does gsm /umts have a weaker building penetration than cdma? - T-Mobile LG G2x

I have used 2 different cdma carriers, last one was sprint their in building was ok, i guess good enough to always have a signal... with tmobile the inbuilding has been a nightmare I just cant understand... i have full bars outside but no service inside of certain buildings.... is this due to the technology or is it just tmo?

It must be a perfect storm of bad circumstances where you are at that's all I could think of.

Well, if your CDMA carrier uses freqs lower than 1700 MHz, then they will have better building penetration.
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk

the lower the frequency the better it can penetrate a building... since Tmobile 3/4g uses a high frequency, tough luck... AM/FM radio waves are the same way, granted you would never notice it but AM "travels much farther" because of the same theory, less resistance in the air...

It's not about air resitance but the relative wavelength to the speficied frequency. It's inversely proportional to each other.

If your having troubles with signal you might need one of these; after all, with an antenna like that you could probably get a signal on the Internal Space Station right?

"Air resistance" was a very loose and prolly bad term... you are correct though the longer wave lengths that higher frequencies require make it much harder to "penetrate" objects such as walls... a typical router or wireless home phone uses some band of the 2.4ghz frequency which is why you cannot stray much farther than maybe 100-200 feet from your house before it loses signal... same applies to bluetooth... keep in mind you do have to consider the strength of the actual signal that is being put out as well so its not like you can compare a cell tower covering a vast area at 2000mhz vs a small hand held device that outputs a 2000mhz...

Most mobile companies invest on higher frequency towers in cities and metropolitan areas while lower frequency in rural areas.

T-Mobile probably has the worst coverage footprint in the U.S.A. Verizon has the best ("Can you hear me now?") Wherever the closest TMO tower is it cannot penetrate through whatever structure she works in. She could always use the Wifi calling feature and connect through her employer's wifi (if they have and will allow her to do that). Otherwise returning them is probably the best option for you; but you'll be missing out on a great device. Verizon and AT&T run primarily on 850, which has the best signal penetration due to electromagnetic wave propagation. TMO operates on 1700/2100 (3G) and 1900 (2G) so their signal will not penetrate structures as well as Verizon and AT&T. Sprint is operating on 1900, which is also subject to penetration issues due to the smaller wavelength of their signal, so if she gets that then they must have a tower closer or installed micro cells in the building she works in.

As the G2x is my first T-Mobile phone I am not sure if it has better worse or equal reception phone vs other phone....I have read various reports on both sides, and it seems to be a toss up on what is the real story.
The Wifi calling I use quite a lot in house. Its a nice free feature.
I have found that energy efficient double glazed windows with their hi-tech coatings block the signal significantly. These are nice solar windows, if you are outside they will reflect heat at you yards away.
If I open the window I can get full 4G connection, close the window and I am lucky to get a single bar of voice only.
What others are saying about the frequency makes tons of sense now for how I see signal strength changes.
If you can not call out on a phone, its just a micro tablet, and you still need a phone. Switch carriers.

It has better 3G reception on 2100Mhz than other devices I have tried. Where I live is right on the edge of my carrier's 3G signal and it is going through a complex of condo buildings to get to me. The G2X gets a stronger signal than other phones I have tried here.

this stabilized my 4g signal

First off, i bought this because it was a $1 at the time while i was getting some cases and a other stuff on the off chance it would work. I've actually had it for a month and just barely decided to put it on today to check it out.
some stuff on this site can be pretty low quality. but anyways... I put this (making sure the part that says upside with arrow is pointing up) under my battery to the left of the white sticker with the serial numbers for my phone. and i made sure not to touch the sticky back except just on the edge. i used the cardboard that came with to smooth it down onto plastic.
now this seemed to maybe add a bar or less but that isn't what i liked. it definitely helped my phone from dropping from 4g to 2g constantly from low signal in my house. and in my house I almost NEVER can stay on 4g, we have a lot of electronics in our house plus we need another cell tower out here in Salt Lake (West Jordan) in my area or something. but my phone signal has only dropped down below 4g one time and went from 1-2 bars, sometimes 3 bars to 2-3, usually 3 bars consistently all day since i put it on this morning. this can't be a coincidence because i know my house and this is my 5th g2x and also my last vibrant all had a bad signal dropping problem. so try it out if you want, the promo code CELL7 is posted saying 7% off too. also promo code freeship gives free shipping it looks like if you order over $25 worth of stuff.
im interested to see if this works for others. like i said though it more stopped my signal from jumping around than really adding a bunch of bars or anything. but for a buck its cool with me
the ad honestly looks like a bunch of B.S. but if anyone ends up buying it let me know if you have similar results.

Wow! I tried stuff like this on other phones. I noticed no difference.
Glad it helped you out.

lol yeah. well im going to say that it doesnt seem to help a much after having it for a bit.. its a little better but i actually have noticed a better improvement by keeping my account 1.0 and wifi calling installed and unfrozen. Signal seems to jump around less. but at the cost of some battery.... not sure which is more significant for me. its bull**** that if i drive down the road a little i get full bars with 4g but in my house/neighborhood i get 1-3 bars
How can an antenna work if it isn't physically connected to the board? These things are just a rip off.
If they actually worked, wouldn't you think these would be a gold mine; or they would implement them into the phone casing or battery cover?

Not necessarily...sometimes I need to tether at work (absolutely no data signal better than a couple bars of 2G). I grab a metal colander from the kitchen, loop my phone over the top, and point it toward the nearest tower...viola...2 to 3 bars of 4G. I know that wasn't really your point...but...
The colander thing works if you don't mind the crazy looks that come with it...I kinda enjoy 'em.
I agree a colander will work because, just like wifi, cellular is radial vs directional.
If you make wifi or cellular directional by ways of a pringles can or a metal colander, that is one thing. But a ball of wires next to your phone won't do anything, which essentially is what that antenna sticker is, just a coil of wire.
They really are a rip off. Mind over matter I guess. If you "feel" it works then it is worth a dollar (which is a ripoff in itself since they can be had for $.25/free)

The HTC Sensation Death Grip - GSMArena

Is this the reason why people seem to be suffering with poor signal? Not good news
HTC Sensation suffers from death grip, iPhone 4 caught snickering
But then again nobody I know carries the phone around flat in the palm of their hand, so probably just another overreaction from the HTC Haters
just saw this at gsmarena too... can anyone do a re-test if this is true? i want to get an htc phone but these things really bother me.. please confirm guys
Just about every phone I've ever had had a death grip issue, including the Vibrant and the MT4G. Since the phones had to be held in a particularly unorthodox manner to experience this, it was a non-issue.

I agree, if you look at the video of the Bluetooth music, when holding the phone in the normal position it works perfectly.
Yep. Just people overreacting and trying to make news.
I'd love to see a video of a phone that can't be made to suffer some signal loss by holding it in a certain way.
The key question is does it suffer significant loss by holding it in a normal manner. More practically do you get wifi, call or GPS drops when using the phone normally. Show me that video and I'll care.
I don't see this as an issue since how often or why do would you need to put a death grip on your phone
Tried to replicate these issues, cannot. The initial signals must be too weak to start with, so disappear completely - or, the whole thing is a fake.....?
Bluetooth is shorter range anyway, isn't that the point, it's meant to be low power.
My Sensation wifi reception isn't the greatest but I have no issue with it, however I hold the phone
Tbh I am surprised at a site like gsmarena posting 'sensational' claims..... without knowing the whole story.
In 2 words: bull ****.
Really, I can't understand why people are searching those issues which are not issues at all O-o
I mean, every phone does suffer from signal drops and all that kind of things, but well.. it really depends in which position.
If you look in the video, the phone works perfectly when holding it normally.. just when you hold it like I dont know what ( who will hold it like this?) the signal drops.
So I think there is nothing to worry about..
I think that this is a valid issue since when you browse the internet and hold the phone horizontally for landscape viewing then this might cause the wifi signal to drop. I have read this issue also on the HTC Desire S. I went to the store to try and its really true that when you hold it horizontally, the wifi signal would drop. So i guess that this is also happening on the HTC Sensation.

It's because SlashGear has the US version while GSMArena has the UK one.
Yeah, apparently the 4G model has an extra contact point.
The T-Mobile version needs another contact because of 1700 MHz band (not sure, I'm just guessing)
if the sensation is anything like the HD2, the GSM Antenna is in the lower part. On top are the Wifi+BT (same Antenna) and the GPS. Total of three antennas.
Also, the HD2 had the same arrangment were the back cover (plastic)had all the antennas & they were connected by similar conacts. The difference simply is that with the sensation the cover comes out when removing the battery while the HD2 had the plastic back fixed. So if there is a problem with this design we should have noticed it in the HD2 first.
Another thing, the BT streaming sample done, as per swedish source was done at 6m distance. which kinda long for purpose of bluetooth!!
Does that mean the Sensation's Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, Radios won't work if the back cover is removed? That would be too bad coz my HD2 works fine even if the battery is exposed..
Today I found out that I am also suffering with my sensation.
It is absolutely no bull****.
This is my third HTC, I have next to my Sensation a HD2.
With my HD2 the deathgrip was only a problem when i cover the hole with my top hand, i never normaly do that so it wasn't a problem.
But with my sensation its a much bigger problem.
If i hold him in my right hand, there is no problem.
if i hold him in my left hand and touch with my right finger then you see that he is losing signal.
if i hold him in landscape mode then almost all my wifi signal is gone.
If i hold him in my right hand and tick with my right finger on the top of the sensation, the wifi wignal drops down.
And the biggest problem is that he loses the wifi signal and then he is searching again for wifi.
I have never tested Bluetooth, and i have 3 antenna points in the cover.
maybe i will make a video later.
and sorry for my bad english, google translate Helps me

Hard to belive ppl are not thinking this is a problem.

[Idea] Super Antenna

I was wondering seen as how we have an external antenna couldn't you build something that attaches to it and improves phone signal or make a cantenna? Any suggestions on how to do this?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
I don't know how much help this will be but I love the DIY spirit so here are some of my ideas.
Connecting to the existing antenna array could be achieved by attaching wires into the existing contact points in the back plates, then route through the camera lens opening out of the phone. The wires will have to be thin so that is something to consider. i.e. more fragile at longer lengths.
The new antennas could be based existing off the shelf parts or from existing DIY projects for each respective technology, but AFAIK you cannot use a single cantenna type device. Due to the different frequencies used for WiFi/Bluetooth vs. GSM vs HSPA+. I am unsure about how many you will need as a minimum or if there are special power requirements between the different technologies involved here.
Power will have to be another consideration. Not 100% certain, but I believe to get these "super" antennas to be truly super, you will need to increase the power to them. This will of course lessen battery life. So that would be another consideration. This mod might spawn a separate battery mod/swap.
I am not sure if this is cost effective or not, but DIY doesn't always consider cost. Of course if you are planning on using this to power some autonomous super killer robot, that can record in 1080P, and stream back live VGA video using the hardware built into the phone this could work out pretty well.

I think the one above the camera hole is for wifi because I saw a youtube video of a guy that took some tin foil and stuck it in the hole on the phone where that connector would make contact and it gave him a really strong wifi signal. He took out the foil and the signal dropped. So I'm thinking that the connector on the top is wifi. The strange thing is I also have an unbranded euro/asian sensation and it has one less connector than the TMO us one (but uses the same mobile bands/radios) and when I use that cover on my US sensation there is no signal difference. So I really wonder what that extra one is for, since I have noticed no signal difference when using one over the other on the US phone.

Maybe T-Mobile uses AWS bands for HSPA+? I'm not sure if that's even possible, but I don't know much about that stuff.
Anyway, I believe the antennas are:
Above the camera: Wi-fi
Below the camera: BT? (correct me if I'm wrong)
On the bottom cover: Mobile network
And @joemm Lmao!

No, My Asian sensation has the same bands as my tmo sensation. It has the AWS band and gets the same download speeds as my TMO version. If it wasnt the same bands I wouldnt even get 3g, I would be stuck on edge. Tmo's 3g and 4g(HSPA+) run on the same frequencies. So if you have a phone that doesnt have the AWS band and the phone supports 3g and 4g you will only get 2g speeds. I believe All the the sensations first released had the AWS bands. I think only now are they starting to release versions with different bands. I know a while back a sensation passed through the fcc with att bands. Maybe those are the ones we are seeing popping up on Bell now?

Hmm, not sure how good this idea would be, but it's worth a shot
I'm thinking as the antenna has to be of a specific length to work, this length is determined by the frequenzy of the signal
Here is some examples : http://www.air-stream.org.au/wavelength

It should be possible if we could get a flexi pcb that we stick inside over the exisining connections and route outside and fold around that sticks down. I dont think we need more power, just a increased area. Should be easy to do.

5G is coming to the Midlands first. (UK)

It has just been announced that the 5G network will be coming to the West Midlands for first trials in the UK.
What is 5G ?
5G is about to be launched as the latest and fastest mobile phone network. It will be expected to be 1000x faster than 4G which is (depending on comparison of network quality type) roughly 50x quicker than 3G. (see link at bottom of post for indepth info)
Will 5G cook our brains and can I fry toast in front of the cellnet ?
There is a massive debate, conspiracy or not on this matter but the technical side of this, in laymans terms works something like this;
As frequencies get higher and bandwidth gets wider, more power is needed to send signals, which is where most of the scare story comes from. However, Also as frequencies get higher, aerials / antennae get smaller, thus it is much more possible to place lower powered antennae closer together. So to some degree, we don't need to take at least some of the risk said to be involved. Spooky eh ?
Look on social media for paranoia vs conspiracy on these matters.
What will 5G mean for the networks and customers ? RIP MP3 ?
The sooner 5G takes hold of the market, the more 4G and 3G will be freed up. As a result, data will inevitably get cheaper and cheaper and we will have a set of networks that can cope with unlimited connections for the masses. No doubt the "idiots" out there who want to download and host everything and blackmarket it will cause the network owners to look into how this is dealt with and let's hope they do a better job than last time.
However, 5G networks will be able to transfer full HD movies in less than 15-20 seconds. An mp3 should have downloaded completely, almost before it has been released and you have realised you want it.
There is a question about mp3s becoming irrelevant if battery life on devices can cope with lengthy screen usage making video the new mp3. Now you see those phones coming with 12,000maH and battery banks becoming a very serious commodity. Combine those batteries on our devices and 12 TB drives on home networks and you truly will be able to access your vast home catalogues anywhere in the world.
So what about 5G phones ?
Sadly, like 4G networks and 3G phones, 4G phones will not work on 5G networks.
Question, where is the phone industry on this ?
Just some thoughts and hopefully some knowledge from this tiny brain of mine. :good:
I do not work in the industry at all, but I do appreciate good quality tech, especially at budget prices.

There is a massive debate, conspiracy or not on this matter but the technical side of this, in laymans terms works something like this;
As frequencies get higher and bandwidth gets wider, more power is needed to send signals, which is where most of the scare story comes from. However, Also as frequencies get higher, aerials / antennae get smaller, thus it is much more possible to place lower powered antennae closer together. So to some degree, we don't need to take at least some of the risk said to be involved. Spooky eh ?

Cool! Rather, 5G technology has spread around the world.
5g will replace 4g in all other countries, including the UK shortly. 5G can provide wireless broadband, better broadcasting technology, higher automation and autonomy across everything from producing to automotive, and support for a more significant density of connected devices, support for new categories of connected devices and many more.
Great
Great news ! 5G generation!

It is good news to have 5G in the midland..:good::good:

Question T'Eyes CC3 2K - Slow 4G Internet / Antenna Placement

Hi guys,
Quick question: what is the best antenna placement for the T'Eyes CC3 2K for best signal reception ?
My installer placed the 4G & Wifi 5G antennas sticked on the left pillar (driver side, under the factory cover, next to each other - like 2 cm apart) and the GPS on the same side a little lower towards the dash.
4G reception was pretty slow compared to the test I did on my phone in the same location (same carrier, using speedtest app)
Then I had my installer move the GPS antenna on the opposite side (passenger pillar), leaving the 4G and 5G/Wifi in place, next to each other on the left pillar.
Didn't see a big improvement ...
I am using a SIM card installed in the external adapter located in my glove box.
Do you think the 4G mounted next to the 5G / Wifi is causing the slow speeds ?
Or is it just the carrier / GPS & LTE bands available on the T'Eyes CC3 2K for my location ?
In the same locations, my iPhone is fast on 4g
Thanks again !

You're going to get a better signal and better speed on most mobile phones.
The modems are just better designed and usually support more frequency bands.
The same goes for 4g/5g routers. The throughput is often much lower than a mobile phone.
I get faster speeds tethering from my mobile to the head unit than I get by putting the SIM directly in the head unit.

Yes i was thinking maybe the smartphone has much better hardware for 4G/5G.
I will try to use the mobile hotspot for a few days and see how i like it.
Thanks for replying !
I was facing same problem and was wondering what i did wrong. In the beginning was thinking that the GPS antenna interfere (i put Cellular and GPS antenna in between 30 cm) but looks like i should get used with it

What did the seller suggest when contacted for support?
I didn’t contacted the seller. I went back to their recommended installer and ask them to move the GPS antenna on the other side.
Still same behavior afterwards.
I think it’s just the hardware and the limited GPS/LTE bands supported by it
If we think about it, our smartphones have all antennas crammed into a small case without any issues. It’s just better hardware.

This must be hardware issue, funny enough crappy YT57B very slow, fake parameters head unit had much better reception than my new Teyes CC3 6G, what a shame.
