Updated my phone to 2.3.4. And few days later I notice that I have a phone number in my contacts its repeated about 500 to 1000 times and when I try to edit it doesn't giveme the option to delete. Its not part ofmy Google contacts its somehow I guess in the phone memory. How would I go about removing it? Any ideas

backup all of your contacts to something like google or outlook.
go to Settings>Applications>All>Contacts Storage & clear all data.
********CAUTION********** It will wipe all of your contacts on the phone.
Do that. Go to your backed up contacts & edit out what you don't want & then import back to phone.
Thanks, I ended up rooting the phone and installing revolution ROM , I'm happy with the result.

when i'm signed into HTC Sense, are my contacts automatically synced to HTC sense? If not, how can I back them up using my gmail or google?

You should have a google account to use the phone....so...turn on sync and go into settings>accounts and sync and make sure its syncing your contacts....log in on a PC to gmail and check there to double check.....
It's a tablet dammit! Not a BIG phone....
you can just export your contacts to your sd. its better that way, its crazy syncd with gmail and now, in my gmail account, there are 4x the contacts I have. contacts multiplied. i don't know why. @[email protected] and its gonna be sad to have 2k of contacts jump in to your phone
I've always sync'd to gmail/google since my my first android phone in '09 (G1), never had duplicate contacts and never had to do a backup/restore.

I have used sync with MS exchange- works good, but yet have troubles add Skype contacts into exchange.
There is no problem with syncing to Google. Only you must never, really never, restore contacts from a backup. You should only use Google Contacts or a backup, never both. When you restore a backup, you will get duplicates. Been there, with only a small number of contacts luckily, and besides this, never had a problem.

Agreed! I have T-Mobile, and the first thing I do when I get a new phone, after signing into my Google account, is uncheck the damn T-Mobile backup in Accounts & Sync. Of course, once you root, you can say goodbye to that, but in the meantime...

So thats why. lol. before I was using the contacts in my google account as I was using a different phone. now as i am just exporting/importing my contacts from sd card.
So to export your contacts to your sd card, just go to "contacts" and go to options, you should see a "import/export" contacts. just select the export to SD card. then, give it a name and save. to import your contacts, just go to contacts and select "import from sd(or external - forgot the name)"

Wait. Are *all* of your contacts already in Google contacts (on the web in Gmail, not on your phone)? If they are, there is no need to backup your contacts prior to flashing a new ROM, doing a full wipe, etc. In fact, I don't recommend that. So...if all of your contacts (or other Google data like calendar and gmail) are in google/gmail contacts on the web, skip their backup. Then, after you wipe your phone and flash whatever you're flashing, just sign into your Google account, and your contacts and any other data on Google severs will automatically be downloaded (and then set up for 2-way sync) without your needing to do any thing further.
Does that make sense?

Nope. Not unless you intentionally format sdcard from the settings or in recovery
Here's the thing I saved my friends contacts on the memory card and I can't rstore it ..idk why its saved as 0000.vcf but I can't restore it
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
When you restore it I assume you're doing it from the More>Import/Export>Import from SD card>Phone then it'll start scanning for v card data....right?
Yes that's how I'm doing it ...is it wrong way?
Nope. That's the right way. But another thing is if you're not seeing the contacts show up they might not be set to show up..... just to double check.... Contacts>Menu>View>make sure checkbox next to SIM is marked.... That's the only thing I can think of aside from a buggered up export.
try copying your vcf file to your computer and importing it to outlook. then, sync your phone with outlook contacts and lemme know what you find out.
even easier... go to the market and check out something like vCardIO
because... guess what... yeah, we've got an app for that too, but ours is free.
Just wanted to add gmail backs up contacts as well. I've flashed multiple times not saving and gmail restores all of them everytime. It won't save texts though gotta use a sms backup, nandroid, tb or backup them yourself.
And reflashing won't touch the sd card unless you hit format by mistake which would stink if you were installing a custom rom lol.

Gmail only backs up contacts if you have it set to backup contacts AND save them to your gmail account when you add a new contact to your phone. I have come across more people that don't than do. Mostly the uninformed/first time android users that still think you're supposed to save them to your sim card like back in the old days.
OP: MyBackup Pro is probably the easiest solution to backing up contacts, call logs, bookmarks, dictionary, sms, mms, settings, android home, etc. I use MyBackup Pro for all the mentioned and have it on a schedule to backup each night in case I decide to flash a rom on a whim and TiBackup for my apps/game data even though MyBackup Pro does it too but I just don't like the way it restores them.
Thanks guys buh I figered out the problem.....'y google acoount had a pink sign on sync so theierfore all of my contacts were on my phone (not synced) and I only had 2 contacts on my gmail since sync wasn't functioning properly...any way when I backed up by expoorting I choose to export from google acount which had only two contacts and the rest 219 contacts were on the phone itself unsynced ..any way I wiped without knowing and boom all gone and no backup either....bummmer

You can manually sync them as well. I normally sync up once a week. Find a wifi or use a friends phone to tether. Its worth it I have about 110 contacts myself and more if I sync facebook lol.

tmobile contact backup app from the stock rom may have saved your contacts for you. when i bricked my mt4g i thought i lost all my contacts but when i got the mt4gs that app brought them back automatically
OK. Probably a really stupid question and I expect some flaming, but, I have the one x and apparently many duplicate #'s for each contact. Why? And how do I get rid of this.
When I hold the contact # in text messages to call it asks me which # to call.... and they're all the same. One says mobile, history, etc...
Any thoughts
Delete each dupe. My thoughts are you got the phone and restored your contacts twice from two different sources I.e. Google backup and SIM contacts

Actually, HTC Sense allows you to pair numbers with the same name or number.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
There's actually an option within the address book to remove duplicate entries.
From within people if you go to menu, manage contacts, you'll then have am option to de-duplicate contacts.

After restoring and/or wipes I had duplicates after sync, even after deleting still reappeared. The only way it worked was to go into my Google account on the computer and delete them from there...

I think you have one copy in phone and one under google account
Every time I flash a rom I seem to lose contacts that I saved. Weird thing is its not the entire phone book its the newer contacts. Any help would be appreciated..

they should be synced to your google account
Is there any way to see what's there or sync what I have currently? Forgive me for the dumb question..
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Seriously, that's one of the main things with Android: it syncs all your stuff to Google. Your contacts ought to be restored every time you sign in after flashing. You must have syncing disabled in Settings if this isn't happening. Do it before you flash next time.
Went in settings and synced every option in my Google account.. Interesting that some contacts say Google and some say phone.. Thanks for the replies..

Best way to keep your contacts organized is to everything from the computer and then hit refresh on your phone, same thing with the calender i do it from the computer
You can also just use a an app such as titanium backup to backup your contacts and apps.

For reals?
It's a backup app that you can use to restore all of your applications after flashing. I have the paid version and sync all of my backups to my google drive. Probably the most useful app for a ROM flasher. You should check it out!
I haven't seen anyone do this but its my favorite and easiest method. I save all my contacts to a .vcf file on the root of my ad card by going to contacts/menu/manage contacts/export to phone storage. Then when I flash a Rom I immediately go to contacts/menu/import contacts. And it automatically looks for that .vcf file and flashes Ur contacts.

And whenever I add a New contact I just delete that file and re-export contacts to phone storage.

Just login to Gmail on your PC/Mac, and see if your contacts are there.
As long as the phone is set to sync to Google (Settings>Accounts & sync) it should be backing up your contacts to your Gmail account as default, no other actions required.
I made a mistake and all my contacts from google account has gone. Is there any way, any solution to recover them ?
I assume that you have never backuped your contacts to SD card ?
Nope, never ever.

Ouch man :/ I would look at the Google dashboard and see if your contacts are there underneath the android phone tab and look if it has a restore deleted contacts. Also if you have ever made a nandroid back up before you could reflash it and restore all the contacts you had up to that point .
