[Q] Automatic search for matching contatcs - HTC Inspire 4G

Hi,
I unlinked all my contacts to find some mismatches I accepted, now I would like to force a search for matching contacts, like the one the phone performs automatically from time to time (have not figured out under what circumstances it search for them).
Does anybody knows how to initiate that search for matching contacts? basically will be searching LinkedIn and Google contacts.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Duplicate Contacts

Hi, I'm having a problems with contacts. When I go into phone, contacts in Google and those on the SDCard (symbol) appears. I only want to see contacts from Google. Although I have turned off SIM (192) and phone (0) and only left Google enabled under View, contacts from the SDCard continue to show. How do I find where these contacts are showing from and blow them away? Thanks.
I can't offer a direct solution but here's something for you to consider. I had an issue with duplicate contacts when I first came over from a blackberry. Because its a different phone with a different way of handling contacts, I found it best to take the time to consolidate all of my contacts, saved them in Google, and then deleted all other copies. So now, all of my contacts are Google only, and no longer have a duplicate issue.

[Q] How to add "phone-only, unsynced" contacts?

I can't find the answer to this questions anywhere, so I thought the good old xda community could help.
I have two exchange accounts set up in my phone and no Gmail accounts. Before I was able to add contacts as "phone only, unsynced". Now that I have the exchange accounts whenever I want to add a contact I have to choose one of those two accounts but there is no option to save "phone-only".
Question: How can I add phone-only, unsynced contacts?
Thanks in advance for any insights!
Try turning off sync temporarily on both email account under Setting-->Accounts then add a contact and see if that gives you the unsync option back when adding contacts. Let me know how it goes
Sync is off in both accounts. I only receive email through push. Thanks for suggestion though! Any other ideas?
Any ideas on this? Appreciate any help!
Possible answer
Sorry for reviving such an old thread but I had this problem and while I was searching for a solution this came up so for the sake of completeness here is a possible answer.
There is an app that allows you to import appointments from iCal files now while that is not you issue to do this the app creates a dummy account on the phone that is unsynced and from my experience you are able to add contacts under that account.
So hopefully this works for you.
Also just to mention this app is not mine nor have I had any input into it.

Solution
Hi, I'm looking into upgrading my Motorola Atrixand in the meantime decided to update android. Immediately following the update (to 2.3), I realized that my old SIM contacts were missing. However, I noticed the missing contacts, although deleted from my SIM were somewhere on my phone. Ex. in my text history, the names were still there. I could click on a contact and when in edit mode, it read: unsynced contacts from att address book. I found no solution on android forums, etc. So I logged in to att.com and performed a search. It lead me to instructions on how to migrate contacts from 1 phone to another. I know I'm only referring to the same phone, but I tried it anyway. It worked!!
All you need to do is go to contacts, menu, export to sd card (hopefully your phone supports external storage). Then import from sd card. All my contacts are back. I first tried to export to SIM card, but It didn't work (however, this is where I could visually see my missing contacts as it allows you to select - I have over 800 contacts so I dont have time to go through the list) - I'm guessing this issue occurred to people whose complete contact list would not fit on the SIM. Probably if your contact list did fit on the SIM you did not experience this issue. If it happened to you and you do not have external storage I guess you could still use the SIM option by selecting a few contacts at a time - if you maxxed out the SIM storage you would need to delete them from SIM before copying more.
Anyway, once you do this it adds all contacts to the Google address book so you're now good to switch phones and get them just by adding your Google acount.
Hope this helps some folks - I was feeling desperate without about 150 of my oldest contacts.

[Q] Incorrectly formatted names

Hi all
I have noticed that on some of my contacts, the name appears incorrectly.
For example, instead of John Smith, they appear as John Smith Smith.
The surname appears twice.
This seems to only relate to LinkedIn contacts (which are Synced with my phone contacts). And specifically - stand-alone LinkedIn contacts that do not also have contact records in Google, Facebook, etc.
I cannot edit the name on my phone, as the name fields are not editable (I assume as it reads them as read-only from LinkedIn)
But, when I log in to LinkedIn, the names appear correctly there (and name cannot be edited in LinkedIn, in any case).
So it seems to me this is some issue with Android interfacing with LinkedIn and mis-reading or duplicating a field.
The only workaround I can seem to find, is to add the person as a seperate Google contact, and then link/merge the two contact records. But I dont really want to do this, i dont really want to have Google contacts for all my LinkedIn contacts - that defeats the point of being able to import/sync my LinkedIn contacts.
I have tried unsyncing LinkedIn contacts, then re-syncing - no fix.
I thought before I try LinkedIn forums I would check the Android side of things first.
Has anyone else here had the same problem, or know a fix??
By they way, I had this issue pre-ICS, but I thought I would wait for ICS to see if it fixed.
However, now I have ICS, but still the same problem.

Duplicate Tasks in Calendar

So the tasks app on the One S syncs with Google Tasks. You can also choose to have Google Tasks show up on your calendar. My problem is every task I enter shows up twice in the calendar. I have tried all different settings in the tasks and calendar apps. This includes hiding all calendars except tasks, and they still show twice.
I'm at a loss as to what is happening. I checked Google Tasks online and there are no duplicates. Is anybody else experiencing this?
I am also having this problem.
I haven't found a fix for it yet, but if I do I will make sure to post back here.
Same problem to me.
The only workaround I found was installing another PIM software (Jorte) and setting Tasks in Jorte only to local. But in this way they are not synchronized with anything.
I don't understand why HTC Sync or HTC Sync Manager synchronizes only calendar and contacts with Outlook and not tasks, this sounds crazy.
Same here
I have the same problem with my HTC one S. I'm contacting HTC, as this appears to be a bug in Sense. Both the duplicate entries appear to be originating as Tasks. When I try to delete one of the duplicates from calendar, both get deleted. Also, this appears to be a problem only with Gtasks; Exchange and Hotmail tasks work fine. Workaround for now is defaulting all new (non work related) tasks as Local. Just installed an update from HTC yesterday and the problem is still there.
Same issue
I have the same issue with on my HTC One S (stock ROM). I'm also hoping this gets resolved quickly.
There isn't a fix for it by tweaking the settings, but I find it strange that for the google account, I can check 2 different calendars.
One is named [my gmail address] and the other is named "Task". Under my gmail address are no appointments, "Task" does contain them.
I have found a temporary fix though for deleting duplicates, you just clear the phone's temporary data (not a factory reset). You can do this under [settings] > [storage] and tap "make more space" under both internal and phone storage. I don't know exactly which one contains the data. *Update* This only seems to work first time round...
This fix implies that the cause of the problem lies in the phone internally. From my intermediate knowledge of programming I suspect that every edit of a task (including creation of it) for google accounts is stored on the phone seperately as a file that doesn't equal (in programmatic terms) the others. Therefore, the calendar will hold every local "version" of the task + the one on google's servers.
As for resorting to alternative market apps, I haven't found any task app that easily lets me set a reminder on any date and time I wish. It's always the same day or the day before at most. The best I've seen is a very limited list of options that goes as far back as a week. Other problems include missing priority settings for tasks or it doesn't sync with HTC's native tasks or calendar app.
Actually I found, that one can only clear data of single process. I don't know its exact english name, because on my system is displayed in polish ("Pamięć kalendarza"), but it should be sth, like "calendar memory".
After clearing its data and opening calendar app, the list of available calendars was empty, but after a while (and clicking refresh, and clicking refresh in Tasks app) the list populated with calendars from google account and with those internal from the phone. And items from the google tasks calendar weren't duplicated any more. At least until they are edited again in Tasks app.
BTW, has anything changed in this topic? Is there any solution for this problem?

Contacts apps and import contacts advice

Verizon Galaxy s10e
One of the recent software updates changed how the Samsung contacts app displayed the alphabetical list index. It no longer has that narrow right side A-Z pop out.
I found one on google play, fittingly call "Contacts", but he link to it's website takes me to some sort of error page, which makes me a bit leery of it.
Can anyone recommend a reliable app that has this feature?
For issue #2, I use to be able to separate my phone contacts from my gmail contacts. Currently, I don't see a method to separate snd sync only my phone contacts, and ignore the extra several 100 gmail contacts.
thanks
