Is there any way to increase the volume output from headphones when playing media, without using equalizers?
I've recently switched from 16ohm to 32ohm headphones, which made the volume output lower. I find that by shifting the EQ bars up causes too much distortion even though the volume increase isn't a lot.
I also tried an app called Volume Boost, which does in fact increase the volume, but it brings with it some bugs that affect the rest of the system.
So I know for a fact that the hardware is capable of outputting at much higher volumes than the default WITHOUT distortion. I would use the EQ if it didn't ruin the music.
So does any one know of any hacks that would allow this to be achieved, maybe at kernel level, or a config file which controls volume output?
I have no answer for you, but other then hardware modifications I don't believe so... Also this is a development, not General or Q&A...

There must be a way as many kernels include a volume increase. The reason I posted this in development is for that very reason, i.e. if there is a way to modify an existing kernel to include such a hack.
Tiamat has such a feature. Try it.

I'm using the Tiamat kernel with CM7 but music volume is the same as stock kernel.

I was thinking more along the lines of changing a variable in the phone. I know it can producer higher output without distortion, because Volume Boost did it.
Are you using CM7 DSP Manager? Maybe try a different player?

I have tried different players (plus I don't really want to switch players as I use PlayerPro which is awesome) and after you push DSP Manager or Volume+ (they both use the same built in Gingerbread EQ functionality) high enough, then the sound is distorted. Basically what I've realized is that any software that uses EQ ruins the sound when you put it loud. And I'm not even putting it ridiculously high.
What I am wondering is if there is a more low-level hack that directly increases output from the hardware. How do people achieve this in kernels or ROMs? E.g. the CoreDroid ROM claims to have a 20% volume increase... how is that achieved?
Surely some of you geniuses have an answer of some kind?
Or could point me in the right direction?
Does libaudioalsa.so have anything to do with volume outputs? I wouldn't messing with the source and compiling it, but I don't have a linux box and setting up a VM just to get the source for 1 file seems a bit overkill, so if someone could maybe send me CM7 libaudioalsa.so source for Saga would be awesome...?

Hey guys, I been trying to find a way to boost my volume lvl when watching a movie, the stock volume doesnt seem to be loud enough, my fan in my room drowns out the stock volume when pushed to near max lvl.
So far the only 2 apps that I found have been Volume+ and Equalizer so I wanted to know,
which of the two works best? If you use them what are your settings?
Can you have both Equalizer and Volume+ installed at the same time?
Or are you using a different app?
I currently have Volume+ installed and cant tell if its doing anything.
As far as Equalizer goes, i have no idea what bars to push up so i pushed them all up and that seem to help make my volume louder.

As far as I know, Volume+ was made to work with Gingerbread phones only as stated in the developers market page, meanwhile Equalizer has been officially updated to support Honeycomb tablet screen sizes. I have been using Equalizer myself since the Xoom launched back in February. It worked great then, and now it works even better with the recent Honeycomb UI update!
The best sound output settings would be to drag all of the bars up to +15dB. The bass booster intensity, virtualizer, and the reverb settings would all be your personal preference. It usually won't ever distort the sound in any way, but rather increase the overall system volume by... I'm going to say literally 10 times louder. You'll notice an immediate difference especially while listening to music or watching a movie. Also, make sure that you have the notification bar shortcut option checked as the equalizer can sometimes be shut down by the Android system. Doing so will force it to turn back on automatically after a few seconds time.
Been using this exact setup for months now, and couldn't be happier! Hope this helps.
Disagree with above post. Don't crank up all your sliders to Max. Increase DB means you will get more distortion especially bass. Yes it will be louder. But the audio quality is utter crap. Why trade loudness and throw away the quality sounds this machine can produce? Half way up or less and keep lowest bass and high trebble a bit further back is my Max recommendation for Equalizer app. Heck just experiment and listen. I have both apps. Volume+ was a godsend to my evo 3d. Ended up returning it anyways. The volume increase bar doesn't work the same way on zoom. Also once in a while you have to move certain sliders lower for the effect to kick back in. Overall it sounded fake, hallow, washed out. Equalizer is a way better app for the zoom. You can set profiles and specific files can use different profiles. You aren't losing loudness per say cause it never really worked on zoom like other phones and zoom is already loud. For speaker I just choose flat. All at zero. Better then what zoom had as default.

Hmm.. I have been doing what I said in my post above since I got the OG Droid pretty much since it launched. The Droid maxes out at 10dB. Been using DSPManager on it to drag all bars to max dB. Yes, I know what that means, but with this method you will not be turning the system volume all the way up. It will be much louder, and I have not noticed any quality issues while maxing the dB while my Xoom is connected to my 200 watt wireless speaker system with the subwoofer cranked all the way up. It will cause quality issues if the system volume is totally maxed out, of course. That's common sense, but you will not ever have the need to do such a thing if you simply just adjust your Xoom's system volume properly and accordingly. You pretty much never ever want to max out the system volume if you were to use these kind of heavy settings on an equalizer. Again, common sense.
But yes, that's why there are the adjustable bars for an equalizer. You can change the settings on the fly just as you please. No audio quality loss if you do it right. I'm a tech expert, and that's what I have been doing for years. Wouldn't ever change it because there is no quality loss if you do it correctly, and the sound is ten times louder. Only you can decide what works best for your situation. Thanks!

On my HTC Sensation, the in-call volume is so low that I can hardly hear the caller. I always have to switch to the speaker.
My in-call volume is set to max.
I think this happened after htc-sync upgraded the OS version to 2.3.4. My wife has exactly the same model but she does not have this problem. Her phone has not yet been upgraded.
I called HTC. They tell me that it is a known issue and to check back with them periodically. A lame answer:-(.
I would appreciate it if anyone has any idea on how to get my in-call volume back.

i'm experiencing the same low in-call volume, so i rooted my device and installed the leaked HTC Sense 3.5 ROM and it's better, but not where i want it to be. i also flashed the TMOBUS (T Mobile US) rooted stock ROM and it has a HAC (Hearing Aid Compatible) feature that significantly boosts in-call volume, but you cannot adjust the volume. it's been my experience that volume boosts can be added to the kernel. i wish i knew how to do that... also, don't know if the source code has been released .... wish i could offer more help!

that's not going to work... you have to tweak the kernel (or some other object) to boost in-call volume. (i would love to be wrong, but i tried that app already)
+1 on vol plus you can also trie mikes revolution 4.1 which is the 3.5 sense leak. volume was a major improvement. developement has just started on this leak but i ran it with no major problems

The APP does not affect the earpiece or call volume. Its only for the speaker and music.
Volume + has boosted ALL volume settings on my phone including speaker. My experience has been
that the app needs to be manually activated as it seems to not start up at boot or run in background.

i agree that the program works with in-call volume settings, or the same setting that you can adjust while on a call. the program does not amplify - or boost - the in-call volume like one can by manipulating the kernel (or other objects) so that it's louder. this type of manipulation is like adding an power-amplifier to a home-theater AV receiver. the net effect: on my Inc S with a stock kernel, my in-call volume setting would be level 4 (of 5). using a kernel with audio boost, my in-call volume setting is 2 and at most 3.

I bought the paid version of volume + over the weekend and actually got it to boost/amplify my call volume tremendously.
My only problem now is my new Anker battery is being drained at abnormal rates as a result from using this app. A 20 minute call costs 20=30% of battery life vs. before the app was installed.
Obviously the CPU is getting a work out just running the app. I would think the increased voltage to the speaker would constitute as some kind of amplification like a home theatre system.
Has anyone else experience abnormal battery life as a result from usning this app?
I noticed that after installing the ICS update the max volume is quieter than it used to be (possibly ASUS hack for fixing imbalance?) I would like to know if there is a way to boost the volume of the built-in speakers with an app or editing a file, please.

volume+ from the market.
PowerAmp music player and enable Direct Volume Control and/or gain in the app's settings. Tried Volume+ but to me it's just an equalizer thing, which seems to boost volume but at the cost of audio quality.
I have seen many equalizer apps and they create "loudness" not volume (basically boost the mid range near the high end)
My main problem is in Netflix, not music apps. The speaker just is not loud enough to watch anything on it without headphones anymore.

Install equalizer from market and crank everything up to maximum.
I experienced the same low volume problem after upgrading(?) to ICS, and Volume+ crashes immediately upon invocation for me. Have you found an adequate solution to the issue?

Supercurio is working on his Voodoo Plus app to be compatible with ICS, but I guess you already heard of that one. Available until Asus releases the kernel source to add modded kernels.

Same problem.went to market downloaded equalizer by smartandriod app clicked on custom slid bars all the way up but then the middle bar backed off a littlebit sounded to tinny enabled bass boost to around 80% sounds great and it's free.
The overall volume on the Nexus 5 (and every Android phone I have had) is very low. I even just rooted my phone to adjust the volumes in "mixer_paths.xml" only to realize that I can only adjust headphone and speaker volumes there.
Is there a way to increase all media volume, or at least Bluetooth volume?
With almost everything I play on my Nexus 5, I have to set the volume at about 90% to get the volume right. That leaves no range if I need to increase it when something was recorded at a low volume. I would like to make it so that a normal volume setting is more in the 50% range.

It increases the sounds system wide! If the normal apk install doesn't increase the system sounds, then push the apk in /system/priv-app/, fix permissions and reboot. It will surely work now

I found Viper4Android mentioned in other postings, but I am not fond of installing random packages off the Internet. Is there some way of verifying what that does before I install it?

I can assure you that v4a isn't some random mod floating around the internet. I've been using it since ages and it works perfectly.

You can also normalize those media files to the same volume as your other files. Easy to do if you're converting them yourself already.

I listen to things on BeyondPod and I haven't seen that they have any function for normalizing the audio. It would be nice since the podcasts seem to vary in volume. Actually, I guess that BeyondPod is the worst for having low volume. Pandora seems to vary in volume, but I don't usually have to set the volume to 100% to hear things.

I downloaded the source for viper4android from github and built it myself. Not that I went over every line of code before installing, but at least I know I made the apk.

And it seems to work! At least for headphones so far, but I will try bluetooth. It is much, much more complicated than I was wanting, but I guess if it changes the gain, then that is great.
It's great for wired headphones. I don't see it being able to do much with Bluetooth volume though. Unlike every other volume, bt isn't kernel managed. It's managed in the bt stack. Unless viper does something special that I'm not aware of

It looks like the Viper volume gain adjustment does work with Bluetooth media as well on my Nexus 5, so things are working for me.

Looking for a good way to increase volume slightly, specifically for the speaker or the bluetooth. I've found tons of great articles that talk about editing mixer_paths.xml. Those instructions work great on nearly every other android phone I've seen...but not the M8. The naming is completely different.
For example:
- Articles say to change the speaker, you need to go to the <path name="speaker"> section and change the volume.
- On the M8, that section is empty.
My guess is that it's different section names than other phones, but I haven't figured out which is which. Anyone know?
If you're rooted you can use V4a audio mod. It has a lot of settings including increasing the gain. Mine is so loud at full volume I actually have to talk over the sound coming from external speakers!

I'd prefer not to use V4a. Tried it, didn't care for it. I'd much rather find out the really easy text change in the mixer_paths.xml
