I have ubuntu 11.04, I plug my xoom with usb but it doesn't recognize it, I tried everything in terminal, but couldn't make it work.
does anyone know how to make it work with ubuntu 11.04?

I got the same problem on my aptosid distri - doesn't really work! Try "Wifi Explorer" - not so fast, but works.....

How to Install Ubuntu on Your Desire/Android

First sorry for my English
All credits are for zedomax, who has gotten it to work in Nexus One and for Desire is practically the same.
Sorry about "h t t p" of link adress I am very new here.

For now, I've only gotten it to work with Windows 7 and "CyanogenMod 5.0.8" and "Defrost2.0c" ROMs. The rom is important for get this works.
Practically almost all the steps are the same as in the guide of nexus one by zedomax. Well go:
Before anything, download ubuntu.zip from original HOWTO and unzip it.
Now download the updated script from zedomax.

and overwrite the bootubuntu file of unzipped ubuntu.zip
1. First, you will need a rooted Desire.
zedomax say that you must have the latest version of busybox 1.16.1 but in Defrost2.0c works with 1.16.0 and cyanogenmod has 1.16.1. So we ignore this step from original guide.
2. Once you have a rooted Android phone, you will be able to run Ubuntu under Chroot.
3. Copy these six files from ubuntu.zip over into your SD card’s root folder under folder name “ubuntu“
4. Put your Desire in recovery mode. And connect it to your computer via USB.
5. I am assuming you've already installed the Android SDK (while you were rooting your phone) so let's head to your Android SDK directory and load up ADB Shell.
For Windows, go to your Android SDK Tools directory such as c:\sdk\tools and type "adb shell".
(FYI, cd is the command you can use to browse to your sdk\tools directory. For Windows, do cd \sdk\tools and for Mac/Linux, do cd /sdk/tools.
For linux and Mac, go to your Android SDK Tools directory such as /sdk/tools and type "./adb shell" or it can also be "sudo ./adb shell" for Ubuntu.
6. Once you are in the ADB shell, you should see a “#”symbol. Great, let’s start bootin’ Ubuntu right away.
7. Next, type "mount system", press enter and then type "mount sdcard". If you get this "mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 on /sdcard failed: Device or resource busy" ignore it, sdcard is already mounted.
8.- Next, type "cd /sdcard/ubuntu"
9.- Now we will write separate commands instead of using a script to see if something has gone wrong easily. Copy and paste each line separately and hit Enter at the end of each command.
rm /system/bin/fsrw <--(this problably return an error, ignore this)
rm /system/bin/bootubuntu <--(this problably return an error, ignore this)
rm /system/bin/unionfs <--(this problably return an error, ignore this)
rm /system/bin/mountonly <--(this problably return an error, ignore this)
cp -f fsrw /system/bin
cp -f bootubuntu /system/bin
cp -f unionfs /system/bin
cp -f mountonly /system/bin
cd /sdcard/ubuntu
chmod 4777 * <--(this problably return an error, ignore this)
cd /system/bin/
chmod 4777 *
cd /
umount sdcard
umount system
exit
Now select "reboot system now" from recovery menu of your Desire. When android fully loaded you need load up again ADB Shell.
For Windows, go to your Android SDK Tools directory such as c:\sdk\tools and type "adb shell".
Type "su" to enter superuser mode. Is very important not to forget this!
type "mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system"
type "mkdir /data/local/mnt"
10. Once that completes, type "bootubuntu" to "chroot" or boot into your new Ubuntu on your Android!
If you get the "root_localhost:/#" sign, congratulations! You've just installed Ubuntu on your Desire/Android phone!
the hardest part is complete!. From now, follows the original guide for the "nexus one" to get access to Gnome (visual desktop).
Other problems like keyboard mapping can fix it follow the original post from nexus one forum:

humm, are you get any error in this part?
cp -f fsrw /system/bin
cp -f bootubuntu /system/bin
cp -f unionfs /system/bin
cp -f mountonly /system/bin
and, where are you launching the bootubuntu command? You need do it from adb shell (at least until you set gnome) or terminal client directly from your phone, like better terminal emulator. Don't forget do "su" before launch bootubuntu. If it still does not work I recommend you start again the guide

[Q] MTP on linux Ubuntu

anyone been able to sync music/video's to there transformer from a linux machine ?
I have all of the mtp stuff set up for other devices, but i cannot get the transformer to show up ...
Any help would be appreciated
I don't believe the TF is an MTP device... it simply mounts as storage. Drag/Drop your music.

It is actually an MTP device. This allows us to access the storage area without making it unavailable to the device like a USB mount does.
Here's how to get your Transformer to show up in Ubuntu for example. This includes stuff you will have setup but this will help others too.

$ sudo apt-get install mtpfs
$ sudo mkdir /media/transformer
$ sudo chmod 775 /media/transformer
$ sudo mtpfs -o allow_other /media/transformer
You should now be able to see the device under /media/transformer
To remove the device type:

You may also need add a rule for the device to see it in Ubuntu:

My mistake, I was completely unaware that they had made this change in honeycomb.
mtpfs works great, I've got it working on my gentoo netbook for managing music and videos on my Creative Xen X-Fi.

fstab is for automounts at system startup, I just tried adding an entry for mtpfs but I got 'An error occurred while mounting /media/transformer' so I can't help with that.
I could care less if it auto mounts I just want it to mount at all. so you have tested what you posted above and it definitely works? if so, that is awesome.

i got it to work by starting a new mount point /media/tf101 and setting permissions on it.
I can't get this to work consistently, some times I can see all of the folders in the internal storage some times I only see the playlist folder and sometimes I see no folders and the "Transport endpoint is not connected" error message.
It is also worth noting that everytime I set up a new mountpoint it works but getting the files system to mount again is very unreliable.
Any ideas what this might be?
Don't really fancy setting up a new mount point every I want to transfer files onto the eee pad.

I just use gmpt on Ubuntu (in the rare ocasions I need it - I mostly get files from Samba share).
Ok, so i got things mounted, but when i try to copy a 5gb file from my 2tb drive to my transformer, it seems to eat up space on my os disk when it tries to transfer. This definitely wont work for me as I only have a couple gigs of space free on my OS disk, which is meant for speed, not lots of storage (my 2tb drive is for that). Why is this happening? Some sort of temporary/caching action going on? Seems like a major design flaw with mtpfs if this is how it works. =(

gmtp doesnt seem to be able to see my transform. =(
I use QuickSSHD on my Transformer and sshfs on Linux. It is possible to use public key authentication. For pushing large files I use adb push. MTP works very unreliable. Sometimes files are randomly moved to different directories if they are recognized as media files. So after a few experiments I stay away from mtpfs.

Has anyone figured this out yet, because this is really pissing me off. I understand the benefits of mtp, but if I can't use it linux (Ubuntu) to linux (Android), what's the point?
I use Ubuntu 10.04, AMD-64 bit and gMTP works pretty well. I did have to compile it because I understand that for some Linux versions it is broken.
I'm having problems too with Asus Transformer (Tested on Ubuntu 11.04 64 and 32bits).
I'm unable to transfer big files (like HD videos), it seems the transfer is completed but no file is stored. On the 64bits box I get messages about "the device is not connected" after trying to transfer big files, and I have to remount the device to be able to browse through folders.
Ok, here it's a tip: Enable USB Debugging under Settings → Applications
It seems it works enabling that. I have to do more tests with large files since mtpfs uses my root partition as temporally storage and I run out of free space

If you are using Fedora with Gnome3, like me.
yum install -y gnomad2
Since there is no mtpfs in the packge repo, use this or compile mtpfs.

Debian on droid 2 / droid 2 global

First off, This is probably in the wrong space, simply because I haven't reached my proper post count. (Too much of a lurker, sorry) but I think I've found something that will make fellow D2 / D2G smile, and I couldn't help but share this.
Here is where I got the idea from:

Unfortunately, the debian-img.zip link is no longer functional (at least it was the last time I checked). No big deal, you can get it from here: Debian-img.zip.
Download that, and make sure you have your Android sdk tools installed. You will need root and busybox. Connect phone to computer, memory card mode, create folder called debian, and unpack the debian-img.zip file into the debian folder on the sdcard. When complete, switch it to charge only mode and now for the fun to begin.
Open the command prompt, navigate to sdk\tools folder, and type adb devices. If you don't see your phone listed as a device (will be a bunch of letters and numbers) switch it to pc mode, run adb devices again.
Once it shows up, type the following:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
export bin=/system/bin
export img=/sdcard/debian/debian.img
export mnt=/data/local/debian
mkdir /data/local/debian

You can't just copy/paste that whole block of code due to the busybox commands. Copy and paste one at a time. I also found that you can't make a script with that code either (please prove me wrong!) and have it work on the droid2 or d2g without errors.
Once you put in the last command, hit ctrl+c, and then open AndroidVNC, using the following data (similar to the debondroid thread):
nickname: debian
Password: password
Address: localhost
Port: 5901
Then connect!
Issues:
I have found that not only can't I use a script, I also cannot use a terminal emulator or even connectbot to put in the commands line by line. I am unsure why, but this only seems to work when I use the adb shell through a computer/usb connection.
You may have issues using USB SDCARD mode after you have run this code. This is fixed by rebooting the phone (as this causes debian to stop being run, and the img is being run off the sdcard, which is mounted with busybox into the system). Otherwise, all other phone functions work perfectly.
A neat little bonus: I found that I am able to access the internet through a browser in debian using nothing more than my 3g data connection.

im dieing to get this running, i have D2G running miui ics, first i cant download debian-img.zip, it wont complete download. after searching and downloading debian arm iso and renaming img i try your instructions and get hung up at

It's possible the latest ICS leak could be the problem (I had only tried this on an old Fission build, stock (both) and CM7). However, sometimes when I would reset the phone and run the commands again, it would throw me an error in the same spot you're having. It was wierd (as it JUST worked). I flashed to a different ROM to see what was up and it was happy again--but only through one power cycle. There might be a spot in this code I'm missing, but the error it throws acts as if I were trying to mount the img in the wrong loop block. This could be to the loop block already having the residual data (from the forced shutdown of the phone not allowing a tru closure of Debian), and if that's the case It would make sense if we could wipe that loop block (del and recreate it) through ADB. I haven't had time, but I'll look into it tonight.
As for the img, I'll also look into that tonight (on my phone currently).
I really apperciate the speedy reply, I'm not showing ext2 or ext3 on miui ics, do you know of a working GB rom that debian works with. I really apperciate your work in getting this going, I'm surprised its not developed by more people as the idea of having a desktop computer in your pocket is appealing. Thanks again
That's the beauty of this workaround: D2/D2G doesn't have ext3 support. That's why I had to use this method and frankly could be one of the reasons that there are those out of the blue errors that don't make sense. I need time so I can get screenshots up (to prove I'm not lying), but this will work with the img file linked.
For a good GB build, you can try the latest CM7 build at rootzwiki, or the stock GB update.
I tried again and almost everything went smoothly until i punched in "fi" and it gave me an "Unknown hz value! <80> Assume 100." i finished the instructions and tried to fire up androidvnc and tried to connect and i get " VNC connection failed! localhost" so im going to try and attach a bmp of my cmd window. i am looking into the unkown hz value but so far am stumped. "change ext of file to bmp or png"
also im assuming the debian img which i was able to successfully download is a arm distro?
omg it worked!!!! i redid the steps like i had done i was still getting vnc connection error, then i changed the address in vnc from "localhost" to "127.0.0.1" and it works!!! thanks man

Debian img is indeed for ARM. And I haven't seen that error at all before, so I don't know what to tell you. Was working on school projects all night and just ran out of time, so didn't get to fire it up for screenshots, but it looks like you got it to work.
The next thing I'm gonna try is to put it in script form, and I think the solution is to put the busybox parts into a seperate script (android seems to like parsing the scripts all at once, so this borks the busybox commands).
I noticed that its busybox killing the script as well, good luck on compiling one that is compatable i will do wht i can on my end though i dont expect it to be much, thank you for putting this up, one more notch android has over the big apple

I find a solution after update to last new version

After download and share fail with samba windows or mac sharing, you need to mount from file manage > remote storage
After fix permission go to adb folder and type :
"adb shell"
"cd /mnt/rfs0"
"./su"
"cd /"
"ln -s /mnt /storage"
Next step go to console and type :
adb kill-server
adb shell /storage/rfs0/pwn
Next : Install apk package from phone , Reboot Phone and now your phone is rooted!
Update from Play Market SuperSu and go.

I gave this a try earlier today. I scoured through the forum to find that the new Ubuntu doesn't install ADB drivers by default, so you need to do this manually.
Anyway, I attempted to do it and got all the way to ./su. It then prompted me with the message "./su cannot execute - Permission denied". Obviously from there I can't link /mnt to /storage and I can't run pwn because it looks for the /storage folder.
If you have any suggestions how to get ./su running, let me know.

First, you need to change permissions of su:
chown root:root su
chmod 6755 su
then run adb shell and remount / filesystem ro rw:
mount -o rw,remount /
now you can create symbolic link and run the exploit.
You can also perform rooting manually (without creating symlink and running pwn):
remount /system partition to rw: mount -o rw,remount /system
and copy su to /system/xbin, make sure that it has correct permissions (rwsr-sr-x) and that's it.
Now you can remount partitions back to ro.
Install supersu or superuser (whatever makes you happy, just check if it works correctly, superuser didn't work for me, it didn't prompt about root permission for any app, it just gave it, no matter how configured it was), Then install busybox, if you need one.
And you're done.

Thanks, I think this is exactly what I am looking for per this thread. Unfortunately, I don't quite have the knowledge (yet) to completely understand what you mean. I've rooted several phones, but never had to use ADB before so am unfamiliar with it. Also, what do you mean by this: "After download and share fail with samba windows..."?

By reading this link you will know hot to setup samba installation on a UBUNTU live cd. After doing that on your phone you should go to your FILE MANAGER --> remote storage and add the samba share to your phone. On the UBUNTU live cd, on your samba folder you should do this:

sudo chown root:root pwn
sudo chmod 6755 pwn

Wow, thanks for this. I was considering trying to condense down the instructions myself before I did this, but you beat me to it, and did a better job than I would have, considering I'm a novice at this stuff.
So your method uses a linux boot for samba, but then the rest is done on windows. Question: could you do the adb stuff on Linux? Seemed like some of the posts in the atrix threads were doing it that way, and I was just curious. I have mint 14-64 bit on a couple of my machines, as well windows, and was thinking this would be an opportunity to learn it a little better.

well that sounds a bit intimidating but thanks for spelling it out. I'll try to work up the nerve and make some time to give this a try.
Just curious, but why can't this be compressed into a one click batch file like before?

If your bootloader is unlocked, you can easily root. You don't need any exploits etc.
Install TWRP, it will automatically root the device. Or, install CWM and then install SuperSU afterwards, which will root the device.

Can you share what you did? Instructions seem to say that I need to install GooManager? The summary of GooManager says I need root to use it. TIA.

After download and share fail with samba windows or mac sharing, you need to mount from file manage > remote storage
After fix permission go to adb folder and type :
"adb shell"
"cd /mnt/rfs0"
"./su"
"cd /"
"ln -s /mnt /storage"
Next step go to console and type :
adb kill-server
adb shell /storage/rfs0/pwn
Next : Install apk package from phone , Reboot Phone and now your phone is rooted!
Update from Play Market SuperSu and go.

I like TWRP but CWM in my opinion is better (more supported).

Yes. This can be done in Linux. I did it entirely with a LIVE USB. However, adb might not be installed by default (on mine it was not). To install it, do the following:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot

Either use GooManager or the fastboot flash method. I think you do need to be rooted in order for GooManager to get the permissions it requires to flash recovery... So in that case, the only way initially to flash might be fastboot flash... Sorry.

Not even sure what this means. Any zip you can flash with CWM, you should be able to flash with TWRP. No?
They're both recoveries. One is touch-based, one isn't.

I am trying to run through these steps. For starters, when I enter the 'adp shell' I do not have a /mnt/rfs0 directory. The shared samba directory actually mounts at /storage/rfs0. No biggie. I go to that directory to run ./su. The su command runs, and I can see a pop up notification on my phone indicating the adb shell has been granted admin rights. The problem is that the ./su command never returns. As a matter of fact, if I just left it sit there, I get the admin rights pop up notification on my phone about once per minute so it seems like the su command is in some loop.
At this point I am stuck. I cant remount my file system as read/write without SU. I can run the ./su command in a different process, either in another adb shell or with the ./su& command but that does me no good as I cant execute any root commands in that same process.
Is there something that needs to change with the su command for the newer version my phone is running? I am running 9.8.2Q-122_XT897_FFW-5.

[Q] Root impossible? (Turbo-x Strike II)

I have this tablet from that greek label named turbo-x(model:strike ii)(not that there is any chance to know of) which there are no windows drivers for, anywhere.
Framaroot doesn't work for it,
windows root can't work for it without drivers
and for linux i tried cydia impactor since linux doesn't need the drivers, which pops up the error "mount: read only file system" when i try to root.
I'm not linux expert or expert of any kind so i messed around with the terminal as much as i could in order to make cydia impactor work, and used $sudo su $adb remount $adb root $adb shell #mount -o rw,remount /system but nothing works, i get the same read only file system on the terminal as well.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
