoying that I had to return the phone.
I noticed that the times my G2x has rebooted was when it got hot. For example, if I charge it, talk and surf at the same time it will start getting hot and either freeze or reboot. Sometimes just charging it will freeze it.
I'm trying out a new battery and so far the phone seems to run cooler...its 25.2c right now and I've been playing with the phone for a while...with the stock battery I dont remember the temperature below 27c ever...sometimes with heavy use I would see it go as high as 43c...
it's only been one day with the new battery but I'll let you guys know how it behaves the next few days.

Well android leaves apps open. There is no exit button on the apps that kills it. I religiously kill tasks and check to see what's running. Is there any type of reporting app that will tell you what was running at the time of the reboot like maemo/N900 has?
As far as I know, I have not had one reboot. Has not been a full week though. If it was rebooting in the night, I guess I wouldn't know it.
Hell, I haven't had any real probs. My Gps was way off, but I rebooted it outside and it's been dead on since.
I love my G2X.
I just got an exchanged phone due to reboot/shutdown issues. I did not install any 3rd party software, and i had a shutdown that required a battery pull while it was on the factory charger.
Not sure if I should keep exchanging until I get one that works or not...

Grey signal with x wont reconnect

I have this issue when im at work where i get crap att coverage where eventually from being low for so long and staying on wifi my phone signal goes to zero and a grey x shoes up above them.
This wouldnt be so bad but it wont reconnect with a reboot or airplane mode reset which means if i dont check my phone i get no calls or info.
Is this normal? Is there a fix?
Thanks

This is an old issue. I'm not sure when the fix happened or what ATT radio would fix it for you but there is a simple (ish) solution. Basically, whats happening is that when your phone loses signal for an extended period of time it shuts off the radio and then cannot restart it. Using NoBars will stop your phone's radio from dying like that and will just periodically poll for signal.
That will fix the issue but just to satisfy my own curiosity, on your SDcard are there a bunch of files called Radio Dump and then a bunch of numbers?
Sorry posted on my phone and didnt notice the grammar errors
Yes i have the radio dump files but havent checked since installing the F1 radio.
I will try that app since this issue has followed me on multiple roms and radios
If there was a fix i havent gotten it
Thanks man
Edit
Just installed nobars but realized its a battery saver like juice defender
I will keep my hopes up tho

you could try manually resetting your radio if that is actually the problem. just dial *#*#4636#*#* next time you're at your desk and go to phone information. if you scroll down it should say either turn off radio or turn on radio. try turning it on if it's already off, or resetting it by turning it off and then on again. I don't think this would be a permanent fix though. just a temporary solution when the problem arises.

Nobars will shut off your radio and stop it from dying. Trust me it works. My wife and I used it foe months waiting for the issue to be resolved. The radio dumps mean you're having the same issue.

I actually go into the carrier menu when i install a new radio anyway. Going in and out of airplane mode resets the radio but the problem is if I dont actually look at my phone (in my pocket) i wont know the radio shut off and can go through the day without getting any contact. I know its not the rom cause Im on stock. I know its not the radio cause I have tried about every one.
Its got to be a mix of crappy ATT service (which makes me wonder if resigning was worth this phone for free) and the nexus s hardware.
I am seeing if noBars will help. You would think this would be something google would fix ASAP tho as its happened since day one almost.

It is odd since this was a massive issue from day one of the Nexus S but that was before any of the other variants and it was fixed before any of the other variants launched. Since that fix, I've not heard of anyone having the issue any more with any variant. Part of the issue for my wife and I was that we lived in an area where there was really no good cell coverage from any company, so we stayed with T-Mo in spite of that knowing that we were moving soon to an area with great T-mo coverage, but being out of service so much resulted in similar issues as you've had: we would be constantly restarting our phones to see if there was anything we were missing. I do believe this will work for you, and I hope you find a permanent solution soon.
Thanks for the tip but i guess i am the lucky guy who still has the issue lol
Maybe hardware related? I will see what ice cs brings me
For today nobars helped but i did notice some batt drain from it but very minimal so its a keeper for now

Battery life worse since 2.11.605.5

Am I the only one who's got worse battery life since the update?
I keep my brightness set low, bluetooth and GPS are off. My mail and Twitter are set to update manually. Weather updates every four hours, and I use only a few widgets (the weather clock and a few that toggle settings). I've got a solid LTE signal.
Before the update (and even after the 2.11.605.3 Gingerbread update that I'd got before Verizon and HTC pulled it), I could take my phone off the charger when I woke up, use it moderately, and still be in the green when I'd put it back on the charger at bed time. If I used it a bit more, maybe I'd be in the yellow, but I'd never had a problem going 18 hours or so on a single full charge.
Since the update, though, my phone can't get through a day without recharging in the middle. Even if I don't use it. Just sitting on my desk, untouched, I'm losing about 11% an hour.
Chances are the phone will re adjust through battery cycles. Also there are power saving options now if you go to the power setting. The efficiency setting works very well. Other than that I would wait a little longer before going about any tinkering.
And one more thing. You don't have a task manager do you? If so get rid of it. Android is incredibly efficient on managing its ram and tasks.

LTE? You're running 4G all the time? I wouldn't make it past late afternoon if I didn't toggle the LTE off most of the time and use CMDA (3G).
I'm stock and also having horrible battery life since the last update. Like 5 hours worth of battery with little use before I'm in the yellow. I'm giving up on 4G and switching over to 3G for good... maybe that will last longer as it did in the past
I'm tempted to do a factory reset

If my assumption is wrong on your knowledge of factory resets, i apologize and i'm not trying to insult your knowledge of these phones. That being said, factory reset won't allow you to revert to pre 605.5 software, as it just wipes the data completely and you stay on the same 605.5 you are on. If you are rooted already, make a backup and flash back an older release of the software that you are happy with. If you aren't rooted, now is a good time and then to revert back to past software haha
Hmm..sounds like someone should get an extended battery.I have one and never had a problem before or after gb.

Insult not taken... I'm well aware of what a factory reset is. And I don't care to root - been rooted before. Battery was much better before... so I figure its probably an app causing the drain - not playing nice with the update. A reset could remedy that.

Unfortunately, I don't care to have that over grown tumor on the back of my phone. My battery has been fine before so I know it's possible to use the stock battery and have it last throughout the day.
Lol well suit urself.I don't kno why a lot of people hate it.I mean besides the phat ass on the back it last 16+ hrz.but Wat ever floats ur boat

Nope. Never have, never will. I'll give it a few more days and see if, as you suggest, the battery doesn't readjust.

Yep. The area I'm in (just east of Pittsburgh) seems to have good coverage. I've never had to manually turn off LTE, and until the last update, I've never had trouble making it through the day.

I'm with mdeblaz. Getting through the day on the stock battery hasn't been an issue until the update. And I'll buy a new phone before I buy a ginormous battery for this one. I've had a couple of HTC phones now, and the Thunderbolt has been the most problematic for me. Maybe I'll sell it back to Verizon and get the Rezound. If the battery issue doesn't clear up on it's own, it's either going to be new phone or (for the first time since I started using Android phones) flashing a new ROM.
Anyone know a good Gingerbread ROM for the Thunderbolt that has Sense 3? I know I'm a minority, but I keep buying HTC phones because I actually like Sense.
BAMF Forever 1.09.
You may have an issue with the camera taking pics, try clearing data from the camera app. Like having a new phone for me.

That one looks pretty good. Is LTE working in it? Is it ok to use over the current stock software? Any guides for noobs who have never even rooted, let alone installed a custom ROM?

Some advice for noobs. Read read read. Do your homework. Read through the guides and walkthroughs on this forum (mainly in the development section). Learn now to root and learn how to recover BEFORE attempting to mod your phone in any way. Learn how to setup and use ADB.

And it seem its cycling through 3g, 4g, 1x, again. Why can't HTC get this right wtf.

As killa just said do read.
Going root is probably the only way to fix the thunderbolts stock problems.
I have had mine rooted since it was rootable and I have been loving my phone. I also use the stock battery and can get over 18 hours daily with wifi on at all times, lte and GPS when I'm not home. Those are the wonders of custom kernals and setcpu . I run AOSP but I have ran sense and Bamf forever is definitely the way to go for sense.
Good luck.

I'm having no problems with data connectivity on 2.11.605.5 perhaps your area is having network problems...
