Ok time to put more HD vids on the phone...
BRAVO to samsung for providing the user WITH useable storage too! nice to have 13 gigs to play with... HTC may have lost a customer for reals with this phone in my hand. (i lasted 1 years w/ the fuze, i may never flash this one - have to see how sluggish it gets as i fill it up)

Hey now! I enjoy my Captivate just as much as him. Just because AT&T is about as reliable as Virgin Mobile's service in terms of providing upgrades doesn't make this any less of an amazing phone. Out of all the phones that XDA has developed for (That I've owned), this one certainly takes the cake for the most developed. I hope you enjoy your captivate! And if something goes wrong, USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION. >

pure speculation to which i speculate you will be proven wrong...
i speculate the push to 2.2 starts sometime in the 1.5-2 weeks after the mobile ap app becomes available on the 13th

Overall it is a good phone.
A few aggravating quirks, but hey, I have yet to see anything perfect
Congrats on your new addition
Glad you like it man. Great phone; just go and get a custom launcher (I have about 6 of them lol) and have at it; if you don't like TouchWiz anyway.
But yea, if you ever get bored of the phone you should definitely install a custom rom on the phone; makes it that much better.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
I actually used stock for about 4 months or so. Partly was because I was unaware about custom roms, and when I found out about then I was hesitant to flash just because I never done it before. I'm pretty technological, built my own computers, overclocked and ect, but flashing was new territory.
That said, I am absolutely stunned with my phone now. I didn't think it was sluggish before, but now I can't believe I edited that long. I really wish I took a video of my phone at stock and then flashed. Incredible.
Basically, any lag or slight slow down your captivate will experience will disappear with a new rom.
Samsung Captivate
Firefly 2.0.5
SpeedMod Q Big Mem
JK4 Modem
The more apps you have, the more you do, the more it starts to chug.
Big time.
My brother got one (and has since returned it), but after three weeks, that thing was unusable.

It gets pretty sluggish after you have a few apps on it. I would definitely recommend flashing it because the stock just sucks...

Definetly recommend flashing it. Do your research first, but you will really know see the difference and come to the realization that most do...should have done this sooner.

Glad you are loving your new Captivate. GPS aside, I think hardware wise it is a fantastic phone, but only realized this after flashing ROMs developed by the guys here at XDA. The corporate/tech support behind the Captivate is what most of us gripe about. Flash away and donate, as you will surely be pleased with what you find. Good work deserves reward.
200 app an counting no lag here at all. Do the lag fix preferably ext4 voodoo.

haha reading this made me LOL. i was the same way. super happy with the phone when i got it. a week later, got frustrated with GPS not working. another week later, rooted phone to get rid of all the ATT crap that kept popping up. Then i decided to hang in there. 3 months and i wanted to throw the phone in a lake.
then i flashed w/ serendipity w/ speedmod and damn it was awesome! shows what the phone really can do. too bad samsung couldnt figure it out.
HaHa
better keep that can and string around. when the frustration sets in you'll need it
Hey guys, i am currently interested in getting the g2x to dev on. I dev for the Moto defy since the day it came out and have plenty of roms. Now my question is how are you guys experience with this device? I've read some complaints of tons of reboot and back light leak, poor signal..etc.. Any comments would be much appreciated, looking forward to getting this phone
Very good device. Some have backlight bleed but only really noticeable in the dark and when looking at it on an angle.
I haven't had any reboots recently but once when i got a call and after hung up it just died and had to pull battery.
Main problem seems to be that Nvidia's lack of sources for A2DP functionality for stereo bluetooth and that 2.3.3 is on froyo kernel so further updates with custom roms would be difficult.
thanks for the reply, how are the roms? Any problems with current roms ?

In all honesty, CM7 works perfectly even with the lack of a2dp support. 2.3.3 OTA based roms (namely Weapon G2x) works just as well if you want that close to stock feel with more features. MIUI has all the same problems CM7 does since they run off the same kernel.
I've never had any issues with reboots, and if people do it's probably because of rogue apps running in the background. I never had a reboot because I like keeping my app drawer as minimal as possible At least, that is my theory
I love my g2x..just checked the sgs2 but not really into that much, my g2x on Cm7 was faster... The roms are good, I do agree with the lack of tegra support but Meh. Love it..please get one and welcome..
I love my phone.
Excellent performance, excellent display, and excellent battery life. I'm on my 3rd one, but that was because my first one kept locking up, and my 2nd replacement came damaged.
I love this phone, and I wouldn't want to replace it with anything else until the Nexus Prime. ^_^
Absolutely zero problems, love this phone so much. One of the best parts is the glass. It's curved, which makes unlocking it feel really good , and the glass feels really thick and solid. Also NO scratches, coming from an iphone all these things are huge. Loving it.
I feel like this phone can stay up to date with most of the devices coming out right now... On Android, you don't actually need 1GB of RAM... Heck, 512MB is more than enough! I'm gonna hold out until the quad core phones start coming in... If the Nexus Prime is still a dual core, I won't even bother.
I got 99 experiences but a reboot ain't one.
My 1st G2x is running good.
no reboots, no reception issues.
runs great and my app drawer always has at least 200 apps.
lol
I haven't started deving /theming on it yet.
Thanks everyone for you input! Just placed the order for it and cant wait to get. Never dev for any other devices besides moto , so im looking forward to this.
Awesome a new dev!!! Wanna thank you in advance. Good luck

Reboots
My wife and I both have our 3rd G2x (due to replacements of bad phones). The phones we have now are doing well, however we both did experience a random SHUTOFF not reboot. It only happened twice, so I'm just waiting to see if that happens again, really weird.
My G2x is is running great. On my second one due to random shut downs on my first. I only experienced a couple reboots until I got a brand new battery and rooted the phone. Currently running Eagles Blood 2.3.5 others no misshaps. Love it.

This is a great phone. For those of us that have had no problems, the intended impact of the device is evident.
However, you cannot ignore what a lot of people went through. for many, the g2x experience was the worst possible.
LG and T-Mobile appear to have let the phone fade away. Even though its for sale, and can be had for cheap, it no longer appears in comparison with other good phones on the market today. Check the reviews out their today...cnet, etc....The powers that be have let it fade away.
Even DEVs appear to have moved on. Many of the people here a few months ago have moved to other devices. Even saying that, there are some real good ROMs out there...just less people deving them.
In all honesty I have to say, this phone is the best phone I've owned. But in that same honesty, I'd have to say, you may want to consider something else. Even the Sensation is now getting far more press and exposure from T-Mobile than this beauty. There are TONs of ROMs available for the Sensation and some of the best DEVs from the android world are there.
I've recently considered the Bionic....but the VzW pricing plan is just too much. Minimum $100 a month to walk out with a Bionic.
I love the G2x. But if you want long term upgradabiity...you may wish to look elsewhere.
Just my opinion....

No. It just finds it. Maybe not on second one, but 10-20.
Also, I came to G2x from the Bold, which would die in a day with no usage under dead zones. That was a huge problem - I was forced to enable and disable airplane mode all around. The G2x is great in that matter.

I have noticed that a lot of problems happen under the stock ROM or roms based on the stock one.
Flashing something like CM7 or MIUI fixes a lot of problems.
I've read plenty of crap about the G2x and how terrible it can be. Is there a way to tell apart the bad batches from the good ones? Maybe by IMEI? Baseband? OS version?
Thanks!
honestly, ive had my G2x since may? and only problem ive ever had(and still have) is slight screen bleed on my top corners.
other than that, i love and enjoy this phone everyday !

Agreed. I got my phone off of Craigslist and it's even a winner. This is my favorite phone...of all time, maybe. Came from a Vibrant and I won't own another Samsung product for a while.
No good or bad batches. They all come with junk software which is easy fixed with Nvflasher and a custom rom.

OP, do yourself a favor and find a different phone. Honestly, this phone isn't worth the trouble you'll put yourself through. There are better options out there, no need to subject yourself to dealing with the G2X. Perfect example, it's December and they're trying a 2nd time around to release the gingerbread update...the phone came out in April! That should have been done a long time ago. That being said, how soon do you expect it to be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich? Find another device, it isn't worth the trouble.

We're already getting alpha's of ICS. And since we're all on XDA, we've all had GB since CM7. I don't see any other reason to deter him away from this device.

What newer device doesn't have an alpha build of ICS yet? Really, that's nothing to hang your hat on. Truth be told you may never get a bug free build of ICS until the actually release comes out, or at least leaks with the things they will need to make it more stable and bug free. That didn't even really happen completely with gingerbread. The phone's fine if you're someone who's already stuck with it, and can't get out of it (for whatever reason). But, I couldn't in good conscience recommend anyone to purchase this phone. Fact is, if he intends to have anything even close to a pleasant experience HE WILL HAVE TO HACK HIS PHONE, and even then there aren't any guarantees. There are much better options out there.
Honestly the g2x still outperforms most other newer phones released this year( exnyos sgs2 aside )
With ics confirmed for our devices and both cm team and our brilliant devs here on g2x thread who got hw acceleration and just about everything else working for a beta release, I'd say our g2x's are go for their true potential. Though not quite ahead of its time as the hd2 was.. when ics is released for g2x it will only future proof the device longer since that is the OS meant to keep g2x owners happy they kept it!
Oh and I wouldn't say hacking the g2x is difficult anyways, since its one of the easiest phones to root ever lol

I like this phone, it's only the second smartphone I've ever had and my other was a failberry. I had no experience with android and managed to root and flash a rom with no problems only a couple weeks after getting it. I will agree that this is not the greatest phone out of the box with the software, but if you enjoy flashing roms and trying things out it has some good hardware for the price. Some people enjoy rooting and exploring things, and this is a good phone for them IMO.

Then maybe it's user error on your part because the stock GB build was perfectly fine for me. Rooted or not rooted, my phone has never shut down, rebooted, or SOD. It's fine if you don't like the phone, but it would be ignorant to deter someone away from it just because you had a bad experience. There's many that have good experiences with this phone.
Stock ROM is fine.
Custom ROM's based on stock are good.
And CM7 is even better.

I am on my 4th replacement LG-P999 (G2X/WIND Optimus 2X) which I got within the first 15 days of getting the first one and this one has screen bleed at the top corners and light leakage along both edges leaking through the LCD mask. Hardware-wise, if it doesn't have any problems, it is a good phone but the support for it from LG is abysmal, they should be forced out of the cell phone business for that. This phone is only as good as it is because of the hard work done by various developers here and elsewhere who I can't thank enough for that. If you like modding your phone's functions and capabilities, this is probably the best phone for that other than the Optimus 2X P990 model which has the added ability of installing various basebands. When ICS is available with video acceleration, the better camera (no lag), etc., it will significantly improve this phone's operation to what it should have been when it was first sold, it was ahead of Android's ability to take advantage of its hardware. Even if LG does provide ICS for this phone which, although they have promised to provide for the Optimus family of phones such as the 2X, I don't believe it will because it has already moved on in preference to support its 3D phone for which it has released an update to double the phone's 3G/4G speed and other significant improvements. If I were to buy another phone, even though the new Nexus does not have the best hardware, it would be that because it has ICS and will be updated for at least the next 18 months. Second to that would be the new Samsung which is promised to get ICS which I do trust Samsung to do. I will never buy another LG phone or other LG product because LG is so unethical in its business practises. So, you pays your money and takes your chances, just don't bet on a known loser, LG.
I am interested in potentially owning a G2X and I have been doing research on it.
I hear that it freezes all the time, text don't come through, and it is just a pain.....and then i hear people have no problems with it at all.
Is it really that bad? I don't really care about specs or else i'd get a sensation, amaze or galaxy s2.
It is free right now(Along with the Sidekick 4g...which i was considering getting but i've heard even worse stuff about that one)
But is this phone truly that bad?
It really depends on what you are going to do with it.
If you are planning on rooting it and installing a custom rom, kernel, etc then a lot of those issues will be fixed and the phone will operate very well.
On the other hand if you arent going to root it then it has got some serious problems. The code on this phone is ****, so that potentially leads to a lot of problems. Basically if you are not going to root it, i would not suggest it.
In the end this phone has serious potential and that potential can be unlocked if you root it and add roms, but if not it has too many problems and just isnt worth the hassle.
I've never had a single problem with my g2x. I think most of the issues are in the early production ones.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I had mine for over 5 months before i rooted it and installed CM. The issues were minimal for me and i loved the device. Why did i end up rooting it and putting on a custom rom? Not to fix issues, but to be daring (using the term loosely here), and have fun with my device. I actually liked it so much, I bought a second. What were my issues? Lockups now and again, but it seemed to be heat related (ie when plugged in while driving my car), causing to remove the battery and turn it back on. Never had an issue with texts not coming through.
I also got my original for free...and to me, the random battery pull wasn't a show stopper (my palm running WebOS would lock up too now and again) and was easily overlooked due to the specs and capabilities of the device.
On a side note...I still see a random battery pull with CM installed, so custom roms isnt a fix all for this device either...but i still love it(them). Other roms may address other issues, but I havent tried any others so i cant say from personal experience. I have also played with a Sidekick 4G...negative captain...it drove me crazy.
/2 Cents
[edit]
CM=CyanogenMod
seeing the OP has 3 posts under his belt, I wanted to clarify that CM stands for CyanogenMod, a custom rom. Just on the off chance he is unclear on acronyms around here.

You'll be fine man. Most of those problems occurs in the first batch of G2x' when it first came out. Good luck.

I will put it this way, if I had the chance to get this phone for free with my past experience with it, is a yes. Would I pay 200$ and re-up on my contract... not a chance in hell. With the SGS II out right I would go for that or an HTC phone. For free this phone is more then good enough though.
Free G2X? Worth it.
Making bad decision's one at a time.
I would say if you get the phone and put Cyanogenmod on it, it's awesome, when I stuck with the stock ROM, it would freeze overnight, now that I have Cyanogenmod I have no problems whatsoever
My g2x is very stable overclocked to 1.6 with morphic's kernel. Cyanogenmod with the Trinity kernel is stable, fast, and very fun.
I paid for mine and it was worth every penny.

If you are getting this phone for free DO IT! In the end the phone works great and plays every game I load up, rooting and adding a custom rom is a must, I find that weapon is a good rom for the average user, the only thing I didnt like was the back cover but thats just me being picky
i think i was one of the lucky ones to get the first of the 2nd batch of the g2x. i did not have any problems with my phone but i rooted it after about a week. I have to say that the custom rooms are buttery smooth. You have so much more flexibility and it just creates for a much much better user experience. The stock was choppy, not as smooth, and was not very customizable. so i would say if you intend to put custom roms on it, this phone is perfect. if you want to keep it stock then i would go for the galaxy s2.
Every phone will have its issues. If its free, sure get it. If u got the dough to spare then go for the s2
the funny thing is i ask myself the same question when i bought mine your answer well i would buy it again i have had no issues im running a quadrant with phoneixblood rom trinity 15 kernal ext 4 at 6120 my battery last all day with moderate use with juice defender i think you would be totally happy with it its so simple to root like 5 minutes several very good roms for phone cyanogenmod eaglesblood phoneixblood miui you wont be dissapointed if you get it and you need help rooting flashing or anything just inbox me on here i gladly help in any way
Coming from someone that still has a release day phone, the only issues the stock phone ever gave me was stone random lockups, like 10 in the 2 months i had it stock. And for me that issue was fixed completely fixed with a flash to cyanogen mod. I'm really happy with this phone, and i honestly would buy it again even with the original $200 price tag.

I had a lot of issues with this phone stock but once i rooted and did all the stuff to it its running fine now.
I got my phone about a month ago. And yes, those lock ups or screen of deaths occurred a couple times in a few days. Rooted it and flashed a different rom/kernel and now it works wonderful. I believe it is the stock kernel that causes the issues.
My friend had this phone before and he hated it because of all the issues. He then went on to get another phone and told me not to waste my time.... It's unfortunate he didn't read up about rooting the device. This phone has awesome specs, and for the price of $100 that I got it for, I wanted to give it a try.
No problems for this phone whatsoever. Its a good phone I'd say.

thanks for the comments, you have made up my mind. upgrading from a optimist t to the g2x in 3 days (when my tax return comes in) already downloaded all the rom's i'm going to flash....
Is it safe to get this phone presently? Has all the hardware issues been cleared out? I'm looking to pick one up soon second hand. Can anyone point out to me what manufacturing periods I should avoid? Or anything that might help me point out to a dud of a G2X that might have random reboots, overheating issues, etc?
Gonna start prowling on Craigslist to see if I have any luck.
Some people continue to have issues to this day while others dont so there really isnt a consistent way to know if the phone will work properly or not.

Thank you. I guess I'll scratch that idea of getting this phone. Don't want to risk dealing with the hassle and headaches of buying a phone of CL only to find out that it's rebooting like crazy.
Honestly, I hated this phone when I first it, but after getting into using custom ROMs and kernels, I love it. Bottom line is this: if you want a phone that you will use stock, don't get it. If you plan to run a custom ROM and especially if you're even relatively knowledgeable or intelligent grab one if you can get it at a good price. We even have an alpha of ICS out which isn't half bad, it is an alpha so it can be problematic at times.
Edit: also if you want to get into running custom ROMS then definitely go for it, if you can read and follow directions exactly this phone is awesome in that its next to impossible to permanently brick it.

Edit: also if you want to get into running custom ROMS then definitely go for it, if you can read and follow directions exactly this phone is awesome in that its next to impossible to permanently brick it.

What worries me is if it has hardware issues that causes random reboots or overheating issues. I remember reading this when the phone first came out. Other users also had GPS issues, etc.
I'd be willing to get one if the price is right on CL but these things makes me nervous. Any tips on what things I could "try" while testing the phone out on CL or things to look out for? I know the other user said it would be hard to tell...but at this point, anything would be helpful.
I' m digging mine.

Mine is 100%. Just use a Cm7 stable release for the next little bit (some issues in the newer nightlies).

By the way, how's the issue with development with regards to a closed source code?
I remember last time that one of the issues why development was so stale on this phone was due to the closed source nature of the Tegra chip. Is this still the case?

Last time I checked there was active development. Regardless we do have an Alpha of CM9 which if you're aware of the implications of using an Alpha and are ok with it, is good. As far as teh Tegra crap, yea, I think we would have seen a release alot sooner if NVidia wasn't closed-fisted. Otherwise, that's one of the only major downfalls of the alpha is that there is no hardware acceleration, so some ICS specific apps won't run or won't run right.
As far as testing, just do regular stuff, do a litttle browsing, install an app, play a video look to see if it's physically damaged AT ALL, etc. As far as teh GPS, it is an odd one, but I have a method which works 100% for me:
GPS status (download GPS aiding data)>reboot>GPS status to get lock>maps
I also did that and instead of maps I launched Locus and it also got a lock.
Just a note Craigs List not the best place to buy a cell. Do a search, too many horror stories about bad phones.
We just got ics so based on hardware and software specs if your willing to root and flash still a top of the libe phone with bad battery life hah
Pin it to Win it.
If you want I could sell you mine for 250 shipped. Running whatever rom you want. Pm me.
I'm one of the ones who never had any major issues as constant overheating or rebooting...rooted since day 1by the way and with ics roms out its even better. If its dirt cheap I recommend it
It depends, its a decent size and speed. I had mine clocked at the 1500 on eaglesblood and the faux123 kernel stopped the daily SODs (sleep of death). But I wiped it and gave it to my GF only to have the SODs return on the same Rom and Kernel that had gotten rid of it for me. There is also an overheating issue, I was on my second battery in 2 months without clocking the cpu and the smell is horrible, this is a huge issue with these phones.
I think that the phone itself is a great piece of hardware that needs a lot of customizing to get it to where you want it. In the hardware department you get a lot of bang for your buck but it is almost a requirement to install a custom rom to get day to day smooth functionality that we want. Fortunately there is a good number of roms to choose from that you can sample and find one which that best suits your needs
This phone is like having a beautiful wife that just don't act right. It will drive you crazy at times but you just can't keep your hands off it.

Thank you. I guess I'll scratch that idea of getting this phone. Don't want to risk dealing with the hassle and headaches of buying a phone of CL only to find out that it's rebooting like crazy.

I just bought one off of Craigslist and am very happy with it. I gave my wife my T-Mobile galaxy s 2 because I didnt like the way the screen isn't sharp and lack of development for now. I started using her sensation but was not impressed so I bought the G2X. Way better than the sensation I might add. The screen is very impressive, looks better than the sensation,gs2 and my old vibrant. I was really shocked. Battery life though seems to be an issue but I will work it out. The camera is better than the sensation but the gs2 has the best camera I have seen to date. If I were you I would buy one. And yes I do a lot of phone swapping, I think I have owed every Android phone that came out for T-Mobile starting with the G1
