[Q] NOOB needs help w/milestone x - General Questions and Answers

I have rooted an alltel motorola milestone x. From what ive read this is the same phone as droid x. ive tried several times to install roms from clockwork rom manager with no luck. phone just reboots and is back to normal. Should i be looking for milestone x specific roms or will droid x ones work. if i use one will it recognize alltel as my carrier or will it make my phone a big mp3 player

That your phone reboots to normal is an indication that no kind of installation took place.
At least your phone would NOT boot because you used an incorrect rom.
I'm note sure about droid x rom vs milestone rom, but did you check
this thread.
It has pretty clean guides.
There is also a subthread with steps for ROM installation that lists available custom ROMs.
Regarding your carrier i would make sure the rom you flash has a modem compatible with your carrier, i.e. right frequencies.

[Q] ROM Manager doesn't recognize Droid Incredible clockworkmod

I have been trying to use ROM Manager for weeks on my DInc so I can try out different ROMs. I successfully rooted my phone, but have been using the stock 2.2 HTC ROM. ROM Manager doesn't recognize my Clockwordmod and I can't use any of ROM Manager's features because it says I need to download Clockworkmod through the app. Whenever I try, the progress bar gets to like 30% and throws an error.
The only I can think might be causing this is I have a refurbished Droid Incredible so it has an SLCD display and I had to use a different recovery image (attached below) than goes on most CDMA Incredibles.
HELP!!!
I'm not sure what's going on in your situation, but I would recommend you contact Koush. he made clockworkmod, ROM manager, AND develops cyanogenmod for the incredible, so he would be the man with all the answers. you can get all his contact info from the android market page for ROM manager.

Question installing a rom backup on a different phone

I have Frankenclean 2.8 on my fascinate (I love it btw) and I finally got approved for a replacement phone (droid x) because the fascinate has a reception issue that has yet to be resolved. I figured seeings how the phone was going to be discontinued I might as well try to get the X as it doesn't have a reception issue.
My question is this.
Can I backup my current rom using the boot loader.
Root my Droid X and install said backup from my fascinate?
No one knows ? I have 2 days before I need to send the phone back, if I can't install the backup on the X then I'm sticking with poor reception.

[Q] Clean Rom

Hello everyone,
What exactly does Clean Rom do? How is it different from what comes with the phone stock? Will Clean Rom mess with the updates that are pushed to our phones? Any big differences between layout?
Sorry for all the questions. I'm just not familiar with modifying my phone.
Must read more. Spend as much time as you can reading in the dev section. Clean ROM removes all of the ATT bloat and adds functionality like the FM radio and remapping the 3 dot menu button that takes up screen real-estate to the recent apps softkey. The recent apps can be accessed by holding down the home button, like we're familiar with. It also has performance and battery tweaks (says so in the changelog, haven't been using it long enough to notice). I flashed it the day before yesterday and I'm liking it.

Clean Rom doesn't use profane language, think of it as the Will Smith of Roms...

Did you bother to go to the Development forum, and read the CleanROM threads? They very well describe the features of each version of CleanROM.
You don't ever want to install an OTA update once on a custom ROM. It won't be compatible. Either it won't install, or it will remove root, or it will totally bork the system. The devs typically keep their ROM updated to the newest firmware base, and often long before the OTAs go out. So there is virtually never a benefit to updating via OTA (even if it did work).
Most custom ROMs prevent you from even getting an update pushed in the first place. Kind of a non-issue there.
To the OP, if you want to flash custom, just do it. Spend a few days on Clean, try out Smokin's ROM, too. Just find something you like. Worst that can happen is you RUU back to stock.

Depends on the device, and I believe the carrier (and maybe the custom ROM as you mentioned). I've gotten OTA notification, and even able to download OTA (didn't install it, just to see if it would actually download . . . some have said custom ROMs will prevent that too) on 2 previous HTC devices on custom ROMs. But one was a Canada Bell phone used on AT&T, and the other was the WiFi-only Flyer tablet. So it may be that AT&T somehow directly blocks OTA to rooted phones.

I don't think att can see your on a custom ROM, it has to do with if the developer is able to include that ability or not.
Thank you for the replies!
I'm trying my best to understand how Clean Rom works. Is it the same thing as rooting a phone? Any disadvantages of using Clean Rom?
I'm just curious about how it works because I tried jailbreaking my iPhone and that made it very crash prone. It's a bad example but it's the reason why I never tried using custom software again but I'm interested in giving this a try. I only get about 2 hours screen time and about 12 hours of screen off time for my phone to die.
I did the HTC battery test and my phone went down to 92% so I'm pretty sure it's not the battery that's wrong with the phone.

It appears you need to do more reading to get a better understanding or root, ROMs, etc.
Root is just a change of permissions on your phone. It allows the user and apps access to system files that are normally restricted. Nothing more, nothing less.
Clean ROM (or installation of any custom ROM) is a total replacement of the firmware or operating system of the phone (also called a "ROM"). Clean ROM in particular is mostly based on the latest stock firmware version, but cleaned up to remove bloat, optimizations to make it faster and smoother, and some cool added features. There are 3 different versions of CleanROM. Just read the threads for each version to learn the differences.
I don't really keep up with iPhone stuff. But my understanding is that jailbreaking adds functionality, but makes the system less stable.
Whether a custom ROM on Android makes the phone more or less stable depends on the ROM. Some are ported from other phones, to give new UI look or functions, but can be a bit buggy at first. But any good ROM will be stable once it reaches "maturity" and the bugs are worked out. They can be very stable, and even more stable and smoother than the stock ROM. Which is one of the points of running a custom ROM.
CleanROM in particular is based on stock firmware, just cleaned up. So its very stable. Just as stable as stock, a bit smoother in some places, and with some awesome added features. Any disadvantages? Not really. But you need to unlock the bootloader to install any custom ROM, which voids the warranty. nd flashing anything to the phone has the risk of damage if you don't follow the instructions properly. Thats the only downsides I can think of (for any custom ROM, not just for CleanROM).
Redpoint had an excellent summary.
If you're looking for battery life improvement, there are significant advantages to a custom ROM. Some will allow you to adjust the clock rate for the processors. So you can turn the up a bit (overclock) to get incredible performance, or you can turn them down a bit (underclock) to get better battery life.
If that's your main goal, I personally suggest Sick Sense from Smokingl337. He has incorporated this into his ROM, and the reports I've seen have been positive. I had used his ROM before, and I did like it. The day I flashed CleanROM due to a minor bug, Smokinl337 updated his ROM to fix that bug. Figures! But I'll be going back to Sick Sense pretty soon, I'm sure.
Hopefully you can find something that works for you.

Different kernel or different radio may also help battery life.
But you need to root, SuperCID, and unlock bootloader to do any of these things (including flashing custom ROMs). So head over to Development and start reading:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
There is also a clean rom developers edition that takes out most of the HTC sense... there is the cm9 alpha 4 rom that seems very stable...

OP, I was in your shoes last week. New to android/roms etc. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and flashed Clean Rom. Just follow the instructions in the associated threads and you'll be fine.

[Q] Droid 3 Bootstrap Flashing ROM

Hi,
So I've tried reading to solve my problem, but didn't find quite the direct answer yet.
I've been working on installing Steel Droid v5.6 on my Droid 3. I got it rooted, and then installed the modified safestrap by Rick#2. I feel like I shoulda stuck to the original.
My questions are:
What is the exact different between safe and unsafe mode in the safestrap. Which one should the custom ROM go on?
How can I be sure I have my original files saved, incase I decide to abandon a custom ROM.
Thanks

[Q] FIDO Razr HD LTE problem?!?!?!?

I'm really new to android and i thought i was smart enough to install cyanagen mod but i messed upppppp
what i used to do everything was the droid razr hd utility i did everything correctly except rembering to make backup of my phone
so i searched the web nd found that i could still save my phone by using the droid utility to it back to stock android, i thought this would put my phone to factory but i was wrong instead it turned my phone from the xt925 to the xt926 and changed from fido to verizon. Now, when I boot the phone, I still get the message 'Bootloader is unlocked'. I saw a large number of Verizon specific apps. When booting the phone, instead of the Motorolla 'M' icon/splash, I get a 'Droid' icon, with sound-effects. Also, System Version shows as 9.16.XT926.Verizone.en.US (even though my phone is an XT925 on FIDO)
i know im supposed to flash a jb file and i found it i just dont understand how to delete the gevlar lines and i dont know what lined are can someone tell me
also i have no idea how to flash anything thats why i used the droid utility pleassse some one help me get back to the canada version pleeeasee thanks a lot
i also attached the a picture of the xml file in the jb file can someone show me what to delete and waht to do after
Same issue here, I feel like an idiot for flashing an XT926 rom on. Now when I flash CM11, Liquid Smooth, or any other rom my phone cannot connect to Fido.
If you find a solution please let me know, Thanks.

P.S. I ended up buying a new phone so I've been Googling and trying solutions for months. I found the stock roms here (sbf.droid-developers DOT org/phone.php?device=6) but they don't seem to solve the problem.
Fixed it!!!
Ok, so the root of the problem is that the Droid Utility while claiming to be designed for XT925 and XT926 it only flashes the XT926 factory recovery. That is where you and I both went wrong, we read the instructions and believed it would work on XT925.
Since this is a junk phone now that I bought a new one I decided to screw around. I downloaded the factory firmware from the link in my last post, most of the files are the same as in the XT926 folder in the Droid Utility folder (obviously the files the utility uses for recovery). I renamed, where necessary the files from the XT925 download and moved them all over to the Droid Utility XT926 folder. I left the .xml file in place. I then ran the factory recovery (option 1, then option 1 again). So, the utility thought it was flashing XT926 but in fact it was flashing 925 files. After that I booted up and it asked if I wanted to wipe and apply settings from the sim car, I did and it rebooted twice and now I can make calls and have a stock XT925 that works. It's still rooted but the recovery seems to have been wiped and it goes to the dead android (exclamation mark droid) when you select recovery. That should be easy to fix.
For anyone searching for the wifi issues that I also had, this seems to have fixed that. When the device first booted up the wifi button was still greyed out and you couldn't turn on wifi. Once it wiped the device and applied the settings from the sim card the wifi became active and I could connect. I can also connect to LTE.
As I said, this is a backup device for me now so if you want me to do any messing around or take pictures I'm happy to.
