hi all
i have an asus transformer..is it really multitasking?
as far as im concern the stock browser only capable of 1 tab at a moment. say for example on one tab i play youtube video, then when i open another tab,the youtube video just stop. is there any way to make it really running in background?
Use opera mobile, The stock browser sucks
On the stock browser they disabled flash when switched to another tab. Here's an example of multitasking; start a page loading then switch tabs. Wait a while and go back to the first tab. Did it finish loading?
Android multitasking is really just keeping the app stationary and open in the background until you recall it again. It isn't like Windows where you minimize a window with a video playing and the video keeps playing. Just doesn't have that kind of power.

Sometimes whilst surfing the net i like to listen to Youtube while using another webpage to surf at the same time, trying to do this on my Asus but it shuts down the sound immediatley.
Is there a workaround available for me to listen to Youtube while surfing?
I assume you're using the stock broswer, and switching tabs? That's weird - and unfortunate - behaviour, as I like to do the same thing (though I haven't got my Transformer just yet).
Did you try maybe using the youtube app while browsing with the browser? It probably won't work, but it is worth a shot.
I don't have my TF in front of me, but did you try using youtube in browser instead of the app? I know the app sound shuts off, but its worth a try.
Yeah i've tried both ways and also tried using Firefox and Dolphin browsers but they all cut the sound out when you open up another tab.
Hasn't anybody else experienced this?
I have. I watch a lot of Flash live streaming (StarCraft 2 live streams), and every time I want to check IRC, I have to close the browser, which causes the Flash process to freeze. The same thing applies to the YouTube app. This is by design, and I cannot think of any way to fix it.
Really unfortunate, tbh.

Yes, i have as well. The tablet doesn't do true multitasking as would a desktop pc. You can't have two tabs open that are actually streaming information at the same time.
I like to play music from one tab and work in another just like you, and the TF won't do this. It's like with the ipad or iphone, they don't actually multitask, they sort of freeze your apps until you open them again.
yea. noticed that yesterday...
sucks.
opened youtube to listen to a song, opened a second tab for guitartabs..
when i switched to the tabs..sound muted.
wtf transformer. transform your ass into a good buy..lol

I don't believe its a transformer thing, thats Honeycomb.
Well if pandora can stream music in he background it is the apps doing. The developer designed the app that way so the app will not eat the batt and the cpu cycles when left open.
Otherwise a user would need to remember to close youtube correctly with an exit button or suffer a dead batt or slow tab.

As previously mentioned, this is by design. I don't think that will change. These devices are meant to conserve power while giving good performance. Why waste it decoding video when it is not being watched? The device does do true multitasking so a browser of this nature is certainly possible. Music will play in the background just not video.
The flash layer hibernates when it's no longer in the foreground. It's by design.

Ya, its battery management.
Ask in dev forum if someone can make an app to play youtube in background.
There is a post in the Xoom forums where is works with a particular browser and HC 3.1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13916886&postcount=68
I was streaming the "This is my Next Podcast" in a browser tab (Dolphin Browser HD) switching between tabs and apps with no problems yesterday. Maybe it's a settings issue, though I never made any significant changes so I don't know what it would be. I do use a desktop user agent... hmm, I'll try it again to make sure it wasn't an anomoly.

Yep, doing it right now. Running .13 w/ Dolphin HD Browser.

It must just depend on the player, some flash content may just be a no go.

Skype works
I can confirm that xformer can multi-task no problem, but seems to be dependent on the app. E.g. Skype works fine. I can have a video call going in the background, the other party can see me and we can keep talking, while I can go to home screen, fire up the browser and start surfing. Does not work for Youtube. via the app or the browser's built-in. In fact the browser (built-in) itself seems incapable, i.e. anything running on the browser shuts down, if the task is switched away. This also applies to tabs, i.e. if I fire up two tabs at the same time loading content, only the tab on focus continues to load, while the other ones go on a "paused" state. I haven't checked with Opera Mobile (flash is dead slow on any browser other than the built-in one), so I hardly use Opera Mobile.
I think pandora works in the bg as well. But I wasn't able to get the music player going on the background. I haven't tried Amazon mp3 player in the bg yet.
My2c.
Ok coming from the 2007 HTC Tmobile Shadow which was a Windows Mobile 6 device that could browse the web, while at the same time stream audio and video in the background, also play video games such as duke nukem and quake and could be modified with tons of ROMs and tweaks all the while keeping a charge for 3 days, I was sorely disappointed when I finally upgraded and got the G2x superphone with the Android operating system.
This being my first touch screen android, I expected this to do all what the Shadow could do and more. Ok granted I'm still learning this device what initially disappointed me was the miserable battery life that would last at most 3 and a half to 4 hours with continous use such as web browsing and watching videos, listening to music and playing videogames.
Then about two weeks playing with the phone I found it couldn't multitask, sort of, since I could listen to audio and video while browsing on the Shadow, but with the G2x I tried streaming audio/video from one window then opened another and tried surfing the web with the stock browser along with Dolphin, Skyfire, and other "high profile" 3rd party browsers, but the audio/video on the first window would stop.
Fast forward to today, I read an article on Opera Mini 6 from a magazine called "Android" I believe, and to my surprise they were raving about this browser that seemed outdated compared to the others I just mentioned above, but it made me think about my Shadow and how I used the Opera Mini 4 browser as the default internet browser.
I thought how much I loved that browser because it was so fast even on 2G, although it couldn't do flash videos, it still could play the videos on mobile sites with the right media player.
Now having experimented with the other "high profile" browsers I mentioned and how great it brings the "desktop" experience to a cellphone minus the multitasking, those browsers required the extra processing power and battery juice of 4G to appreciate in all it's glory.
Aha! This hit me and I thought, "ok this new modern device of a superphone with the new Android OS, does indeed do all that the 4 year old Shadow could do and does it better, but battery technology has been lagging, so let me try and duplicate what I had on my Shadow and once again try the Opera Mini browser, even though it doesn't support flash videos, it does render the page on their servers and opens lightning fast on 2G, this benefits alot because not only can you disable 4G, you also use less data which is good if you have limited plan or don't want them to down throttle your data if you go over, and the most important thing of all is that since the browser is FAST on 2G, disabling 4G extends your battery by 4 times as much if you had it on!"
So having downloaded and installed Opera Mini free from the market, I had a more enthusiastic outlook for this browser than I did when I tried it when I first got the phone. I actually tried the multitasking were I open a video/audio let it play in the background and then browse. I'm happy to report that it does exactly how I was doing on the Shadow, since Opera Mini downloads the video or audio file letting you play it on the music or video player then you can go back to the browser and surf while the media still plays in the background! Awesome. Even though it's not as flashy as the stock or Dolphin browsers, it get's the job done and saves huge amounts of battery while still look good and did I mention FAST.
Now if you want to watch videos then you can turn 4G back on and use the Youtube app or stock browser if you don't mind draining the battery. Me, I'm now using the Opera Mini browser as default since most of my internet browsing is reading articles or going on forums which mainly consist of text and pictures which Opera excels at without using 4G. So I have the use 2G only option enabled in my network settings and I downloaded 2g/3g on/off widget from the market for free to switch quickly if I wanted to use 4G.
I also disabled background data in my sync options to conserve even more battery life, since I noticed the only app that uses it on my stock G2x is the android market. If I wanted to use the market I just reenable it.
Besides Juicedefender free my last weapon to combat excessive battery drain is Auto airplane mode also free from the market. I enable auto airplane mode when I'm at work, since I'm not allowed to receive calls nor use my phone, and this is the strongest so far as it kills the cell standby radio which is the number 1 culprit of battery bleed when not using the phone at all.
The question I hear yall asking is, "so did this give you 3 days of battery life on a single charge?" Try it and find out for yourselves
I can view anything at or above 360p from YouTube via default or dolphin browser?
The default YouTube app sucks dong cuz it buffers forever and I can't change quality of video...
If anyone know why I can't choose 360p in browser please let me know.
In the YouTube app there is HD button to switch between SD HD.
If you visit the desktop version of YouTube on the xoom you will have the same options as you would on your computer.
If you don't know how to do that search for about:debug ua string.

I am running desktop UA but YouTube would not play anything above 360p in browser.
Is it only me?
I prefer YouTube in browser than the dumb app.
Same issue here, seems to have just started a couple of days ago as it worked fine before when watching 720p in the browser. Now no videos work in pluse, stock browser or dolphin. Just get "an error, try back later". So then I click to go to the YouTube page for the video and still does not work. The only way to work is to swtich the ua string to android, I use the dolphin toggle extension but it is very annoying to have to do this all the time, I don't want to view mobile site on my tablet. Wtf is Google doing this, why block tablets from seeing HQ video, the main differentiation between their offerings and the ipad.
My guess, something to do with copyright. I personally think that its stupid to block mobile video in the first place.
I have had no issues. 720p plays in browser. Check your settings for playback on the YouTube site. If that don't work. Clear data for browser. That will loose all your bookmarks etc though.

Got the same problems myself now.

I have no problems with it either way. If its android it just loads the mobile then I click on open desktop site. When on desktop it just goes right to desktop of course. No issues.
Cant watch any videos on the desktop site now.

You should be able to watch 240p
You're right, but that sucks.
Are you guys having the problem with stock Adobe Flash or only the modified version of Adobe Flash for hulu.com support?

Youtube doesn't even play for me with the flash from manta rom...
I have the modified hulu version.
am also using modified hulu version....
In my version of the hulu flash, all I modified was the version number and from Android to Windows so unless youtube now actually verifies the version number along with the version type, that may be the reason. There is a new version of Adobe Flash released yesterday, I will modify it as usual and will report the results here since I can't do much with hex editing as that is the only known hack.

can you post please because I would like to watch YT on my xoom again.
If you all are still having troubles with your Youtube on the Stock Browser, Dolphin, Opera, or Firefox, can you please give me some more details on your settings?
When you say "Desktop Browser" are you refering to www.youtube.com and forcing it to stay that way or is it going to www.youtube.com and then changing to the mobile version, m.youtube.com?
(Only Stock Browser) Have you done the "Aboutebug" (Without quotes) mode and change your browser to LOOK like a desktop UI?
~~If you are using the "Aboutebug" Mode, are you running on Wi-Fi only or are you running 3g?
(Dolphin/Opera Browsers only) Have you gone in and changed the settings to make it look like a Desktop Browser or are you still allowing it to display as a Android Device?
When the videos do work, have you tried to clear your Cache and History to keep the information in the buffer low when you are just getting ready to watch videos/just after you are done watching videos? (I ask because I noticed on my Wi-Fi Stock Rooted Rom that if you do not use the Youtube App, it bogs down the Cache and the History just gets cluttered...)
Are you making sure there are not other applications running too and choking out the Browser UI's? (aka, getting a task manager and killing apps before you go into another app)
I hope to help you out, as well as others in the near future (be it advice or with the same problem) and get this problem resolved!
Thank You for the information in advance! ^_^
Sure,
When you say "Desktop Browser" are you refering to www.youtube.com and forcing it to stay that way or is it going to www.youtube.com and then changing to the mobile version, m.youtube.com?
=> No, I'm using desktop UA string so it is always www.youtube.com. I have to manually go to m.youtube.com.
(Only Stock Browser) Have you done the "Aboutebug" (Without quotes) mode and change your browser to LOOK like a desktop UI?
~~If you are using the "Aboutebug" Mode, are you running on Wi-Fi only or are you running 3g?
=> I have WIFI xoom so WIFI only.
(Dolphin/Opera Browsers only) Have you gone in and changed the settings to make it look like a Desktop Browser or are you still allowing it to display as a Android Device?
=> Yes, I am using desktop UA in dolphin as well. I don't see why using mobile UA on the tablet is usefull at all.
=> Videos ONLY WORK for me at 260p....doesn't matter whether I clear cache or history.
Are you making sure there are not other applications running too and choking out the Browser UI's? (aka, getting a task manager and killing apps before you go into another app)
=> Yes, rebooted and only running browser...tried many many times.
I'm not very technologically inclined but I have almost given up and decided to ask the experts:
I have a Palm Treo Pro with Windows Mobile 6.1 in which I have used Opera Mobile 10 since I got it. I have also had Flash Lite since the beginning and it has worked perfectly, I could visit Youtube and a grey box with a play button in the center would allow me to play the videos directly in the browser, tapping to go fullscreen.
Recently without any major changes to my phone I tried visiting Youtube and instead of the grey box for playing the video no longer appears. I click "Watch Video" and instead it launches Media Player Mobile which doesn't work anyways with Youtube for some reason. One day flash would play in the browser, and the next day it launches Media Player instead??
Plug-ins are set to ON, I have tried reinstalling Opera Mobile, Flash Lite, installed different versions and different combinations of versions for about two months now. I finally reset my phone to factory settings and started fresh, but still problems. I have no clue what I changed but I don't know why it wont allow me to play flash videos in Opera Mobile anymore. Instead it launches a player outside of Opera Mobile.
Question: How do I make Flash Lite my default Opera Mobile player? I want the grey box with the play button to watch in the browser. Now any flash videos don't show on pages, and any links to the video just launch in Media Player. I need the flash videos to quit launching to Media Player and show up/give me the option to play right in the browser.
P.S. from my googling it seems opera mobile and flash are a tricky subject?? I just don't understand what changed as I didn't really mess with anything.
Perhaps the issue isn't at your end at all. As time goes on older devices are going to get less and less support. Perhaps it's time for an upgrade?
I know I could use a new phone and how quickly things become obsolete. I'm not sure what would have changed in support or compatibility as no upgrades or version changes have been made.
Well I was able to figure my flash is at least working correctly after downloading and trying another mobile browser. Its only the problem of Opera now using Media Player as its default software for playing. There are no settings I can find for this but if I could switch the default player to the Flash that I have installed.
I was under the impression Opera should use the flash plugin automatically when I go in and enable plugins in Opera. It did this without problem until recently I wonder if Media Player launched and set itself as default player or something. There are no settings in Opera or Media Player for file associations, etc. I have tried looking in the .ini files for Opera as someone has suggested to me but no luck. Hopefully I will be able to get a new phone soon :/
this is what i use to play hulu in full screen
Open the native hulu app
menu
preferences
orientation- set it to any
now just play any video rotate your phone and use your two favorite fingers and zoom to your liking. Enjoy
Thanks dude that works. My only problem is that hulu is laggy. Do you have the same problem? I know it's not my internet, I've tried over wi-fi and I get at 10mb down. I'm running sky ics 6.7
not lag at all on my end, but at the beginning it would start to show the video and it'd go away, so I re-installed the hulufied flash player and no more problems since then, I'd also recomend updating your rom to the newest by seanz,
