Reno NV has LTE - Thunderbolt General

Around 2:00pm today it turned on! Had no clue it was coming already.

Yup, noticed it this morning. 3G signal dropped, and I saw the 4G LTE logo appear!
Did some speed tests, and the highest I got to was 30 Mbps down. May be a fluke, but still pretty cool to see. Avg speeds ranged around 12-15 Mbps down.

Awesome. I'll have to let my buddies known
!!what a sensation!!

I have been getting around 9-12 down speeds but I am pretty far put of town.

Carson City and Dayton NV with 4G too!!
Yep, I noticed the 4G appear on Friday too. I work in Carson City and was pulling down between 12-14MBps on 4G there. Then I went home to Dayton, and to my surprise the 4G works here too. I am not sure how many or where Verizon put the towers, but they did a good job and are covering a BIG area.

Dayton? Damn

I realize this thread is a month or so old now but interested in some input from fellow local T-bolt users now that we've been live for a few months.
So far my 4G has been pretty good, I've noticed 4G as far as Fallon!(I drive quite often due to my current occupation) But for some reason I drop it every time I cross W Mccarrin by 7th, unless I'm on I80 sometimes headed west. Here I go to rub VZW 4G in my AT&T buddies face, low and behold I pull my phone out and it's in 3G lol. It seems random in the northwest area, can anyone else confirm this?
Not sure if this is due to my radio, or running cm7...some days it's great all day long with exceptional speeds and others it just blows, drops in and out all day long.

It's been on since around September 15th; yesterday it was out in the morning, but came back around noon.
Speeds vary wildly (especially with SpeedTest.net), depends on where you are at the moment, and the phase of the moon

I've noticed speed variances with the apps badly, I get a more solid reoccuring speed if I use the browser speed test method.
But yes, yesterday was a fairly bad service day I noticed. I get good travel throughout Reno and Sparks so I try to take notice to good vs. bad service areas.
Anyone know how many antennas vzw put up in the area? Did a brief search coming up without much...

It's not how many new antennas as for retrofitting existing ones, plus the hardware hand-off 1x-3g-4g, since 4g is basically the older analog TV band being re-purposed. 4g penetrates structures better than the higher frequency 3g.
---------- Post added at 04:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:44 PM ----------
I should also add that it depends on where the antenna is located and how (the back cover on the phone, and whether it's seated properly), how "tuned" the chips are inside the phone (put two T-Bolts side-by-side & compare dBm values - available with some custom ROMs, or use OpenSignalMaps), what radio versions you're using (for me the 817 CDMA paired with the 803 LTE has worked the best so far; the 906 radios just ate the battery "hunting" all the time; still waiting to hear about the latest version - not so good from what I hear so far). All-in-all, each phone has its own favorite ROM/Radio combo that works for it.

That means verizon is testing 4g in ur area and it should be live soon
Dang it I missed it!!
They have turned it on once before for a few min about a month so maybe we are getting close to having the switch flipped on in gville/sptbg area! I hate that I missed it this time!
I am near downtown greenville and it came on for about a few min and went out got a chance to do a speed test I was getting 6 to 10mbps down was not getting upload
Also I been noticing 3g going down to 1x and back up to 3g for the past week anyone else had this happen?

oooooh. Maybe if Greenville is close then Charleston is right there with them. I should start turning on 4g to see if it works
I thought you meant Greenville, NC... damn.
Coming soon to a greenville / spartanburg place near you! YES!
I read an article on google that stated verizon's 4g will hit surrounding areas when greenville, sc receives 4g, including clemson university. With that being said, i have noticed an increase in 3g/1x fluctuations this and last week as well.
I don't see why they didn't include Anderson in the list I saw. I saw mauldiin simpsonville easley fountain inn and some more suburbs in greenville. Heck if they added Anderson they would have most of the upstate market. Tonight I been noticing a lot of 3G drops outs

It Looks like the Greenville/Spartanburg area is getting 4G on the 16th of June Verizon Wireless Twitted it along with 21 new market areas!
Are you sure Greenville/Spartanburg was on the list?? I didn't see it on Android Central's list for the 16th a couple days ago.
I hope, I hope you're right!!
Your Right!! I hadn't seen the latest!! Thanks for making my day!! HAHAHA
I'm in Travelers Rest/Furman area, wonder if the 4G will stretch to me? i'm only 15 min to downtown.
I live in Easley and I really hope it reaches out there because I will get rid of my DSL through AT&T.
Come on Boiling Springs!!

It's also on verizon wireless news Center http://news.vzw.com/news/2011/05/pr2011-05-20g.html
Also these surrounding areas i would picture Travelers Rest and Easley will be in there since Central SC which is WAY smaller than Easley is also gonna be Covered because these towns are part of the Greenville Metro statistical area (aka Suburbs) but here is what they posted on thier News Center
The deployment of Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE in Greenville-Spartanburg also provides LTE coverage throughout the surrounding areas of Clemson, Simpsonville, Fountain Inn, Greer, Taylors, Inman, Central, Liberty (Which i will think this will include Easley since is along HWY 123 and in Pickens County just adding my guessing in), Mauldin, Wellford, Inman, Berea, Lyman, Startex, Roebuck, and White Stone.
With all these Cities and surroundings that Pretty much covers the Whole Upstate at least around the I-85 Corridor of South Carolina just needs to get to Gaffney and Anderson area's this is like a huge LTE cut on
I was connected to 4g for a few hours early this morning in Mauldin before it went back off.
zolazar - i live in easley too. small world.

How well is the LTE working?

I am a launch day EVO 4G user and a Sprint subscriber since 1999. With the new EVO 3D 4G coming out, I am at a crossroads. I am miffed not being in a Sprint 4G area while my friends with their Tbolts are rocking it here. Even my sister with her Tmobile MyTouch 4g is getting "4G" here. But, that EVO 3D is beckoning for my technolust.
Those of you with Tbolts and in an official LTE area, how well does the network work when you are moving? How well does the network handle handoffs? Is LTE useable when in a moving car?
Thanks for any input. I am seeking as much input as possible to make a consumer decision. This is not a trolling attempt and I hope no trolls attempt. I just need info.
All of that works amazing for me here in Phoenix. Almost all of the valley is covered in 4g and I get it pretty much anywhere. Works great while moving, handoffs seem to work fine.
In Columbus, OH and it is a LTE market - these days it seems they have worked out most of the kinks. Battery life is horrendous using the 4G radio - if you get the phone and have access to a WiFi AP for most of the day, use that over 4G. I mainly stay in Columbus and the 4G coverage area is rather large, I've not had problems with moving quickly and downloading anything, although I'd wonder what would happen if you wanted to use it as a carpool mobile hotspot, how stable it is in that situation I'm not sure. All and all I'm happy with the phone - and it seems Verizon is over their growing pains in the network.
4G works well when moving. I am able to make Skype Video calls while driving, and the video is clear, but not too smooth (Skype Mobile might be limiting the frame rate to 15fps). There are some data handoff issues when moving from a 4G area to a 3G area, resulting in music streams getting cut off. Most apps, when their data stream is cut off, do not intelligently reconnect, and make you have to restart the stream manually.
Initializing 4G is also not speedy. Driving out of a no-signal zone means waiting a good minute or two, as the phone goes from "no service" to "1x" to "4g". I've noticed that if you get impatient (or are just not paying attention) and invoke a data stream on "1x", the phone will not switch to "4g" until the data stream ends. This delay depends on the phone's hardware, obviously.
Also, your bandwidth varies sharply with location. The difference between New York City (2-4Mbps), Dallas (12-15Mbps), and San Francisco (3-6Mbps) is startling.
Hope this helps you.

Handoffs are the greatest, but overall a very pleasurable experience. I get about 8-12 down and a pretty consistent 2 up in charlotte. If you are in a good lte area, moving is not that bad. I use it to stream tv from my vulkano while moving and never really have a problem. Overall I'm happy. The only thing that I have a real issue with is GPS. Which I just got off the phone with verizon about.
Hmmm, lots of you are getting better speeds than I am seeing.
I get good coverage here in the NW Chicago burbs, but I'm only seeing 5-6 mbps down and 2-3 up. It's fast enough for my uses, but now I'm wondering why I'm not getting faster speeds....

Dual core snapdragon, rumour has it capable of significant overclocking or better battery life. Better display, higher resolution. And yes, 3D. Hands on reviews indicate cool factor. I am geek.
I would not come over

hold off buying the EVO 3D until the V gets its version. Then I will switch networks.

Building penetration with Verizon LTE! I can stream YouTube HD in the crapper at work which is smack center of the building. When I canceled Sprint the other day they wanted me to stand out on the streets to get 4G coverage. Been a Sprint customer for over a decade but no more.
Verizon may drop the unlimited phone data so you may want to grandfather in sooner than later.
3D is a gimmick. I would give priority to LTE, SAMOLED+, dual core, etc. over that.
I live in Charlotte NC & I'll never go back to 3G. The difference is astounding

I just wanted to see if its just the service in my area or maybe I'm u using the wrong radio and ril on my phone, but I seem to get god awful dl/ul speeds on my phone even though it claims to be on h+/4g when I run tests or just I use the phone to surf. Guess what I'm asking is what are the speeds you guys/girls are getting, both up and down, in and around the new orleans area? At around 3 or 4 am ill get 3Mb down 1 up. On a daily basis though I see dl speeds of less than 1Mb and 150-250kbps up. speeds
I am down here in Thibodaux and when doing a speed test it is showing a server out of New Orleans. I am pulling download at appox. 2.25Mbps and Upload at appox 1.15Mbps. This is with the upgrade and I am not rooted sitting in my kitchen....I can get a little better when driving around the area...I will be your area later today and will run another.
I have the same issue in Florida. It's ATT imo. The phone has H+ but is running on hsdpa. That's 7.7 mbps 3G. Enhanced backhaul my ass. I contacted ATT corporate and will be waiting for a response.
North Louisiana Shreveport area, same very slow dl/ul running radio 4.11_m2 matching Ril. I agree it's ATT, My wife's new one is the same way.
In New Orleans now and I get about the same as I do in Thibodaux. My phone is not rooted.

Bossier City Area
My speeds are very similar to yours...
I get about 1 down at BEST... and I struggle to get that.
I've gotten up speeds of 150-300 the majority of the time but have seen this spike to 1Mb inconsistently with some radios.
I'm on Coredroid. My most consistent results are using the AT&T OTA radio from April 29th.

Anyone else noticing HTCs losing 3G/4G speeds?

I sell vzw for a franchise/premium retailer and I have noticed on my phone first and then on everyone I know/see that has htc's I've noticed that even down to the incredible, incredible 2, and of course the thunderbolt. I honestly haven't checked the rezound but plan to if someone buys one or I have time to test it.
Basically 4G only gets under 4 mbps and 3G phones only get 3 mbps and under. Sometimes averaging around 1 mbps.
According to HTC its a network issue. I said,"how could it be a network issue if the other 4G phones like the Motorola's more specificly like the bionic I have next to my thunderbolt is running 14-18 mbps!"
Verizon says its not a network issue and I was right it is pretty obvious. They said it's a phone issue and it's the first they've heard of it.
I personally believe it has something to do with the back cover antenna. And I also can't help noticing how cheap they are and how they seem to be trying to get rid of more lately. Yes it can very well be because its almost a year that its been out and I'm sure there's somewhere I'm not looking where it shows its planned life time.
I just want to make sure there isn't a software issue going on here or if its a hardware/"dare I say it, defect" with these phones.
Now I will say I have this verified by people I know that travel through and/to Pittsburgh for school and work. It does appear that with more towers downtown u do get a lot of signal bombarding ur phone and they pull about 8mbps. Bionic was going 14-18 mbps all over my area and would imagine it stays strong in the city too.
I'm running cm7 and I got friends running all kinds of roms for there thunderbolts all same results and unrooted users/store phone sent straight from htc/random traffic in the store all get the same bad results. Hope this helps and comments are a must please.

LTE 4G Rezound
I had my TB since March of this year, and I didn't have 4G to pick up until they expanded here. While my phone would originally pick up 4G, it stopped picking it up unless the signal was very strong, like in a Verizon store where they have the repeaters. My wife's TB would pick up 4G if it was anywhere around, and would smoke my phone for data speeds every time. I had changed the SIM card, which had no noticeable effect, and finally sent it back under warranty and got a replacement. Of course, I had to unroot and restore to stock, but my replacement is as good as it should have been all along.
To the OP, It may be a situation where you have some HTC phones that have poor signal issues like mine had. My original TB could have had the issue all along, but I was not aware because of how well the phone handled everything else, and the fact that it DID pick up 4G, just not very well.
---------- Post added at 06:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:18 AM ----------
Oh, to add to this, my old TB would only get data speeds averaging 4-5 MB/s down with 4G, and my wife's would get 17-26 MB/s side by side. My replacement gets 15-17 MB/s down and 8-10 MB/s up with the 906 radio. Wife's radio is 508/510 combo, I believe.

Two things I've noticed on my phone.....one is all gingerbread roms with any radio i have tried slow my speed way down except the latest shiftao5p, its decent with it. With gingerbread roms i only get about 3-5 mbps but with any froyo rom including the very first build i get at least 15mbps.
Secondly, i bought a cheap extended battery off eBay and the cheap battery cover has a cheap antenna in it. It wouldn't pick up 4g most of the time. I put a small piece of aluminum foil on the antenna prongs and put the cover back on and that helped, it would at least pick up 4g after that. With the seidio battey and cover it picks up great. So watch hose cheap extended battery covers.
The speedtest app everyone's been using seems to have inadequate test servers. I routinely get ~15Mb/s from them. Using http://speakeasy.net/speedtest, I frequently see TWICE the speed. Let me upload some screenshots from my phone. Not sure if there's "proof" that it's from my phone though, but rest assured, it is. My home 'net speed is 6Mb/s so it ain't from that connection !!

FWIW, the 33Mb/s is the highest I've ever seen myself.
Yes, in fact just last week I got a Certified Like New replacement for my TBolt for this very problem. It was resolved immediately with the new device.
I had tried replacing sim card, replacing back door, replacing battery, flashing various roms and radios, and a full restore to stock with s-on; nothing worked for the defective device.
My 4g speed degraded gradually over a period of a few weeks and became dramatically worse and practically unusable in a span of a few days at the end of it.
When I got my CLN, I had both the replacement and my original unit side by side in the same spot in my house and ran speedtest on the same server using 4g, same sim card, same rom (Stock GB MR), same radio, no SD card, no installed apps.
The difference was black and white, the original was total **** (several times failing to even complete the test due to "network issues") and the replacement was hitting ~25Mbps down.
Long story short, the TB 4g hardware can spontaneously start to fail. It's for that reason I'm contemplating getting insurance once my mfg warranty wears out. I love the character of this phone but I think some of the engineering behind it might be third rate.

Oh, how the times have changed that we are complaining about 26mbps... lol jk
Chicago is a pretty big city so I assume there are others using AT&T LTE. I know where I live (in the middle of nowhere) I get 56mbps because there is literally no one else around me with an LTE capable phone on AT&T.
So it might just have to do with the amount of people using AT&T's network in Chicago. But anyway, yeah it would be good to see other people's speeds from that area.
I for one am dreading the LTE iPhone....
I'm from the suburbs just north of Chicago. Out here I get anywhere from 15-32 mbps (though at my house I only get around 6-8) and in the city I usually get around 10. Sure beats my iPhone on HSPA+ where I couldn't even check my email. AT&T's network sucks in the city. They have good coverage but their backhaul really needs an upgrade.

Change the server you are testing with, it isn't your phone that is slow, it is the server you are testing with and how much traffic is on the network when testing. Test at 2-4am on a weekday and your speed will probably nearly double. LTE is theoretically capable of 105mbps/down.

Your phone is fine, enjoy it.

This. This, all of this...except that I'm not from the suburbs. But I've experienced and agree with all points. If the iPhone goes to LTE I'm going to move to Canada.

Wonder if this guy moved to Canada lol?
Seriously, anyone here with an unlocked One X on Tmobile? Were you fortunate enough to be one of the lucky ones to grab 3G/4G speed on Tmobile's network with the One X?
I'm at a crossroad debating if I should trade my unlocked Atrix HD for the One X. Currently I'm getting 9-15MB down/3-7MB up speeds with the Atrix on Tmobile. Would hate to give up this speed & be trapped on Edge again

HA, still here, eating my words. Though the NHL lockout may drive me north to find some good hockey...
But seriously, since the iPhone dropped, i have seen a little decrease in speeds in teh area, though admittedly far less than I anticipated. I live in the city, around Wicker Park/Logan Square/Bucktown, which is hipster-effing-heaven. iPhones border on the official currency around here. Yet, still seeing nearly the same speeds in my area that I did before. In my home, i pull around 11up/11down. but around the neighborhood, I still see speeds range from 10 to over 25mbps up, and almost never below 10 down. I work in the loop, where I can get 15down on the street during a busy workday afternoon. and I even pull 5down on the 24th floor of my 1960's iron-and-concrete fortress office building.
These are all observations i've been making since the iphone 5 came. But when these range a lot. ATT does need to bump it's backhaul a bit. The difference between day and night speeds is, well, day and night. This is to be expected, but you'd like to see that gap close a bit.
As for your question regarding the Atrix HD to One X switch, i wish I could help more. I haven't been following where the One X has gone in terms of connectivity to T-Mo, but I'd be confident that you'd be happy with the HOX over the AtrixHD in terms of it's functionality. I'm sure the MetroPCS merger is going to substantially boost the usefulness of the HOX on TMo, but when that is in effect, I am unsure. Have you done any searches around these forums yet? I know there has been a lot of discussion about this in the past...
