Change Dialer - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Google Dialer IMO is a mess - not intuitive, cannot edit a contact from call log, long press does nothing, can't delete individual calls and I don't use the local search...
The only thing I miss about my Samsung is the dialer and their awesome swipe left to text swipe right to call feature.
So is there anyway to change the dialer to a better one? or incorporate the swipe to call/text feature?

Loads of dialers on play store

Try exdialer, it incorporates all the swipe features.

I've never actually tried a different dialer. Is it really necessary at all?

I actually have the same problem. Is it possible to revert to the Jelly Bean AOSP dialer (and contacts)?

Try Dialer One: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.dialer.DialerOne

I completely forgot about dialers on the play store.
A themed exDialer is now my default app. It looks a little better than Dialer One though both solve my issues.
Much thanks.

1. Tap the contact picture or icon and it will pop-up the individual contact card. From there you can edit the contact or use the other contact methods.
3. Tap on any entry on the call log and it will open a details page for that call. The menu button will appear and you have the option to delete that individual call from the log.

Decent dailer

The dailer on the note is not very good esp compared to htc's are there any better ones? The way it looks up contacts and allows you to set default phone numbers for people for example seems very clunky.

I tried several dialers, so far I like TouchPal the best.
I'm having the same issue, but how do you make these alternative dialers the default, so it shows when you try to call someone?
RocketDial is quite good as well
I use the MIUI dialer, Its called exDialer; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329172

A dialer is just an app. You need to replace your phone shortcut with a shortcut to whichever dialer you just installed.

Was using Go Dialer EX, Touch Pal, Contapps, but have downloaded exDialer and find it the best. It's able to clear missed calls in notification and uses default contacts to adding new contacts or editing contacts. Wothte the dialers I had discrepancies between the 2 contacts databases with regards to linked contacts and edited contacts.

Which dialer allow for video call like Samsung dialer ?
How is the exDialer able to clear missed call notification? Doesn't work for me.
I vote for DW Dialer - i used to use dialer one, but it got a bit slow then i found DW Dialer (the free version does everything, the pay one just costs to much...)
Kicks ass on configurable options and does it all and looks nice on the note.
There's a little ergonomics issue with all these dialers. In the Galaxy Note stock dialer, when you make a search with the number pad, the options are listed just one line above the number pad, with a dropdown box in case there are multiple options. When you click, there's a new window that pops-up, which shows the contacts. These are all reachable with your thumb when you use only one hand.
When I utilize any other dialer, they put the matching names at the top of the screen listing them down. But I can't reach the top with single hand operation.
Would you know any other dialer with "easy reach"?
The s3 stock dialer is blazing fast,i have searched this forum but couldn't find any port to your note, so you guys please request for the Dev to take notice, yes the stock note dialer is crap, by any standards, slow n its not even optimised to your screen size

I prefer exDialer with the black theme, its free on the market so enjoy..........

[APP][2.2+]: Sweep Texting

Sweep Texting allows users to receive, view, and send text messages, all without touching their phones. It uses the proximity sensor to implement intuitive gestures: you can sweep down your screen as though you're giving permission for the app to "come" to you and display itself. An alert dialog will then pop up with the text message and you can reply to it within the dialog itself (you don't have to switch out of the app you're currently using). Then, when you want to send the message, you simply sweep up as though you're commanding the text message to "go away" and send itself.
Since the app is completely touch-free (with the exception of typing in your actual message), it is extremely useful in hands-free situations where looking at the screen and switching through multiple screens to access messages may be a hazard (driving, for instance). The app also gives users a nice futuristic feel to their text messaging experience and allows them to customize it with multiple color schemes.
FULL LIST OF FEATURES:
--Sweep down to view a text message after it arrives.
--Sweep up to send your reply back to whoever you're texting.
--Tap on your message to go directly to your Inbox.
--Supports multiple messages from different senders.
--Supports messages longer than one text message.
--Hide a message and then sweep down to view it again at a later time.
--Choose between Holo styled (ICS only) or five different dialog colors.
--Choose between five different text balloon colors.
--Toggle to disable in Landscape mode.
--Toggle to enable/disable "Message Sent" sound.
--Enable/Disable toggle so you can turn off the app's features when you don't need it.

UPDATE: More color schemes added! Check it out!

Unfortunately, the app is only available in the United States for now (due to export tax law issues). I'll be rolling the app out to other countries soon, though!
Really like this app though sadly it doesn't work with 3rd party messaging apps specifically sliding messaging (what I'm using) only seems to work with stock :-\
also can't reopen text a after dismissing..

Yeah, I could only find Intents that work with the stock messaging app when a text comes in. I'm actually working on porting it over with Google Voice and other 3rd party messaging apps are on my to-do list. I'll let you know when the updates become available.
And "Dismiss" is supposed to mark a message as read (so you won't be able to access it). If you want to be able to access a message after you view it, you should use the "Hide" button (that's what it's for). Glad you like the app though!

Are you using one of the custom color schemes? I don't think they have support for the "Hide" button (I couldn't get the dialog to accept more than one button for some weird reason... prolly an SDK bug). Try using the Holo theme. You can see from my screenshots that there actually is a "Hide" button for the Holo theme. Hope this helps!
Also, if you like the app, please consider sharing it with your friends/leaving a rating and review on Google Play. That'll help support future development of this app. Thanks!

I don't think activities can be shown on the lockscreen. The text message dialogs are individual activities so I don't think I can place them on the lockscreen. If I do find a way though, I'll implement that into the app. Thanks for the tip!

k cool, i would also like to pint out that if you are using a alt messaging app that has an option to wake upon receiveing a text enabled the app works fine, though if it wakes to the lockscreen and is in your pocket at the time you receive a text then this app wont respond to any sweeping after unlocking until you receive another text (unless of course the same scenario happens at which case you'd have to open the text normally) now if there is a way for it to ignore all sweeping over the sensor while at lockscreen then this would be fixed but as im not an app dev idk what you can and cant do, maybe something to look into maybe a waste of time idk, just the only thing that i can think of that would provide a nice work around

That sounds like a good plan. I'm looking into implementing that right now.
Also, the price of the app has been reduced by 25% ($1.50). It has also been released in most European Union countries, so if you weren't able to download it before because of country limitations, you can get it now (as long as you're in the EU)!

Also just found that under certain situations sweep texting may keep the proximity sensor on even if there are no more texts but a user workaround is to freeze the app with titanium backup or rom toolbox(what I use) or the like and then to unfreeze it will see if I can figure out what causes it or get log for you

Looking for an app: Floating dialer widget w/contacts AND DTMF (touchtone) support

i am looking for a floating dialer widget w/contacts AND DTMF (touchtone) support.
the only thing that is close to what i am looking for is Floating apps. but it doesn't support touchtone, and annoyingly, it's not a standalone app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lwi.android.flappsfull
i've also tried using Floating banners to create a widget with a dialer widget, but sizing of the widget gets really strange and unusable, and none i tried suppots touchtone.
what i want to be able to pull off is, if i am looking at a meeting with a call bridge, while i am in the calendar app;
1. open up the floating dialer;
2. open up and call the bridge number from contacts; (in my invites that i get, only an internal IP phone numbers are specified, so short of me memorizing the number, i'd need the floating app to pull up the contacts list. alternatively, it could support speed dial from the widget)
3. punch in the bridge code in the floating app, so i can still see the numbers in the calendar app in the background.
does a such app exist?
or is there a calendar/appointment app that can handle something like this?

You might want to try a combination of popup widget and simple dialer widget. Popup widget allows you to have any widget as a popup.
Or PA halo might work for you.

confused about that. is that a rom or an app???
alternatively, what would work for me is a floating 'event details' widget.
i am seeing a bunch of floating calendars, but what i need to see is the event details in a floating widget.
anybody seen anything like it?

(Q) Am I the only one here wondering about.....messaging??

Sorry if this was discussed but I think I just went through the last hundred threads on here, and when I 'search' for hangouts it gives me zero results
So onto my question; am I the only one mad and annoyed that there is no dedicated text messaging app? The only way to text someone new is to go to people> scroll to prison> click their name> click the text message icon....? Really?
Because when clicking the '+' button in 'hangouts' it only opens a new "hangout", and as I learned yesterday hangout and sms isn't the same, after someone texted me back saying "did you just send me something? "..
Why do they have to make such a simple a decades old thing so complicated and dumb?

You're doing it wrong...
Press the + in hangouts. Start typing a name, number, etc. Matches will drop down and choose the one that has the SMS icon.

Moving SMS/MMS app from AOSP 4.3 is the best way, I guess
I don't find it complicated at all in fact it pretty simple.
I don't need to go to people app to text someone new, I can do it straight from hangouts. I just click the "+" and then pick my contact and right from that screen without any extra steps i can select either SMS or hangout as the new conversation type.

Replace Hangouts with 8sms which looks like the good, old SMS app from AOSP:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkleft.eightyeightsms.mms
Don't forget to define 8sms as "default sms app" in settings and you're done. For me, this is much better than using Hangouts...

all you need to do is open hangouts, click the + button, then if you want to call Phil, type PHIL.
you'll see phil's mobile number, his work number, his home number, and you'll see his hangout email address.
click on the one you want to send him a message through....... that's it........ that's not too hard.
Thanks guys that's a lot better, I even hate the hangouts icon looks more like a iPhone icon than a text.
On a sidenote.. damn, clean android is very boring and NOT customizable at all. I need aokp asap.

I personally prefer chomp sms (they're working on updating it for 4.4) but their other texting app, textra has been updated and I'm liking it quite a lot actually.
Give it a try. It doesn't have the most customizations but probably more than 8sms. It's not bloated like go sms or handcent

Yeah I agree with you. I don't like how it defaults to using chat instead of texting. A lot of people at work have iphones, so I need to actually text them, not use hangouts. It isn't too big of a deal, but it takes an extra step to select "SMS" instead of in 4.3, just typing their name.

Using Google Hangouts Dialer as default.

Is this possible? I have a non activated T-Mobile sim in the 2014 Moto X Pure Edition on 5.0
I only use google voice with hangouts to make and receive calls. I want to be able to hit a number online and have it call with Hangouts. Instead it only give me the option to call with the default dialer or Viber. I have SMS set as default so I recieve that directly through Hangouts. Not sure what im doing wrong with the dialer.
Try installing Google Voice onto your phone. The hangouts dialer is just an add-on to Hangouts, and not really a standalone app. It becomes a shortcut in the app drawer to Hangouts. Hope this helps and update us on an answer!

Yeah I have Google Voice on the phone as well.
OK. Go into settings and find Application Manager. Then scroll to All and look for the Dialer.apk and clear its defaults. Or just drag the phone icon on the home screen to the top and should give option to view App Info, which will tell you what app it is.

Thanks for the reply. I did that but clear defaults is greyed out so I can't click on it. Says no defaults set. I downloaded default app editor. For the calling option there's only phone and viber but for messaging hangouts is on the list. I need hangouts on the list for calling
Just received the hangouts dialer update this morning. Still can't set as default but it did enable me to touch a number online and call with Hangouts Dialer. Good enough!
