Is there a way to make the Dialer automatically suggest Contacts as you are entering numbers on the keypad? e.g. John's number is 123-4567, and if I enter "456", John's name should pop up. I really miss this feature from the Samsung Captivate.
You want a T9 dialer. You can find one on the market. I prefer Go Dialer EX

The OP has modified the stock dialer to do what you want. It's not exactly pretty yet, and the search isn't perfect but if you want a T9 dialer with a stock look and feel, this is for you.

I'm looking for a sense dialer app (or similar). Basically, one that will query contacts AND the call log as you dial. Do any exist?
don't think so. but you can search for NubDialer in the market - made by Wysie. Or you can also try the dialer one. it's something quite similar to sense dialer.

Dialer One doesn't query the call log or tell you the number you are calling (e.g., mobile, work, etc.). I just checked and NubDialer doesn't either.
Re: Sense dialer app (or similiar)
has anyone found an app to do this yet?

current version of dialer one does all these things.
Re: Sense dialer app (or similiar)
the search widget does this too. as you type it searches your contacts.

This isn't accurate. If I called 1234567890 a week ago, but it isn't in my phonebook, I cannot type 456 in DialerOne and have it retrieve that record. He has thrown in a new "group by call log" which will sort the query results by most frequently called, but that is it.

Right... but again - not looking for contacts... Looking for call log.
me too.
i tried "dailer one" and its not bad. it searches for contacts while you dial. but i dont like the ui.
i would prefer something more sense like...
does somebody know where to find it?
maybe if somebody could pull it from a sense rom?
EDIT: actually the ui of dialer one is far better if you set the the system wallpaper as background.
i think dialer one will become my phone app;-)

I'm working on making a theme to sense dialer, I will make a thread for it today
As all HTC apps need & use HTC's framework, none of them can be used on a normal Android ROM. The only way is installing a Sense ROM. But as people told you, Dialer One & NubDialer are the best dialers out there.
Hey,
Quick question. I am using an incredible for a while in replacement of my X. I just loaded up CM and was playing around with it. Just a quick question about the dialer. Is there anyway that the dialer can search contacts as you type in the number or name similar to the 2.2.1 dialer on the Droid X?
Or is there any alternative dialer that I can swap in for it that has this functionality ?
Thanks in advance
Dial One or Dialer One something, it's an app from the market.
I always just go to contacts and tap the search hard button and type in the first few letters of their names
check out youlu...works great
Is there any way to port the stock htc dailer into cm or are there to many framework depedencies?

Does anyone know if the Phone.apk/Contacts.apk can be changed to work how older versions of the Dialer worked, where as you dialed, contacts would show on the screen, so you could quickly find the contact. In the newer versions of Froyo/GB, it looks like it only allows you to dial the number but contacts don't show up.
Try using Go Contacts/Go Dialer. When you dial it shows the contacts as you dial like the old version of the dialer used to do
You could also try TouchPal or Dialer One, both will suit your purpose.
I really want this too. Seems insane to remove from the stock dialer.
It would be a great feature to see incorporated into new roms.

That was never the stock dialer.
For instance on galaxy s devices its part of touchwiz

It was stock on my Nexus One... it showed whatever the default contact pic was for both incoming and outgoing calls. On G2x stock dialer I just have the Bugdroid.

The dailer on the note is not very good esp compared to htc's are there any better ones? The way it looks up contacts and allows you to set default phone numbers for people for example seems very clunky.

dialer one is the way to go. Free and the best.
Touch pal dialer is a nice option too.

Contapps and Rocket Dialler also good options.
Go Contacts EX
Go Contacts Ex is the best.

I tried several dialers, so far I like TouchPal the best.
I'm having the same issue, but how do you make these alternative dialers the default, so it shows when you try to call someone?
RocketDial is quite good as well
I use the MIUI dialer, Its called exDialer; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329172

A dialer is just an app. You need to replace your phone shortcut with a shortcut to whichever dialer you just installed.

go launcher ex nice
Was using Go Dialer EX, Touch Pal, Contapps, but have downloaded exDialer and find it the best. It's able to clear missed calls in notification and uses default contacts to adding new contacts or editing contacts. Wothte the dialers I had discrepancies between the 2 contacts databases with regards to linked contacts and edited contacts.

Which dialer allow for video call like Samsung dialer ?
How is the exDialer able to clear missed call notification? Doesn't work for me.
I vote for DW Dialer - i used to use dialer one, but it got a bit slow then i found DW Dialer (the free version does everything, the pay one just costs to much...)
Kicks ass on configurable options and does it all and looks nice on the note.
There's a little ergonomics issue with all these dialers. In the Galaxy Note stock dialer, when you make a search with the number pad, the options are listed just one line above the number pad, with a dropdown box in case there are multiple options. When you click, there's a new window that pops-up, which shows the contacts. These are all reachable with your thumb when you use only one hand.
When I utilize any other dialer, they put the matching names at the top of the screen listing them down. But I can't reach the top with single hand operation.
Would you know any other dialer with "easy reach"?
The s3 stock dialer is blazing fast,i have searched this forum but couldn't find any port to your note, so you guys please request for the Dev to take notice, yes the stock note dialer is crap, by any standards, slow n its not even optimised to your screen size

I prefer exDialer with the black theme, its free on the market so enjoy..........
The Google Dialer IMO is a mess - not intuitive, cannot edit a contact from call log, long press does nothing, can't delete individual calls and I don't use the local search...
The only thing I miss about my Samsung is the dialer and their awesome swipe left to text swipe right to call feature.
So is there anyway to change the dialer to a better one? or incorporate the swipe to call/text feature?
Loads of dialers on play store

Try exdialer, it incorporates all the swipe features.

I've never actually tried a different dialer. Is it really necessary at all?

I actually have the same problem. Is it possible to revert to the Jelly Bean AOSP dialer (and contacts)?
Try Dialer One: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.dialer.DialerOne
I completely forgot about dialers on the play store.
A themed exDialer is now my default app. It looks a little better than Dialer One though both solve my issues.
Much thanks.

1. Tap the contact picture or icon and it will pop-up the individual contact card. From there you can edit the contact or use the other contact methods.
3. Tap on any entry on the call log and it will open a details page for that call. The menu button will appear and you have the option to delete that individual call from the log.
