Started with HTC .. my kid just got his first (smart?)phone, my original TILT. haha thing is still working perfectly. After the tilt i really stepped up in the world with a FUZE, wow that thing worked great (but will only take being thrown across a room about 5x by my calculations.
Got my Captivate yesterday, WOW.

Ok time to put more HD vids on the phone...
BRAVO to samsung for providing the user WITH useable storage too! nice to have 13 gigs to play with... HTC may have lost a customer for reals with this phone in my hand. (i lasted 1 years w/ the fuze, i may never flash this one - have to see how sluggish it gets as i fill it up)
Looking forward to helping out w/ testing and **** again around here.

Hey now! I enjoy my Captivate just as much as him. Just because AT&T is about as reliable as Virgin Mobile's service in terms of providing upgrades doesn't make this any less of an amazing phone. Out of all the phones that XDA has developed for (That I've owned), this one certainly takes the cake for the most developed. I hope you enjoy your captivate! And if something goes wrong, USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION. >

i speculate the push to 2.2 starts sometime in the 1.5-2 weeks after the mobile ap app becomes available on the 13th

Overall it is a good phone.
A few aggravating quirks, but hey, I have yet to see anything perfect
Congrats on your new addition
Glad you like it man. Great phone; just go and get a custom launcher (I have about 6 of them lol) and have at it; if you don't like TouchWiz anyway.
But yea, if you ever get bored of the phone you should definitely install a custom rom on the phone; makes it that much better.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
I actually used stock for about 4 months or so. Partly was because I was unaware about custom roms, and when I found out about then I was hesitant to flash just because I never done it before. I'm pretty technological, built my own computers, overclocked and ect, but flashing was new territory.
That said, I am absolutely stunned with my phone now. I didn't think it was sluggish before, but now I can't believe I edited that long. I really wish I took a video of my phone at stock and then flashed. Incredible.
Basically, any lag or slight slow down your captivate will experience will disappear with a new rom.
Samsung Captivate
Firefly 2.0.5
SpeedMod Q Big Mem
JK4 Modem
The more apps you have, the more you do, the more it starts to chug.
Big time.
My brother got one (and has since returned it), but after three weeks, that thing was unusable.

It gets pretty sluggish after you have a few apps on it. I would definitely recommend flashing it because the stock just sucks...

Definetly recommend flashing it. Do your research first, but you will really know see the difference and come to the realization that most do...should have done this sooner.

Glad you are loving your new Captivate. GPS aside, I think hardware wise it is a fantastic phone, but only realized this after flashing ROMs developed by the guys here at XDA. The corporate/tech support behind the Captivate is what most of us gripe about. Flash away and donate, as you will surely be pleased with what you find. Good work deserves reward.

haha reading this made me LOL. i was the same way. super happy with the phone when i got it. a week later, got frustrated with GPS not working. another week later, rooted phone to get rid of all the ATT crap that kept popping up. Then i decided to hang in there. 3 months and i wanted to throw the phone in a lake.
then i flashed w/ serendipity w/ speedmod and damn it was awesome! shows what the phone really can do. too bad samsung couldnt figure it out.
HaHa
better keep that can and string around. when the frustration sets in you'll need it

Hi guys,
I have a newbie question again.. I just want to know what are the common problems the captivate have?
If you were given a chance to replace your fone, will it still be captivate or other fone? and why?
Did you regretted that you get captivate and not the other fone?
So far for me, it's the best smartphone out there..
Any input is allowed.. But hope not a bad one.. Thanks for reading..

some people love it and some hate it.
the hardware is awesome the software kinda sucks.stupid rfs file system that the distros no longer use for obvious reasons.
I bought mine in july and its now jan, still waiting for the "soon to be released 2.2".
the new samsung looks awesome but I will most likeley switch to htc because sammy has made me wait toooooooooo long for something I should already have.
It seems like the only main common problem is decent GPS. I've had good GPS since I bought the thing, others have never had good GPS no matter what ROMs or Fixes they tried.
I went with the Captivate because I had to stay on ATT and didn't want an iPhone, but I'm happy with my choice.
The gps is an easy fix using lbttest mode. I get 12-30 satellites. So no complaint there. I've fixed it several times, but older captivates have the issue of a bad gps unit.
I'd say no problems here except for stock rom.

If I had to keep it stock i would probably hate it. There are quite a few custom ROM's that make this phone unbelievable. I personally don't for stock so it works great for me. I've had iPhones for years and thought iphone was the best phone until I got my android. Its a major hassle just to JB the iphone. I have already replaced and stayed with Captivate and have gotten a few more since then. I currently use Cezar's SE ROM and its flawless. Awesome GPS/battery/speed/stability. If you like a good kick in the pants you can flash the OC'd GT version.

Its one of those things when you do it you'll probably think its a different phone from every aspect. If you research and educate yourself you're good to go. I'm yet to brick a phone and I flash about 2-3 different roms weekly. Backup your original ROM before you start flashing. If you love it now once you customize it you'll probably want to sleep with it

Who loves their g2x based mostly on the work the devs contribute? From the guys that build from source code to guys that try to theme through images, xml, and smali , to guys that port working stuff from phone to phone so more users can expatience it.
I love my g2x. I cant think of anything that I want to change within reason, and it got to where it's at by lots of trial and error and help from devs that stepped me thrpugh some processes.
My G2x runs on weapon 2.3.3 rom, and custom themed by my partner and in...super smooth, no reboots, everything that I use works., quick ui. Battery life is hard for me to gauge because I'm always plugging in to push files all day.
You don't wanna know where this was sent from.
I love mine so much! It's such an amazing phone. <3
Great Phone
I love my G2x as well! Running latest CM7 nightly with bluesteel theme by team carbon but I have flashed just about every ROM there is (Crackflasher and this phone handles them all with ease.
Definitely interested in the Nexus Prime but I will still keep my G2x close by. Thanks for your hard work mmapcpro!
After flashing miui rom on it, things just went from bad to awesome!! Now i can really say god i love this phone!
I absolutely HATE this phone! Jk, I cant think of any other phone I'd rather have. The dev support on this thing is amazing!

I have used windows mobile devices since 2004. My last windows phone broke about a year ago and had to use a &%$#berry. In June I upgraded. Knowing I wanted a android but not really knowing the fist thing about it. Sure I had played around with a few devices kind of knew what I was looking for. I got the phone and loved it from the fist min. I will admit this not a beginners or novice users phone.....any how still just as fun now as minute one.

I took a chance on a second hand one and had it shipped to Thailand before I saw it (reputable supplier I have purchased many devices from). I can only see some minor screen bleed on all black in a dark environment. Other than that I am quite happy with my G2X. Sim unlocked it with a $2.99 code from eBay, updated with LG Updater to 2.3.3 with a minor glitch that was easily overcome, no reboots, no lockups, no problems at all. Just a super fast, super charged phone that loves to eat its battery for lunch. I can get through a day at work but when I get home my beloved G2X cries out for food.
BTW, whoever has said you cannot update without a T-Mobile number is wrong. I had a Thai sim in mine (TOT3G) when I ran the updater and when it got to the part where it said "checking number" it flew right past it. So the guy on Walmart Family Mobile who said his failed on the number check must have had some other issue causing the update to fail.
I'm really enjoying this phone! I made the move from AT&T and a HTC Aria, which I did love. My wife is having a harder time getting to like her phone though. She previously was using a 3GS but by switching to T-mobile we are saving almost 40 a month over AT&T. I know you can unlock Iphones for T-mobile but her 3GS has an upgraded baseband and latest firmware which prevents an untethered Jailbreak and unlock, so no Iphone migration.
I love this phone. I'm running cm7 trigger2 2.3.5 with go launcher, launcher pro+, and Regina launcher. This phone performs flawlessly on all three launchers.
Big ups to G2x!!!

I currantly have the vibrant and have a broken screen....tmobile says insurance will most likely send me a sgs,so my question is for those that went to the sgs from a vibrant.....how do you like the sgs compared to the vibrant....i for one know ill miss the large 16 gig internal memory....dont care for the ffc video chat that i know i wont use.....but over all whats your take?
Well, the galaxy s 4g has, well 4g. It does not currently have CM7 (Hope that changes soon!). But its Gps is not finicky and we have some great devs here, but not as many as the vibrant, but they work hard man! If you decide to flash roms, the minute you get the phone, you should start reading up on flashing roms correctly! or else you might brick, like I did to my first sgs4g We all love this phone, and are trying to get it even better, you will witness a legendary phone in the making if you read these fourms frequently! All in all, the sgs4g is almost excactly like the vibrant, but it has a bit more undiscovered tricks up its sleeve, i hope you enjoy the phone when you get it!
You know me. I'd pray for the og vibrant man. Development is way ahead there and you've got 15GB's more internal memory.
You can add the 2nd gen ffc to the vibrant. 4G is nice, but not crazy different. May be a moot point where you live too.
The sgs is great... Gingerbread ROM's are great too, but the kernel is killing things like cm7/miui.. And all those ROM's based off those don't exist here.

Thanks Callip i was definately looking for your opinion i am praying to get a vibrant back due to i use my lrg internal for transfering movies and such with my co-workers and friends,i basically use my phone as a computer and i will miss it
Although i really like miui i can live without it lol.....atm im actually running the sgs rom with voodoo lmao i kinda like it but i dont know if ill be happy with the phone
^ better go ahead and pick up a class 6 16GB card man.
Gingerbread roms are great on the sgs4g. Valhalla has been very stable/fast for me. If you like the stock + voodoo, this will not be an issue for you.
I personally miss miui and cm7. But I was a flashaholic. I am not realizing my personal life is better without all the fun my phone provided, haha.
From your last comment, memory can be fixed with the external card. Maybe it won't be so bad for you after all.

wtf is this question? really. wtf?! you had a vibrant now you getting a vibrant plus. can't you figure out if its a good deal or not? ugh...
I had a Vibrant until I broke the screen. The 4g is more stable when overclocked and it since mid september it has a semi-official gingerbread 2.3.5 build from Samsung. Last time I checked, Vibrants only had 2.3.5 in CM7 and Miui flavors and they were all ported from someplace else. It's complicated to go from stock to 2.3.5 but it seems that once you've got a 2.3.5 rom installed you can just flash later 2.3.5 roms and they will work. Yesterday I flashed one on top of another without wiping anything and the phone worked fine. At this point wi-fi in gingerbread is feeble but we didn't have the GPS problems Vibrants had. The 4g depends on whether where you are has good 4g service.

Well, the OP clearly states:
"how do you like the sgs compared to the vibrant"
Perhaps you did not have the og vibrant and then the gs4g. I know, because you wouldn't say Vibrant plus.... this phone has good and bad qualities, esp compared to a later model. I was jumping for joy when I got the 4G.... and then it was followed with "Oh... really... dang.... Oh..... ouch"
Like I said earlier though, based off what he said (minus the flashing a lot), the sgs4G is a great phone, and will be for him too.
There is shortbus riders in every forum lol I expect that
I am interested in potentially owning a G2X and I have been doing research on it.
I hear that it freezes all the time, text don't come through, and it is just a pain.....and then i hear people have no problems with it at all.
Is it really that bad? I don't really care about specs or else i'd get a sensation, amaze or galaxy s2.
It is free right now(Along with the Sidekick 4g...which i was considering getting but i've heard even worse stuff about that one)
But is this phone truly that bad?
It really depends on what you are going to do with it.
If you are planning on rooting it and installing a custom rom, kernel, etc then a lot of those issues will be fixed and the phone will operate very well.
On the other hand if you arent going to root it then it has got some serious problems. The code on this phone is ****, so that potentially leads to a lot of problems. Basically if you are not going to root it, i would not suggest it.
In the end this phone has serious potential and that potential can be unlocked if you root it and add roms, but if not it has too many problems and just isnt worth the hassle.
I've never had a single problem with my g2x. I think most of the issues are in the early production ones.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I had mine for over 5 months before i rooted it and installed CM. The issues were minimal for me and i loved the device. Why did i end up rooting it and putting on a custom rom? Not to fix issues, but to be daring (using the term loosely here), and have fun with my device. I actually liked it so much, I bought a second. What were my issues? Lockups now and again, but it seemed to be heat related (ie when plugged in while driving my car), causing to remove the battery and turn it back on. Never had an issue with texts not coming through.
I also got my original for free...and to me, the random battery pull wasn't a show stopper (my palm running WebOS would lock up too now and again) and was easily overlooked due to the specs and capabilities of the device.
On a side note...I still see a random battery pull with CM installed, so custom roms isnt a fix all for this device either...but i still love it(them). Other roms may address other issues, but I havent tried any others so i cant say from personal experience. I have also played with a Sidekick 4G...negative captain...it drove me crazy.
/2 Cents
[edit]
CM=CyanogenMod
seeing the OP has 3 posts under his belt, I wanted to clarify that CM stands for CyanogenMod, a custom rom. Just on the off chance he is unclear on acronyms around here.

You'll be fine man. Most of those problems occurs in the first batch of G2x' when it first came out. Good luck.

I will put it this way, if I had the chance to get this phone for free with my past experience with it, is a yes. Would I pay 200$ and re-up on my contract... not a chance in hell. With the SGS II out right I would go for that or an HTC phone. For free this phone is more then good enough though.
Free G2X? Worth it.
Making bad decision's one at a time.
I would say if you get the phone and put Cyanogenmod on it, it's awesome, when I stuck with the stock ROM, it would freeze overnight, now that I have Cyanogenmod I have no problems whatsoever
My g2x is very stable overclocked to 1.6 with morphic's kernel. Cyanogenmod with the Trinity kernel is stable, fast, and very fun.
I paid for mine and it was worth every penny.

If you are getting this phone for free DO IT! In the end the phone works great and plays every game I load up, rooting and adding a custom rom is a must, I find that weapon is a good rom for the average user, the only thing I didnt like was the back cover but thats just me being picky
i think i was one of the lucky ones to get the first of the 2nd batch of the g2x. i did not have any problems with my phone but i rooted it after about a week. I have to say that the custom rooms are buttery smooth. You have so much more flexibility and it just creates for a much much better user experience. The stock was choppy, not as smooth, and was not very customizable. so i would say if you intend to put custom roms on it, this phone is perfect. if you want to keep it stock then i would go for the galaxy s2.
Every phone will have its issues. If its free, sure get it. If u got the dough to spare then go for the s2
the funny thing is i ask myself the same question when i bought mine your answer well i would buy it again i have had no issues im running a quadrant with phoneixblood rom trinity 15 kernal ext 4 at 6120 my battery last all day with moderate use with juice defender i think you would be totally happy with it its so simple to root like 5 minutes several very good roms for phone cyanogenmod eaglesblood phoneixblood miui you wont be dissapointed if you get it and you need help rooting flashing or anything just inbox me on here i gladly help in any way
Coming from someone that still has a release day phone, the only issues the stock phone ever gave me was stone random lockups, like 10 in the 2 months i had it stock. And for me that issue was fixed completely fixed with a flash to cyanogen mod. I'm really happy with this phone, and i honestly would buy it again even with the original $200 price tag.

I had a lot of issues with this phone stock but once i rooted and did all the stuff to it its running fine now.
I got my phone about a month ago. And yes, those lock ups or screen of deaths occurred a couple times in a few days. Rooted it and flashed a different rom/kernel and now it works wonderful. I believe it is the stock kernel that causes the issues.
My friend had this phone before and he hated it because of all the issues. He then went on to get another phone and told me not to waste my time.... It's unfortunate he didn't read up about rooting the device. This phone has awesome specs, and for the price of $100 that I got it for, I wanted to give it a try.
No problems for this phone whatsoever. Its a good phone I'd say.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the great devs here who made my Captivate worth having. I never felt my phone was ever lesser than any other phone, thanks to the devs I am running the latest JB (4.2.2) on my Cappy right now. Also a huge thanks to the community here who helped overcome my noobishness and solved all my problems( The yellow triangle icon ) .

Yeah. But he should install the underground, unofficial Guinea Pig AntiReversifier Downshifter app before flashing any new rom on his cappy. That way, he won't indirectly disable his new phone due to the Post Captivate Remorsifier bug that exists in all newer phones, including iPhones and Windoze models.

I'm using an HTC One X+ right now. I'd like to have the HTC One, but I wont be eligible for a while. I went from the SGS Cappy to the SGSII and on to the HOX+. As a matter of fact, my oldest son is going to upgrade to the One and give me his old SGSIII. So with any luck, I'll be the owner of a Cappy, an SGSIII and an HOX+.
Best of luck to you, have fun with what ever you decide on.
Steve
To the OP's cappy, GoodBye and Thanks for the service!
Personally my cappy may be right behind. Just quickly, I had CM9 on mine, and had the low storage (cache issue) after a while, and used "DATAFIX". Well the warnings went away but so did every Google process from acting correctly I restored to CM7.1-Captivate and it is ok but battery time is worse now. Plus the cache being so small and having issues with installing apps etc almost has me just trying an S4 stock and see what happens

This happened to me too, might be the same problem. I had a discussion with a fascinate owner about it and eventually fixed my cappy, see below. After this I was able to resume my flashing addiction with no low storage problems.

Semi-retirement
I retired my Cappy after 2.5 years of service back in June of 2013.
We went from stock Eclair, to Froyo, to Gingerbread. I left stock to load a rooted kernel. It was maybe a month later that I installed CM9, which I stuck to until soft-bricking the phone. I no longer recall how that happened other than that I wasn't modding at the time. At that time I purchased an SGS3 and was happy with the improved hardware.
Researching ROMs for the SGS3 led me to pull the Cappy out of the drawer and wonder about it. Yesterday I pulled the Cappy out of storage and revived it with GB 2.3.4. Soon to follow will be some variant of JB depending on what looks promising. I expect to be using it as a media player while working on parachutes and skydiving. I use either of two navigation apps that utilize offline map files and do not need data connections, so I may also use it as a navigation device while on my bicycle. It could also serve as a backup phone for myself on AT&T or for family members on Straight Talk (I am led to believe.)
Farewell
I just got 2 Gt-I9100s and by the time I got done modding the first one I realized that visually It looks and feels like my cappy only more than twice as fast lol.
Almost everything I know about smartphones and android I learned on these I897s. It will always be a favorite right up there with my RockBoxed sansa fuse media player.

Hahaha, when i change my Cappy i say "Goodbye Good Friend" i come from the Nexus S and the Nexus One :silly: and i love the Cappy
The cappy started it all for me as well and was the devi ce that led me to XDA, rooting, and ROMs, thanks sammy for the cappy. Oh, to whomever out there that stole that device from me i hope that you actually used it and not just made a quick buck. You took memories and my favorite device and learning tool from me. HOPE YOU ENJOY AND/OR ENJOYED THE COME-UP. :crying:
I've switched phones, but I don't think I'll ever sell my Cappy, as it's been too good to me.
you should let it retire.
note 3, oppo is the best choice ^^
Hasta Luego
I too just said goodbye to my cappy. I really loved that phone (still one of the best looking android phones to date), but the $12 trade-in value was just enough to secure the $200 rebate for a pre-order Galaxy Note 4. Tried every other old phone in my arsenal before sadly saying goodbye to an old friend.
Huge props to Pawitp, AdamOutler, and the dozens of other devs who made what was frankly a clunky device into an outstanding phone. You good sirs are the reason Android is successful (and a lot of fun). :good:
Adios maybe
I just posted a similar piece concerning the Cappy ha! I did the same thing a couple years back, turned my back on the phone and sold it to finance an SII purchase but found myself reflecting on the memories of it, like some crappy 70's love song sang in fluttery notes by some hippy chick. Thusly, I bought another. First loves, hopefully sometimes they can be rekindled ... harhar.
I still pull mine out occasionally to tinker with. It's currently running CM 11. Still laggy as all hell.
still got it
still have my cappy and it's still running strong with CM11 nightlies....waiting for it to get some Lollipop goodness on CM12...fingers crossed...my first love...the one that started it all for me since my noob/softbricking/freakingoutat3amdays....lol....sigh
