[Q] Htc one X - multiple duplicate #'s? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

OK. Probably a really stupid question and I expect some flaming, but, I have the one x and apparently many duplicate #'s for each contact. Why? And how do I get rid of this.
When I hold the contact # in text messages to call it asks me which # to call.... and they're all the same. One says mobile, history, etc...
Any thoughts

Delete each dupe. My thoughts are you got the phone and restored your contacts twice from two different sources I.e. Google backup and SIM contacts

Actually, HTC Sense allows you to pair numbers with the same name or number.

There's actually an option within the address book to remove duplicate entries.
From within people if you go to menu, manage contacts, you'll then have am option to de-duplicate contacts.

After restoring and/or wipes I had duplicates after sync, even after deleting still reappeared. The only way it worked was to go into my Google account on the computer and delete them from there...

Contacts showing multiple only when searching

As the screen shots below show when im using the contacts its fine (1 contact per name) but when i search for a specific person 6 or more contacts show up for that name. I wouldnt mind this but when i save a new number say from a text message and try to add it to the exsisting its like a guessing game which one to put it under because only 1 shows up under contacts normally. If i add it to the first one it says saved but then going into contacts its never there.
Stock 4.0.4 rooted.

I have run into this. You more than likely have more than one account syncing your contact (google, samsung, verizon?) To get rid of the contacts (multiple) Sync them to only one account, delete all contacts, then resync. Hope this helps.

When you have multiple accounts syncing the phone can't always reconcile small differences. If you long press on a contact you can join it to another one manually. It's been something I've had to do since I let Facebook sync.

[Q] some contacts double on phone

seems like restaurants I have saved in People are all doubled.
I tried to delete the doubles, People/Menu/Manage/de-duplicate.
It did delete a great many, but many restaurants are still duplicated; and the entries are exactly the same, near as I can tell.
Ideas?
I think you can go onto Gmail/ contacts and remove duplicates or type it in google and you'll get your answer.

Try a program called wondershare Mobile go . It will merge your duplicate contacts.

I should have been clearer. It's only affects contacts on phone. Gmail web mail contacts are all good no duplicates.

Wondershare mobilego is a free app you install it on your PC. It doesn't matter where the contacts are it will merge them. Even if they're on Google or your phone.

within People on the phone, one can select Menu/Manage Contacts/De-duplicate and more or less get the job done.
But the odd thing was is that there were dupes on the phone, but not on the google webmail/contacts tab. Nor OSX Address Book.

What's the best way to save contacts?

Every time I flash a rom I seem to lose contacts that I saved. Weird thing is its not the entire phone book its the newer contacts. Any help would be appreciated..

they should be synced to your google account
Is there any way to see what's there or sync what I have currently? Forgive me for the dumb question..

Seriously, that's one of the main things with Android: it syncs all your stuff to Google. Your contacts ought to be restored every time you sign in after flashing. You must have syncing disabled in Settings if this isn't happening. Do it before you flash next time.
Went in settings and synced every option in my Google account.. Interesting that some contacts say Google and some say phone.. Thanks for the replies..

Best way to keep your contacts organized is to everything from the computer and then hit refresh on your phone, same thing with the calender i do it from the computer
You can also just use a an app such as titanium backup to backup your contacts and apps.

For reals?
It's a backup app that you can use to restore all of your applications after flashing. I have the paid version and sync all of my backups to my google drive. Probably the most useful app for a ROM flasher. You should check it out!
I haven't seen anyone do this but its my favorite and easiest method. I save all my contacts to a .vcf file on the root of my ad card by going to contacts/menu/manage contacts/export to phone storage. Then when I flash a Rom I immediately go to contacts/menu/import contacts. And it automatically looks for that .vcf file and flashes Ur contacts.

And whenever I add a New contact I just delete that file and re-export contacts to phone storage.

Just login to Gmail on your PC/Mac, and see if your contacts are there.
As long as the phone is set to sync to Google (Settings>Accounts & sync) it should be backing up your contacts to your Gmail account as default, no other actions required.

Newbie

Is there a way to flash a Rom whilst keeping all personal information such as contact numbers? Sorry if this is a pretty obvious question, I'm new to all this.
It depends where your contacts are stored . Do you sync with gmail?

My contact list is automatically restored from Google. As are my wallpaper and apps.

Unfortunately, many of the numbers stored in my phone do not end up syncing with the contacts in my Gmail account. A few months ago, I had flashed Cleanrom to my phone and I tried to sync with Gmail to restore my contacts, but I ended up losing around half of my contact numbers. The actual contacts were there, but they didn't have phone numbers assigned to them, only email addresses. I want to try installing some mods for CleanRom via Aroma (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1666520) but I'm worried that the situation will replicate itself again.
You can check what contacts are stored in your Google account. This will allow you to know what is synced. Also a phone can generally store contacts in 2 places. Locally and synced to Google. There is usually a way to sync all phone only contacts. I know touchwiz had it as an option in their people app.

Contacts on phone instead of Google

How can I tell if a contact is saved to Google or my phone on jellybean? And is there an option to change it if it's saved to the phone?

The only way that I could find regarding your first question is the "link" status when you are viewing the contact details (located above the contact photo, to the left of the menu icon). If it shows a broken chain and says "phone", then the contact is stored on your phone. If is shows an unbroken chain and says "link", then it is linked to another account (click on the link icon to view the links), which in most cases will be Google.
And to your second question...for as long as I can recall, there hasn't been any easy way to change where a contact is stored short of creating a new one. This is kind of a pain, because it's sometimes easy to forget to save a new contact to Google and save it to the phone instead (my daughter has done this numerous times). It's not too horribly bad, though, because you can always create the contact fairly quick in Gmail on the computer. Maybe someday (in Android Marzipan) that feature will be available.
Contacts->menu->manage contacts->copy contacts, select from _phone_ to your Google account.

Oh, to answer the first question: go to contacts, on the drop down menu (top left) where it says Phonebook select which ones you want to see (phone or your Google account)

Go to sync accounts and click Google then check auto sync contacts. It will back up contacts everytime Google syncs.
