Captivate drowned in toilet

My Captivate fell off into the toilet for 2 seconds It was playing music and continued doing so after I took it out. I immediately took the battery out and dried it. I waited for the next day to try it again, just to make sure it dried completely. It seemed to work fine for a while, then I noticed I wasn't able to make calls all the time and it took the sim card some time to get recognized. (Sim card works fine on another phone)
The battery is dying faster, but that's not a big deal, I can replace it. Also I've noticed I can't boot the phone anymore without a battery.. I thought this was possible before. right?
Not sure what to do now. I'm using another backup phone for calls, and the captivate for everything else.

How did you dry it? Did you drop it in rice? I hear that's the best way.

You need to have the battery to boot the phone up...

I hear that if your phone does get wet what your suppose to do is put your phone in a bag of rice it is suppose to dry it out

Rice it up. With battery. All moisture needs to go bye bye. Though its probably to late, you should have left it off until you were 100% sure it was dry. Doesn't hurt to keep trying.
Edit: To anyone that hasn't done this yet. Unless you make enough money to wipe you [email protected] with $100 bills, don't take a [email protected] with phone in your hands.

If there was pee in the toilet you might get corrosion issues soon... if it was just water than drying it out should be fine.

I dried it with some toilet paper, and then used some alcohol to clean it up. Luckily the toilet was clean (only water). I also used a hair dryer (which I later read was a bad idea because heat might damage it).
I didn't use rice, but I was almost pretty sure it dried the next day.
BTW, I was listening to music while taking a shower... it's just that the bathroom is small and I was carrying some other stuff. unlucky...
Now it's showing the At&t sign and a couple of signal bars but still not making calls. I'll try to flash a new ROM, just in case..

buy a replacement OEM battery off ebay or amazon for $20.
then send the phone back for warranty!
the water damage sticker is on the battery, dumb asses!!! (samsung not you)

ONLY WATER EH LOL SURE. jj hope it works out for you try the battery thing that would be awesome if they gave you a new one under your warranty

Yes I was thinking of doing exactly the same thing. The water damage label on the battery is red already so that need to be replaced but I see another one on the phone, which is still white.
BTW, I was able to make a call now! we'll see how it goes.
Honestly, I'm impressed by the build quality. The speakers still work great and the screen is perfect.

Actually there are two -- one on battery, and one on the phone itself beside the connectors.

EVERY time I take my phone in there I think it is going to happen to me because my bathroom is tiny and for some reason I have a habit of carrying my phone directly over the toilet haha. Sorry to hear that though, try the rice in a bag trick. That should soak up most of the moisture

since you let it sit over night you may have a permanant problem. next time though use the rice trick, or better yet, dismantle it imediately! and dry it with a hair dryer, but watch the heat levels! the cappy has convertional phillips screws and is rugged and easy to disassemble without breaking anything. one reason i love it. i appreciate the design.

We've used the rice method a couple times,(teenagers) with perfect results. Too late now I think tho. We've done rice AND some desicant packs, make sure you throw out the rice!! Make sure the unit and battery is completely submerged in the rice, cover and leave it for a couple days. Good luck.

Rice works all the time saved 1 ipod put in to a washing machine. 1 iphone dropped in toilet thanks the wife. When you do the rice put it in a bag the longer you leave it in the better.

try drying with rice or silica pellets. its a good way to remove moisture.

Went swimming with my phone

So I just decided to go swimming with my phone for about 5 minutes before I realized. so i'm wondering if there is anyway it can be fixed, I do not have a warranty. There is a business by me that has a sign out that says "electronic repair" I stopped in and he said he could take it apart, dry it out, and see what's wrong with it and if it can be fixed for $25.
My question is. Is it worth the $25. Or is it pretty much guaranteed to be garbage? Thank you all for Amy help you can give me!!! The phone is an sgs4g

I have a horror story for you...
One dark and rainy night... riding shotgun down dark, dangerous slippery roads... we stopped.
I got out of the car, in the rain, forgetting my phone was in my lap. It was not in a case, nor did it have a screen protector... My phone fell, face down, onto the wet concrete, then, proceeded to SLIDE down a small slope, into a 4 inch puddle. The phone was completely submereged for about a full second, before i snatched it up.
I was so upset! I went into the house, and took the battery cover off the phone. Then I took the battery out. There was a little moisture in the phone, in the form of a few droplets BEHIND the battery. The water-damage sticker did not change colors, or get wet. There was definately a little water in the phone.
I let the phone sit for about an hour, believing I had ruined it, after only having it for three days. I got up the courage (or stupidity) to mess with it, and see what damage had been done. I put the phone back together, and held the power button... AND IT TURNED RIGHT ON! I looked over the screen, and there wasn't a single scratch! My phone was still perfect! It was dropped face down on concrete, and submerged in fast-moving water, but came out totally fine! Still works perfectly!

yeah I was literally wearing my phone on my side for about 5 minutes fully in the water before I noticed, I know 25 dollars is a good deal but is it worth it or is it actually junk.

I think it's worth it considering that the worst that could happen is that you have to get a new phone. You could also try the fridge or a bowl of rice. I dropped my phone in the sink under running water and it did no damage.

Okay I got it to turn on now But all it does is go to the first galaxy s screen and then it restart so its stuck in a boot loop. anyone have any ideas how to get it to actually boot up.

Ok they said the mother board is all corroded on both sides, they tried cleaning it and couldn't get anything to work. They said its garbage.

I did try plugging it in to my computer and getting Odin to recognize it, but the same as its in a boot loop when trying to turn it on it does the same thing on the computer, I.e. when you plug the phone in to the computer, then you go into my computer you can watch the removable harddrive show up for a couple seconds then goes away and comes back and continues that loop.
Guess i'm just s.o.l.

Listen to that man right there.. Or for anyone who drops there phone in water.. Immediately when you drop your phone in water. First thing you want to do is take the battery out so you don't short the motherboard then drop it in rice for at least 24hours to get the moisture out.. Take my advice I deal with this most of my days working for a repair company for electronics

Happened to me many times. I went swimming at the beach for like 2 hours in. I was hanging out with some friends then I was like "Oh, I need to call my mom..." so while in the water I took my phone out from my pocket and everyone laughed. It was a Razor and of course it couldn't be repaired.
Another anecdote... I was in a beach resort with my family. I was resting, I said no beach for me so when I woke up everyone was down at the beach but me. I decided to put on some short jeans, nice shirt, shoes... I was dressed up not for the beach with my phone and wallet in my pockets. I went there, sat down with my mom and a friend of her when suddenly they start screaming that there was a little kid drowning. I started running toward the beach looking for the kid and I just went into the water, swam, got the kid, pushed his stomach to get him to puke the water and returned him to his parents. Just so you know, I received no thanks from them. Nothing. Believe me. When I sat down, my family and friends and random people were coming by me to say that I was a hero and thanks and congrats and stuff like that. Everyone seemed glad but me. I realized I got my phone and again it got f'ed up. Next week, dad got me the SGS4G phone and still rocking it for 16 months.
I fear summer is coming and beach is there waiting for my phone. LOL So maybe in June or July I will get a newer phone. LOL
Anyway, you should give the 25$ to the repair store. The worst that could happen is that you need to buy another phone. So take the risk. Also, follow the tips you have gotten from here. Put in on rice, some minutes in the sun, your mom, sister or gf's blower and you may have a functional phone soon. Hope you do. Only thing I have noticed is that you haven't mention which type of water were you swiming in? Pool with Clorox or something... and beach are no good but regular water I think it's no big deal. You just need it to be dry.

Stupid, yet surprised.

So, the other night.. I threw my phone as hard as I could...And it hit a metal pole about 6-8 feet in front of me. It had a cheap case on it. That flew about 20 feet and landed on my roof. I will provide a link. I should have taken a pic of the back of the phone... It put a crack in the top area of the battery cover. A little below the camera area...And the only issue was I had to push the back cover down after removing the back. I ordered a new one, no problem.

Well, most of you are at least partially correct.
I have really bad insomnia. I had been up for 6 days and some family issues...
And female issues.
I don't often get mad/angry/annoyed/etc. It had been over a year, (Yes, really.)
Being up for 6 days and all the drama (I keep myself away from drama as much as possible.)
I just snapped... Threw the phone. I did like the case. I ordered an Otter Box. Phone feels way to thin without a case, haha.

Did throwing your phone make you feel better at all? Was it worth it?

[Q] Phone swam, how long do I leave it in rice?

I accidentaly dropped my one x on a bucket full of water and it was in it for around 2 seconds (it took me that long to realize what had happened and snap out of shock). Luckily it had an aftermarket dual layer case that protects the usb port and headphone jack. I quickly pulled it out but noticed it was still on and touchscreen worked fine. I then proceeded to remove the case, dry it with my shirt, turn it off and burry it in a bag full of rice. Its been in it for about 7 hours now, and as I read around the internet all I found was ppl whose electronics (mostly ipods) had been underwater for waaaaay longer, so I dont have like an exact time to wait cuz I dont know how long I should leave it there. This is the first time ever I have dropped a phone (or any electronic besides headphones) on water so Im kinda unclear about things here, so any suggestion is appreciated! Thanks in advanced!

Unless u find moisture beneath the screen, no water has seeped through and you are good to go. U needen't have put it in water either..

When I got mine wet (got caught in a storm when out running) I left it in the bag of rice on a radiator for 24 hours. It was perfect when it came out, but I was probably just being paranoid.

Well my main reason for putting it in rice was cause I was worried about the headphone jack, usb/charging port, mic and speakers. I know the last thing I should do is put it to charge after its been drowned in water and my battery was low so I said what the hell n put it in the rice. So by now would it be dry enough to put it to charge and test mic, speakers and headphone jack? Or should I leave it a bit longer? Btw thanks for ur quick replies!

It can't hurt o leave it longer, it CAN hurt to take it out too soon, so.... I'd certainly err on the side of caution....

thanks for all the replies everyone! the phone fell in the water around 9pm so im gonna give it till 12 midnight today just to be safe, 27 hours should be enough lol... hopefully everything is still working fine!!

hell i thought i had posted its alive!!!! the first few hours the housing made some wierd sounds whenever i held it tight and let it go and the power button had to be pressed on the edges cause on the middle it didnt work, so it was kinda hard to press.. but today it seemed to fix itself as its not making anymore sounds and the power button is completely functional! i wanna thank everyone for replying and caring about my phone's water lessons gone wrong xD and yeeeyaaah i get to enjoy jb for a bit longer

Cheers! I watched a torture test for the one x, and it seemed to hold up pretty well in water. Apparently, that holds true! My gfs iPhone 4s took a swim and drowned. She said the phone hit the water and the screen turned off immediately, never to turn back on.

damn, they seemed to fix that with the 5 though, a friend's iphone 5 fell on his fish tank for about 15 seconds (he said) and he didnt put it in rice or anything and it was working fine when i used it but as for my one x, im gonna keep it in the case just in case xD but i can sure confirm its resistant to water after the incident!

Yeah, if you watch, Always On with Molly Wood water torture test for the iPhone 4s or iPhone 5, they looked water proof enough to take pictures while scuba diving. However, back here in reality.....

My HTC Aria took a tumble in a front loading washer for 45 minutes once. When I pulled it out the screen was still on. Granted, it died 5 minutes later...

I know its a moot point, and the OP is already using the phone again, but just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents for the benefit (or not) of others:
There doesn't seem to be a silver bullet to how long to dry the device, whether it will still work, etc. It all seems to be luck of the draw.
The fact the phone was only submerged a couple seconds likely is a big factor. Even though nearly all phones are not designed to be waterproof, they are closed up fairly tight. So it takes some time for water to penetrate the casing, and the more water that gets in, the more likely it will get in some area where it will cause a short. So the less time under water, the better.
If it were me, I'd leave the phone in rice for a couple days (I always have at least one older backup device for situations like this, or otherwise breaking or losing a phone). Particularly for devices that are difficult to open up, its going to take a long time for moisture to evaporate and be absorbed by the rice. Small amounts of water will evaporate pretty easily in a couple hours, if fully exposed to the air. But enclosed inside a plastic casing . . . not so much. Even surrounded by rice and with some mild heat, I'd still put the dry time in days, not hours.
And in the end, its really just a crap shoot on whether the device will even work or not (or work partially). My wife dropped her iPhone 5 in the toilet for just a second or 2, some time before Christmas. She did power it off, but did not put it in rice (was at work, and didn't really have access). She made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the local Apple store. They took the phone apart (didn't even know they did that there) and cleaned it up best they could. They told my wife there was no rhyme or reason on whether it will work, or for how long. But my wife powered the phone on that same day, and has been using it ever since, and it seems perfectly ok.

The T-mobile one came without a water sticker. But after sending for repair, they put like 15532550563 stickers on. I would just contact the seller.

I was in the bathtub about 6 months ago and I fell asleep and dropped my One-S in the water. I awoke pretty quickly and sat up frantically searching for my phone. I found it because the display screen illuminated most of the water as it sat submerged.
I grabbed the phone, powered it down, opened the top backplate and hand dried the SIM card and anything else I could.
I was going to leave it to try overnight, but the thought of seeing it lit up underwater made me turn it on after 2 hours. It has worked fine ever since.

Last time i did that with my old phone and didnt work even though it work for my friend, so i had to get a new phone and so far i am happy my old phone got wet because i LOVE my HTC one s

I tend to attribute it to the high quality HTC craftsmanship.
However, as much as I have been an exclusive HTC owner since the Nexus One, I think I will probably go with Samsung next (or next year's Nexus). HTC, with their capitulation to TMO in preventing S=off and other annoying things HTC has been doing as of late is forcing me to reconsider my loyalty.

It isnt as black and white as it seems, it depends what gets moist inside. One person drops it into bathtub and it still works, i had the phone quite moist all over(because of condensate) it and a month later i had to change motherboard which cost 190€

My water indicator sits between the two contracts just above and to the right of the camera, but from your photo's angle it wouldn't be visible because it's below them in the recess they're sitting in.

don't know about water damage but 2 things:
1) this phones blue plastic design is abit different than my S4 one s.
2) the IMEI is shown for the public as you see and i wouldn't buy phone with IMEI visible in the picture.

Depends on price. If low enough, with the risk. Agree with other poster re: surviving water with this (and other) HTC model. Solid piece of hardware.
