I just found this app to manage the email and looks better than the stock one.
My only problem is the conversation threads style of gmail, it doesn't appear on k9 so I have 20 different emails for one thread, does anyone know a way to group conversations in k9 like in gmail?
I know this app from G1. It's so old... I do not think, that k9 has anything more then stock gmail app. Also I do not think, that this app is still developed. I think, that your problem with mails thread comes from incompatibilities with 2.1 system (k9 comes from 1.1 times).

Yeah, I think k9 blows away stock app, I've been using it for over a year now. But to answer the initial question, no way to thread conversations.
Is K9 still better than stock if your using gmail?
What about search funtionality, I doubt k9 can beat the stock mail clients ability to server side searches back as far as you have mail, I didnt think pop or imap support this? or am I wrong?
i use stock for gmail, and k9 for all other imap accounts.

If you are using Gmail, no... K9 is probably not better than stock.
In fact, I used to (on my G1) use K9 for several of my alternate accounts, one is a straight up @gmail.com account - another is a Google Apps for Domains account. But, now that I can sync multiple Google Accounts on my Nexus, I am only using K9 for my ISP's account. The functionality that the built in Gmail app provides is superb (in my opinion), as mentioned by the OP the threading of conversations makes it very easy to navigate a larger inbox.
Does K9 have "real" push, I want to use it but I don't want it to kill battery faster than stock GMail apps and it REALLY need to start threading!

k9 is slow.. profimail on symbian is way faster.. unfort.
i tried to email them suggestions but they ignored me..
one reason it is so slow is it is not keeping track of highest message id per mailbox.. so everytime you connect it is redownloading the last 25 messages or whatever amount you have it set to.
the second reason is that it is downloading entire messages.. it really only needs to download headers, and keep a connection to server open while you are in the app and then download the body when you goto a message.
if they would implement these 2 changes it would be light years faster.

k9 has setting to download headers only.
not in the latest release version 25.15 i went through all settings again

Yes, it supports the IMAP "IDLE" command, which gives you what you're calling "push" (rather than polling for email). The latest K9 also supports the "COMPRESS" extension, which transfers compressed versions of the content, which means less data usage, and less transmit/receive time.

Nice, a great app just got better.
Just checked the market and the latest version is 3.207. Where are you seeing 3.312?

yeah, I always stick to their code.google.com...releases, almost every couple of days a new one, quite impressive workers!! I havent used android default email app since,.... I dont know
Should sticky this, this app is awesome and with push and SDCARD saving all the email, even better.

I personally like the pure series thats available in the market it allows you to combine your sms,email and gmail all on one widget with options for skins and such. Also allows for manual and automatic refresh I like it alot been using it for several months. good dev support etc.

Gmail is the best by far
What I was looking for was an email program that had better nested folder access more like you have on the iPhone. I gave up my iPhone for the Hero but their email program had much better folder control.
I use Gmail. Once you understand how to use labels to mark your mail folders are no longer relevant.

Gmail won't do exchange though, will it? I have the stock mail app set to 'as items arrive', and I seem to remember the gmail app won't do that (admittedly I haven't played with that app in awhile).
Googles Labels are very similar to Folders, once you understand them. Take a look at this:

Also, with Gmail on my Hero, if I have Gmail open on the browser on my laptop, I can actually see the emails come in faster on the phone, and then within 30 seconds on the laptop.
I would say, give it a try, set up an account and see what happens.

I have used Touchdown for Exchange and it does support Push email if your exchange server does. It isn't too bad, and there is a trial in the market.

Well my goal would be to be able to use one app for gmail and exchange. Right now I'm using k9 for gmail (I hate the gmail app and don't really like the stock mail app either) and stock for exchange.
I'm looking for a good email widget for CM7 RC2. I just synced my work exchange account with my phone and tried K9 but it was giving me an IO Error (no idea what that mean). I've tried looking for any type of widget, but not really finding anything good. You guys have any suggestions?

I have, but it gives me an IO Error on my work exchange account.
While I think the Google Mail app is ALRIGHT I think it needs quite some improvement so I am wondering if there is either a good alternative to it or if someone added features to it / modded it.
1) problem:
i can't select any text from any emails (written by others or myself) which isn't too great when writing emails.
is there any app for selecting text maybe? it's something i miss a lot on android. if i want to select text on a website I need to switch to Skyfire.
I just can't believe coding a text selection is really hard so I don't understand why google didn't add it themselves yet.
2) problem:
when I'm on the go and sending an email and the CONNECTION dies for a moment the Google Mail app will be stuck at "Sending..."
I guess it is stuck in a loop then and it won't send out my email but I also can't go back so I can only close Google Mail with a taskmanager.
Can't this be fixed, too?
I just want a GO BACK feature so that it won't get stuck in a loop. Maybe just an automatic Save Draft just when someone clicks Send and then goes to the Send process and then you get the option to force close that and just go back- I dont know.

i dont use the gmail app period. turned off notifications and disabled gmail sync in the sync menu. I use the regular Mail app that came standard (HTC Hero) for all 3 of my email accounts, yahoo, gmail, and hotmail. never have any problems out of it.
EDIT: Mail app will select text and if connection dies when sending mail, it will pick up where it left off when the next scheduled sync takes place.

I too use the default mail app (this time CM6 on a nexus1), but if you don't like that one you might want to check out K9 Mail. I think its free from the market (or various places online if you don't have access/market enabler).

oh nice. k9 lets me select and copy text. im convinced. installed it and got rid of gmail.
Does anyone use the social hub on their note? I've been persevering as I like the concept, but I'm finding it a bit limited in functionality. e.g. no option to select multiple items.
Also it always opens on the feeds page, which I hardly ever use.
Is anyone else using it?
Yep I use it and love it. Have 5 email accounts, facebook, twitter and linkedin all in one place. Superb app

I'd like to give this a test drive, anyone able to post up the latest social hub apk?
Seems it's not in the market now, and I'd frozen it when it first launched as I don't use facebook and other (anti)social stuff, but it might be worthwhile now I'm sync'ing work email so that I can use one app to handle work and personal email. I like how the default mail app does pinch-zoom which gmail lacks, so if social hub will do that and handle gmail the same way I'd be happy. After freezing it and then updating firmware the apk's seem to have gone so cannot re-install

Social Hub will use the stock email app for emails, so you can pretty set up your account there.
I'm not using it anymore since it consumes a lot of memory. Also, occasionally the account for Windows Live would suddenly stop working with no way to retrieve mails. Furthermore the extra things that it can do for emails can be configured in the stock email without it. Example, to use Hotmail, configure the server to m.hotmail.com as Exchange account. For Yahoo, configure it as imap. You get push service for both.
For social apps, since I'm using Facebook official app, I don't see why I need to set it up using Social Hub. Well the thing I hate the most is that I can't choose the default tab when I start it up.

thanks for the info, I was hoping to just have one app in the quick launch area for exchange/gmail/IM but maybe sticking with stock apps is a better bet then. Might look at moving the gmail accounts into this and dropping the gmail app instead.

I've been using social hub anytime now, it works fine. putting all accounts in one, easy to access emails and messaging the only thing is that, it eats more memory (allocating more memory to social hub0 with out actively using it.

I've noticed that the Gmail app on the SW2 doesn't seem to update all the time. I've currently only got 5 messages in there, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it - previously it was only showing 1 email.
Similar story with Messaging.
So my questions are - is there a way to force an update/push to the watch?
At this time, Gmail Smart Extra won't handle multi mail accounts even it appears to.
If it's your case, just select a single account, you'll see it syncs just fine
Then, you'll have to do a "trick" (forwarding or fetch other accounts won't work properly) to get all your other account's mails into this selected account (lemme know if you'd like me to walk you through this).
Also, if you have some sort of energy saving feature enabled on your phone, Gmail might not sync/push notifications to your SW2 as often as you wish/think...
