Dear Seniors,Developers,Moderators and Members,
Hi guys, I recently just joined this site and is totally new to rooting my Sensation.
I read threads like [Guide] to Installing S-off, ClockWork, Root, SuperCID & S-on [03/AUG/11](noobproof), [ROM] Android Revolution HD™ 3.5.0 XE | High Quality & Performance | OC | faux 0.1.5
but I am still not sure about certain things
1)My Sensation is running on Android 2.3.3. Am I able to S-OFF, Permanently root my Sensation and to install Android Revolution HD rom which has 2.3.4?
2)Which steps am I going to take to S-OFF, Permanently root and install that custom rom? [Got confused whether to follow step 1 to 3 [root] or step 1 and 2[install custom rom for the first time]]
3)Am I use my phone normally like an unrooted phone after S-OFF and Permanently rooted my phone without install a custom rom?
4)Is this [GUIDE] (For Noobs) SDK, ADB, and Drivers needed as part of the phone rooting process?[I don't have any HTC Sync software/drivers installed]
5)Is Super CID needed to install Android Revolution HD rom? [I didn't quite understand what Super CID is]
Thank you for spending your time reading it, any more information or help is much appreciated.
1. Yes
2. Read the first guide, do Step 1 & 2 and then flash the custom ROM
3. Yes, if you do Steps 1, 2 & 3 (if you just want a stock rooted ROM)
4. No
5. No
You can Root you sensation.
Follow the steps from step 1.
1)S-off your phone via Revolutionary method;
2)Install recovery;
3)Permenantly root your phone;
4)Flash New Rom;
These are the basic steps you have to follow. All the steps are explained very well in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300.
SuperCID is not really required.
And the drivers, well i did not download them(I am not sure if they were already present in my laptop), so just give it a try without downloading them, but yes, the files mentioned on the S-off, Rooting thread would be required.
Before starting, make sure to "Enable Debugging" and "Disable Fastboot".
Also uninstall HTC Sync from your mobile.
Good luck with it, if there are any more doubts, post again, me or someone else will help for sure.
Thanks for your replies, I have a problem in revolutonary it say communication with phone unexpectdly interrupted. Try again. How do I solve it?

Nope, I have already uninstalled the HTC Sync and left HTC Driver Installer and HTC BMP Usb Driver installed only.
Just keep trying, it will eventually work. I've reported it god knows how many times to the Revo guys but they either don't care or can't fix it
After each step that fails, reboot the phone and do it again

Yes!! Finally got it S-OFF but the the version is 1.17.1111 not 1.17.1011. Is it ok?
I finally installed Android Revolution HD, thanks for you guys for providing me much more information on the procedure. I have one last question, Is it necessarily to flash Radio_10.58.9035.00U_10.15.9035.02_2 to my phone? that is recommended by mike after installing Android Revolution HD

I have tried installing several different ROMS all with the same result. -> stuck in the HTC white screen, not even the black letter that come after it normaly.
I followed the noob s-off guide, did every step like in the guide. Next i tried loading a new rom (Revolution HD and RCmix) both are the newest version as of now. Installing the entire ROM takes like 2 mins max (seems kinda short) but in both cases it says it is installed OK.
Everytime all i could do was reinstall the recovey (because that didnt work also) and then do a recovery of my old ROM.
I searched all the forums but nobody with a Sensation is having trouble with it.
I have a Sensation with HBOOT 1.18 and i have Android 2.3.4 with the 1.45.401.3 softwareversion.
I really dont get it. Can anybody please help with my Sensation problem???

do you have root access? s-off and root are two different things.
something definitely is off was your h-boot 1.18 prior to applying the noob proof s-off? because generally after gaining root your h-boot will change to 1.17xxxxxx
you will need this file
after s-off install clockworkmod or [4ext recovery (in my signature)]
*after recovery installed
*copy paste the downloaded file (su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip) into the rootof your device
*reboot into recovery and apply update.zip
it might say the install was aborted. (go ahead and try again) if it says aborted one more time thats alright. it did this for me for both my sensations but it still gave me root access.
there is an app called Root Checker on the market that will verify if you have gained root access and give you possible solutions if you havent acquired root access through this process.
after you have achieved root access you will be able to apply roms successfully
Let me know if this works
Hi rddocke,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I forgot to mention in my post that i did do the rooting explained in the guide and by you, i am 100% sure i have root acces on my device, i can run titanium backup for instance (and actually backup), use setcpu and i have the extra "Superuser" tile in my list of programs.
I have HBOOT 1.18 before S-OFF and after I have 1.17.11111 i believe (definitely 1.17.xxxxxx).
U have any more help to give?

Hi,
I'm not sure which guide you used to get s-off,but have a look in my sig for the s-off guide there.
Did you do the super CID stage?
If you haven't,that might explain why none of the ROMS you are trying are working.

after the phone has had about 10 minutes use the bottom of the screen seems to not work
usually i cant unlock the screen to answer calls, or if it unlocks when i press the phone symbol it changes to green but doesnt open the
application, and i had read some where that this can be caused by the operating system
hence i fancied returning the phone to standard to see
cheers
in Android Development forums, one of the first posts is an INDEX. in it you can find 2 solutions:
Stock pre-rooted rom: i recommend installing this, since it is very easy to do, and it will most likely solve all your problems, without removing root access.
Downgrade guide: you can downgrade your phone to get a factory reset, but it is kind of tricky, and you can mess up easily. Still, if the first option doesn't work, take some time to read and go for it.
Hey everyone, made an account just for this question but it turns out I can't ask it in the appropriate forum thread because I'm a noob.
So here it goes: just rooted my phone for the first time and installed the Viper rom using Rom Manager, and it's stuck in the boot screen. Think it's been like this for 10 minutes now. Is this normal, or what should I do?

Upgrade your firmware to 3.33 - follow the [GUIDE] posts and tools in Sensation General and Development forums - note: you may need to S-OFF, in which case if your hboot version is 1.17 or 1.18 go to revolutionary.io else go to unlimited.io - for JuopunutBear S-OFF it is best to follow the guides by ganeshp in Sensation General forum

Thanks a bunch, Although I think I do have a serious problem, since the recovery image sends me back to the viper rom - the one which won't go past the boot screen.
I have my phone plugged into my computer but my computer won't recognize the phone (it's in bootload mode) "recovery" goes back to the viper rom, as well as the factory reset. (and I did back up my unrooted version but I think because I hit the backup thing in the viper installation it overwrote that)
So yeah. Did i just **** up my phone for good? =\
(and thanks for responding )
[[ Edit : I've taken my SD card out of my phone, and mounted it into a card reader and am now putting a stock rom onto the SD card, going to see if I can install the stock rom and work from there. ]]

Hi,
Try following THIS GUIDE
Start again from scratch.Follow it to the letter.
Well, Reporting back here.
I first installed this ROM back http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529941 back onto my phone to get it functional again,
then I followed This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472298
followed up by doing everything here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
checked my phones versions : Android 4.0.3 , Sense 3.6 and software version 3.33.401.106
felt confident of trying the viper ROM again, but it's stuck on it's loading screen again. What do you guys advice? I think I'm going to try a different ROM just to see what happens.
Also wanted to thank both of you for trying to help, it's much appreciated.

Hi,
When you are s-on,you have to use smartflash in 4EXT every time you install a ROM.
I think there is a way described in Asskicker's thread to enable it permanently.
Read through the thread.
Hi just thought I jump in on this thread as I also do not have permission to post directly in Rom thread...
Running latest version of Viper 1.3.5 and must say it's great...
When sound profile is on loud, and screen turns off there's a notification sound each time. Any way to switch this sound off? I've searched through tweaks and personalisation settings can't see anything.
Not a show stopper by any means just curious

Hello there
I received a new HTC Sensation as a gift, It was bought from Ebay. It came with Stock 2.3. I would like some help on how to root, install CWM/4EXT and install Sultanxda's CM11 ROM. I also like Viper Rom but we all know Kitkat is in a lot of ways better than JB. I have already read the guides in the Forums, but that didn't help me much. This is my first Android phone but not necessarily the first phone I flash a Custom Rom to. I have some experience with LG and Samsung phones, but those are easier. In few words, could someone please answer this questions?
1) Do I need to update to ICS to install CM11? Also, how do I install CWM/4EXT and Root the phone?
2) Do I lose my network connectivity? I mean, do I have to backup something like IMEI data or EFS Folder? I don't live in the US (sorry for my bad english) and the phone is unlocked, dunno if that matters.
3) This may sound silly and stupid, but can I live without Gapps? I don't really need them, I can just install another market. Gapps use too much resources and the only Google Apps that I MAY use are Youtube and Chrome Browser. Also, I need to sync contacts but I already exported as Vcard file. I do not need Google Play or the other Google Apps.
Thanks for your help and advice

To flash another rom you need to be s-off or to unlock your bootloader. I don't know exactly if you need to update to ICS, but I don't think so, it should be enough to update your firmware (as far as I know that's necessary). For kitkat roms you should use 4EXT.
You don't loose anything, but you can make a backup of your stock rom as it is with 4ext and save it to your computer.
Yes, you can live without gapps. You don't want them, don't flash them.
To install a custom rom you need to do the following:
Get root access - go to htcdev.com select Sensation they will tell you what to do next
Install Custom Recovery - find an CWM TWRP or 4EXT image for Sensation here on XDA and flash it using fastboot
Get S-OFF - go to http://unlimited.io/juopunutbear.htm they will also guide you trough the process ( the most fun ive had unlocking, its like a game)
Then you are ready to flash custom roms. As for CM11 our device isnt supported officially though there are great CM11 based roms for our device.
Installing rom is easy dont worry when you are done unlocking the phone i can explain that also. If you have any further questions regarding any of the above procedures ill try to help. Cheers

S-OFF is kinda usefull, but not necessary.
I would suggest -
revolutionary to s-off (easiest way)
flash the 3.32 or 3.33 firmware (needed for latest roms)
flash 4ext recovery (latest is 1.0.0.6) i can post it if u cant find it in link below.
Then ul have full control of ur phone and u can flash any rom in recovery. Link below has all u need.

there's a guide somewheres, you don't have to s-off. I'm not even sure what the benefit of s-off is.

Yes u dont need to s-off but it has many benefits (google to find out for urself) but the main reason i suggest it too some users is because normally the people that ask how to do this and how to do that r usually the people that panic when something goes wrong then they automatically think they need to run a ruu then the ruu fails then they ask questions later when they stuck. So for me to suggest s-off is for one reason only, supercid.. then when they get stuck they can run any ruu and not worry. Anyway to s-off using revolutionary is faster than unlocking ur bootloader via htcdev, so why not? And ul have FULL control of ur phone.

i have been worried about bricking so much that i didnt try to many weird procedures. i had even tried to go through with the android revolution installation procedure but failed right on. because revolutionary does not with with my device even though thr hboot is supported.
i badly need to move to a newer jelly bean based rom or later else my device is like a stone-age crap. i sincerely request some straight forward process / guidance of getting through this without weird, wire trick etc.
i really want to keep this device instead of buying a new device for no reason. but i dont know how to start and how to end. kindly help me out.

This is definately not the place to ask for "all inclusive help".
You should at least do some own basic researches or leave your phone as it is,
especially when you're worried about bricking your device.
There are so many excellent descriptions here, that could guide you to flash a custom rom.

If you are on hboot 1.18 you don't need to do the wire trick for s-off, just have a look at this.
If you searched a little bit, you'd find out yourself.
But even the wire trick is nothing "bad", I did it on 6 devices till now.
I'd like to encourage you to simply read/search a little bit more here in the forums before coming back and asking for help.

This is definately not the place to ask for "all inclusive help".
You should at least do some own basic researches or leave your phone as it is,
especially when you're worried about bricking your device.

Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751187 to gain S-OFF. Don't worry about the htcdev part.
I did it on a complete stock sensation xe with hboot 1.27 or 1.29 (can't remember exactly).
Just use the temp root and rumrunner.
For any information read the thread first, before asking.
Also this thread should be moved, because it doesn't belong into the development section.

i went through the thread again and again but still find it somewhat confusing. I cant seem to separate the temproot process start and end in there. can someone outline just the temproot procedure and the pre-requisite for it ?
Does temproot require controlbear files ? rumrunner site says it requires a htc dev unlocked device. is that a must ?

I'm not 100% sure about the exact steps anymore, but you don't need Controlbear, you just need the temp root.
When you have temp root, run rumrunner and follow the instructions.
I said read the thread, cause it might be possible that you get the message that it didn't work, while it actually did work.
You'll get everything needed in the thread. Otherwise just ask.

if revolutionary.io method doesn't work then try to update officially
see this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1672425
then try with juopunutbear or rumrunner method again

One thing you could do is:
- get your phone updated to ICS (OTA over device settings) to get the latest firmware/hboot on it
- HTC Dev unlock your device (nothing complicated, you need to have fastboot running)
- Install/flash latest 4ext recovery (once more via fastboot) and enable smart flash option
Now in recovery with updated firmware/hboot make a nandroid backup and flash almost every rom you like.
In first place I'd not flash a CM12 rom.

since you update to ics you will be able to flash every ics/jb/kk/lp custom rom you like
so should i go ahead with the official ics update?
It's up to you.
Might be you're just satisfied with your new ICS firmware.
If you want to go further, unlock and custom recovery is an quite easy step.
For custom rom s-off is not necessarily needed.

If you do the update, try again with rumrunner after it has finished.
Thanks. I updated to ICS and did a full factory reset. The device seems to be quiet smooth compared to GB though. The next update i do will be using what you suggested. Without SOFF flashing a custom rom.
When i get there i will message back on this thread. Going to test drive this ICS now for a while.time.
