Hello,
I know there are threads about this but non of them answered my question.
Here's my situation:
I have a collection of music and only one of those songs was bought from the zune marketplace. This song is "Drop the World" by lil wayne.
When I play this track there is no artist image or so showing up. I don't know why, but when I search the marketplace for lil wayne and play any of these songs (30 seconds preview), I don't have any art there either so I suppose there is simply is no art for this artist.
However, I have a lot of other music in my collection that was not bought from Zune, one example is Rihanna. When I search the marketplace and play a Rihanna song, it shows me art work but when I play my own full songs, it does not.
I have a German WLID and phone settings if that matters.
I have tried using Zune Social Tagger (version 2.4.1.0) and it showed me that the lil wayne song is linked. Now when I try to link any other song it finds the correct info etc and I click on "next", I have the option to select a song. I can do so but I always leave the box "Update album information (artist, title, etc)" unchecked because I don't want zune social tagger to mess with my mp3 tags.
However, when I click "Link" it did not actually work. The Zune Social Tagger still says "Unlinked" and there is no art on the phone.
I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any ideas?
having the same problem. some says because other countries are not supported by the zune market.. thats the reason why this problem occur
For me this somehow worked.
I don't really know what I did. I just used Zune Social Tagger and afterwards synced my phone with zune. If the artist background was missing in Zune, I started Zune Social Tagger again and tagged it again. Some files had to be tagged many times but in the end it all worked, although I'm now having a problem with Mango.
I am living in Germany also but have not had any problem finding info, now sometimes you will have to find album art yourself which I think was the case with the album Rebirth(which the song you are talking about comes from)since it kept having delays being released then being pulled, but I did just look and all versions are there so it should work for you also. Now sometimes it happens that you have to re-sync manually especially if you already synced the song and you are trying update it it does happen sometimes. If should correct itself if not fix it through zune delete it from your phone and re-sync again should work then. Hope this helps you.
Well like I said it worked with NoDo, I just had to try it several times.
I also did not let zune social tagger or zune edit the MP3 tags, I did that on my own before.
I had cover artwork in the mp3 tags before.
While it worked for most songs on NoDo (I'm having some issues with Mango though), but not for the song mentioned because there is no artwork for Lil Wayne in the German marketplace (at least from what I can tell).
Now I understand your problem is really a GEMA issue not so much a market issue, with the Mango change more information relating to music is out and GEMA is trying to extort everybody. Well my settings are Germany I had changed over to the US when I found out all the problems people was having not just in WP7, Apple had the same issue they just did the dirty deed and mostly paid them. Now spoke with a few friends of mine with WP7 and they have the same issue can load the art themselves but not recognized the background due to issues alot of new Albums have this problem even in NoDo Kanye and Jay-Z did not want to pay GEMA so they have really no background either. Don't think this issue will change soon but you can still try the way I said.
The weird thing is that there appears to be artist backgrounds for most songs.
For example the song "Roman's Revenge" by Nicki Minaj.
I had artist background for this song in NoDo but not in Mango.
And what's really weird is that when I open the music + videos app, select music and then tap on Nicki Minaj (from the lists of artists), I actually have a background and only this song in my library. But when I play the song there is no artist background.

I have a huge library of music that is all perfectly tagged in iTunes. Yet when I move to my Nexus One, a lot of it doesn't appear correctly. lots of "unknown artists" or songs in the incorrect track order.
is there something I need to know about doing this correctly? again, all of the music has been meticulously tagged in iTunes.
thanks
I'm no expert on iTunes, but I did used my iPhone 2G for the past two years. All I can tell you is that I believe iTunes keeps tags and all your music info under it's own database (might be wrong ). I don't believe it actually "tags" your mp3 files. That's why I stopped using it to tag my collection.
I use mp3Tag to tag my files, and it even does mp4 movie files.

That is very weird. I have only encounter one of my albums not showing the "cover art" on the Nexus. But all tags are correct and show properly. Maybe rescanning the SD card might help?
iTunes does indeed keep it's own database.
Therefore it doesn't actually embed the info into each track.
Remember to label the file in wondows explorer as well as I think the N1 might use this.
You can enbed all of the info using iTunes so that your music is perfect on all devices but it is tedious, on another post I've commented that I've done 120Gb (21000 songs) of my 300Gb so far.......
Use doubleTwist. Syncs iTunes to pretty much any MP3 device these days. They recently added N1 support. It's free too.
Works perfectly too- all my tags and album artwork are showing up under the standard music app and nemoPlayer from the Liquid.
I stopped using itunes a long time ago and switched to mediamonkey. Each time I put an album in the library I update the tag from the web, this includes the album covers in the mp3 tags. everything copies just fine to the N1.

I love MediaMonkey. I even bought the Pro version .
doubleTwist is nice but what killed it for me is the fact that it doesn't support networked drives Not sure if they fixed this yet.
I have all my content on a NAS.

you all sure about this. I've moved my "tagged" items from iTunes many times into different client apps and always had it stay tagged the same way. this is not a challenge to your knowledge simply a "really?"
if indeed true, then to clarify what is the best app to use to tag all my music again so it shows correctly in any other client music app i use it in?

i'm trying out doubleTwist. LifeHacker swoons about it.
You also have to give the media player a chance to update it's display.
I noticed this when I dumped a bunch of music on it, went immediately to the player and saw a bunch of stuff tagged wrong and then I watched it correct itself after a few seconds and combine some artists that it was seeing wrong.

yea...it's been days though.
Android uses idv2 for identifying tags and it ignores idv1 but there are tagger apps on the market that work well like mp3tagger or tag but if you perfer a PC then go for it.
i've got the problem, that albums are not grouped right. If i got a album from one artist, everything ist ok, but if i've got a album with diferent artists, it is sorted by the artist name an i've got 20 albums (with the same name) and only one track in it, this is very ugly...
like showen in this screenshot. Here you see the album from Rammstein - Liebe ist für alle da (it is only showen one time) but demovibes 9 is showen multiple

Artist needs to be tagged as various, and each artist needs to be tagged in "track artist"
omg, then i need to retag my whole collection...
on every app and device it is working correctly, only on my android phones not, this is evil
co-sign on mediamonkey.
it'll make your changing album artist to "various" really easy.
changed everything in media monkey. was pretty easy as those have said. then deleted entire library in iTunes and added again. I couldn't believe it when they all went back to how they were originally tagged in iTunes. what the heck gives?
Not only that but a bunch of them are tagged one way in Media Monkey and a different way in iTunes.
this is so frustrating....
Hello everyone,
Looking for a solution to an issue with the Music Player I have stumbled across within the first couple days of using the Captivate.
I have an external 16GB sd card filled with mp3s that has ~2GB free. When opening Music Player I find all of my files are there, but if I try switching to "Artists" view the application will close and I will get the message "Not Enough Space in Music Database". My internal sd card does not have any media on it so this card is nearly 100% empty.
It's pretty annoying not having the ability to sort by artists as you could imagine.
Sorry if this has been covered already, but I couldn't find anything in the Captivate forum about it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
I had the same problem. I'm now using the cubed music player without any problems, and I really like it. Check it out here.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've got it running now and I am happy with this.

I have the same problem [Not Enough Space in Music Database] error occurs when trying to sort by Artist or searching (for anything) from the Music Player.
It would be nice to have a fix for the Samsung/stock Music Player (which can't be removed) instead of installing yet another redundant application.

I was looking around in dbdata/databases/media and there are some artist databases and such in there that I thought might have something to do with this, but I don't really know what they do or anything.
Maybe someone who knows more than I do could look at them and see if they notice anything strange that may be causing the problem.
Works with 30 Artists
After deleting most of the music library from the phone [reduced to 30 artists from 181] I was able to use the Vibrant Music Player to organize by Artist.
I too had the same problem: 32 gb SanDisk card installed with 3260 songs and I am not sure how many artists. Coming from an iPhone 3Gs, I was not happy with the native program's GUI, and not being able to sort by artist made searching nearly impossible.
I reformatted the card, and am in the midst of rebuilding some playlists in iTunes, and importing using iTunes Sync (I believe that is the name of the program; I am on my laptop right now). As of now, I have 463 songs, and 3 genres. Music Player recognizes artists, and displays them fine, at this point.
I did find a different music player with (IMO) a better GUI; it is called MixZing. The free version has ads, and after playing with the advanced features like a 10 band eq, I think it is well worth the 5 bucks for the full version.
Just my .02; hope it helps.

I did try "3", and it is fun to play with. I like the functionality of MixZing better for when I'm driving and trying to flip through tunes.
Yes, you are right: the lock screen widget is great; thanks for mentioning it as I forgot that feature.
Wow, this problem is devastating. I still haven't transfered and organized all my music but I don't want to use another app. The default one is perfect, I can pause/skip from lockscreen and swipe down the status bar while working with the phone.
But most importantly: The virtual surround sound! I can't let that go and use another application!
I'm also having this issue..my internal card has around 11 gigs of music. I synced using media monkey and set it to embed album art into the tags, could that have something to do with it?
I too am rooted, have 10 gigs of music and album art on my external 16 gig sd card and have no issues sorting by any means via the default music player.
I've installed titanium backup, busybox, rom manager, launcher pro and a few have fun apps. Uninstalled all the AT&T junk. If that helps.

I have about 17GB of music on an SD card, and I ran into this issue. The card was recently formatted, and my Android installation is pretty clean.
I realize 17GB of music is a lot, and I know I could pare it down to work around this problem, but nonetheless I'm very disappointed that Samsung didn't put together a better database system.
Mixzing and Cubed can handle it. The stock music app is really great otherwise, but this issue basically ruins it for me. C'mon, Samsung.
I found this post by DLarva in the Vibrant Forum... perhaps this is the key:
DLarva said:
OK, well I thought was the number of artists, but now I'm not so sure.
Maybe it has something to do with how the app handles various artists and/or unknown artists.
I added all my music, then deleted tracks from various artist albums until it worked again. I then put back the various artist album track and it didn't work, as expected.
I thought this was artist based, but when I got it working again--by deleting the track mentioned above--and then added a track for a various artist album by an artist that already existed, the app crashed too.
I then thought it might be song based. So I removed that song and then added a set of songs. However, it unexpectantly worked.
The difference with the set of songs added above is that they weren't part of a various artist album. They were a new artist, but the main album artist wasn't Various with a Contributing artist of the actual artist name. Instead, the Album Artist was the artist name and the contributing artist was left blank (or had the same name).
So, it is that the music app doesn't understand how to handle various artist albums?
Could someone else with this problem remove all the various artist albums from their collection and see if their app works again?

Even the stock android music player can handle it. I don't think its a database issue but instead a bug in the music player itself.

I just hit the same roadblock.
No one have any definitive answers yet? Besides "Buy an iPod" ?
Anyone know just how many artists it can take before it crashes?
There's a workaround... just get rid of/rename your various artist tracks. As long as you don't have too many tracks by "Various Artists", you will not have this issue any more. I have 8 gigs of music on my SD card and no issues with sorting by artist.

I have about 16gb of music split between my internal and external SD cards. None of my mp3s are tagged with "Various Artists" in the artist field, yet I still experience the "Not enough space..." error when attempting to sort by Artist. However, all other sort filters work fine.
Does anyone know if the leaked JI6 ROM still has this issue?
Workaround <G> Well, I deleted the soundtrack and collection albums from the microSD card, that works too.
I'd rather not lose the artist names from the MP3 tags but I guess putting "Samsung ****S" in there instead would also serve the purpose.
There must be a terribly small limit (128? 256?) on the number of records/fields in that database, because I really didn't have THAT many artist names. Maybe two dozen primaries, then only 6 discs of "collections", like the 4-disc Woodstock set. Odds are there are 128 artists in all--and that's enough to crash a database?!
ROFL, with tears in my eyes. Was this stuff written by programmers, or Pinky And The Brain? As if it would be SO HARD to release an update? And compete with an iPod?
[LATER]
I think I've just discovered another and greater reason to dump the Samsung/AT&T Music Player: It inserts breaks! Like the Windows Media Player, it is incapable of playing two consecutive tracks without inserting a pause.
If you have ever listened to Simon & Garfunkel, or Pink Floyd, or The Moody Blues, or Jefferson Airplane/Starship....there are many albums that segue from one track into the next WITHOUT ANY BREAK. Now this nasty little cheapware comes along, and to me it sounds just like a skip in an LP, there's a half second of dead silence interrupting the playback. That's just plain nasty, considering all the software has to do is pre-fetch, buffer the next track and keep playing.
Looks like I'm going shopping...and then doing a little root & spring cleaning with the trash, unless Samsung fix this all in the Froyo release.
"Dear Samsung and AT&T: Grow up! There's no excuse for this kind of software getting onto the market in this day and age. You can and MUST do better."
I have lots of albuns in my computer and I did the ''Find Album Info'' in Zune and got the covers and all that.. Them I synced some albuns with my Omnia 7 and now when I play the music there is no album art in the background of Zune and no art in the Lockscreen.. Any ideas..?
did you enable lockscreen album art in the settings? it's in the lock/wallpaper settings.
It doesn't actually display album art, it displays artist art which is only available from the zune marketplace. So if you are in a region where you don't have access to it, you won't get any artwork in the background. It would be nice to be able to set local custom artist art, but I don't think there is any way to do that currently.
I'm in a country with Zune marketplace. I only get artwork for tracks I play off the zune marketplace. None of my own seem to work. That goes for the lock screen and even when just playing the tracks in the player. I've also done the same with Find Info etc... in Zune but no joy.

Do you still can't see album art on lockscreen?
Play a song that you don't see artist art on your phone on Zune on your PC. If Zune displays artist art when you are playing it on your PC, then that means Zune properly recognizes the song you are playing and has properly linked it with an artist that has information and art available off the Zune database.
This is highly dependent on your tags being correct, and on there being an entry for your artist in the Zune Marketplace.
If your artist does not have any information in the Zune Database, you won't get artist information, biographies, lock-screen artist photos, and all the fancy Zune features normally tied to a linked artist.
It's actually hit n miss as to whether the Zune software on PC will show artist background either - and that's for albums that have been downloaded off Zune Marketplace, and those ones DO show artwork on the phone.
Not sure what I need to enter in the tag info then to get it to recognise them. I have albums that match the Zune versions identically, and I've used the get album info to ensure they match.
Am at a bit of a loss

You can also right-click songs in your collection, and if it matches something in the Zune database, you should be able to see an option named "More about this album" which would bring you to the artist's page on the Zune Marketplace. This is an easy way to check if a specific song has been properly linked to something in the Zune library.
Any song that plays with artist photos on my PC has also displayed properly on my phone/lock-screen, so I'm not having any issues there.
Is there any way to enable displaying album art from the id3 tags in Mango, while zune is playing and phone is locked? There was an option on Green Mango for HD2 with "display album art on lockscreen", but in Mango RTM it disappeared. It wasn't working in Green Mango.
Hello,
about a week ago I updated most of my media on my phone with zune social tagger so that most songs had artist backgrounds. These backgrounds showed up on the phone during playback (back then on 7392) and when I played the song in Zune on the PC.
Sometimes I only have single song from an album. If I then searched for the album on the marketplace and found it, it would offer me 30 second snippets of all the songs but the one I have on my phone. Instead, this song would be played from my library without problems and with artist background.
However, since Mango these backgrounds are missing on some songs.
One example is the song "Renegade" from the Jay-Z album "The Blueprint".
I have only this song from the album.
The weird thing is that when I search for album in the marketplace, find it and start to play the tracks, it shows me the artist background.
However, when the track I have on my phone (Renegade) comes up, the artist background disappears.
On the PC the background is still there.
Any ideas?
OK I got a little further.
Apparently with Mango the way the artist backgrounds work has been changed at least a little bit.
The thing that was wrong in the song mentioned above (Renegade) was this:
The song is from a Jay-Z album and is by Jay-Z and Eminem. I had set the artist to this:
Jay-Z; Eminem
However, it was recognized as one artist by Zune and as such the artist of the song would show up as "Jay-Z; Eminem" which is not what I intended.
So I changed the artist tag using Windows Explorer. I first removed all the artist, then wrote in "Jay-Z" and saved, and then wrote in "Eminem" (after the auto generated semicolon) and saved again. I don't really know what's different in the artist tag now but somehow Zune seems to regocnize that there are two artist and only displays the first artist (as it should).
This fixed the missing background for this song.
Additonally, I noticed that songs which are not linked to Zune Marketplace songs now also have artist backgrounds as long as the artist tag is correct and I have an album by that artist on my phone.
For example the album "The Marshall Mathers LP" by Eminem is not in the German Zune Marketplace but I have it on my phone (not linked using zune social tagger).
When I play a song from that album I do have an artist background as long as the artist mp3 tag is set to Eminem (or set to "Eminem; xxx", as long as it is done using Windows Explorer (or probably also WMP etc.)).
However there are still artist backgrounds missing for some music from the device while they show up in the Zune software on the pc and the artist tag is correct.
For these artists I also don't have any backgrounds in when I tap on their names.
Another thing that doesn't work (probably a missing feature) is that when I play all songs by Eminem, Zune does not add songs to the list where Eminem is only the secondary artist (such as Renegade as noted above).
Anyone know a good way to manage music with a g2x??
I have well over 2k songs on my itunes. I have them all on my g2x, but it seems to have a poor music managing system.
Songs/Artists/Playlists are duplicated many times, playlists duplicate the songs within them sometimes, etc.
I'm wondering if theres a good software to manage the music on my phone?
Something comparable to itunes preferrably
I just want to be able to make playlists on my computer without them duplicating on my phone.
I've tried doubletwist, itunesagent (which doesn't copy playlists), and even winamp.
i'm just using Google Play
I'm just using Google Play Music as well and transfer my files via mass storage. Now I use the cloud for Google Play Music and just keep a few albums on my SD card. I have no problems with duplicates or any other issues.
You have to get a tag editor and
Make sure there filled out right... iTunes fixes them but the music players don't.

I only use this to update the ID Tags of all my songs and add the album picture from the web. Its a bit tricky, but what I do is, when I decide I want to add and album to Google Play I tag and add the picture album then upload them.
I have like 40 gigs of music, and slowly have converted to Google play. I fix the tags and albums as I go. Its worked so far
Sometimes the picture or the album name comes out wrong, have to re-upload or manually correct it once its inside Google. It happens sometimes, especially if mediamonkey can't find the rare song online.

Google Play
If done right, all the songs will be properly tagged and the album picture inside. Its running better now then when it was called (Google Music). Used to crash alot. The only decision you have is "Make available Offline"
In the end, when its nicely organized, I use Google Play way way more.

I use Banshee Media Player. I have it set up to sync one specific playlist. It works in one-click and it even converts my FLAC files on the fly to V9 mp3! Even better, even though I have it set to sync one playlist, it keeps track of which tracks belong to other playlists too. I use it on Ubuntu but I think the sync options work on Windows too.
Edit: It also keeps my media tagged, downloads album art and sorts the files into an [Artist]>[Album] folder structure.
