AT&T has been tricking me this whole time?! - HTC Inspire 4G

I just wanted to share something I experienced last night. I recently rooted and flashed a few roms. (ARHD, LeeDroid). I noticed that the "H" icon at the top would toggle between "H" and "3G". I found out the that network was switching from HSDPA to UMTS and back. I thought this was an issue with the Radios / RILs I was using and was going nuts trying to find a good combo. I mean c'mon, it was ALWAYS "H+" for me when I was stock!
Turns out AT&T has been playing tricks on me the whole time. I checked my wifes pure stock Inspire 4G and her network was switching between HSDPA and UMTS too! But her H+ icon was always "H+"... it never changed!
Wow, so the stock AT&T rom always shows "H+" no matter if its UMTS or HSDPA?

Welcome to AT&T. That's what they do.

their '4g" also only goes to like 1.8 lol
On tmo I pull like 8 constantly

so you've finally discovered on your own what some of us have been saying for months? i wish more people would take it upon themselves to understand it like you did. i hope more people see this thread when they start complaining about lack of H+ on custom roms

Mine has been doing this off and on for quite a while whereas my first one didn't . I've also experienced major call dropping issues. My current is a refurb for a defect in the original. We went through the whole troubleshooting blah blah blah, 3 different sim cards too.
I called and spoke w/ retentions after "warranty" refused a new device to keep my service. Retentions was more than happy to credit my acct $90 to cover the cost of a NIB replacement along w/ waived overnight shipping and activation.

Help ! G2X - Poor Reception ? Anyone Else ?

Just got the G2X today.
I'm having extremely poor to no reception at work.
All TMO phones I've used (G1, G2, N1, NS, Mytouch, Mytouch 4G, Galaxy S 4G)
in the past have random reception problems, mostly what I'd say is passable reception at work (in and out of steel buildings).
This G2X is the worst yet.
TMO service walked me thru putting a new sim in and and all.
But it didnt help.
It jumps back and forth from 2G with 2 bars to no service at all.
I didnt like the Galaxy S 4G but it got better reception.
I like this phone, vanilla and all.
Anyone else having this issue ?
If not its going back to TMO.
I got mine this morning at 10 and I have been having great reception! 4 bars with the 4G! And I came from the Samsung 4g also!

How do you know if you got 4G, I got the 4G symbol but network connection says utms and I mainly get around 3mb download on speedtest, but sometimes it goes to 7 or 8 mb down...but still says utms, I thought that was 3G. thanks!
reception
I have had great reception with the G2X. Better than both the G2 and MT4G.
fhaines
I love the phone, but the reception isn't very good in my house. The nexus s had better reception.

G2x's reception is on average about 5 to 10 dB weaker than the MT4G that its replacing but I have full coverage everywhere I go and at home I just use wifi calling so its a non-issue.
I live right by an air force base and I'm sure their signals interfere with cell reception. at&t has tons of towers out here and I had to switch because of the signal interference being so bad.

I still have the MyTouch 4G and Galaxy S 4G and they both have much better
reception than the G2X does.
I'm pretty disappointed.
I'll probably end up returning it and going back to the MyTouch 4G
(I didnt care for the Galaxy S 4G....200mb internal memory what ?).
Especially since its being reported the Sensation is hitting beginning of June.
There are like 6 or 7 "poor reception" threads in here.
Does that mean this is now definitely a known issue ?
All I got was them walking me thru putting in a new sim.
Nothing improved and the tech said oh well it must be just the area you are in.
And this was after me telling her the MyTouch 4G and the Galaxy S 4G didnt
behave in this manner !
I'm leaning towards returning the phone at this point, but I'm going to wait
a week or so and see if any software updates addressing this are forthcoming.
I had a great reception with my G2x. Had 4G throughout the day both at home and office. And on the way from between home and office too.
Unfortunately had to return it for reboot issues.
I am getting only umts. The device shows 4G but still only umts. I have installed new sim card and had it reset on the network and nothing changes. Even my Vibrant will show hspda when in 3g areas but not this phone so far. I have called CS 3 times and finally they have agreed to send out a replacement phone. I also have had random reboots ( it reboots but reboots right back up to the app you were running before the reboot.) and after speaking for only apporx. a minute the phone feels like it will burn your ear., I really want to keep this phone but if the replacement is the same than I will just send it back and wait for the SGS II or the Sensation. Really is a shame as there is so much I really like about it.
Got the phone, what gives. Connectivity sux, shows like 3 bars and 4g but the internet is slow and spotty. What gives? My HD2 runs just fine in the same spot.

I'm not getting any signal issues. My signal has been working great. I'd say return it man and get another one.
No 3G At All ! Whats Up With That ?
Definitely has an issue.
I've never seen it get 3G on this phone.
Only 2G or 4G.
I guess I will be returning the phone.
I really hate to, I like the phone.
But there is definitely something wrong with it.
My G2X has the best signal I have ever had with a T-Mobile phone. I keep a data signal in more places than I did with my Vibrant.

My signal is great, but I'm only seeing 2G or 4G. This does not surprise me, I'm in a HSPA+ area. Why would I ever see 3G?
I can't take the reception jumping from full 4G down to 2G constantly. I ordered the Nexus S and I'm not looking back. Even without support for 14.4, SAMOLED and better service will make up for it.

FWIW, I came from a Nexus S and think the reception is quite a bit better with the G2X.
If you have reception problems you can try 2 things:
1) Go into your mobile network settings and change your network mode to GSM/WCDMA if it isn't already selected. Then click on network operators and do a search. You should see T-Mobile UMTS, T-Mobile GSM and ATT GSM. Once you see the networks it finds, click on select automatically. Before leaving this menu, make sure you click on data roaming. Don't worry, you won't be charged unless your internationally roaming.
2) Swap out your SIM card.

Did all that the 1st day (4-20-11).
Finally returned the phone today after testing the data connectivity
at work today with the MyTouch 4G versus the G2X.
No problem with the MT4G but the G2X had horrible or zero internet.
I will post the results with a new phone tomorrow.
The rep said they just got in a new batch of phones.
I hope the exchange has fixed the issue.
Its mostly wifi hotspotting that its really evident.
I want the phone to work because its the snappiest phone I've ever used.
Maybe it could be the area you are in. Both of my G2x and G2 have solid 4g signal.

G2X Reception

I Live and work in areas that should be 4G according to T-Mobiles coverage map. At work, I'm lucking to even receive a 2g signal and never get a 4g signal at all. At home, I can only get 4g if I select WCDMA Only and don't touch my phone.
I've noticed that my 4g (WCDMA) signal seems to range from -70dBm to -109dBm. As far as GSM I don't know what a good signal is, but I know I loose my signal at about -98 dBm. Interestingly enough, it will go from -85 dBm to -101 dBm in GSM just from me picking it up.
I'm wondering if my phone is getting good reception and if exchanging it might help the problem, but I have no numbers to compare this to. Does anyone get a better WCDMA signal than -69 dBm or have a good signal strength over -109 dBm. Does anyone know what a good signal should be?
I have seen some threads on reception but there are never any numbers to quantify this. To see your signal strength go to phone settings; about phone; status; signal strength.
Any input is appreciated.
There is an app to test for towers and reception . I found I'm not close to one.
Figures.

I have Open Signal Maps installed. Lots of good info. According to the app, I'm a 217 meters from a tower. It actually shows 3 towers within a quarter of a mile. Maybe it's signal overload....

I also have horrible reception with this phone.... my sga4g had a solid full bar 4g signal all the time.. I thought maybe having my g2x rooted and running a custom rom might have something to do with it so I unrooted and went back to stock... but still no good... my phone can sit in one spot and I watch the signal go up and down 4g 2g .... so I locked it to wcdma only .... It stayed on 4g bars still go up and down but now it will just lose network connection... I called Tmo support today and supposedly I'm in an area that has great 4g coverage .... so they say they put in a service order and to stay on 2g for 72 hours and then pull my battery, put it back in and see what happens... love the g2x but starting to regret giving the wife my sgs4g...

Mine does pretty much the exact same thing inside the house and I'm also in an area that should have good 4G coverage. I think the radio is just bugged and hopefully the update(s) will fix that. Good thing the phone has wifi calling.
Interesting. I was looking for a phone number today to call T-Mobile, but their site wasn't working (kept getting no connection). I wonder what staying on 2g is supposed to do. Let me know how it turns out.
I have the same issue! Constant switch between 4G, E and x!
I talked to T-Mobile and they worked on the towers or so they say! It's gotten a lil bit better signal, but not much and not sure if it's because a custom rom!
Thinking about doing an exchange!
Would an UPDATE FIX THE RADIO? Or is it faculty hardware?

It could be faulty hardware, but it could just be a software glitch in the radio baseband/drivers. If a radio update doesn't come with the initial software fix, I'm pretty sure the Gingerbread update should include one.
I too have TERRIBLE reception with the G2x. I'm coming from the HTC G1 and in spots that I used to get great reception with that phone, my G2x bounces all over the place from 4G to NO signal. It's driving me insane that it doesn't stay constant. I thought maybe it was just the towers in my area so I put my SIM back in the G1 and it never lost signal. I put the SIM back in my G2x and set it in the same spot as the G1 and it lost signal twice and toggled back and forth from 2G to 4G within 5 minutes. Hopefully there will be a radio update to fix this issue and that it won't be faulty hardware.
I absolutely LOVE this phone even with the flaws.. i just hope they fix the flaws soon.
I get pretty good reception, though at work I tend to bounce back from 4g and E, but I'm in a building that kills reception. Personally, I think it's the modem. I bet once we start getting newer modems, it's will stop this, but probably at the cost of battery life. My old vibrant got about the same reception, so I don't think it's hardware.
The Tmo tech told me to stay on 2g because my phone seems to be keeping a good consistent 2g signal... its just in the 4g that it doesn't hold a good signal.... I also kept bringing up if she thought that maybe a software upgrade might fix the problem but she didn't even acknowledge that I said anything about it .... I also told her that I read somewhere that for some reason T-Mobile should have given me the sim card that came with the g2x and she said that wouldnt make a difference because i just switched sims when i bought the sgs4g a few months ago and she then gave me free wifi calling...

Replacement Phone
Just an update. I went ahead and got a replacement phone to see if it fixed the problem. The new phone behaves identically. Also, a Samsung 4G user just moved into my office building and he gets 3 bars, which is what i get till I pick the phone up. The thing that bothers me the most is that it will loose so many dBm (bars) when I pick it up.
Does anyone know if a phone cover will fix this issue.

4g or Edge, there still 3g?

I'm over in NYC and just picked this up on Saturday.
From what I've noticed at my desk It typically jumps 4g to E.
Then I got to thinking I don't recall if I've seen a 3g icon yet.
Is 3g still rolled up into 4g for the icon so I could have edge or something not quite 3g but slower than 4g?
I've had this phone for about a year and I have only seen the 3g icon once and that was very brief so I can't comment on the speeds..basically I'm either 4g (mostly) our edge. I'm in Boston btw.
I know this post doesn't help much. I just figured I'd give you my experience.
I've been hearing a lot of things about the 3G/4G stuff. TMobile technically isn't 4G. Its actually 3.5G however they call it 4G. Long Term Evolution (LTE) is really the only true 4G network. I ran into this problem a few months ago before I unlocked my phone. When I unlocked it, I turned on all the frequency bands that this phone is capable of doing. I'm not sure where I got the info from but you can find how to do it on youtube. I hope I helped.

Go to settings, scroll to bottom, select about, select status in the next menu and it should display all the connection info. If i were truly connected to 4g this page would tell me i am connected to hspa+ i assume? Where i live the only "4g" is verizons lte network, so i couldnt possibly be connected to 4g. I think its tmobiles marketing strategy... "hey i have 4g on my phone" - "realy? i have at&t and i dont even have it" - "you should switch" (tech dummies allways get "new fever" first) It could also be because tmobile doesnt want an uproar... Just think how many people would be angry if they bought a phone with 4g in its name and it didnt get 4g service in their area... id like to assume this wouldnt happen but i know it would.

Radio UMTS/HSPA switching bug (3g/4g)

OK, so as I'm sure some of you are seeing, there's an issue with the HSPA/UMTS switching. Like a LOT. I've tried to do Speed Tests, but simply am not able to, because the connection wants to switch from 3g to 4g and back over and over again.
I wanna see how many of you are aware of this and are fed up with it. It's kind of silly. C'mon HTC.
I too have noticed this issue. I'm sure it will be fixed quickly. Such is the penalty to being an early adapter.
Doesn't affect my calling in no way whatsoever. Does mess with my browsing a bit, and after connecting to my home wifi i can say that the switching is definitely the cause.
Hope it gets a quick and tidy fix soon.
yep I see it all the time, doesnt bother me though
I think this is a bug in all HOS

The Galaxy Nexus does this. It switches between 3G and H based on what is being done. If you're not browsing it is on 3G, and if you're browsing and actively using the connection it switches to H. My One S doesn't do this at all unless I'm in a fringe area.
Agreed with the OP, this is annoying, because while the device is in this period of switching there is no data transfer possible, it can stay like this for a long time, sya a few minutes not just a few seconds.

No, it's nothing like that at all. I came from a Nexus S, which had HSPA (not +), and it would switch from 3g to H, and it was never a problem. The issue here is that once it gets to H, it suddenly dies out, switches back to 3g, goes for a sec, dies, switches to 4g, and over and over again. It's nothing like what you're describing, because I'm very familiar with your situation.
In your situation, as you described, it switches based on usage. So, if you're using data a bunch, it'll switch to HSPA+ and stay there until activity dies down. On the One S, it switches back right in the middle of doing data-intensive work. And it ruins the connection.
Let's put it this way: I cant even perform the Speed Test app half the time because the connection gets interrupted and dropped. I've had less than 50% success rate with finishing that test, and I usually only succeed by timing it based on the switching.

Lets see... HSPA and 3g = the same thing. You claiming your Nexus S switches between H and 3g is total utter BS. The H moniker in the notification bar is ONLY a reference to HSPA+ otherwise known by carriers as 4G.
Nexus S does not, never did, never will, switch between H and 3g. It just doesn't have the hardware. Since you are obviously a liar or just wrong, I discount the rest of your post as well.

The Nexus S shows H when using the connection and 3G when not.
AOSP sees UMTS as 3G and HSDPA/HSPA/HSPA+ as H. It will sit on UMTS until you are using mobile data, then it will switch to H.
So yes, the phone can switch between 3G and H while being used. HSPA and variants ARE 3G, but are seen as 4G, thus H. It doesn't even sound like you had a Nexus S so how would you even know what the status bar does?

LOL, with all due respect, you just made yourself look like a fool. If you actually owned a Nexus S or looked up its specifications, it is capable of 7.2mbps HSDPA (H, or sometimes described as 3.5G), whereas UMTS is described at traditional 3G. HSDPA was and has never been considered 3G. It's definitely a step up.
Traditional 3G has never been capable of 7.2mbps downstream. I invite you to do some research here regarding the differences. I'll assume since you had time to time to craft a clever little response, that you can take time to read up on it.
Again, had you actually owned a Nexus S or researched it, you would have found that it typically stays on regular 3G (UMTS...NOT HSPA) when not very active, and switches to H (HSDPA).
Again, had you actually owned a Nexus S or researched it, you would have found that in the System Settings, that network mode is easily found, and either displays HSPA (H/3.5G) or UMTS(3G).

I have this problem with my phone as well. I just want to throw something else out there also.
On my Nexus one when I had CM7 depending on what I was doing it could display 3g change to H. The thing is though that when 3g was displayed you actually had no data connection.
It seems something similar is going on here because the behavior isn't a slow down in the connection speed rather it's an actual break in the connection (downloads stop, speedtest does nothing, etc.)
We might not have a problem with the phone switching back and forth between 3g and 4g. Rather the phone could be switching from 4g to nothing to 4g. Only it's so fast the icons don't display the whole story (this is my personal belief)
You can see the same type of behavior when switching from WCDMA only to GSM Only
It starts at H
Then briefly 3G
Then no letter
Then E
I've tried to find a way to get the phone locked on 3g but I can only get 2g or 4g.

C'mon HTC.

I can't remember whether you've mentioned this somewhere else, but what radio are you using? I'm curious as to whether you received a phone that didn't get an updated to release radio? I haven't had any problems.
I'm on 0.16.31501S.02
Also, I NEVER see 3G on my phone. I wonder if that actually helps my situation. I'm mostly always at full 4G, but will sometimes drop to 2G, or even G, depending on whether I'm in a shielded area or passing through a dead zone. I wonder if this could actually be working for me/against you?

I only go between 4G and 2G when in fringe areas as well. Haven't seen 3G once.

Solved my problem
I had the same problem of my Galaxy SII switching back and forth between data types. I had tried putting my iPhone 4 SIM into my Android (with an adapter). Turns out that my problem was with the SIM. I needed a different SIM for this type of phone.
Just positing this in case it helps anyone. Try visiting your carrier and ask for a different SIM.
Flash my T-Mobile ROM and it'll fix the issue.

T-Mobile US One S data connectivity known issue

T-Mobile acknowledges a known issue with data connectivity on the One S:
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4288
I'm guessing this is the same issue others have reported on the EU One S(wherein the data indicator jumps back and forth between H and 3G and takes ages to load), but the T-Mobile US software, like on all their recent phones, is modded so the indicator will only ever say 4G.
Reviewer has also stated that using EU-based ROMs on the T-Mobile US One S will cause "data bugs," so I'm wondering if this is what he is referring to. If it is, the bug appears to exist in both the T-Mobile US ROM and the EU ROM.
Has anyone had this issue in their T-Mobile US One S? What are your experiences? I've mostly been at home and on wifi since I got the phone a few days ago.
I had an issue with using an EU rom and the data switching back and forth from H and 3G. I reverted to stock nandroid (provided by reviewer) and haven't had an issue with switching between 3G and 4G while at work. As with you I am on Wi-Fi at home so I'm not too sure if I am affected. But I do know that while I was on the EU rom I had drastic drops in signal and network speeds as compared to the stock rom.

Interesting. I am using stock US T-mobile, as of yet unrooted because I might take it back. Connectivity is soo spotty. I have not contacted t-mobile yet because I want to collect as much info as possible. It's either 4g or nothing, that's true. And often, it's nothing. My old 3g phone would drop to edge and stay connected. This one will just drop the connection and that happens to often.
I've been using the One S for about a week and zero issues. My residence is only covered by edge but Park City and Salt Lake City I get solid 4g with zero drops or hiccups.

No issues here. I drop from HSPA to Edge in a fringe area but data never stops.

I don't have any data problems only time I see it low is when I turn it on it goes from 2g 3g to 4g. I haven't encountered any problems yet other then WiFi dropping then reboots when I try to reconnect

I'm affected. Many times when I open the browser to search for something, I'll get the No Data Connection window pop up, even though status bar shows 3G or 4G. I close that, reload the screen, try again and it usually works. It's as though it fails to hook up to the network until it tries a few times.
I dont really have data drop issues. My 2 issues are that it switches from hspda to umts periodically, but that doesnt affect data.
I have a concern though that I feel like reception is poorer on this phone. my gs2 would hold a better signal. In fact on the gs2 i never dropped calls, whereas on the one s i had a few.
Can a radio update fix this?

Quite possibly.
u think a radio fix can correct an issue with one handset getting a stronger signal than another? isnt that a hw issue?

What? You're comparing two different devices. A radio issue can cause lower signal so a radio update can give you more signal.

Same here, also in the Salt Lake area... maybe this a regional issue?
Same issue here in Boston. I don't get dropped but the signal goes up and down most of the time.

I just performed one, and got the delay/interrupt, my results were:
Download: 110kbps
Upload: 710kbps
A previous attempt last week netted 9102 down, 2065 up....that was obviously WITHOUT the bug.
I am near Chicago First let me just say for some reason my reception really never goes past 3 bars and sometimes I have none at all in places the sgs2 would have plenty dont know if this is just me...but man when data is good its phenomenal I have got up to 25mb down and 3 up but the interruptions in reception and data kill that pretty bad..so I am very torn about this phone I hope it isn't hardware related because the EU version has the same bug..
Same here most of the time I only have a max of 3 bars and I noticed sometime when I have all bars when i pick it up I lose a bar or two
Yes, phone does have connectivity issues. I live in New York and my previous phone would never go down one single bar on 4G, except in my job where my 4G goes down to 2 bars.
Now my bars go up and down like waves and jumps from 4G to 3G constantly, and in my job I just get 2G. It really sucks. Let's hope it's fixed with a hardware update and that it's not the actual chip.
Experience is exactly as you specify. Stock Rom always displayed 4g....custom Roms flip between 3g, h and I even saw an e today?!
Although time with stock was limited...I do believe, whether just a label or not, seemed data was faster with stock. Regardless....no complaints.

I don't think I have ever had a phone with Tmous where this wasn't a problem. I just figured it was T-mobile's network kicking me off so I wouldn't hog all the bandwidth. In other words, every smartphone I have had with tmobile has had this issue.
