How to use Wizard as dial-up modem?

Is it possible?

I believe so, there are a few programs that will help you out. The 8125 ships with Cingular’s "wireless modem driver".

Would that be on the OEM CD? Also, how do you use it?

Maybe, but I doubt it. Your best performance senario would be to use the instructions posted above for establishing a connection to the internet then setting up AOL to use a TCP/IP (Network) connection instead of Dialup. It's been more than a coupl of versions since I've used AOL, but it should be somewhere in the connection settings.

sync up to active sync and then open programs on ur phone then modem link..pretty simple..

try to use Internet Sharing, Good Tool

ya WM5 uses DUN so you will need to activate modem link and have the drivers ready. then you have to create a proper DUN connection
WM6 is hella easy. just activate internet sharing and plug it in. It works as a PAN (like a network adapter) so all you have to do is open a browser after it's plugged in.
AOL will work for both. However it works different for each one. if you use WM5, there is an actual modem that AOL can select. It's called HTC USB modem. You can also setup AOL to use the existing TCP/IP connection. This is how you would do it if you are using WM as well.

I used the above drivers, with wm5 on my 8125 and I'm able to use my phone for Laptop internet access through a USB connection.
This works great.
Only problem is that now, after installing the drivers, when I plug in my device active sync does not communicate with the phone....

What about if I want to send a fax from either the phone or my computer? How can I dial to remote fax machine?

Anything that can be faxed, can be scanned!
Anything you can do through a web browser, theoritically can be done, I have never done a search for fax software for WM5, it seems like technologies like the Wizard are on the opposite end of the spectrum from something like the telegraph or fax machine

I have Cingular, and I was told that you have to have a data plan in order to use the phone as a FAX machine. In other words, it's cheaper to use a FAX service.

Well, I am not going to argue the evolution of technologies. In fact, fax is still a tool widely used in today's business - I am sure a fax number shows on everyone's business card.
Staying on topic, the point is whether we can utilize a wizard for a modem to modem dial.

LONG time reader, rare poster! I've been searching for my issue here, but just can't seam to find it.
I see a LOT of posts that WM6 needs no drivers to be used as a modem. Since I've flashed my 8125 to WM6 I have not been able to use it as a modem, BECAUSE it's looking for drivers. I have no internet connection at home (because of a ghetto apartment complex and REALLY old phone lines). I can active sync my phone with no problems, but when I activate Internet Sharing, my computer recognizes an 'unknown device' and doesn't find any native drivers. My goal for this evening is to uninstall the old modem setup that I had pre WM6, in case that is causing any issues. If this doesn't work, does anyone have other ideas? (FYI - running xp pro)

Internet shareing won't go to internet
I am using internet sharing but I still can't connect to internet. Any change or setup on browser? I am using firefox.

Is this also true for a DIAL-UP modem connection? I think this one only works for wifi/GPRS/UMTS etc.... connnections?

Prevent Desktop-Passthrough with 6.5.x

Hi All,
I'm running Windows Mobile 6.5.3 and am having a pain of a time locating the concept of this.
What I am trying to do is the following:
1. Plug my phone into my computer and activesync.
2. Allow for My Mobiler to access and control my phone.
3. Prevent my Phone from accessing network resources via my computer.
4. When I surf, have my phone use its data connection, not Desktop-Passthrough.
I want the benefits of charging and remote control of the phone, with the benefits of text messaging/surfing/email as on-device data.
I've tried setting the allowLSP to be 0, 01 and 10. No success.
My litmus test is tcpview to see whether or not the end-point is being shown on my computer.
I've done alot of searching, xda, ppcgeeks, google and microsoft. But, no success yet.

Doesn't Active sync ask you (during partnership set up) if you want to have data and calls enabled while connected to it?

It does, but even with the phone data on, it still pushes through to my PC unfortunately. I do appreciate that you brought that up though.

Can you just turn off the data connection of your PC? (pull the ethernet cable or disable the wifi card if you have one)

I was serching Google for the same reason as the OP, saw there was no answer and a while later figured it out by myself so I thought I would share: in AS connetion settings
check allow wireless connections and select work instead of automatic for the Computer connection. When I use Opera through MyMobiler, it launches my 3G connection instead of using the crappy Internet connection with lots of limitations that I have at the office

[Q] Anyone use Splashtop?

I need help. I was talking to a guy that claimed to be a developer of Splashtop, which allows you to run your laptop remotely from your tablet. The app was initially created for iphone/ipad, but is available in the Android market. I was so impressed with the app and how fast and seamless it runs your laptop programs that I purchased without question. Well I have a question: how do you connect to it remotely while away from home? I have turned on laptop, turned off auto shut down, and turned on splashtop on the pc. Everytime I have tried to connect away from home I get an "out of reach" message. I have been as little as 5 miles away. If anyone out there has knowledge of what I may be doing wrong please let me know. The guy told me this should work from anywhere just as long as my computer is turned on and running splashtop.

I use it on my xoom, and it works great, but I haven't tried using it away from home. Hmm, thanks for the heads up, I want to find out too.

Yes, great at home, but I can just use my laptop. If I can get it to actually work when I am away from home, then it makes my Xoom THE BEST thing to have! I get so tired of carrying my laptop around, this would help.

Yeah i got the splashtop and to make it work outside your home network, you must do port forwarding.
i uninstalled it because now, i keep getting drop connections and if i reconnect, it gives me error saying it is already being accessed by another device. this was both on my home network and accessing it from the outside. it was great but not anymore.

For the price it's probably not as good as some of it's competitors, which are closer to 5x the price of this. I would attribute it's lack of quality to the problems such as devices being already connected etc.
As for distance, it makes no difference, the most important thing to do is make sure that if you have a router, it must have the necessary ports forwarded to the computer you want to connect to.
Personally I try to avoid remote desktop and instead try make everything i might want from home accessible via web-apps or various servers.

I don't have the app so I'm just giving some general comments:
Im assuming it works over wifi?
1) Maybe you need to enter the ip address of your home and name a port? then get the router to port forward to your laptop?
2) If it works over wifi, then if your router has the option set up a VPN. then connect to it when ur away from home - then its exactly as if ur xoom is connected to the local network itself

Port forwarding is a new concept to me, so not sure how to do it, but you guys have given me a new thing to Google. Also, I did have my internet run through a router, but I disconnected it because I on have my home internet through ATT Uverse and didn't have anything that really needed to run through it. If you have some quick directions for me, then I will be grateful!

Teamviewer does it away from home. Theres no sound and fluid video tho

I assume this is similar to Wyse Pocket, and i have never had issues connecting via 3G. Is this a better app?

well your router gets its internet then shares it via with the rest of your computers.
Port forwarding takes all the data from a specific port and forwards it to a specific device.
to start you have to assign ur computer a static ip address (again through your router) then forward all data to it. sorry i cant be more precise but the procedure varies between routers. I have never used the ATT Uverse. Honestly the best thing to do is have a browse thorugh ur manual or google for a guide

These apps were made with very different goals in mind...
I use both of these apps for what I believe they were designed for and I'm happy with both. The WYSE PocketCloud app supports RDP / VNC connections but SplashTop doesn't. It's not even really designed for WAN access but rather just LAN access. Yes, unlike PocketCloud you'll need to use port forwarding to use it in the likely unsupported WAN configuration.
SplashTop runs beautifully on my LAN but I don't expect it to work outside those parameters. I think SplashTop has far superior frame rate / audio sync for watching Videos (with / without audio). Is it the optimized support for the Tegra 2? I don't know, but it works and works well. It lets me watch Hulu, NetFlix, etc with rarely a hiccup. PocketCloud can't touch that ATM.
Even though PocketCloud's framerate and audio sync are MUCH worse by comparison to SplashTop making it unusable (even when on my LAN connected by WiFi) for the purpose of watching video through it, I don't begrudge it since I don't believe that's what it's for. It has an awesome UI (I prefer it somewhat over SplashTop's) and works very well over RDP. When the Terminal Services update emerges from closed beta, it will be even more awesome.
These apps probably shouldn't even be compared as they are meant to do different things, different ways. Each works for what they were designed for. Neither is perfect. In my case, both were very easy to setup. Any difficulties I had were caused by my own firewall setup. Neither were expensive IMO.

Has anyone figured out how to connect using mycloud when you are away from home? I've tried port forwarding and the portchecker from portforward.com verifies that my ports are open and are forwarded properly but I still can't seem to connect using my modem's WAN ip.
My modem/router model is smc d3gn and I am connecting directly to it with my computer.
I've also tried using the modem's built in vpn function and I can connect to the vpn (accessing the router setup page from my tablet shows me logged in with a pptp ip so I know that I'm connected but splashtop still refuses to connect.)
Hope someone can figure this out soon... I've tried the experimental locator thing using my gmail account but I'm not sure if it does anything.

New Nexus 5 (2 weeks old) and currently running Stock / Rooted. I have successfully connected my phone to my work VPN, and other VPN networks that I use but the issue is when tethering with USB (may be the same with wifi) my IP address is still my cell providers network. Everyone else at work has an app they use to tether with their blackberry and I had to be cool and switch to Android first with the Nexus.
Is it possible to route the VPN traffic on the phone through USB tethering to mac or pc?

Yes, run VPN client on your MAC/PC, it goes through the tether to use you phone as modem, VPN layered begins in the PC through the tether.
The only thing I've ever had to worry about is Android and windows has different encryption defaults, you might have to toggle options til it works.

Thanks. Yeah, I was hoping it was possible on the phone itself. Our PC's get reimaged everyday (stupidly strict with the work computers) and have to start fresh and input the settings again.. and again.. and again. It would have just been one less thing to worry about.

- I connected to my work VPN on my phone using the built in Android VPN.
- Everything on the phone acts like it is suppose to, I can get on the INTRAnet, browse network drives, etc...
- I can tether the phone through USB with no issue however none of the traffic is routed through the VPN connection.
I don't really care about any tethering limits with networks as we have unlimited (including tethering) with Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. I tried a couple of the tricks I am finding out but noting is letting me route my phones VPN traffic over the tether.

- Tried out the tether hack by adding tether_dun_required 0 to the SQL
No luck so far I will keep hunting around this weekend. If nothing works I will just have to get the IT people to install some VPN app into the PC Image for me which will probably take a month or so.

Idea 1:
Bootable USB stick running Ubuntu 14.04, you put all your setting to your heart's content into that image, you can then use the desktop device just as a big keyboard/mouse/screen and bypass any software restrictions and leave no footprint. Ubuntu does VPN.
Then its just the F key to press, F12 say on a Lenovo and anything you save is in the USB stick so any re-imaging is irrelevant as you never use that re-imaged at all.
Idea 2:
Remote desktop capability, your remote end runs Remote Desktop servers (e.g.Citriix) then from the local PC you connect to the gateway.
Idea 3:
Try different VPN software in Android. So sounds like the VPN on the Android device is layered only ontop for the Android apps not the whole device, so you need to put the VPN layer lower down. Try instead of Android's builtin VPN capability (Settings, ....VPN) try the VPNRoot app
Idea 4:
(I got plenty more... probably you'll like Idea 3 as its easiest for you)

Thats exactly what I was thinking but I run into the issue of needing to use the proprietary work software on the PC. I might do this just for the hell of it anyway because its always fun but it will probably just add in another step not needed.

Hit refresh I was mid-edit oops send, put in more ideas..... you reminded me of a related problem with PPP Widget and USB 4G dongle which is an Android issue with VPN I got a workaround.
USB bootable sticks are cool, they cost nothing really an old 2GB stick, and lets you turn any borrowed x86 device into what YOU want. Handy for if laptops have a bad boot drive or bad OS issue. Lifesafer, part of your kit. I mentioned 14.04 as it has out-the-box MMTP and knows Nexus without tweaks and it Bluetooth tethers well to Android. I'm running it

Ugh yeah, I should have tried a different VPN app as that might fix my issue. I will give VPNRoot a shot later tonight. Not that it matters for what I need done but the "hacks" I used actually shows all data I used was coming from the phone, nice to know if I ever have to pay for my own service again.

You can use wireless ADB if you are comfortable with using command prompt.
You can also use an FTP client to connect with your phone. There are some file manager apps that allow you to set up an FTP Server on your phone. Connect to it with an FTP client and you can drag and drop files to and from your phone.
Snapdrop is a really simple file transfer tool. Install the app on your phone and you can drag files into your web browser to send to your phone. You can serve them to your computer from the phone too.

Reading thru the Snapdrop website I see several instances regarding:
"Ensure both phones are connected with the same Wi-Fi connection for the data loss transfer process."
I use 5G WiFi to connect to my phone to the router, but my desktop uses Ethernet. Both are on the same router. Do I assume correctly that I must first connect my desktop to the 5G Wi-Fi?

Yeah, both devices need to be connected to the same network, in this case the same wifi network.

@roirraW "edor" ehT was very excited when this capability became ironed out and worked well...
I wasn't aware, but apparently you have to be on the "beta" version of Nearby Share (app, even though it's a Android 13 stock app) to get this working on a Windows machine. I am excited to do all this transferring the next time I do the monthly updates manually....

Yep, the Nearby Share Beta Windows program has worked well enough for me. Requires Bluetooth (besides Wi-Fi/Ethernet), however, and my most recently built desktop is my first desktop that has Bluetooth built-in, so if your Windows computer has Bluetooth, I recommend this route.
