I am looking for a way to change the screen dpi (also called density or resolution) from and have it stick during a reboot. The current 240dpi is just too big and 190 looks just right to me.
I have tried a couple apps from the market (LCD DENSITY and LCD DENSITY CHANGER) and both work, but do not stick after a reboot. When I had the HTC HD2 I know you could edit the build.prop or something similar and get it to stick, but don't know if this can be done on the Nexus or not.
Does anyone have any ideas? I've used search and surprisingly found very little pertaining to changing the density on the Nexus.

you can just edit your build.prop file. its in /system/build.prop/. i use root explorer. after changing it and saving it, all you do is reboot for it to take affect.
heres a screenshot of my build.prop file, the line you want to edit has the curser behind it. and a screenshot of my homescreen and icons with the number set to 230 instead of 240..

Wow. And I thought 190 was small! You must have awesome eyes.
Use exactly 200. Its equals out a little over qhd resolutions. 960x560 or something. Someone else filled me in on his to do the math and I went from there. Trust me 200 is what you want. Anything smaller and text starts to become grainy. I worked out the math a few months ago in my epic.

Hmm. I'm using 190 as I type this and have no complaints whatsoever. Text is very crisp and the size is perfect. I changed the columns in Launcher Pro Plus to 6 and am loving life.
Oh yea. One thing. The market homescreen is a little messed up, but nothing to get in a tizzy over. I never stay on that screen very long anyway.
I tried dpi 200 and I liked it, but unfortunately lot of apps which I have installed is now not compatible
Is there anyway to fix it? Because I like 200 dpi and want to keep it, 240 is just too much for me.

Download a program from the market called "LCD Density". It allows you to make a temporary dpi change that resets back to normal after a hard reboot. Just temporarily set your DPI to 240 with LCD Density (it will do a soft reboot to apply the setting), download and install what you want from the market, then just do a hard reboot and Viola.

Edit your /system/build.prop and add the following line. Change 160 to what your want.
ro.sf.lcd_density = 160
If you are using adb
adb pull /system/build.prop
edit and make the change to build.prop and save
adb remount to mount the partition in r/w
adb push build.prop ./system/build.prop

I'm not sure about the first part of your question but I changed the density at boot by adding this to my build.prop under Additional Build properties:
ro.sf.lcd_density=120
Looks much better now and now I have even more screen real estate
This is very interesting. I am sure a few people would like to see pictures of this.
There is an app that I use called LCD density changer, it allows you to change it, with a soft reboot. I am now using it with the stock TNT 1.0.1 build. I know there are hatred of the TNT interface, but I love it when I am working at my desk.
I am new here so I cannot link it. I would be happy to send it to someone who can.

Hmmm... that might be difficult to explain on the g-tab because i believe you need root and you need to use the one from the SDK.
you can just take pictures with your phone or digital camera and upload them... im sure that would be enough to see the difference.

I changed mine to 120 as well and I like it much better. More screen real estate and the status bar isn't so big now

The icons were way to small for me and messed up some of the scaling on some apps. I am still glad that the option is there!
Call me stoopid, but I can't figure out how to edit the build prop (or whatever it's called) file. I've found it, and can open it with ES File Explorer, but when I try to save it after making changes I get an error message and it cancel's out.
Any suggestions?

Im Assuming Stock is 160 cuz thats what lcd Density for Root Tells me. I Wouldnt go smaller then 140. 140 is good but anything smaller is waaay too tiny.

You will need a program that allows you to mount directories as read and write. Otherwise it won't work. I am not sure of any free ones that are available.

Sorry to resuscitate and old thread, but Yesterday, my G-Tablet somehow trashed it's android.database.sqlite, so my planned upgrade to the Official CM7 was forced.
CM7 is great, but the Icons, the Menu Bar, and pretty much everything look too big -- and I'm an old guy that (sometimes) wears reading glasses. It looks like the Android Tablet for Pre-K.
I know I previously changed ro.sf.lcd_density, but -- old guy thing again -- I can't remember what I set it to.
The comment associated with this file also says something about Market Working properly.
Suggestions? Will changing it really keep Market from working, or will it just look "non-optimized"?
I've always used 209 on most my devices but with this enormous screen I think we could go much smaller. Usually changing the density messes with certain apps. Anyone have suggestions on the best settings that has worked for them on the TB?

@youneek, i had tried both of the lcd density apps (paid and free ones) and neither of them works on the thunderbolt. quite disappointed because the first thing i wanted to do after rooting was to change that density.

hopefully the developers are working on it. i guess i need to go ahead and be pro-active and email them about it.

pretty sure you have to be rooted to change the density? if you are not it won't.
second, I came from the evo, and I liked 185. Only app it messed up was speedtest.net, and even then it was just smaller with spaces around it. I use swype so it making the stock keyboard all tiny didn't matter to me.
You can manually edit your build.prop if you are rooted. I'm using 209 since widgets align perfect on LP when using extra columns. Might try to go one up and reboot while taking screen shots each time.

Terrible screen to show the difference lol. 210 and 185 look the same with your setup. I guess I should do screenies of mine since it is insanely different because I use Launcher Pro and not the stock launcher. Aslo apps like facebook will look dramatically different between 210 and 185.
Not trying to slam you or anything, just explaining because someone is going to ask why they don't look different.
I like sense so that's what I use... The 185 chops off the icon names... 210 is ok but it breaks the flip in the clock... Posted just to give an idea... No offense taken

LOL I didn't even notice what it does to the sense clock. I guess if you want to keep Sense you will want to not use 185.
Although changing the LCD density on this phone is very different from the Evo that I came from. The density change on the TB only changes somethings, not everything, like it does on the evo.
The thing I noticed about not setting a device to its correct native ppi, is that you won't get sharp 1:1 pixels but blurred antialiased pixels instead. Which makes sense, doesn't it?
build.prop
Using root manage i did a search for build.prop to play around (back up naturally) with the LCD Denisty. During the search i fould 2 build.props. One located /data/data/com.android.browser/app_plugins/build.prop and the other /system/build.prop... Do I need to sync the two values of will changing /system/build.prop be sufficient?

Yeah, you can say that would be the equivalent of setting a 1920x1200 resolution lcd monitor on your computer to 1900x1080 or something lower. The screen will obviously be blurry because it's not the native (optimal) resolution. It's not a good idea to do that on your computer, so I am not following why it would be on your phone.
I was wondering if anyone have ever used the LCD Density changer application in the Android Market. If so, which would be the best way to correct the issues with the dialer being out of place after the density change. I prefer having smaller text on the screen that is why I've opt to changing the density to 200 and below in the settings. I will post a screenshot of the issue I am having after the density change.

Which is the best way to get smaller text within the whole ui? I used spare parts + to make the text smaller but I'd prefer the text size to a bit smaller throught the ui.

same here, and i honestly dont have that many issues with the market doing this either.....i still get the occasional market error. but 90% of the ones i download, download just fine.
I've been using density changer, no problem. Except fire the market problem

I just hate the dialer issue. There are some other problems when changing the resolution.. Wish it wouldnt cause problems with other applications because I love how the whole UI looks when the fonts are much smaller.

Also 720p here. Using Go Launcher Ex and Go Dialer which has awesome themes...iphone keyboard also! Everything works fine and youtube videos look two or three times better. Checkout big buck bunny on youtube at different settings then on 720p and be amazed..

I use LCD resolution and have never had issues with the market
I haven't had that issue. Texts come in just fine.

what is the density that you've used?
I only just got my Tab Plus today but i have already applied a few tweaks which for me make my experience with the GT+ a little better!
Please note these tweaks REQUIRE ROOT
First off is the LCD density
I have an ipad2, Galaxy S2 and i did have a Xoom and the first thing i noticed was that the GT+ display was not quite as crisp as i liked!
I used LCD Density Modder PRO to change my density to 140 which seemed to be a lot better.
120 also worked fine but also appears to make some apps run in tablet zoom mode that normally do not ( e.g XDA premium).
Issues:
Please note I HAVE NOT TRIED THIS WITH STOCK LAUNCHER I use ADW
EX. On my XOOM , different dpi's caused FC with stock launcher so be warned.
Stock keyboard also gets misaligned, SWYPE works fine.

Touch Screen responsiveness.
This is an issue where the screen does not actually respond to touch until you have moved your finger a little bit e.g around 0.5cm on the screen.

I'm running at 130, stock browser has been fine for me, everything has worked normally with no abnormalities encountered so far. I use GO Launcher EX and its been running normally as well.
How about the phone app and other Samsung apps? Are they distorted once your lower the density to say 120?

There may be issues with the market not showing all the apps/updates on certain dpi settings other than 160/140 so im sticking with 140 i think. I havent come across it yet though ( it would say not supported on my s2)
Ive had no issues apart from the accuweather widget has some misaligned text.
I have wifi only so no phone app to test but it was misaligned on my galaxy s2 at different dpi. Hyperdroid rom fixed it though.

Looking at the 7.7 tab, I think the reason they added the extra .7 of an inch is because of the space taken up by the system bar.
I'm going to look into remapping the volume up/down buttons into back/home as it would be easier to use the hardware buttons at say 120dpi due to the small size of the system bar.
If the volume control was in the same place as the brightness slider in the notifications area then the volume buttons wouldn't be needed!
120 and the delay of the switcher(or whatever it is, the one next to home *button*) is GONE..

Noticed this today, I had to reset it back to 160, reboot and then clear Market data before I could upgrade my apps again. Resetting and rebooting alone didn't work the data reset was needed.
Changed back and rebooted again, annoying.

What dpi were you on? I haven't had an issue yet on my gt+ at 120
If you instal the LCD dpi app I mentioned above, it has a market fix. I haven't need to use it on this but it fixed my gs2

The default dpi is somewhere around 240 or so. Setting it to 160 gives you more space on your homescreen among other things. Its set to mdpi so everything takes up as many pixels as it would on a tf201, just that the pixels are smaller.

Yeah Ill never go back from changing DPI. Done it for years now but this tablet is a huge diff once its done. Your right with 160 it seems to be right. Remember everyone, you MUST install Nova, Apex first or Launcher will crash and put you into a tricky spot.
I dont think people are very educated about LCD Density. Once one changes this setting and leaves it for few days you will not go back. Its hard to understand but once you read a few emails, look at some websites its major change of your device. A waste of our great FHD screen we have leaving it default. Also if you have problems with Google Play download LCD Density Modder Pro to fix it.

I'm confused. Less dpi is supposed to be better? Thought it was the other way around? Or is it that we are fooling the system into thinking there's less pixels?

We're fooling the system to think the screen is bigger as in screen size, not resolution.
Hardware wise, higher dpi is better of course but software wise, that is up to you to decide.
Looks pretty cool. Aren't some icons (like in the text editor) too small to be pressed accurately? How about external monitor?

The screenshots are amazing, - this is exactly what i was looking for. can you please share with us a step by step on how to change the DPI on our Infinity tablets.. i would really like to do that.

Download, launch and set to 160 by sliding bar or input number value.
Reboot and done.
I'm old and can't see so I'm using 200

Loving the new dpi thread, lol quick question. Messing with dpi, does it change the way play store sees your phone? Is that why now I see on some basic apps (not compatible)

I don't know for pad, but for phone, yes, it changes the way play store sees phone.
I changed my dpi on my Samsung S2 few months ago, and since i'm not able to see some software. I must come back to the default Dpi, if i want to download them.

this is why i don't mess with dpi. that and there always seems to be some launcher/widget problems.
I just attempted this with the "pro" version, it threw up an error about not being able to find a file, then, once reboot was attempted, it would hang on the Asus logo. I had to manually re-install the factory firmware with a memory card, then re-root. This was on a rooted .26 device...possible complicating factors was I was running the weather widget and a live wallpaper on Nova.

The play store only supports 160 240 and 320 dpi values.
