Ok, so I bought this phone as a project, it will boot fine to the lock screen, but I think the digitizer is jacked, but I want to test other things just to make sure. For instance I try to go into recovery mode by holding vol down and power and get nothing. So i dont know if the button is bad or I am not doing something right. Or if fast boot could be the cause, I cant get to menu to see if it is on. Also is there a way to get debugging on without using the phone? I'm guessing no, but I could do alot more to the phone if it was on.
Anyways. Any advice, or suggestions?
pull the battery, put it back, then try to get into recovery, and w/o usb debug or root, its very difficult to do anything with it in its current state
EDIT* also, its the button is having problems, the nice thing is that you can actually access the button itself under the volume rocker, to see if its an actual button hardware issue
Nope, battery pull didn't work, still booted normally. blah.
check my last post edited with something that might help

I was trying to get 2.2 on my captivate. It got hung and after about an hour, I powered down phone (battery out).
I'm now getting [phone... (!).. COMPUTER] picture
Trying to get back to stock ROM 2.1, but I cannot get device in download mode
I had to use adb to get in download mode originally.
Is it possible I got a phone that doesn't go into download mode based on button combinations? If so, what do I do?
Unplug your phone from USB
Pull battery
Close Odin
Open Odin
Put in battery
Hold both volume buttons (NO POWER) and plug in USB
Hopefully this gets you into download mode
Still Fail
I've been trying that, but without open/close of Odin.
Still failed when I added that step.
get to that screen again: hold volume up/down and power at the same time.
When the screen goes black, then release power button but keep holding down volume up/down

Yes, and remember to keep the volume buttons pressed in while plugging in the USB... I always hold them in until the droid/caution sign comes up.

Try the methods prescribed. There are several minor variations but you may have a phone that doesn't do three button recovery. In order to tell, we need some history on your phone. What is the RF Cal date? Were you able to three button into download before? Do you know if it was one of the ones that had the three button problem?
autocorrelation,
I tried that with the usb cable plugged in and without it plugged in.
Still no good.
joeybear23,
I've been trying that all afternoon. Probably about 50 times.
ianwood,
How do I get the RF Cal date? I don't see it under the battery where the S/N is located. I tried to do 3 button recovery to put phone into download mode when trying to install 2.2, but it wouldn't work. I had to use "adb reboot download".
I've never tried it before today. The only issue I've had was that it could NEVER connect to AT&T server to check for an update.
can you get it into recovery mode?
no recovery
No. It won't go into recovery mode either.
The only thing it WILL do is respond to all 3 buttons being pressed by the black screen flash after about 8 seconds.
If you keep holding all 3 buttons will it flash again after the initial black screen? Try releasing the power button and keeping holding vol up/down after the second black screen.
If I keep holding all 3 buttons, it just keeps flashing.
Also tried to let it flash twice (and even more) and releasing power right when it goes to black 2nd (or 3rd) time. Also tried releasing power half way through black screen, and right before black screen re-appears and also just as the screen powers back up. None of them work.
I ran into this yesterday and about freaked out. Don't panic - apparently one of the guys had this happen to them a lot. Take a deep breath, have ODIN open, plug your USB cable in, hold the volume buttons down at the same time, press and hold the power button till you see the phone to computer, and let go. You should get to the download screen again. Good luck; sucks when something like that happens and you don't know what's going on.
I know this wont help much, but I have one of the no 3 button phones, and after 20 minutes of trying all these methods, it did go into d-load mode. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly which combo I used since my brain went into overload when I finally saw the triangle appear. There is hope though, and please PLEASE post which one works for you(I'm afraid to mess with mine until I find a foolproof method)
I had a phone that wouldnt respond to ANY 3 button combo I tried. I bricked it (sorta on purpose) to the phone-!-computer screen and went and replaced the phone at AT&T (under the 30 day deal).
It didnt initially work with the 3-button but after the JH7 OTA DL mode and recovery mode work perfectly now. Also, GPS has been completely spot on when testing on my motorcycle with the phone in my backpack running my tracks.
If you are under the 30-day return policy, bring it in and come up with a good reason as to why they should give you a new phone. If not, then you're sorta SOL....

This method just saved my butt!!!
I have never had trouble getting into recovery or download mode until today when I did a dumb thing. The phone would lock at the ATT screen when trying to power on and if the phone was off and I plugged it in to charge it would freeze and the circle logo that comes up before the green charging battery does.
Every method of getting into download or recovery failed up till now.
Thanks Zilch!!!
Hey guys gonna move this to Q&A.
I had this problem a few days ago after updating to 2.2. I tried every single button/usb/battery combo and nothing worked. FORTUNATELY I was within 30 days of purchasing it (I guess there's a silver lining when diving right into "hacking"), and I brought it to the store with the box and receipt and just told them it gave me an error when turning it on (played dumb) and they swapped it out without even testing. If you're over the 30 days then I think you're pretty much SOL... gotta pay for a replacement.
bricked
I declared it to be bricked and took it back to the store. I have only had it 2 weeks, so I basically pulled the same move of playing dumb and they gave me another one without any problem.
I'm wanting to try to see if I can put it in recovery mode and/or download mode with the buttons without even attaching it to anything, but now I'm paranoid about bricking it.

Buddy, we need you to remember I'm in the exact position, no combo works and I bricked it after trying to load 2.2
Going into recovery or download will not brick it, its only everything after that point that might get you bricked.
So, I was trying to flash my NS back to stock from TWRP becuase my power button's broke and I'm sending it in.
Anyways, TWRP crashed during flashing (wow....recovery crashing NOT good), and I cant boot the phone except by plugging it in from being off. However, when I hold vol up and get to bootloader by doing that, the bootloader is completely unresponsive to vol presses, and my comp doesnt see the device.
This is NOT good. But I'm clueless as to how to fix something like a bootloader issue. Anyone?
I would try odin. Search around the Samsung webiste they should have an exe which flashes the phone back to factory default. I've seen one posted around here but it depends which version of the phone you have.
Odin requires very careful use. DO NOT CLEAR YOUR EFS!
It may be your only option though.
If you can jimmy your power button and get into the normal bootloader then follow these steps:
1) install Ubuntu
2) install Android sdk for gb or ics whichever you are using
3) install fastboot (download it from cyanogenmod wiki and copy it to Ubuntu's sbin folder)
4) in bootloader menu, connect USB, then in Ubuntu terminal type fastboot reboot recovery (may be reboot-recovery, can't remember)
You should be able to use your phones capacitive buttons to navigate the menu and install a stock ROM
Sent from above
Yeah. Totally forgot you can do that. Try what he said.
Problem is, fastboot doesn't work. The bootloader is completely unresponsive.
It's like it launches into a crash. I can see the options, but the vol buttons dont do anything. However, those buttons work, otherwise I wouldnt be able to even get THAT far.
I'm trying to get the power button to register a press (it randomly does, but Ive had hours of no luck).
Any other ideas? Why would the bootloader launch into a crash. I wonder if it's because the phone is being turned on via power cable instead of the pwr button, but that seems unlikely.
On a side note, I have my efs backup from when I was using 2.3.7, so I've got it handy if I can ODIN the thing, but I dont know crap about odin.
Read his response again. I don't think you understood what he said. You can initiate those commands through your PC instead of pushing the buttons.

Sorry, I should have elaborated more.
I have tried on both my PC and Mac (via terminal app) to see the device under 'fastboot devices' command. No devices show up, so it's not even seeing the thing. Neither computer sees the device as being hooked up, as far as I can tell.
It'll boot into the unresponsive bootloader when I plug the cable in and hold vol up. At that point, nothing else happens. Doesnt show up on fastboot, etc.
sounds like your power button went. thats the #1 complaint i read about the power button going, the unresponsive volume buttons. my power button is gone to(will register a response every once in a while, on its own. my volume buttons dont register either when in the bootloader. but, i can get them to register. what i do is take the battery cover of, and gently flick the phone with my fingers right near the power button, but on the back of the phone. most the time, the power button will register that i pressed reboot bootloader, but, sometimes it allows me to select up or down with the volume keys. if it reboots bootloader, i just try again. ive got it down to an art since im in the bootloader often, it takes me about 20 seconds to get the volume keys going up or down. at first it would take me 3-5 minutes. i hope that helps.

LOL simms thanks. I had a feeling you might chime in here since I had msg'd you earlier about my pwr button going out.
The thing that sucks is that I was just restoring it to stock in TWRP and it just locked up for some reason. I knew as soon as it happened that I was in trouble. I'll keep messing with it and see if I can get it to register 'Reboot Bootloader'.
I was actually wondering about that earlier. I figured that if the vol keys didnt work, then the pwr button wouldnt either in this situation. I know mine randomly registers presses, but now it's being a *****.
We'll see......
try going into the bootloader and give it a few smack on the back, see if thatll register and "press" reboot bootloader(since its the first option). the first time i went into the boatloader after my power button went, i thought that i was **** out of luck too. but, it turned out fairly very manageable with some practice. i usually flick it very lightly to get the volume buttons to move up and down, to hard and reboot boorloader registers.
The power button on my phone recently has stopped working. I need to get it warrantied, but I am running CM 10.2. I need to Odin back to stock, but I can not get into Download Mode or the recovery. When I go into Download mode, the initial screen pops up, the one where you choose to hit up to continue, or down to reboot normally. After I hit up, the screen goes black and nothing happens.
I really need to get back to stock, as Bestbuy are being dicks, and demanding I do a factory reset before they send my phone in.
Anything? I still need help on this.

This has been covered at least 10 times in the past few months we need a sticky. Take your battery out hold your phone so the power button is facing a table or floor and slam that side a few times it should work again (Temporary). You might need to hit it on the surface really hard 10-20 times before it works. Just not to hard or else you might crack the screen. I used a mouse pad to soften the impact. This trick no longer works for me so I ripped the button off. After about a month of doing this I needed to use things that would only hit the button to make it work. About a month after that nothing worked so I just took it off the motherboard and now boot from a off state by plugging into the wall and enter odin mode deny the prompt and it kicks me into a workable state.

I can get into the system just fine. When I go into the recovery or download mode, it doesn't stay in that mode. I tried the banging thing, and it made my power button go from intermittently working, to not working at all.
keep doing it until it works. The button is sticking that is why it reboots/stopped working.

It sounds like your power button is physically broken, and it is activating intermittently, which is stopping the phone from entering download mode. My only experience with this problem is my own phone but ultimately mine got so bad that I had to rip the button off the motherboard, as ThePagel did. Your symptoms sound the same as mine.
You can try this procedure to get into recovery, which works for me without a power button. You will probably have the same problem you are having now with the phone rebooting on its own before you actually get into recovery, because the power button is activating.
1. Take the battery out of the phone and unplug it from USB power.
2. Plug in USB power.
3. While holding down the volume-down button and the Home button, insert the battery (this is a little tricky).
4. The phone should start and warn you that you are entering Download mode. If you want to use Odin to return to stock, do that now.
5. If you want to get into Recovery instead, press Volume Down to reboot and then *immediately* push and hold Volume Up and Home simultaneously. The phone should reboot into recovery. Mine does.
If that doesn't work, and you can't get a new phone without returning it to stock, then prying the power button off the phone's motherboard may be your only solution.
Ok. I am writing here since it was suggested. I am having a major issue and unsure how to fix it. The following is the issue and steps taken thus far with no resolve. Hopefully someone else has an answer to assist me. I really need this phone to work as it is my lifeline.
Star is I have all updated firmware, rom, and even updated xtended settings. I have today also installed the viper sound for the first time. I will say I have settings changed throughout with all the variations. Xtended settings, nusense toolbox, vipersound, normal settings, and Xposed framework.
What is happening is the phone needed a reboot. It shows the splashscreen and then shuts off. It will not fully boot. I have tried to hold the power vol/up buttons together and quickly vol/down. But that does not work. Now I have also tried adb and attempted to find the device but with no power seemingly it is not able to work.
Anyone have suggestions I might try? Please advise.I have even attempted adb but the pc does not see the device since it never gets fully turned on. It is a splashscreen and then dead. Really wish there was a way to get it to just turn on for access somehow. Anyone have a suggestion?
Have you tried holding the power button and up button till you get into fastboot?

I have actually held the button where it will only show the splashscreen and then show a bit of the TWRP recovery screen. However I cannot pick anything from the menu before it goes to the battery icon showing it is simply charging. I really have no clue what is needed to be done now. I am surprised it has let me get that far without just turning off again. But this was done by holding the volume button up and down and power button all at the same time.
Do you have any other suggestions since it is not being seen by adb on the pc?

Unplug your phone. Then hold power and volume up for 30 seconds. Plugged in you are hitting the twrp bug.
Edit... After unplugging wait 20 seconds before attempting to boot it.

Thanks dottat i didnt even think of telling him unplug it
So heres the situation. I woke up, and tried to press the power button once, which i do to get it to show the lock screen, that didnt work so I hit the home button and didnt think anything of it. Eventually it occured to me thats not normal, so I tried holding the power button to see if the reboot options would pop up, and again nothing. So without thinking I took the battery out, put it back in, and as Im sure you can guess, nothing. The phone is rooted and has TeamWin recovery, but I did that the same day the Marshmallow update was available, so its been working fine for weeks, then all of the sudden this happens. Im 100% positive its nothing I did rooting the phone weeks ago, I just wanted to eliminate that as a possibility.
So as it stands, my phone is off, adb wont recognize it while its off, so rebooting into recovery that way isnt a option, getting into recovery pressing the hard keys isnt a option. Anyone else had this issue, or know of a quick fix solution? Im open to anything, that doesnt require taking the phone apart. Because I dont want to, because I hate going there, but Ill take the phone to sprint if I have to.
Also, when its plugged in it shows the charging screen.
In short, its not bricked, its not stuck in a bootloop, basically, is there a way to turn it on, aside from the power button?
Any and all help is appreciated, and thanks in advance.
I actually just got it to turn back on, then I was hit with a constant "Unfortunately NetworkSystemProvider has stopped" and its 4am, I dont feel like messing with this, so I did a factory reset, and if this doesnt work Im either going to throw it off a overpass, or just turn it back off and wait to take it to sprint, because if I had a hard time getting it to turn on Im sure they will to.
