[Q] HELP: Save me from going to the Apple side

Hey guys,
So here's the situation:
I've been excited about the Transformer for weeks. I'm getting one as my birthday/graduation present as soon as I can. But, thanks to the delayed US release, my mind has been wandering to other tablets, and, inevitably, the iPad popped into my mind. Right now, I still want to purchase the Transformer, but the thought that the iPad might be more worth it still lingers in my mind...
Here's what convinced me to even THINK about the iPad:

More responsiveness on the iPad's end vs the Transformer (seen only through videos)
Better camera on the iPad: the Transformer looks like it isn't showing the true color
Video playback on the Transformer seems choppy.
At the moment, the only PLUS for the Transformer in my mind is that you can purchase a dedicated dock for it which will make taking notes in college a lot easier + extend the battery.
PLEASE, can you guys convince me that the Transformer is the better choice so I don't feel like I should have purchased the iPad when I eventually do purchase a Transformer? Tell me why *you* would purchase a Transformer over an iPad.
(Perhaps I'm overlooking/misjudging some critical features of the Transformer that outperform the iPad; if so, please address them!)
EDIT: I suppose before recommending a device you guys should know how I plan to use the device:
Mostly as a productivity/entertainment device:
Taking notes in college classes
Standard internet use
Gaming
Movie and music use
Maayyyyybe as a GPS if it is capable of acting as one

Good luck taking notes on an iPad lol. But really, that's a huge reason why I'm going with the transformer, I'm also a college student who needs that keyboard dock.

The two devices are so different. If price isn't an issue and you're not opposed to a more closed environment with fewer options and tweaking potential, then the iPad may just be the right tablet for you.

Transformer. Because it's not apple. Haha no but seriously I would go with the transformer. IMHO I think apple is to restrictive to do may of the things you can do with android.

OP "thanks to the delayed US release"... As far as I've heard and read from these posts and other sites the US release is not delayed and on track for Tuesday Apr 26. There is a UK delay, but not US.

Demonstrably untrue. Apple's iPad is limited to running non-iPad native apps as a tiny window in the center of the screen; Android has no such limitation. Hence iPad apps had to be recoded; most Android apps work just fine on tablets as-is.
This is just spin -- a fictional advantage created by Apple to hide their own disadvantage.

Easily fixed if it's just color accuracy / white balance. The Transformer's camera currently has bigger issues in terms of stuttering and huge shutter lag. Hopefully those will be resolved. Ask yourself this though -- are you really going to use a large tablet for photos and videos, rather than a compact camera or cellphone?

Video capture from the rear cam is. Video playback isn't. I've seen numerous examples online playing even Full HD (1080i) videos downsampled by the Transformer to fit its own screen, and the reviewers have said they played smoothly. I'm confident that at 720p, the Transformer is more than capable of smooth video.
At the moment, the only PLUS for the Transformer in my mind is that you can purchase a dedicated dock for it which will make taking notes in college a lot easier + extend the battery.

Which even without all of the above is a huge plus. Nobody can type on an on-screen keyboard as fast as a good touch-typer on a reasonable keyboard, and the reviews of this keyboard are pretty much all positive. Plus you get a touchpad, so you don't have to keep reaching over the keyboard to make selections like you do with bluetooth keyboards.
PLEASE, can you guys convince me that the Transformer is the better choice so I don't feel like I should have purchased the iPad when I eventually do purchase a Transformer? Tell me why *you* would purchase a Transformer over an iPad.

Beyond the above, companies that emphasise openness and listen to the end users, not a company that locks everything down, does its best to prevent any competition with its own software, and in the latest scandal, continues to record your entire GPS location history even when specifically told not to do so.

It is. You'll just either need a device to tether to, or an offline mapping solution. Personally I'm waiting eagerly for Route 66 (http://www.66.com) to release; they're based on TomTom data, and I've been using a TomTom for years, so I know their data is great.

Honestly I think both of the tablets do what you want fairly well. Here's what you have to consider and decide if these things matter to you.
Do you care about flash content on the web and viewing it on your tablet?
Are you concerned with price?
Do you like to tinker and mess around with Android/OSs?
The iPad is a great all-around tablet. If you don't mind spending some extra money, or the lack of flash, it might be a better option for you. There are some good keyboard options for it. I dislike trying to get documents off of iOS products. I like being able to connect an Android device like a flash drive and drag and drop stuff off (which is super helpful for using computer labs that may not have itunes at school).
Why am I buying this tablet?
I'm invested in Android (own apps/heavy google app user)
$400 feels like a good entry point to try out tablets
I like the community and dealing with fixing my issues on my own and changing ROMs and kernels, tweaking the looks and performance.

Okay, first, the choppy video recording and poor camera quality has apparently been addressed in a recent firmware update that came out shortly after most reviewers received their units. Some reviews noted this.
Second, on a related note, comparing the iPad 2's camera to the Transformer's is kind of funny (once the firmware issues are resolved), since the TF has a 5MP camera vs. the <1MP camera on the iPad 2.
Third, sure, the iPad 2 is more "responsive," because iOS itself is a glorified app launcher. Honeycomb does more, and Android runs background apps, and so sure it might be a little less smooth. Particular in its current 3.01 (really 1.01 for Honeycomb) iteration. It will improve, but iOS will remain for the foreseeable future nothing but a glorified app launcher. For myself, I find Honeycomb itself vastly more useful--turn on the screen and BAM!, useful information.
Fourth, apps will come, and while there aren't so many Honeycomb-optimized apps (although more every day), many non-optimized apps run just fine. So far I've only run into a handful of apps that just don't work on a tablet, and by that I mean don't benefit from its advantages.
Fifth, the iPad 2 wifi-only version doesn't have GPS. So, if you want to use a tablet for GPS, then you'll need to get the 3G iPad 2.
Sixth, and finally, you'll need a keyboard for taking notes. Period. So either get an iPad 2, case, and a Bluetooth keyboard (and make sure you have the right workplace to support all three) or get the TF + keyboard dock and use it pretty much anywhere.

Aside from everything else I have to +1 this post...first off the iPad camera is horrible, but that aside, there's a reason you're on xda developers, you want to do more with your device than what you're told you can do with it by the manufacturer...
I've been around the PC industry since the 80's (using linux since early 90's) and phone industry since the late 90's.. and I love the fact that I can tinker and hack something and play with it, something extremely difficult on apple products.
Google devices are fun to play with, and you aren't controlled like cattle to the slaughter ... unless you want to be a mindless apple drone, I would stick with an android tablet...

If the only plus to you is that it has a dock, then you're probably better off getting an iPad 2. The iPad 2 is a great tablet, and most people who own it love it. I know that's not the right thing to say here, but it's the truth. Personally, I would feel completely stifled with an iPad, but you might be perfectly content.

This. It wouldn't make much sense for me to have to re-purchase all of my apps, while giving up the Google integration I've come to rely on, just to have access to the App Store (which is, to me, the only real plus the iPad has over the Transformer, assuming the camera glitches are fixed and Honeycomb is refined).

The versatility of the Transformer is the only reason I'm considering it. As Anand said about the iPad, it couldn't replace the laptop, so he eventually stopped using it.
The Transformer can be a tablet or light-duty laptop. What other device (not just tablet) can do that???
As for apps, it's mostly Apple BS. Ever hear Mac users complain about the lack of apps or games vs. PCs? A lot of iPad "apps" are really just websites due to lack of proper web support.
And as others have said, at least Android apps tend to scale, and not just pixel-double like iPhone apps.
The freedom of choice... being locked-in to iTunes forever? No thanks. Heck, the only choice Apple gives is the "all-new" white iPhone. That's right, WHITE... be a rebel! LOL!

Example if you were going away for a few days and you owned an ipad you would have to take your laptop which defeats the purpose of owning a tablet, with an android device you can just take that and download all the files/movies/music etc right to the device.

Congrats for a least attempting to get the facts before you buy. Personally, there is no debate, the iPad is far inferior, and most "techie" types here on XDA are not just wanting to spend $$$ for a freaking apple on a limited use device...

I can't believe no one commented on the camera bit, the iPad 2's camera is only 0.92MP, how is it in any way better? Sure it can record video smoothly but that will also be possible on the transformer after a software up date.

This is not correct. You can access iTunes on the iPad without a computer.After the initial sync when you buy the iPad, you do not need to be connected to a laptop unless you are updating software or transferring files, or backing up files

Not sure what you mean by inferior but that is your opinion.
Like people have said,it depends on what features are important to the OP. Simple easy interface with lots of tablet specific apps vs more "open" system much less apps(currently),ability to customize and tinker.
Ultimately, you should go into a store and try both to see what you can live with as there are compromises with going with either.

infinity vs ipad 3? help me decide.

So I'm a college student looking for a tablet to do some basic browsing, watch movies, and play some light games. I have already purchased an iPad 3 but then heard about the asus infinity, not sure if I should return it and get the infinity.
Things I like about the ipad:
Terrific screen, watching movies on it is incredible.
iOS is very smooth and bug free
eTextbooks are very convenient as I can mark them with Goodreader
Things I dont like:
iOS not as open as android(So far only missing game emulators and open file system that i have on my android phone, other than that iOS suits my needs... so far)
Things I like about the asus:
Android(for its open environment)
Better cameras
Faster Processor on paper
keyboard dock
Things I don't like:
Asus quality control is terrible compared to apple.
problems are already surfacing
battery life is much worse
Screen res not as high as the iPads.
So far android is far from perfect and lacks many tablet apps.
Aspect ratio is great for movies but is inferior for browsing and reading, portrait mode is kind of awkward.
Asus is blatantly mimicking apple with their packaging, their own form of smart covers, and their advertising videos(all the big names of the company in the video talking about the product, whole video giving off a feeling of a sophisticated yet elegant product) not that all this should matter.

That's quite the understatement. There's tons of things that an Infinity has over an iPad 3, but not all of them matter to everyone. HDMI/USB/SD ports, better multi-tasking, better screen brightness, file system, ROMs, emulators, floating apps (browser, video, notes, IM), controller support, and several other little things.
So to pick which tablet you want, it's all a matter of functionality. The Transformer series was made for bridging the gap of tablet/laptop, which is what made me buy it. The iPad is more bridging the gap between phone/laptop. iPads run very nicely, are definitely great quality, but you can never really dig into it and make the system your own. I've used iPads and while I enjoy them and it made a great accessory for sitting on the couch or the like, it could never come close to replacing my laptop, where the Transformer series can do that for the most part.
So for the OP, I probably would recommend an iPad because it seems they want more easy fun out of it than hacking and getting a million different uses out of it like people do with Transformers. Also, they seem to be a bit on Apple's nuts with that last bit in the post.

There's apps and tweaks on a jail broken iPad that surpass anything else in mobile in my experience. Amazing developers working in that. Better app store too. But you'll also be fighting with Apple all the damn time to have it. Personally I'm bored with iOS but it's still probably the best tablet going.
As of now you can jailbreak the iPad right out of the store in about 5 mins, it's so easy. That the won't last and then you wait again. If that matters to you. Also, there are a lot of bitter anti-apple people here it's asking for some trollish responses to ask that in the T700 forums. But maybe I'm happily wrong about that.

If you think Apple products are bugfree then buy an apple product.
i don't like iTunes and as far as I know from my iPhone times, copying music and movies is only possible with iTunes.
It's much easier with the infinity. there you simply can connect your infinity directly to your windows network and copy whatever you want wherever you want. with VLC or another player you are able to play almost every file-format without converting

In my opinion, neither is "better" than the other - hell, like I said in another thread, you really can't even compare iOS and Android in an Apples-to-Apples (no pun intended!) comparison. They really are different beasts for different functions.
As already stated, Apple's hardware is very high quality, but then again, Apple devices are missing half of the hardware that the Infinity supports (HDMI, SD, MicroSD, keyboard dock, etc). Maybe Apple would have more hardware issues if they packed all of those devices in their iPad - who knows.
On the software front, iOS is very polished and stable but also very "locked down" compared to Android. Android apps scale much better than iOS apps, which makes the fact that there are less tablet-specific apps a little less painful since even apps written for phones look nice on Android tablets.
Also, keep in mind that iOS was written to support only a handful of devices while Android supports hundreds (or maybe even thousands) of different devices using different processors, different screens, etc, which is what makes it less stable on the software side (in my opinion, it's to be expected).
As already stated, if you just want to play games, watch movies and surf the net, the iPad is probably the better choice.
If you want a Netbook replacement as well as a nice tablet, then the Infinity is a better choice.
For me, it's a no brainer due to the dock. I actually own an iPad 1 and I loved it - until I got sick of Apples crap and noticed the Asus Transformer series! Never looked back and I do *not* miss dealing with Apple and iTunes!

It is truly your preference between iOS vs. Android ecosystem.
Hardware specs are irrelevant in my opinion as in the end they seem to even out.
1. Screen resolution - Ipad 3 has better resolution on paper and it indeed has but as some reviews suggested the difference is much less noticible than from traditional tablet resolution to Infinity. Whether your eye can truly tell the difference or not, you really have to pull up probably two system side to side, but that's the only time you may notice.
2. CPU - Infinity has better CPU benchmark but GPU is better on iPad 3. Though no game at this point pushes to their limit so it won't probably matter.
3. Camera - Infinity has better camera, but do you really use tablet camera that much? It is never good as that of real digital camera.
4. Battery life - I only have iPad 2 but iPad 3 supposed give the same battery time as iPad 2. So based on this fact, I say iPad 3 should be much better battery life than the Infinity; however, infinity dock gives extra battery life. Adding the power of dock, infinity should have longer battery overall. Plus charging is much quicker on infinity than the iPad 3 (according to what I read, but it is true when compared to iPad 2).
So these hardware based features and I am sure other parts can be argued one way or the other. It all comes down to which ecosystem you like.
Personally, I chose (back) Android ecosystem. *Note: Some are hardware specific.
1. File System - I like to be able to organize files my own. I don't like iPad keeping same file copied at multiple locations for each applications.
2. Expandable Storage - I have many lecture video series with relatively large file sizes. I don't want to transfer/delete every time. Rather I like to carry around as a disk (in this case microSDs and quickly swap)
3. Applications - This may be perhaps what boils down to for everyone. For what I do, I like Android application selections.
For example,
A. Flash Card: I use Anki Flashcard application which is far the best flash card out there as it is cross platform; however, for iOS version they charge $20+; whereas, for Android it is FREE.
B. Ebook Reader: You mentioned GoodReader which is great PDF application on iOS but does not support Epub. Whereas, iBook has nice page flip realistic feeling Epub but their PDF support is terrible with no marking. So I had to use two applications to organize my ebook collections. Whereas, Android has Mantano reader.
C. Flash Support: It is true that Adobe is terminating the official support but Android currently plays it and unlikely to go away for a while. So until all the sites that I watch stream video becomes HTML5 compatible, I would rather have this feature.
4. True Multitasking - iOS's multitasking is very limited. It is highly controlled by Apple and for instance if you try to download a large file using browser, or other application, iOS terminates it quickly after you push the application into background.
5. Games - If this is what you are intending to use your table primarily, I say you should go with iPad. Selection on Android games are not as great as iPad and they lag in release.
6. Apple's Business Policy - They make great product that are not top notch spec-wise, but integrated so well and perhaps everything works in concordance and therefore bottleneck is not there; whereas, other devices have awesome and better spec but always have some bottle neck which hinders from other high spec components to hit its full capacity. But having said this, I don't like Apple's business policy with the way they keep suing, which to me seems to potentially hinder the advancement of technology. So yeah this is my personal opinion, but I am going for Android...
By the way, I do own MacBook Air, Iphone, and Ipad 2....
Now remember these points do not include jailbreak or rooting/custom firmware. Though I am sure they change the game quite bit but I am not familiar enough to make comment about these.

you say you want it to watch movies. well let me ask you, how do you plan to get the movies on the ipad? will they need to be converted? does your pc have to be on? can you connect a thumb drive/hard drive with movies on it, to your ipad, so that you dont have to turn on your pc? Can you go over to a friends house, plug your ipad into his/her pc and transfer their movies to your ipad?
for browsing, do you require sites with flash? would you mind being limited to just Safari?

If your buying a tab for movies and the TF700 is your best choice. I have iPad 1 2 and 3 in my house because my wife is a information and tech director for a school and she prefers the TF700 to all of them for vIdeo . She is waiting on a Note 10.1 to arrive to test as her district is dumping Apple since they have started using Google services last year.

Goodplayer so far lets me play any video format. I simply just transfer it via iTunes and i'm good to go. No pre-processing needed. The investment for an HDMI dongle shouldn't be too much, and the browser Puffin works beautifully with flash. I also plan on jailbreaking if that makes a difference.
Don't get me wrong I love the infinity, If android could somehow integrate the app ecosystem of iOS that would be godly. I feel like the 16:10 ratio however is inferior to the ipads 4:3 not in watching movie but in overall tablet use.

I feel like you've already made your choice, but I'll list the pros for the infinity over the ipad for me. With the keyboard dock you get a great increase in productivity (writing papers, general messaging) along with an increase in battery live. Let's not forget the benefits of the full sized USB port which lets you connect a 2 TB hard drive, a USB mouse or keyboard, or a PS3 or XBOX 360 controller for gaming. The iPad 3 can't do any of those. Let's also not forget the storage flexibility you get from a microSD and full sized SD slot. In the future we'll be able to dual boot Android, ubuntu and probably windows 8 when that comes out due to the unlocked bootloader. The iPad 3 is stuck on whatever apple allows, and they have a penchant for removing flagship features from their OS to drive new hardware sales. Finally although the jailbreaking community is nice, I feel the Android Dev community on Rootzwiki and XDA far outweigh that. You're going to be missing out on some glorious hackery and development. Anyway a lot of the tablet apps that I paid for on my ipad 2 generally have free counterparts on Android that do more due to the greater system level access. I suggest playing with one in Best Buy and deciding for yourself

Quite honestly, me being a techy that likes to tweak and control things would never buy an Ipad (I do have an ipod touch though, which I got prior to getting going on Android), but I have also come to the relaization that some people don't know much about tech, don't need all the flexibility and power, and just want it to work should go the Apple route. I have stopped a long time ago trying to argue which one's better, especially since I end up doing tech support for them if I tell them to go Android. I plead the 5th if its Apple.

16:10 is far superior in terms of movies and gaming. But for overall tablet use, it's much better. Can you find printer paper in 16:10 dimensions? It just makes its weird. Too wide and too short. 16:10 is very good for movies since it's closer to cinema aspect ratios of 2.35:1

I actually see some merit to the 4:3 argument for ebook reading, but not movie viewing or web pages so again it depends on your main use The comparison video above does discuss this at length too.
Never thought of it much but because of the aspect ratio differences I am not sure the Ipad 3 retna display is actully any higher vertical resolution(when in landscape) than the TF700 since it is a different screen aspect. Looking at the 2 side by side in the comparison, the Ipad 3 aspect looks odd to me, maybe because everything else is going widescreen.

16:10 is god tier for everything, trust me, I've tried 4:3 and it's not good for anything. Its like I'm back in 1997.

I had the ipad 3 for 2 months. After the first week i was sick of it. I hate ios and its limited features. I jailbreaked it so i could change the damn theme, and i installed maybe 5 tweaks and the ipad became slow as ****. My first and last ipad or any apple products. Seriously for those who say ipad has a better build quality, i just have to laugh at you. After one week the bottom part burned because i was playing games for 30 minutes. I think it was because of smart cover since the ipad 3 becomes so hot when you play (little better after update came out, but too late). But both ipad 3 and smart cover are made by apple and lol they couldnt even make that right. Anyways, if you like ios and its limited features, then buy ipad. If you want awesomeness, buy Infinity.

Android tablets vs ipad questions

Hi, i am currently looking for a tablet, i am hoping in the long run it may replace my laptop but i am not going to sell that yet incase, but for day to day use i would like to use a tablet more.
i understand that on here we maybe a little more biased to apple, i usually am myself lol
i have always used android on my phones, i currently have a Samsung galaxy s2 using a custom rom, resurrection remix. So i do like android a lot and very comfortable using it.
on the other hand my girlfriend had an ipad 3 already and i do kind of like it a lot and use it a lot when im at hers, i never find any fault with it, it runs extremely smooth giving its lower specs to current new android tablets out. on my phone i must admit i will get the odd app saying it has to close or it couldn’t start and vie had to restart my phone etc.. i have not once seen my girlfriends ipad crash.
This now leaves me unsure about what to get and would like some opinions, my hearts telling me you have to stick with android because its what you know and love.. and your supposed to hate apple!
But my brain is telling me deep down, you know the ipad is going to be better long term with less problems and a much bigger market.
giving that android are having so many issues now with patents, they have lost the right to carry on using flash etc which used to be a big bonus for android users. how many other issues are going to crop up where every time you update your android tablet you will lose some of its function because android have been ordered to take it out because of a patent ruling.
this all kind of worries me a little in terms of the future, will devs start favouring apple before anyone else when it comes to making apps, will at some point they say we aren’t making them at all for android because of all these issues (of course they already make more for apple than they do android now) im just wondering if it will get worse? i know android was certainly catching up but i think that may start to reverse a little soon.
Most of the above comes from what i have either heard people say or what i have read, i dont know 100% of everything above is correct or not. so some advise would be good.

If i got an ipad i assume i would have to keep my laptop for this purpose?
is there any reason why the specs of say the ipad are fairly standard compared to some of the newer android tabs and i still hear a lot about the android tabs being sluggish sometimes and the menus not being smooth, if apple can do a dual core 1ghz pad with 1gb of ram and it be soo smooth, how come android tabs which are also 1 and sometimes 2gb have multi core cpu's at 1.2 - 1.6 ghz yet they perform much more sluggish to the ipad?
is it because android is being added into a whole host of different makers to fit their specs, where as the ipad is being made only for apples own operating systems therefore its always going to be smoother as its all been made for the one system rather than for multiple systems?
i am assuming if android also made their own hardware the two would go together much more smoothly, or am i wrong?
From reading the above back it feels like in am heading more towards the ipad, but i would like reasons why i should maybe not choose the ipad.

Up to now that’s my shortlist, i would be looking at the 32gb versions unless the 64 wasn't a bad price, i am looking to spend about £400 - £500 max, i have seen new ipad 3's 64gb on ebay for £480, not sure how much the others will be, i would need to hold out for the 32gb or 64gb versions of the galaxy note 10.1 if i was to get that, not sure why they have only released a 16gb version and no others.

If you prefer the ipad then go for that, it's fine asking what people think but they don't have to live with the tablet you get, you do and it sounds like you've made a choice and are hoping people can change your mind.
Regarding not seeing ipad crash, well no one does because when it does crash it won't actually tell you and on startup of an app it shows a picture not the app itself.
This makes it seem to start quicker as user thinks they are seeing the app starts and if app crashes and restarts the user won't usually realise.
Android didn't lose the right to have flash, adobe chose to pull it....but it is still available for uk android users from play store.
You can stream media from an android tablet to other devices using free apps like mediahouse upnp dlna. You can try some apps on your phone to see if they do what you need.
Android appears more sluggish than ios because ios prioritises user input whereas android multitasks fully and so doesn't single out one aspect for more attention although jellybean does try to improve ui interaction to be much smoother.
The ipad will be easy to use and do what you want, you will lose the customisation and lack of restrictions offered by android so you might get bored a bit but it will do the job just fine.
Apps wise both markets are fine but apples is safer if you're worried about malware, both have a large amount of apps to choose from but a lot of devs do release to ios first because it is easier to code for (ie not hundreds of different spec devices to get an app working on, just a few) and has a high number of users who pay well for apps.
As for apps on android tablets, some do have special tablet only versions but most adapt to your tablets resolution so most should look fine especially as more and more phones are released with higher tablet like resolutions and as these resolutions are becoming much more common developers make their apps display better on them.

Whichever you decide... You have to keep in mind what you are going to use the tablet for to begin with... There are alot of things that tablets cannot do well which in turn we use our personal computers for... These tablets are new technology, and will be growing at an exponential rate... As of now the tablets are performing more and more than once originally released... I myself will not be giving up or replacing my computer for a tablet because I do lots of photo editing, video editing and most importantly my music software... So as for a tablet, I would only be using it to browse the web and social networking alongside the other various basic needs for internet use... As of now I currently own a Galaxy Nexus from Sprint, and it suffices for the daily rounds of networking and web search... But in the future with the new implementation of Microsoft Windows 8 and tablets, it seems that I might be replacing my PC... But in my opinion... Wait for the better tablets... Apple builds it's hardware to do what it does... There is little room to upgrade anything efficiently... Android is working on making their devices more breathable like a personal computer...
And in my opinion, Microsoft is the leading factor here as far as developing the better tablet... I am not a big Microsoft guy as opposed to Linux... But the money, resources, and experience tend to lean at Microsoft... In my opinion... Get the low cost Nexus 7 tablet for now... Keep the laptop... And save up for the swagger that Microsoft might develop here in the near future... or wait for Android to steal the spotlight and WOW us with the new tablet that might one day surpass the PC...
As far as Apple and their products... I am against them simply because of the crybaby courtroom antics... I will probably never buy another Apple product again because of their David Caruso like opportunistic grievances over their patents... They simply lost money because they're not on the ball as quick as Samsung... They lost out on sales due to the minimal changes in the iPhone hardware and design... It was a great run for the awesome product when it FIRST came out on the market... I think that their devices are well put together... but on the same note... the patents are ridiculous... and pretty soon someone will see the lawsuit rulings and get the bright idea of making car companies start having to pay royalties to whomever developed the first vehicle, and we'll all be driving on 3 tires instead of four...

Okay, first off, the myth about ipads never crashing is not true. iOS has a weird way of force closing crashed apps in the background, so you would never know that it happened. The reason why iOS seems very fast is that the OS itself is optimized to run on less resources and iOS has zero fragmentation. The main problem with android is the lack of unity in hardware and software. Apple has full control of iOS and hardware, so it is very efficient in that sense.
Moving on to the issue of replacing a computer with a tablet. My own view is that the easy things that you do on a laptop is a bit harder on a tablet as its OS tends to be much simpler and that means it can include a limited number of features. The Pro version has a fully-powered intel ivy bridge cpu with a fully featured windows 8 in a tablet form. If the form factor has you staying away from laptops, then this is the thing for you. Keep in mind that the surface pro is essentially a laptop in tablet form and I think that's pretty cool.
If you really insist on just a android tablet, then it's either the asus transformer infinity or the galaxy note 10.1. I personally have used asus transformer pads and they are AMAZING. They are designed beautifully and definitely high-end. I haven't used the galaxy note 10.1, but the exynos quad does give it a significant boost over the asus tablet.
Reasons for not choosing ipad:
1. The ipad 3 is nothing that new. It still packs the outdated A5 cpu, but the gpu is something noteworthy. Retinal display is alright, b/c to tell you the truth, I can't tell the difference.
2. You cannot customize the ipad to your liking, that means no custom ROMs, kernels or skins, just plain-old iOS
3. The truth is between ipad and android tablets, it comes down to control and whether you like rooting and flashing ROMs. If you're tech-savvy and like to tinker with stuff, then go with android. If not, then it's down to personal preference, ipad or android, choose what you like.
4. Don't support Apple and it's anti-competition ways (more of a joke reason)

If you want apps go for the iPad simple as. It has a greater catalogue of apps designed for the tablet which is lacking on Android. I've had an android tablet before but now own the new iPad. The apps are far better, and better optimised to make use of the hardware. The OS is smooth and optimised.
I use an android phone and an ipad to give me best of both worlds. I got bored with my Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet as it just felt like a bigger version of of phone.
Also Apple hardware tends to hold value better than most other products. So that's another thing to consider if reselling in the future.
Both are good don't get me wrong but choose one based on what you need and want it to do.
I use my iPad for streaming my music via home sharing, browsing the net, social networking, I watch my tv on it whilst in my bed by streaming off my satellite box, reading books, editing images now and then for quick fixes, and more.

The tablets currently out will not replace your laptop. Both android and especially iOS are pretty much toy OS's that, for example, only let you work with one app at a time (though there are some limited efforts on the android side to overcome it). The closest you might come to replacing your laptop is the Surface Pro, coming Jan 2013ish, or the mysterious Ubuntu tablets that haven't materialized so far. Even those probably won't be powerful enough; it'll take a few years for the technology to catch up.
That is why I bought my tablet (the nexus 7) in a completely different niche than my laptop. It's meant to be an easy-to-carry, convenient device for mostly consumption.
Of the ipad alternatives you listed, I reckon that the galaxy note 10.1 is the most interesting. Who knows, maybe the stylus actually would be as useful as they portray in those business commercials.

Personally, i would stick with android. you have so much flexibility with it. and if you do want to get the framework of the ipad on your tablet, you could always flash miui also, you can download apps without using installous. you can view your storage files and folders with the android, but you can't do so so easily with the ipad.

My sensation browses the web faster, android apps are cheaper or totally free, the iPad is buggy as hell.
Apps crash on it a lot, despite being on the same network as my phone, even with a stronger signal the 3G speed is much slower.
XDA takes longer to load fully, even in chrome on the iPad, and if you try to type a reply before it has fully loaded expect to find yourself unable to type at all do you have to reload the page.
Scrolling any pages with images is laggy as hell, really jerky if you flick the page up or down.
Predictive text is a joke, you type a word and one letter from completion it makes a suggestion, and god help you if you don't want the word it suggests!
I'm fricken fed up having to change keyboard mode for punctuation or numbers too!
Oh nearly forgot, a couple of weekends ago it started needing hard reboots if I wanted to spend more than 10 minutes online with 3G.

My razors all I need I just "dock" it and I've got a working linix computer. But I too am waiting but I want to see the windows 8 also first. I own apple stock but I'd never buy an Apple phone. Android tablets are closer to replacing laptops than Apple tablets. iOS is just too restrictive to be productive on. You can't even download files off the internet on the iPad.
That being said, the Surface Pro will actually be a laptop replacement, as you can run all your favorite laptop software on it, and it runs a full fledged OS.

Best tablet for a laptop replacement?

I am willing to sell my laptop because I am addicted to computer games (dota 2, total war series etc), especially that I'm at university and I need to keep focus on studies.
So I need a tablet for the occasional browsing, office editing/reading and especially for watching movies and TV shows (this is the most important aspect). I will get enough money from my laptop to buy the best thing out there, so budget isn't a problem.
I am an Android user since I used the HTC Desire back in the days, then moved on to nexus S and fell in love with Nexus devices. So the Nexus 10 was my top interest so far, but I heard some of the devices have light bleeding (and I'm very sensible to display quality) and the resolution is actually too big, so the GPU is not powerful enough for it. There are some rumors a new nexus 10 will be unveiled by google with a quad core CPU and a better GPU, but I need a tablet now, not in 4 months or even later, especially that my country doesn't sell nexus devices on google play. Online stores in Romania just got the nexus 10 at the start of this month, so there's no way I'm gonna wait for the new one.
Then I had a look at the iPad 4: I absolutely loved the build quality and how it generally felt, everything was extremely smooth and it looked great, but the 4:3 aspect ratio is a total bummer, considering that I will watch a lot of movies. I tried to find a video to see how movies run on the ipad but had no luck.
Other tablets didn't seem to get me excited too much, was looking at the asus transformer t700 but it has outdated hardware and I heard its slower then the nexus 10.
So the question is, iPad 4 or Nexus 10?
I don't want answers from fan boys, please be realistic.

Also, I don't want to hear anything about converting movies and things like these, I just want to throw the movie on the tablet and see it, be it mkv or avi, blu-ray size etc.

Nexus 10 is way much better and could do all the things you listed above, unless your prefer iOS

I would suggest the Asus Transformer prime with the keyboard dock especially since you're a student and you could use it like you would a laptop in class.

In terms of specs and power, the ipad is pretty great and has the biggest library of apps.
The nexus 10 isn't as absolutely all mighty but it's pretty close, and it's got android, so it'll be much more capable of replacing a laptop computer than the ipad ever will be.
I personally despise Apple, I have had extremely bad experiences with them. I'm currently on an iMac, so it's not a matter of bandwagoning and fanboyism and stuff. I truly believe Android is better and more capable than iOS. The nexus 10 is probably the best android tablet on the market, though the Samsung Galaxy Note could be good for you as you want to use it for productivity and the s-pen is supposed to be amazing. No experience with it though, but I have a nexus10 and I got rid of my laptop afterwards, don't need it anymore.
I use the n10 as a laptop too, I take notes in class and everything, if you add a bluetooth keyboard, you'll get a lot of functionality out of it.

Nexus 10 is beefy specs, very beautiful.
I'm using a nexus 7 right now, with logitech android keyboard and wacom tablet pen.
If you plan on writing notes on tablet instead of paper; I found it difficult in classes where proff writes so fast its hard to keep up.
I'm sure depends on tablet pen you get. But for writing apps for android, there's not too many good ones like there is on apple app store atm.
I tried alot of writing apps; best one that was suited for me was papryus for android. I still couldn't keep up writing notes on it.
Typing notes on it is amazing. Much better then lugging around a laptop.
If you plan on going with writing notes, I suggest something with a digitizer.
If writing notes on tablet isn't an issue your on your mind.
Then i would go with nexus 10 w/ bluetooth keyboard.

I am an Android user since I used the HTC Desire back in the days, then moved on to nexus S and fell in love with Nexus devices. So the Nexus 10 was my top interest so far, but I heard some of the devices have light bleeding (and I'm very sensible to display quality) and the resolution is actually too big, so the GPU is not powerful enough for it. There are some rumors a new nexus 10 will be unveiled by google with a quad core CPU and a better GPU, but I need a tablet now, not in 4 months or even later, especially that my country doesn't sell nexus devices on google play. Online stores in Romania just got the nexus 10 at the start of this month, so there's no way I'm gonna wait for the new one.
Then I had a look at the iPad 4: I absolutely loved the build quality and how it generally felt, everything was extremely smooth and it looked great, but the 4:3 aspect ratio is a total bummer, considering that I will watch a lot of movies. I tried to find a video to see how movies run on the ipad but had no luck.
Other tablets didn't seem to get me excited too much, was looking at the asus transformer t700 but it has outdated hardware and I heard its slower then the nexus 10.
So the question is, iPad 4 or Nexus 10?
I don't want answers from fan boys, please be realistic.

Asus Transformer Prime / Infinity: I've played with the Nexus 10 and as far as options go it trumps the Nexus 10. The 10 is a great device, but as far as using USB, adding options, batteries expansion (DOCK), SD, etc the Transformer wins. The outdated hardware/slower than nexus is partly true. The real truth is that the noticeable speed is only on tests. Running apps side by side the speed difference is down to a second or two. The TFT700 is a quad core and the Nexus 10 is a dual core. If you don't put the TFT700 into econo mode then the speed is pretty much even or going to the TFT700 at times.
Now the biggest thing I liked with Nexus over the TFT700 is the micro usb charger and plugin. That and the screen. But outside of that, the TFT700 offers something that no other tablet offers, expansion and expansion. Want another battery? Plug into the dock and you get a keyboard and a battery. Want to add an SD/MicroSD for more space? Just slide the car in. Need to use a USB thumb drive to share something with somebody that has a computer or laptop but don't have a wireless signal? Just put it into the dock. Comparing the batteries in just the devices alone, the 700 to outlast the Nexus 10 in a side by side comparison.
The Nexus does offer the best picture and the newest software updates, but the ASUS team and XDA does a pretty good job of keeping the two running in a neck and neck race.

Transformer series tablets are great. I bought a tf300t after much research and an extremely happy with it. As stated before, the dock ads full functionality for taking notes in class. Supernote came pre-installed on mine which allows you to add drawings to your notes which is essential if you will be taking any chemistry classes.

I am attending a medical university and I need a notebook for notes, professors also verify our notes at the end of semester so writing on an electrical device isn't possible for me. I will be using the tablet to watch movies and occasionally create some office files on it (though I can still go at the university's library where we have computers for that).
Does anyone have any experience with a jailbroken iPad? How dependent is it to a PC? I heard you need one when you jailbreak it (same goes for rooting on android), but what then? Can I just download cydia apps on it and install without problems?

Well it seems you really want an iPad. I will say this, your notes can be verified on either Nexus ( 7 or 10) and the Transformer. In fact the supernote feature of the Asus is very similar to evernote (although I would still use Evernote or Onenote). You can even use Google to transcribe directly to the supernote feature. If you are looking to take notes in class for Medical, try looking at LiveScribe Skypens.
Ok back to your question, not to bash the iPad, my mother and sister love theirs, but it is too restrictive for my tastes. This includes jailbroken. If you are planning on doing any kind of syncing that does not involve your cloud features you will have to sync via a PC. Apps / updates /purchase can all be done with a wireless feature (although it is much slower). Taking notes you can use Evernote / Onenote, but the handwriting / bluetooth keyboards are not even on the same playing field as the Nexus / ASUS. I can verify that as a CS/Cyber major these notes can be verified and the audio playback / video playback you will have to get permission from your teach if you are allowed to record in class first. Also in terms of watching movies you will be limited to what ever you purchase or convert to the iPad's movie player unless you sync / convert / play with it on your PC first.
PC / Mac Rules for Tablets:
You do need one for an iPad and most Android devices. I say most because there are some devices you can root/break via webpages (Apple has since closed the security hole... so you would need an older OS).
Downloading from Cydia is just like downloading from any market place, with the exception of that you do not know if it has been scanned for malware/virus/permissions. Unlike Google/Amazon you will not be told of the permissions or what exactly it will be using on your system. Also keep in mind that some apps will just not work due to the age of your device / os if you are going from Cydia.

So I am not writing absolutely anything on a tablet/laptop. I will only use the tablet in university when I'm on some boring classes, to surf on some blogs or play some games.
Edit: I'm not really that convinced to buy the iPad, I would just be curious to own one for a while, to see how it performs in the long run. So I will probably buy it and if I don't get the hang of it in 30 days then im gonna return it and go for the nexus, where everything will be so simple for me.
I never actually held the nexus 10 in my hands so far, didn't get the chance to see it in any store, just online. Does it have at least equal quality as the ipad? I know its some kind of rubber plastic like the nexus 7, which felt good (tried that one).

If you want a good laptop replacement tablet: Go buy a PC Tablet (with the rotating displays, keyboard based).
Expensive, but fits the bill. Im pretty sure Hewett Packard (HP) and Dell have some tablets like that. Look up touchsmart on Google.

If you are under the age of 14, or, over the age of 45 than an iPad is a better choice.
If you want flexibility than get an android tablet.
If you want buisness stuff then get a non RT tablet (Windows 7, 8) (RT is no good for business stuff).
I find the tablets with folding displays to have the most bang for their buck. That is just my opinion though.

My mom, my dad, and my step mom all have Android phones or tablets. They are all over 45. My mom is the kind of person who asks me to find where a program saved a file, my dad got his phone after having only had a flop phone. None of them are struggling.
As of ICS simplicity and noob friendliness isn't really an issue.

Hi,
I have an Asus Transformer TF300TG and it is absolutely great. We are using it at home for fast access to internet (emails, cooking receipts, small gaming). It has 3G capability, so you just plug a data sim of your favourite GSM carrier and you are OK to travel and use it on the way.
The battery lasts literally for hours, there is one battery in the tablet part and other in the keyboard part - when tablet is drained and you connect it to the keyboard unit, it recharges from it.
There are a office pack preinstalled (Supernote) and for making notes and easy spreadsheets, it works quite OK.

Do you REALLY need a tablet?.. why I sold my Nexus 7 (2013, 2nd gen, Wifi version)

There was some weird voice in my head when I saw the new Nexus 7 (2nd gen) coming out: "buy it, you need it, you want it, you deserve a new toy". I have a few friends that were really happy with the 1st gen Nexus 7, so I was tempted to buy the 1st Nexus7, but didn't.
I should have really thought it through before buying the 2nd gen Nexus7. After having it for 4 months I concluded that the only reason to have it is if you like games.
Downsides and reasons I decided to sell:
- portability. Even thou its portable enough, i found that my old HTC Desire Z has the same functionality and use as the Nexus7 for daily tasks, plus also offers the portability of fitting into a pocket without tearing it.
- no vibro. I am used to have tactile feedback when writing messages, getting alerts and such
- no 3G/4G LTE The whole thing about the tablet is using it to consume stuff online and the 3g version costs 50-100 pounds extra. That's unfair
- influences to play games. Having something as powerful as it and not playing games seems like a waste of money and the crisp clear screen
Why would I want something as powerful as the Nexus 7 just to check my email, read news, e-books and the like? I can read mail and news on my phone and read books on my Kindle.
Don't get me wrong, the Nexus worked really smoothly and with just an occasional hiccup. But before getting it I would look at girls in public transport awkwardly and sometimes even get enough balls to actually say "hi" to them instead of turning my eyes red in that 7 inch, 50Hz shining light-bulb that seems to exploit my brains psychological fallacy to stay "on top" of (not important) news, games and apps.
I decided to get a Asus EEE for work and learning, Linux my Kindle and read PDF's on it (the battery holds in the count of weeks not days) and use my phone for android and stuff on the go.

After I built a desktop just for gaming I replaced my laptop with an ASUS Transformer - it's lighter, the battery lasts longer and I like it a lot better than a netbook. I still use my e-ink Kindle because I much prefer reading books on e-ink. My phone is pocket sized but isn't the best when I'd rather have a keyboard to type with.
For me, this is what works. It's all about arranging the tools in your life to work best for YOU.

There is nothing better than hardware keyboard and mouse in notebook or PC. In most cases tablets are running Android, so they can't run programs like PowerPoint or Excel.

I use it mostly for watching videos... Works great for that purpose. Still prefer reading on my kindle though. Also browsing the web is a little easier on the larger screen.

What about tethering then?

I wanted to buy tablet for myself for few times, but i dont see point now with my phone. Almost all that i can on tablet, i also can on my phone. And for some serious work i need keyboard and thats that. My wet dream is ultrabook but i cant justify cost

Transformer is only called tablet, but it is much more

A tablet has no advantages.

1) The main thing I use my Galaxy Tab 3 for is reading e-books.
It's pretty cool having a portable library where you can change the text size and color (red is easier on my eyes).
I really like to read, both fiction and non-fiction, and a phone is too small for that, even my Nexus 5, it's just too small. 7" is perfect for reading, as is 10"
2) Also, I have taken some vacations this year, and took a bunch of pictures that my family wants to see. Very easy to just bring a tablet if a family member is in the hospital (I have such a person) or if I go somewhere else, and I can show them come pics and videos right on the 10" tablet.
3) Work. Some of us work in fields where we would like to show pictures of things we sell or explain things to customers, and this comes in handy as a tool.
4) Games. I play chess and checkers on the 10" tablet sometimes and it's pretty fun. Some games really shine on a bigger screen.
Now what I find ridiculous, and I have seen this recently at a concert and at the zoo, is people taking pictures with their tablets, namely iPads. It's pretty crazy that you brought a tablet to that venue, and you're using it as a camera?
Really don't get that.
